Activity days 2013
with the RSPB

The RSPB manages 26 nature reserves in the south west
of England. That’s about 10,000 acres of amazing habitats,
full of all kinds of wonderful wildlife, just waiting to
be explored.
Girlguiding South West England (GSWE) and the RSPB
have joined together to offer a series of fun activity days
that give Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section
members a chance to get outside, get closer to nature, and
discover more. What are you waiting for?
Booking for all activity days is essential and details of how
to do so are on the back of this programme. As spaces are
limited, please book early to avoid disappointment.
This programme lists RSPB activity days planned for 2013,
correct at the time of going to press. Any additional events
will be advertised at www.rustlebustleandsqueak.co.uk
The events are open to Units from anywhere in the South
West region – we look forward to welcoming you!

Choughs – a wildlife walk
Discover how choughs, the emblem of Cornwall, returned
to the county. In April, find out how we protect the nesting
birds, or try to spot the fledglings in June. This walk is
available at two locations, on two dates at each
location – see below for details.

Beach sweep and sculptures
A day beside the seaside! Have fun making sculptures
from natural materials found on the shore. Help to keep
the beach clean and find out why it’s important for
wildlife that we take our rubbish home.

Migration magic
In April, look for the first summer migrants such as
swallows, house martins and chiffchaffs, which have flown
all the way back from Africa! In June, see how the migrants
have settled in. Can you track down all our warblers?
Bird and butterfly surveys

Explore pretty grass meadows and help record sightings of
all kinds of birds and butterflies. Listen out for skylarks, try
to spot rare cirl buntings, and enjoy stunning coastal views
whilst you munch on your packed lunch.

The big wildlife count
Discover what wildlife lives on a farm. You might hear a
woodpecker drumming or spot a dragonfly darting past.
Explore trails around the reserve and note down all the
wildlife you see. Bring your own packed lunch for a picnic
on the lawn.

Things with wings
Try to spot beautiful dragonflies and damselflies by day,

Feed the ponies
Learn more about how we manage RSPB Labrador Bay,
and how we run the working farm on the reserve in a
wildlife-friendly way. Look out for rare cirl buntings and help
us feed the Dartmoor ponies!

Help a heathland
Get your hands dirty and help us restore the heathland at
RSPB Arne by pulling up some pine tree saplings. Gather up
fallen acorns to take home, and bring them back to our
event next autumn, to help us plant them at the reserve.

Hands on with hazel
Join in with our annual coppicing. Help us create open

Space for nature
Help us manage ancient woodland with traditional
coppicing. Create homes for nightingales, and space

Wetland wonders and pond dipping
Discover what lives in a wetland and see what insects,
mammal signs and plants you can spot. Look out for birds
