Who’s Who in Production
Ken Lechter (Co-Producer) It is difficult to believe that we have been
doing this for eight years. It is truly a delight to be working all these
years with Stew and the entire production team. I am never ceased to be
amazed by the level of talent, dedication, and hard work that is involved
in these productions. Again, my sincerest thanks and appreciation to
the clergy, synagogue staff, and custodial staff. They consistently go
out of their way to accommodate us and provide invaluable assistance
without missing a beat continuing the myriad of programs that make
Har Shalom such an outstanding religious and community organization.
This year, as I don’t have to sing or dance (which I can’t), Shelly was kind
enough to give me a couple of lines as the police officer—At my age, I
hope I can remember them.
Stew Remer (Co-Producer) Eight years and counting……supporting
the Har Shalom Players has truly become a labor of love. Working each
year with the amazing production team of Ken, Shelly, Marci, and Lee,
along with our super choreographers, Karen, Hayley, and Stephanie,
our talented orchestra, our skilled set design team, and Deb Schapiro
as our Assistant to the Artistic Director makes my experience an annual
highlight. As incredible as the “backstage” team is, the cast of “Hello
Dolly” really rose to the heights of their abilities rehearsing long hours
and very hard to put together one hell of a show. Thanks to one and all.
Rachelle A. (Shelly) Horn (Artistic Director) Shelly is pleased to
return, along with a great production team, to HS Players for their eighth
show. This is also the 20th anniversary of directing Hello Dolly for DTC
with the same special Dolly! Special thanks to the cast and crew for their
hard work and dedication to the show, and for the fun and challenging
creative process. Between rehearsals Shelly is the Director of Alumni
Relations for American University Washington College of Law.
Marci Shegogue (Musical Director) Marci has worked on hundreds
of musical productions in the D.C. area over the past 30 years. This is
her 8th show with Har Shalom. Favorite shows include “Forever Plaid”
and “All Shook Up” with RMT, “Footloose” with Northwest High School,
“Little Shop of Horrors” with Damascus Theater Company, “Seussical”
with Har Shalom, and “Hair” with Kensington Arts Theater. By day she

teaches music at The McLean School of MD. Kudos to the rest of the
HS team for putting together a great show, and of course hugs to Rich,
Camryn, and Jamie who fill my life with song!
Lee Rosenthal (Vocal Director)—See “Who’s Who in the Cast.”
Karen Kushner Creel (Choreographer) is happy to dance and play
with the Har Shalom Players once again. What a wonderful blessing to
be included year after year. Keep dancing; it will keep you young!
Hayley North (Choreographer) Hayley is extremely excited to be
working on her first Har Shalom production!! Some of her favorite
projects have included Anybodys in West Side Story (RMT), Poopsie in
The Pajama Game (RMT) and Assistant Choreographer, to Ivan Davila,
for Hairspray (LTA, WATCH Award for Best Choreography). Other shows
have included Guys and Dolls, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Best Little
Wh*house in Texas (DS), Spelling Bee (LTA), Kiss Me, Kate (RMT) and All
Shook Up (RMT). She has also directed Othello and The Complete Works
of William Shakespeare Abridged at the University of Maryland. Hayley
also is a member of Kinor Dance Company.
Stephanie Miller (Choreographer) is thrilled to once again be working
with Har Shalom Players! The last time she was here was two seasons
ago choreographing Once Upon a Mattress. She has choreographed
for colleges, high schools, dance studios, and community theaters
in Maryland, North Carolina and Ohio. When she isn’t teaching cast
members to dance, she’s teaching elementary music students at Clopper
Mill Elementary in Germantown. Thanks to the cast and production
team for all of their hard work and support!
Deb Schapiro (Assistant to the Artistic Director) has now been
involved with the Har Shalom Players for three years, debuting as the
Assistant to the Director with Once Upon a Mattress, and then last year
with Bye Bye Birdie. Under the excellent direction of Shelly Horn, Debbie
enjoys seeing the play come together with careful blocking, thoughtful
attention to detail, and most of all, the camaraderie of the cast as they
work to create a play that they are proud to present to the community.

Who’s Who in the Cast
Matt Balfour (Ambrose) is so happy to be back with the Har Shalom
Players for his senior year! He is currently auditioning for the Musical
Theater programs at many colleges, and rehearsing for the opening
of Miss Saigon/Madama Butterfly, which opens in just one month.
He is also preparing for Show Choir competitions in Nashville, West
Virginia, and Cincinnati, which begin next week! He would like to
thank Shelly, Lee and Marci for their help and love throughout his
participation in Fiddler on the Roof, Seussical, Oliver, and Hello Dolly!
Thanks for seeing the show!
Shelly Basen (Ensemble, Cook) is delighted to return to the Har
Shalom Stage. She loves music and musical theatre, sings in the
Rockville Chorus, and, when not at work as a Public Health Analyst,
dances whenever she can. She’d like to thank the hardworking and
talented cat, and the gifted production team. She is also grateful
for her loving sister, Meryl, with whom she shares much, including
many appearances on stage, and her always supportive, cheerleader
husband, Barry. She hopes the fun she is having translates to a
bountiful contribution to Har Shalom.
Paul Blank (Barnaby) is pleased to participate in his second show
at Har Shalom. Two years ago he acted as Sir Harry (the bravest of
all the knights, of course!) in Once Upon a Mattress. When he is not
entertaining audiences at Har Shalom, he is entertaining his students
at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School as a teacher of Judaic
Studies. Paul would like to thank the entire Har Shalom community,
and particularly the awesome Hazzan Henrique and Rabbi Janet Ozur
Bass for their many years of friendship.
Mickey Burstein (Ensemble, Court Reporter) Mickey is back (“…
where he belongs….”) with the Har Shalom Players for the 7th time in
8 productions. He is the court reporter in Hello Dolly, and he is part of
the ensemble for the rest of the production. Anyone can sing, dance,
and act. Mickey returns to the Har Shalom Players just to have fun!
He loves the camaraderie of the cast and production team in these
marvelous musicals. As always, special thanks go to his beautiful wife,
Robin, for her love and encouragement, and to his daughter Laura for
letting Dad just be Dad.

Meryl Cohen (Ensemble, Cook) is thrilled to be involved in her 8th
Har Shalom production. It’s always fun to work with Shelly, Marci, Lee,
and this year, working on everyone’s costumes. The cast members
are a great group – especially her sister Shelly Basen. She is enjoying
retirement and happily having time for her grandkids and friends,
travel, volunteering, and classes. Thanks again to her husband, Jeff,
who continues to be supportive of her and is again handling ticket
sales. It’s a family affair!
Jacob Cooper (Ensemble, Waiter) Jacob is a freshman at Churchill
H.S. where he plays tuba in the concert band. In his free time he
enjoys hanging out with his family and his buddies. He also enjoys
parkour, skiing, building antennas and other structures, and exploring
the latest and greatest in electronics. Hello Dolly! is Jacob’s sixth Har
Shalom show, and he is enjoying every minute of it!
Julie Cooper (Ensemble, Waiter) Julie is in the 7th grade at Hoover
M.S. where she keeps very busy with her studies and extracurricular
activities. Julie enjoys skiing, playing clarinet in the band, and playing
point guard on her basketball team. She also loves to hang out with
her family and play with her friends. Hello Dolly! is Julie’s sixth Har
Shalom show and she is having loads of fun!
Julia Donato (Minnie Fay) is thrilled to be in her third production of
Hello Dolly! She was only able to do this show because of her wonderful
husband and family’s continuous support. By day, Julia teaches music
at Lakewood Elementary School. She is also a cantor at St. Paul
Catholic Church in Damascus, MD. Recent credits: All Shook Up (RMT,
Dance Ensemble), and Joseph…..Dreamcoat (DTC, Wife/Ishmaelite).

Joni Donlan (Ensemble) Hello Dolly! is Joni’s first production with
Har Shalom. She recently came back to the theater after a 25 year
break as a member of the Upcounty Theater where she was in The
Dining Room and Vanities. Joni thanks her friends and family for their
support. Hope you all enjoy the show!
Olga Fenning (Ensemble) Hello Dolly! is Olga’s first on stage theatrical
performance. She has worked behind the scenes at the McLean

School’s Winter and Spring productions for the past seven years. She
would like to thank her family and friends for their support and hope
they all enjoy the show.
Maya Goldberg (Ensemble, Waiter) This is Maya’s fifth appearance
with the Har Shalom Players. She is a 6th grader at Melvin J. Berman
Hebrew Academy. She loves theater, arts & crafts, playing with her
friends, sports, shopping, and is very excited to be in this show.
Simon Goldberg (Ensemble) This is Simon’s second appearance with
the Har Shalom Players. He is in the 3nd grade at Melvin J. Berman
Hebrew and he enjoys playing football, basketball, baseball, and floor
hockey too!
Sharona Guggenheim (Ensemble, Waiter) is a seventh grader,
and delighted to be in her second Har Shalom play, having been in
Once Upon A Mattress two years ago. Sharona also has performed in
Once on this Island, Bye-Bye Birdie, Aladdin, and Fiddler on the Roof,
at Imagination Stage summer theater campus. She loves to sing and
has also performed many places with the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew
Academy girls’ choir.
Michelle Hessel (Mrs. Molloy) is so happy to be back on the HS
stage (bimah?) for the sixth time! Most recently, Michelle made
her directing debut with The Princess and the Sprout for The British
Players. Michelle would like to thank the HS Players for being such a
happy group to play with and especially Shelly, Lee, and Marci for all
their support and dedication.
Donald Hurwitz (Ensemble) This is Donald’s fourth show with the
HS Players. Thanks go to his supportive family and friends, (next time
buy your own tickets!). Everyone should be so lucky to be among
so many wonderful and caring people determined to sing, dance,
entertain, and stay young. Thanks to “Il professore” also.
Ed Hutman (Ensemble) is happy to once again participate as one of
the Har Shalom Players. Ed has appeared as a Knight (in tights) in
Once Upon a Mattress, and as the Mayor in Bye-Bye Birdie. The show

two years ago was his first appearance on the stage since his days at
Camp Airy. Looking forward to next year’s show.
Kandy Hutman (Mrs. Rose, Ensemble) This is Kandy’s seventh play
with the Har Shalom Players. “It’s always so enjoyable and challenging.
From Golda in Fiddler…, to Doris in Damn Yankees, to Old Sally in Oliver,
to Edna Peabody, the mayor’s wife in Bye-Bye Birdie, and now, Mrs.
Rose in Hello Dolly!, each play creates a community and performance
that is memorable. Thanks for including me in the process. I learn so
much with each experience. You are all amazing to work with, and now
this has become a high light of the year for me. As Mrs. Rose would say,
I hope this continues ‘for a long, long time.”
Barbara Kaplowitz (Ensemble) is glad to not be taking “break a leg”
literally, and happy to rejoin the HS Players. Her credits include: A
Christmas Carol; Fiddler on the Roof; Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner;
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Once Upon a Mattress”;
Oliver!; Seussical; The Shadow Box, and The Wager. Hugs to Brett,
MoSco, friends, the cast, orchestra, production team, and crew.
Brett Kaplowitz (Ensemble) is delighted to take part in another
Har Shalom Players’ production. Previous credits include Fiddler on
the Roof; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Once Upon
a Mattress; Oliver!, and Seussical. Shout outs to Barb, Molly and Scott
and to all the Har Shalom Players in the parade and behind the scenes.
Lauren Katz (Ensemble) Lauren Katz is almost12 years old and
attends Charles E Smith Jewish Day School. This is her first musical at
Har Shalom, and it has been really fun for her. She was in Oliver! at Act
Two, which got her interested in musicals.
Ken Lechter (Ensemble) See “Who’s Who in Production.”
Leah Malech (Ensemble) is thrilled to be a part of the Hello Dolly
cast. Leah has performed as Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory” and the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz at Holton
Arms Creative Summer Camp, as well as in the kids chorus in Bye-Bye-
Birdie at Har Shalom. Leah has really enjoyed rehearsing with the cast
and wishes that everyone “breaks a leg!”

Yvonne Paretzky (Ernestina) is delighted to add Hello Dolly! to her
Har Shalom musicals and growing list of area stage appearances. As
always, it’s great to be able to sing so badly and still have so much fun
with old and new friends.
Rabbi Adam Raskin (Judge) is very excited about another very short,
but hopefully memorable appearance, in this, his second Har Shalom
production. He’s a little unhappy about not being able to dance and
collapse on the floor as he did in his stretch performance as the Rabbi
in last year’s production of Bye-Bye Birdie, but realizes that would be
somewhat inappropriate for a judge - although obviously not for a
Rabbi.
Stew Remer (Ensemble, Stanley) Many thanks to a great, hard
working and committed cast and production team and much love to
Shelley for never complaining about my many nights out for the last
three months. A special shout out to Marci, Blake, Jodi, Ariana, Noah,
Brady, and Jackson, my incredible kids and grandkids.
Gene Ridberg (Horace) For Gene, this role is a culmination of
the many joyful years of performing with the Har Shalom Players.
“Gathering for rehearsals in the Fall and Winter months has become a
ritual which grows stronger and more meaningful each year. Thanks
to all in the cast for being part of my community ‘performance family,’
and thanks to all family and friends who have come to support me
in this effort. Finally, a special recognition and hug to Barbara, my
partner and ‘wonderful woman’ for close to 50 years.”
Lee Rosenthal (Dolly) - Lee has been involved with the Har Shalom
players with Shelly, Marci, Stew and Ken since the very beginning.
Along with vocal directing, she was last seen as Mrs. MacAfee in Bye-
Bye Birdie. In local theaters, Lee has portrayed Miss Sandra in All Shook
Up (RMT), Rose in Gypsy (DTC), and Sister Mary Leo in Nunsense (PTC).
Lee will be directing Nunsense-Amen at the Arts Barn in the Kentlands
for RMT this April. As always, she thanks her amazing son Matthew
for joining her on stage and putting up with the crazy schedule. Lee
dedicates this show in loving memory of Ian Adams.

Matthew Rosenthal (Ensemble, Waiter, Paper Hanger) - Matthew
is happy to be back with the Har Shalom players. He was last seen as
Judah in DTC’s production of Joseph…Dreamcoat. Matthew is an 8th
grader at Frost Middle School. He also enjoys playing soccer and doing
art, especially fused glass. Enjoy the show !
Marsha Schwartz (Ensemble, Cook) is happy, once again, to appear
with The Har Shalom Players. “I thank my agent and biggest fan
(Sorell) for his continued encouragement. I know where I belong….”
Hannah Spector (Ermengarde) Hannah is so excited to be in her 7th
HS Players show. She had such a great time doing it! Hannah is in 9th
grade at Quince Orchard High School and plays lacrosse. She thanks
everyone who helped make the production happen!
Joelle Spector (Ensemble) is a 6th grader at Lakelands Park Middle
School. This is her 5th play with HS players. In her free time she likes
dancing, acting, reading and hanging out with her family and friends.
She is excited to be in this play with her sister, Hannah (Ermangarde).
In the past, she has enjoyed every single play she has done with the
Har Shalom Players! She is very excited to do this play!
Amanda Spott (Ensemble) is thrilled to be back with the Har Shalom
Players. Amanda’s previous shows include Fiddler on the Roof, Damn
Yankees, and Dig It (a show created for the Fifth Grade at Wayside
Elementary). Amanda is a junior at Winston Churchill High School.
She is excited to be sharing the stage with her Mom, Dad, Brother and
Sister! If only there was a role for her dog Zoey…
Hailey Spott (Ensemble) is in the first grade at Wayside Elementary
School. Hello Dolly is Hailey’s first theatrical performance. She is so
excited to be sharing the stage with her Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother.
Hailey sends a big thank you to Mommy and Daddy for letting her stay
up past her bedtime to attend rehearsals!
Larry Spott (Cornelius) is thrilled to be part of his fourth production
with the Har Shalom Players, previously performing in Fiddler on the
Roof (Motel), Damn Yankees (Henry), and Seussical. It is such a treat to

such an amazing cast and his entire family.
Michelle Spott (Ensemble) is excited to part of the Har Shalom cast
once again! Michelle previously performed in Damn Yankees, and
Seussical. As with the rest of the Spott family, Michelle is thrilled to be
sharing the stage with her husband, two daughters and son!
Joshua Spott (Ensemble) is in the third grade at the McLean School of
Maryland. He’s been an active member of Har Shalom since he began
preschool at the age of two! He is thrilled to be in Hello Dolly! – and
especially excited to be sharing the stage with his Mommy, Daddy, and
two sisters! He is so appreciative to have been given this opportunity!
Lisa Straus (Ensemble) is excited to be involved in musical theater
again after many, many years. “Theater has always been a passion of
mine and this production of Hello Dolly has been a great reintroduction.
I want to thank Adina Goldberg for giving me that little extra push
I needed to audition, and my family for putting up with an absent
mother for a while.”
Kevin Teichman (Rudolph) returns to the Har Shalom stage after a
short hiatus. He wants to thank Shelly (Horn, not Remer -- his much
older sister) for her patient direction, Marci for making him mash his
