Alaska Native peoples for uncountable years prized 

abundant salmon runs to the creek at the center of our town. 

Ketchikan is adapted from the Native name for this stream. 

The City of Ketchikan was incorporated in 1900 by settlers

Arts & Culture 

Ketchikan was cited a few years ago as one of America’s Top 100 Small 

Arts Communities. Galleries and a growing complement of public artworks 

display our appreciation of creative endeavors and the ways they 

enrich our community for residents and our visitors.

from carving to weaving. Contemporary 

artists produce amazing work 

in media from acrylic to sculpture, 

ceramics to watercolor.

Ray Troll’s famed fish art is spawned in Ketchikan and 

travels the world in books, in museum exhibitions and 

on apparel. The Wearable Art Show in February dazzles 

audiences for three nights. Artists are making an openair 

gallery of downtown, with bronze statues, glass art 

and more; piling caps by Terry Pyles and other local 

artists bring marvelous beauty to a utilitarian scene.

Native Culture 

The heritage of northwest Coast tribes in Ketchikan is integral to our 

lifestyle. Twenty percent of residents can trace their heritage to the 

Tlingit, haida and Tsimshian tribes of Alaska. The world’s largest 

collection of totem poles is found here, and you’ll meet the artists 

and teachers whose work keeps the culture vital. 

• Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight State Park 

display poles and clan houses. The two totem parks also feature scheduled 

performances of traditional Native dancers. 

• Totem heritage Center is a federal historic site housing ancient poles retrieved 

from abandoned villages. The center has instructed students in traditional 

Northwest Coast design and Native art since the 1970s. 

• Artisans at Saxman’s carving center work on contemporary totem poles and 

invite you to get close. 

• Southeast Alaska Discovery Center features a replica of a summer fish camp and 

a display depicting traditional Alaska Native life. 

• Tongass historical Museum displays 

ancient tools and implements. 

Ketchikan is unique for its historical and contemporary Northwest Coast arts. Totem parks display nearly a century 

of carving. Poles from old villages are preserved at Totem Heritage Center. See Alaska Native dancers in ceremonial 

regalia; check our online events schedule or ask around. Carvers demonstrate for visitors on several tours. The new pole 

at top is by Donny Varnell and stands with two other carvers’ poles at Ketchikan Indian Community Tribal Health clinic.

Misty Fjords national Monument’s deep canals and inlets were carved 

by glaciers thousands of years ago and their granite grandeur leads 

some to call this place the Yosemite of the north. 

In the blue distance, massive mountains rise from the 

sea; as you get close, you’ll see granite slopes scoured 

ages ago by the weight of glaciers. Near the entrance to 

Misty Fjords is New Eddystone Rock, a remnant of volcanic 

activity; it was named by early English explorers.

The u.S. Forest Service manages the 

monument—much of it as wilderness. 

The near edge of the 2.3 million-acre 

area is 40 miles south of Ketchikan. 

Misty Fjords provides outstanding 

recreational opportunities and wildlife 

habitat. The monument is accessible 

by floatplane or boat from Ketchikan. 

Day cruises and flightseeing trips are 

offered daily in the summer. Kayak 

companies and small charter boat 

operations offer guided overnight trips.

national Forest, the largest in 

the united States. 

This temperate rain forest is integral 

to the lifestyle of Southast Alaska and

Coast tribes, the forest and sea

500 miles from Ketchikan to yakutat 

and never leave Tongass National 

Forest.

Visitors in Tongass National Forest find a broad range of recreational opportunities in places ranging from wilderness to 

well-maintained trails and remote cabins. The scene above is at Ward Lake Recreation Area a few miles north of town, 

with a creek-fed lake, a beach and picnic shelters. A lakeside loop trail features interpretive information about the 

forest’s flora and fauna. Several other trails lead into the forest.

Black bears are commonly seen during spring and summer along salmon streams. If you’re lucky, you’ll see 

whales summering here; if you’re extremely lucky, you’ll see humpback whales feeding in deep water close to 

shore, their huge mouths opening dramatically as they rise from the sea. Mountain goats on rocky steeps and 

alpine country can be seen by flightseers and hikers. Five species of Pacific salmon teem in our stream mouths.

from town.

mid-summer weekdays, departures are 

every 15 minutes after 8 a.m. Fares are 

$5 for adults and $6 for vehicles one 

way. Baggage carts are available.

• The fare is $1 for adults and 50 cents 

for children and seniors. A $2 day pass

• The free downtown bus shuttle runs 

May through September on a 10- to 

20-minute circuit from Berth 4. 

Public parking lots have time restrictions 

or require a permit. One-day permits are 

$5 at City hall on Front Street downtown. 

Taxis meet arriving airport and state 

ferries. Rates are $3.70 a drop, $3.30 

a mile. One-way fare to downtown 

from the airport ferry landing is about 

$12.50; to downtown from the Alaska 

ferry landing, about $11. 

Air taxis using floatplanes provide 

scheduled commuter service as well as 

charters to remote locations. 

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic can be 

heavy downtown. Please be sure to 

observe traffic rules.

West of Ketchikan lies the third largest island in the 

united States. Prince of Wales Island is home to 

several thousand residents in a dozen communities 

ranging in population from 50 to 1,500. The island is a 

prime destination for sportfishing enthusiasts and also 

provides outstanding opportunities for camping, hunting 

and hiking. Alaska Native culture is represented in totem 

poles in several communities.

Camping is a favorite local 

pastime and there are several 

facilities for visitors to enjoy. 

Ward lake Recreation Area includes 

three campgrounds with 47 sites. 

Campsites accommodate vehicles up to 

45 feet long; most sites handle 30- to 

36-foot vehicles. Reservations are 

available. 

Settlers Cove Campground has 14 campsites 

on saltwater 18 miles north of 

town. Thirteen sites accommodate RVs; 

four handle vehicles up to 35 feet long. 

All sites are first-come, first-served. 

Clover Pass Resort offers private RV 

facilities with hookups; they fill quickly 

during peak summer months. Reservations 

well in advance are strongly 

recommended.
