18 REMINISCENCES OF FAMOUS GEORGIANS.<br />

Intosh, who commanded <strong>the</strong> Continental troops in Sa<br />

vannah, thought to compliment Mr. Bulloch upon <strong>the</strong><br />

high <strong>of</strong>fice which he held as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executive<br />

Council by ordering a sentinel to be posted at his door.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> republican instinct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief magistrate arose<br />

in rebellion and he requested <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sentinel,<br />

stating that he was himself only <strong>the</strong> servant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people,<br />

and that he wished to avoid on all occasions <strong>the</strong> appear<br />

ance <strong>of</strong> ostentation.<br />

To establish <strong>the</strong> proper genealogical relationship be<br />

tween <strong>the</strong> present Chief Executive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States<br />

and <strong>the</strong> first Chief Executive <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> it may be said<br />

that <strong>the</strong> President's mo<strong>the</strong>r was Martha Bulloch. She<br />

was <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Major James Stephen Bulloch, <strong>the</strong><br />

grandson <strong>of</strong> Archibald Bulloch. During <strong>the</strong> early part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> last century Major Bulloch moved from <strong>the</strong> tide<br />

water levels to <strong>the</strong> upper foothills, locating at Roswell,<br />

<strong>Georgia</strong>, some twenty miles north <strong>of</strong> what is now Atlan<br />

ta ; but Atlanta, in those days, was not even so much as<br />

"a babe in <strong>the</strong> woods." The old Bulloch homestead in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> President's mo<strong>the</strong>r was born is still standing at<br />

Roswell an old-time Sou<strong>the</strong>rn mansion, modeled upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> classical pattern, \vith immense Doric pillars support<br />

ing <strong>the</strong> spacious veranda in front, and not unlike <strong>the</strong> fa<br />

mous ante-bellum home <strong>of</strong> General Lee at Arlington.<br />

The President himself enjoyed <strong>the</strong> pleasure <strong>of</strong> standing<br />

under <strong>the</strong> ancestral ro<strong>of</strong> on his visit to <strong>Georgia</strong> in <strong>the</strong> fall<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1905.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> little town <strong>of</strong> Roswell will swell with pride at<br />

<strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> that visit down to <strong>the</strong> latest generation.
