FISHTALES by Catfish
Since last months
"Fishtales" article and
my mention to how we
communicated pre-cellphone
days, some of the
"Yuts" youths working in
the warehouse found it
amusing that we all didn't
have cellphones.
I might of mentioned this in the past that my kids were
impressed years ago with some of my texts, and how
I was picking up their lingo. I told them that their
Lingo, shorthand was not something new that they
had invented. Way before the internet (www) and facsimile
(fax) machines, also known as telecopiers,
some of us in business used to communicate via
Telegraphs, where one would input shorthand text
messages on a teleprinter and this form of telecommunication
was also given an abbreviated name,
Telex. This was a cost effective way of using the telephone
lines without tying up an expensive long distance
phone call. Very similar to today's reasoning for
texting. You would type it out on a teleprinter (looked
like a huge electric typewriter) and it would punch
holes and Braille raised dots out of paper ribbon on a
coil. When you were done typing, you torn off the
paper, fed it in a special groove, dialed the parties
telex #, and hit send, and the message would show
up printed on their machine.
Hi C-Fish: L2256F30 pstns in stk frm T.O.
Whse. Plz adv if rqr via grnd or air
? Dale: TRW Edmtn STOP>
"Back in the Day" when you received a Telegram,
it was for either good or bad news ... It was delivered
in person by the Railway or Telephone Company
personnel, whom also read it out loud for all to hear,
then handed you the note. Hopefully it was prepaid,
otherwise if it was sent collect you have to pay to
receive the news first. After every sentence, instead
of a period, the word STOP would actually be written,
and the reader would also read this. This technology
has been around since the 1930's, and prior to that
there was Morse Code, used in war time, and was
recently shocked to learn, that still in use today when
I attended an Emergency Preparedness Meeting.
When all other forms of modern day communication
are down, the old standby Morse Code, Shortwave
Ham Radio, & Landline Telephone might be the only two still
working....reason..non electric or battery powered.
Three Hills Show - Part II by Fred Nelson
The first Saturday of June we attended the Three Hills
Street Weekend. At about 3:00 pm the rain came to
squelch the Show 'n' Shine, and put a serious damper
on the cruise.
This year, for the first time, one-eighth mile drag races
were held on Sunday at the Three Hills Airport. It was
like Shepard Raceway (minus the beers) back in the
seventies. The near-1400 paid spectators couldn't
believe this was a first-time effort. It was well-organized
and came off without a hitch. Anyone who lost in
the first round was able to buy back in, so it was
essentially two races in one.
Page 06
Some of the rules had to be modified a bit, such as
allowing an extra ten seconds so the diesel trucks
could spool up the turbos. But it was shirt-sleeve
weather with no sign of rain. My buddy, Dale and I
cheered all day for another one of our buddies, Faron
Hermanson, who made it to the finals in his white '57
Chev. We've all been friends since Uniquely Street
days. The winners in the three categories were a '71
Duster, '67 Camaro and a '63 Nova. But if we keep
this short, we can probably slide in an extra picture or two.
Dave Morgan’s PIT BIT’s
Here's the question
you need to answer:
Do I want to hit the rear
tires harder? Or less
hard? The idea of hitting
a rear tire harder is
innate to most drag
racers.
After all, Sir Isaac Newton wrote that if you want
something to move faster, make it lighter or add more
force. Many drag racers do both with the instincts to
beat the dickens out of the rear tires. However,
it is a historic fact that Newton never met a drag tire
and that's the critter you've got to keep happy. It is
completely possible to work a tire too hard. So you
have to find that middle ground between too hard
and not hard enough. Like Goldilocks soup, it
(the violence applied to the rear tires) has to be just right.
Consider the rebound (extension) settings on your
rear shocks. These guys are your best friends for
answering this question. If you stiffen the way the rear
shocks extend, then that means the rear differential is
leaving the car slower and hitting the tire with less
force. Many high-torque combinations will find this to
be the case. Before, they were whipping the tires
mercilessly and now they're hitting the tire less
because the differential is applying the tires in a
softer manner. If the car improves, that's the tire saying,"
Thanks buddy, you're finally being nice to me,
I'll do the same for you." The opposite could be true;
the car might improve with a lighter extension setting
on the rear shocks. If this happens, that's the tire saying,
"Whip me, beat me, teach me to hook!"
That one shock knob can give you valuable information
on which way you want to go in your tune-up;
harder or softer. Sometimes, you may not believe
what the tire is telling you. Maybe the shocks are lying
to you, which is possible. Some low-priced units don't
change their damping force after you twisted on a
knob. Other times, you could have something else
wrong in the car, most notably associated with flex or
bind. Who do you talk to then? Interestingly enough,
you have a chat with your engine and torque converter
by changing your launch rpm.
With a manual transmission car, you can smack the
tires harder with a higher launch rpm. So if the car
improves after making the rear extension adjustment
softer, the car and tires will probably like a higher
launch rpm. Now you're smacking the tires with more
torque and rotational inertia from the drive train rather
Page 07
JULY 2012
than having the differential apply the tires harder.
Providing there is nothing mechanically wrong in the
suspension, these two factors should trend together:
lighter extension settings/higher launch rpm; stiffer
extension settings/lower launch rpm.
Before we leave this basic discussion, we must think
about torque converters and how they work. These
things do not behave like a manual clutch. The most
common mistake people make about torque converters
is to think that a higher launch rpm hits the tires
harder, when in fact, the reverse is true. A lower
launch rpm gives the converter a better chance to
multiply torque. Think of it this way; imagine you just
bought a new converter and were told that it has a
5000 rpm stall. Thinking like a manual transmission
racer, you chip the ignition to leave at 5000 rpm.
The only problem is that the converter is finished
multiplying torque. All the torque you have is coming
from the engine, not the converter. So instead of
launching at 5000 rpm, you chip it down to 4000 rpm.
All during the time, while the tach needle is climbing
from 4000 to 5000, the converter is multiplying torque,
which can be used to move the car and never forget;
that's our first goal in this game; move the damn car!
DIABLOS GREASEBALL BASH
As we all know, the Diablos are a car club that fosters
the love of Pre 1964 - traditionally-styled hot rods,
customs and haulers. They share a common interest
in all aspects of car building and knowledge,
but at the end of the day they're really all about the
brotherhood. They have been around since 1998
and have evolved into a very tight nit group of
only 13 members.
For the last eight years the club has put on what has
been called by others, "the best car show in Alberta"
but unfortunately due to two years of less than desirable
weather conditions, the attendance has been
low. This year's show (or event as the guys call it)
was held at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. It started on
Friday night with live music and a burlesque show, followed
by an all day car show and live bands on
Saturday, finishing up with a cruise on Sunday.
Page 09
JULY 2012
The Diablos work hard to make their car show about
Hot Rodding by offering a no-charge admittance, lots
of prizes, trophies, and a wicked raffle which included
a complete Model A chassis. All possible because of
the huge support of sponsors, vendors and the dedicated
hot rodders and customizers who actually
DRIVE their vehicles every year despite weather, distance,
and breakdowns - a big thanks to them!
The club is currently reconsidering it's current show
location to a smaller, more intimate venue to concentrate
more on Pre 1964 hot rods and customs. After 10
great years of building, driving and sharing their vision
of the hot rodding philosophy, the Diablos Greaseball
Bash will definitely be back in 2013, so stay tuned.
Visit them on Facebook for t-shirts, DVDs and more
info. Here’s a few pic’s from the show from Moe Putney.
SANTA MARIA Doug Adams
When the end of May comes along here on
California's Central Coast, the eyes of the custom car
world focus in on Santa Maria-home to the West
Coast Kustoms, Cruise-In Nationals. This year's event
took place May 25th thru the 27th marking the thirtyfirst
anniversary of the Kustoms Show.
Despite threatening skies, cold temps, and good old
Santa Maria wind, spectators turned out by the thousands
for the Friday night cruise and the Saturday-
Sunday show. I talked to some folks that caravanned
down the coast from San Francisco and they told me
that they drove in rain most of the way. The same
story came from folks traveling up from the L.A. area.
For once, Santa Maria was saved from precipitation.
All of the events surrounding the show, and the show,
itself went off without a hitch. After a few slow months,
with really no show activity to speak of in the area, it
was nice to get back out there and check out some
cars. I was a little nervous going into this show though
because not only did I have to get my material for
Quick-Times, I had signed on to do a story for upscale
deluxe news stand magazine. There is a little more
pressure than normal when doing magazine coverage
In particular, this magazine because the cars I photograph
have to fit a specific period and the parameters
of the Editor. This makes the show much smaller
before it even starts. Add to the fact that two days
before the show started, I received an email from my
editor informing me that his management cut nine
days out of his production schedule. I had to have all
of my stuff on his desk the Tuesday after the show.
Normally when I sit down to get my story together for
an event, I do a little online research just so I get the
facts straight. Then I combine that with what I have
gathered and a few days later I usually have a result
that I'm happy with. In this case, I had less than fortyeight
hours to write a lead-in story, sort and caption
thirty photos, and be ready for the post office Tuesday
morning. Fortunately for me, Monday was a national
holiday and there was no mail service buying me an
extra day!
Undaunted, I got a jump on things and started doing
my research which gave me a good plan going into
the weekend. Plus it taught me a few things I didn't
know. One thing I always fear is getting the facts
wrong. If incorrect information makes it by the
Editor and into print, it's not a good day and can be
career limiting. One thing I try not to do is just read
some information online and put my own twist on it.
So going in, I knew I had to talk to all of the people
that own the cars that I was going to submit. But I
needed more! I wanted to talk to some of the folks
Page 10
that were there from the beginning, but wondered
would I even see any of these people. With my plan in
place, I took to the streets of Santa Maria and the
Historic Santa Maria Inn. The Santa Maria Inn is the
show's headquarters and check-in point for all of the
participants. On the days before the show starts, the
Inn is ground zero and a place to see some pretty
sweet cars.
Friday is really the busiest day at the Inn and all of the
parking spots in front of and around the Inn are
reserved for show cars. The parade of customs and
hot rods is endless, and the action doesn't stop until
well after the cruise ends later in the evening. I pulled
in at about 9am and the place was already jumping.
Since my F-150 really isn't show quality, I parked
across the street behind a fast food place in a spot
that would give me a clear escape route once the
cruise was in progress. Armed with a couple Canon's
(cameras), I was on the hunt and shooting. There
was no shortage of targets. One thing that I noticed
was that trend in car building has yet again shifted. It
used to be Rat Rods were the thing and they were
everywhere. Then, mild customs with flat paint were
in. This was the year of the Mercury. There were
Mercs everywhere you turned and conversely very
few Rat Rods or true traditional hot rods in the crowd.
After spending the day taking photos, I had some
lunch at a local eatery and returned to the action. As
hard as it was, I made the choice to forego a cold
refreshing beverage in the Inn's bar. Instead, I got in
line at the Inn's coffee bar. I needed to warm-up a little!
When it came time for the cruise to start, I had my
position curbside. Once the cars rolled out onto
Broadway, I noticed a group of photographers forming
in the middle of the street--a good vantage point for
shooting both lanes of cruisers. I liked the light where
I was sitting, for the time being. But as it got darker, I
too made it out on to the street. After about fifteen
minutes, I noticed this lady kind of patrolling the
street. She eventually made her way to me and asked
if I was with a magazine. I said yes, introduced
myself, and she introduces herself as Penny Pichette.
I thought I had just won the lottery because Penny is
exactly the person I wanted to interview. Since I had
Penny one-on-one, albeit in the middle of the street,
in the middle of a car cruise, I decided to go for it.
Penny really didn't give me any information that I hadn't
already read on her website, but it was interesting
how she told the story and played traffic cop and
crowd control at the same time--never missing a beat.
The story of The West Coast Kustoms Car Club and
the evolution of The Cruise In Nationals started back

fax ads to 403-886-8600
in the 1970's when Penny and her late husband, Rich
Pichette, bought a little burger joint called The Jet in
Sunnymeade, California (south east of Pomona).
Back then, the hot spot to cruise was Angelo's Drive
In in Anaheim. It was quite a drive from Sunnymeade
in a hot rod. So Rich and a few of his friends formed
a club called The West Coast Kustoms, and The Jet
became their weekend cruise spot.
In the beginning, there were very few cars. But soon
thereafter, the Kustoms popularity grew as did their
membership. A group of guys from San Francisco
heard about the club and wanted to join. With the
club going pretty good, Rich decided to put together
an event in the middle of the state that was equal
driving distance for members from the north and
south. Several cities were contacted and Paso Robles
was the only one that would give the club a place to
gather--park by the lake. In later years, the show
moved to the center of downtown Paso until moving
to its new home Santa Maria. Now each Memorial
Day weekend, the West Coast Kustoms Car Club
welcomes car clubs and participants from around the world
to their little get together at The Santa Maria Fairpark.
Things have settled in pretty good for the show in
Santa Maria, and I hope it's there for years to come.
It's nice having a show of this caliber right in my
backyard. Enjoy the photos. We'll see what I can find
for next month,
Sitko Report...Vegas
While Troy, Nathan and Wayne were making the long
haul with the race car, Randy and myself landed at
the Las Vegas airport, it was 9:45 am, and 103
degrees already outside. Stifling; I couldn't envision
how we were going to work at the race track in that
kind of heat. Decided to go to Wal-Mart to buy some
big fans, now we were set..
Everyone arrived in one piece (luckily Troy, Nathan
and Wayne avoided hitting the big elk on the way
down), so we headed out to the track Thursday to
work on the car. No racing today, we were just checking
everything over to make sure it was as good as it
could be. Very warm, but not so stifling as the day
before. Checked the cam timing, and it was off by 4
degrees. That's weird. Took the front cover off the
motor to check, and all the bolts were loose. Disaster
averted. Weather forecast for Friday, testing day, was
windy (25 mph), with gusts to 55 mph. Friday, arrived
early at the track, again taking care of some small
details. Also re-stripped the blower, thought it was a
good idea since the air is so thin there. The weather
guys were actually right, too windy to put the awning up, and
by 3 pm, they had called off the test session. That puts us
behind the 8 ball, we really needed to see what our 6.04
Edmonton tune-up would do on this track and in this air.
Page 20
e-mail ads@quick-times.com
Saturday, 3 qualifying runs to get in the show.
Quickest 8 qualify to race Sunday, and there are 24
funny cars on the property. First run, 6.27 at 214
mph, that would have been Fridays test run, not too
impressive. Jumped on the engine hard on the second
run with almost 3% more nitro and more clutch,
a much improved 6.06 at 224 mph that put us in the
12th spot. The number on the board said 5.99 was
the current bump spot, we needed to somehow sneak
under that number! 2.5% more Nitro, and a few
adjustments of the port nozzles, and there it was,
our first 5 second run, 5.96 at 227 mph. After high
fiving on the starting line, we realized that the bump
spot had changed to 5.92, so we finished 10th.
Still happy with the 5.96 though.
Since we were not racing on Sunday, we were able
to watch Troy go rounds in the Ace nostalgia alcohol
funny car. It was exciting to see him go all the way to
the final in his first race with the car.
We made great strides this weekend, didn't hurt
anything, and had a lot of fun doing it. We look forward
to our next couple of events to see if we can
improve a bit more.

SUPERNATIONALS by Jack Feige
43rd Annual Toyota Super nationals, Old Bridge
TownshipRaceway Park, Englishtown New Jersey
The ninth stop on the 2012 Full Throttle
tour rolled into Englishtowns Raceway Park, known for
it`s large crowds and record setting track conditions.
This year`s event did not disappoint although at times
the weather played a factor with changing conditions.
This surely giving the crew chiefs of the fuel cars a lot
to think about on set ups. Fridays first pro session was
run under overcast skies. Top Fuels first session saw
the pace set by Tony Schumacher`s Army car and
Spencer Massey in the Prestone DSR other team car
serving notice to the rest of the field they were going
to be fast. Tony with a 3.75 @ 327.11mph and
Spencer 3.76 @ 326.40mph a great race!
Funny Car round one found team Force on top with a
surprising Mike Neff on the pole for the first time this
season with a 4.05 @ 312.71 mph for the Castrol
white mustang.Teammate Robert Hight was right there
with Neff at 4.07 @ 312.71 identical mph for the two
team Force cars. On to round two the evening session
with a cool feel in the air and a track that seemed to
retain it`s grip. We might be in for an interesting
evening. Opening the session, Brandon Bernstein runs
his personal quickest 3.76 @ 323.27 mph showing the
track has potential to be very fast. As the round continued
the teams seemed confident to run a healthy dose
of nitro. As the air was thick with fuel that teared the
eyes and the haze that hoovered over the starting line
with that sweet sent that irritated your nose and throat,
it was magic waiting to happen. And happen it did as
the last set rolled through the burn out, fuel pouring
from the headers. Team DSR was locked and loaded
Spencer Massey and Tony Schumacher had the
crowds attention and when the score boards lite up.
Spencer Massey thundered to the fastest pass in top
fuel history and the fourth fastest run in the thousand
foot era 3.72 @ 329.91mph. But not far behind and a
very stout pass in his own right the "Sarge" clicked off
a 3.74 @ 325.92 mph making it the fastest top fuel
side by side pass to date.
But the magic of E-Town was not over yet as we
moved into the final qualifying session for Funny car
for Friday. As the pairings went off there was nothing
to indicate something would match the top fuelers. But
for those of us on the starting line photographing the
event, hope of a three second pass or maybe a side
by side three second pass. Our last hope was the final
pair rolling into the staging beams
Mike Neff and Ron Capps in the Nappa Dodge. They
both leave as quickly as it flashed green it was over
Page 22
for Neff as he shook hard and seemed to give up the
chase. But in the other lane Ron Capps was on a mission
as he thundered into the lights the score board
flashed a 3.96 @ 320.89 mph. Making the Nappa
dodge the quickest flopper, only Matt Hagan had been
in the three`s before this pass. This put Capps in P1
and forever part of E-towns magic on a truly memorable
pass
Pro Stock for the first two rounds of qualifying found
Jason Line 6.51 @ 212.16 in the Summit Racing GXP.
In the second slot Allen Johnson in the team
Mopar/J&J racing Avenger,6.52 @ 211.56. A high lite
of round two saw the debut of Summit Racings 2012
Camaro, driven by Greg Anderson who filled the number
nine slot with a 6.55 @ 211.56.
On to Saturday, Top fuel no one really challenged
Spencer Massey for the number one spot and T.J.
Zizzo sat in the number sixteen slot when the smoke
cleared. Twenty one cars battled for the sixteen car
field, of the outsiders looking in Cory Mac could only
get as high as number nineteen but it was good to
see him back in the hunt. Funny Car same here as
Ron Capps held the number one slot all day. While
Bob Bode held the number sixteen slot,Twenty cars
turned out to make the sixteen car field for Sundays
finals. Pro stock eight teen cars showed up for the sixteen
spots.Jason Line took his twenty ninth pole at E-
Town at the other end was Grace Howell in the
Cunningham Sand and Gravel Mustang.
Pro stock motorcycle Eddie Krawiec on his Vance and
Hines Screaming Eagle held the number one spot.
And Joe DeSantis on a Suzuki held the number sixteen
spot, eight teen bikes were entered.
The Pro Mods were at E-Town, Mike Castellana in the
Al-Anabi Camaro held the pole 5.85 @ 245,72 going
into the first round. Kevin McCurdy`s 68 Camaro 6.09
@231.24 sat on the sixteen spot.
Sunday came with the anticipation of great side by
side racing, a track that held on to it`s bite. Top Fuel
opened the show and by the time the finals came into
play almost everything changed. As a young Steve
Torrance in his only second final round appearance
would face Brandon Bernstein. The pair did not disappoint
the crowd as Torrance just got by Bernstein. The
Richard Hogan tuned Torrance fueler clicked off a winning
3.800 @ 323.66 mph while Brandons very game
3,807 @ 321.44 was a margin of about nine feet a
very tight race!

While on the Funny car side it was an all DSR final as
the Force Mustangs just didn't`t have the right stuff to
stop team DSR this weekend. Johnny Gray faced a
very fast Ron Capps this would be the third time the
two would meet in a final. As both won in previous
match ups this would be the tie breaker. Capps left
first but shook and smoked the tires as that was all
that Gray needed to get the win light. This would be
johnny Grays second career win a 4.07 @ 314.39 to
Capps slowing 5.35 @160.71. Ron Capps did not run
the required ten percent to back up his run on Friday
night, although it was the quickest ever for the Funny
cars it was not an official record. But it sure was
something to wittiness.
Pro Stock finals the Summit cars of Jason Line and
Greg Anderson who debut the brand new 2012
Camaro. Line was still driveing the proven GXP. As
both cars staged and the flash of green Jason Line
was out first on Greg Anderson as the two headed for
the thousand foot mark something failed on Lines
GXP. This was all that Anderson needed to click the
win light and to give the new Camaro it`s first win.
Anderson's numbers were 6.56 @ 212.03 mph and
Lines broken 6,58 @ 200.98 mph. The last time a
Camaro won Pro Stock was at the World Finals in
2000.
Page 23
Pro Stock Motorcycle Eddie Krawiec over a red
were as follows. Pro Mod went to Danny Rowe.
Comp Eliminator Arnie Martel.Super Stock Brian
Martel. Stock Joe Santangelo. Super Comp Franklin
Di Bartolomeo.Super Gas Ray Sawyer and for Super
Well that wraps up the 43rd Toyota NHRA
Supernationals, Toyota has signed a three year deal
to be the title sponsor for this race. Thank you
Toyota! Odds and Ends, Traxxas put on a great
display of RC cars and trucks kept the fans
entertained.
The crowds were big the weather for the most part
was good the racing was close and fast,
all part of E-Towns Magic!
LOUD - FAST - REAL Clothing Line Introduced
Southern California: In celebration of CAR CRAFT Magazine's impending
60th anniversary, GTUSA has introduced a new line of clothing that
reinforces CAR CRAFT's LOUD, FAST, REAL editorial message.
First published under the title HONK! in April 1953, CAR CRAFT was
edited by the legendary Wally Parks and although pocket-sized (so that
enthusiastic young readers could hide it in their school books), it soon
became a major title in what was to become the Petersen Publishing empire.
Sixty years on, under the editorship of Doug Glad, CAR CRAFT
remains essential reading for the crowd that likes their cars, well-loud,
fast and real. To help celebrate 60 years of passion GTUSA is rolling
out a line of clothing designed to fit the lifestyle of CAR CRAFT readers.
High-quality Flex Fit caps are also included in the collection, and share
the line's mixture of trendy and hard-core enthusiast graphics. As the
60th Anniversary approaches, more exciting products will be introduced.
To purchase and learn more go to genuinecarcraft.com
Or, they can be purchased from the Petersen Automotive Museum,
6060 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. www.petersen.org
For more information, dealer pricing, alternative photographs or
samples, please contact Alex at: alex@transmission77.com
