GARAGE SALE SURVEY
Thirty homes comprised of nearly 60 residents responded to the question posed by the Link in the
December 2012 issue regarding whether or not to continue the fall community-wide garage sale.
The responses returned by residents included:
Yes – 23
• Convenience of having the sale at home is a plus. It is difficult to drag all one’s items to Mountain
Shadows. Not as young as we used to be.
• Divide the areas and have the sale on
different days to ensure all participants get
some sales.
GOOD LUCK, MARY
• Provided a great chance to visit/interact
with neighbors.
• One day sale with maps.
• Great way to clean out the garage.
• Mountain Shadows parking lot sale fee
not inclusive of everyone.
• Have one of each – Mountain Shadows
and community wide.
• Great entertainment close to home
No – 7
• May have contributed to an increase
in burglaries.
• Drivers left black marks on driveways
• Traffic blocked driveways and
streets
• Mountain Shadows sale is a social
event for residents
Letter From The Executive Director
Building A Sense Of Community
Since beginning my position as Executive Director of Sun
City Summerlin, I have met so many wonderful
homeowners; and in talking with them about the
community a strong sense of urgency has been expressed
to me regarding the rise in community burglaries.
A safer community can be achieved through effective
communication among residents and their neighbors. This is
why I am inviting each resident to begin
participation in a new program that is
coming to our community through the
City of Las Vegas, Neighborhood Watch.
Some of the bene ts of enacting a
Neighborhood Watch program include
deterring criminal activity, building
bonds with neighbors, stimulating
neighborhood awareness, providing Photo by Stu Gershon
instruction to residents on how to observe and report
suspicious activities and encouraging residents to work
collaboratively to build a better community.
In addition to communicating more effectively with
neighbors and Neighborhood Watch groups, direct communication
with local law enforcement is critical. We are for-
6
tunate to have our all-volunteer patrol service; however, a
Neighborhood Watch program will involve both the residents
as well as representatives from the Metropolitan Police
Department. Metro will assist in ensuring the effectiveness
of the Neighborhood Watch program by providing training,
equipment and speci cally assigned officers. The officers
who are assigned to a particular neighborhood attend watch
program meetings and inform the watch group on the
types of crimes to be on the alert for by
providing reports from the surrounding
area.
A Neighborhood Watch program can
make Sun City Summerlin a safer
community for all. I encourage all
residents to get to know their neighbors.
Aside from the benefit of increased
public safety, a Neighborhood Watch can
make a more friendly and pleasant community for all who
call Sun City Summerlin home.
If you have any questions, or would like further information
regarding the Neighborhood Watch program, please contact
me, Patricia Rosia, at (702) 966-1409, or by email to
pattyr@suncitylv.com.

Stay Fit to Improve
Your Quality of Life
Staying t as we age is not only a
matter of maintaining or improving
our appearance. It is also about
prolonging our quality of life, our
independence and, indeed, life
itself. Regular exercise enhances
quality of sleep, raises your metabolism
to burn more calories, gives you
energy, increases bone density and
neuromuscular facilitation, improves
motor skills, balance, strength and
Kristie McWhorter
Director of Fitness
con dence, and promotes heart health, general health and
brain function.
Strength is the most often neglected element of tness
in the 50-plus crowd. As we age we lose muscle mass. Our
muscles contribute to the support and stability of our joints.
An arthritic knee joint, for example, needs as much muscular
support as it can get, since the cartilage is compromised.
Functional strength is the real world use of our muscles.
Getting out of a car, climbing stairs, getting out of the
bathtub, carrying groceries and opening a jar are all examples
of functional strength. Strength training gives us the
ability to perform these activities that, in turn, gives us the
confidence we need to live day to day.
We are never too old to get t. Eighty-year-old muscle
will respond by getting stronger just as 18-year-old muscle
will. Walking, as our sole form of exercise, will not provide
enough range or load to effectively recruit sufficient muscle
mass to restore or preserve the functional strength we need.
Remember that a fitness program should address
strength, endurance, cardio or aerobic activity, flexibility
and balance. You can start now by attending an equipment
orientation class or one of our group tness classes.
Mr. Gym Etiquette
Tip: Appropriate shoes should be worn in the tness centers
for safety. Closed-toe, rubber-soled shoes are required for
weight rooms. Sandals and wedge shoes are not allowed in
the weight rooms. Clean pool shoes are allowed as long
they are not worn outside (i.e. sidewalks, parking lots).

Jean Morton:
Working Back From Injury
“My husband and I moved to Sun City because of all the
wonderful tness centers, swimming pools, tennis courts and,
of course, our grandchildren. Little did I know how important
they would be in our
retirement,” said Sun City
resident Jean Morton.
Jean, who suffered a
stroke last April, said she
got out of bed and hit the
oor. “I lost my left side.
I was unable to walk and
my speech was impaired.
Equipment Orientation
My heart started to brillate shortly afterwards and that
was the problem,” she said.
During her recovery, Jean credits her former tness level
for the strides she has been able to make. That and her
husband, Bill, whom she says, “He’s been my left-handed
man the whole time – at the hospital, at home. We’ve been
married for 54 years.”
Today, Jean, who always has been a swimmer, started off
slow, walking with Bill with the help of a walker and now
she’s up to 14 blocks. Shortly thereafter, she decided to take
a Sit & Be Fit class at SCSCAI.
“It was a little scary because I didn’t know what would
happen. But thanks to some helpful instructors, which made
the class fun, I now have more strength and self-con dence.
My life is back on track.”
SCSCAI Fitness Assistant Melissa George shows residents Lynda Amorosi and Lenny Nevins the correct way to use the equipment
at the Desert Vista fitness center during a recent class. Below, Beth Gerson works out on the arm ergometer
Community News: Business Beat
There’s a lot of business brewing in Sun City Summerlin, and the retail centers at the corner of Del Webb and Sun City boulevards
are prime examples of recent growth. One look inside the center anchored by CVS, on the southwest side of the intersection, is Safe
Step Walk-In Tubs. Across the street, Bella Si Salon moved into the space formerly occupied by G&S Salon in November.
Safe Step Walk-In Tubs of Nevada
In a country where the senior statistic welcomes 10,000
new members a day, the topic of safety is of paramount
concern in almost all day-to-day decisions.
“People just don’t come in and buy a walk-in tub. They
purchase one because they need it,” said Mitch Altman, who
opened Safe Step Walk-In Tubs in Sun City in January.
And the product does what it was designed to do, added
Bella Si Salon
“In the salon the customer is king, or queen,” said Bella Si
Salon owner Terry Armitage, who has lived in Las Vegas since
Mitch, explaining how each tub enables seniors to stay in
their homes longer, not to mention the spa-like feel and the
therapeutic value.
“It’s about independence. It’s about being able to take a
bath safely, at home, by yourself, with dignity. Our typical
customer tells us that it has been years since they have been
able to really take a relaxing bath safely. More and more,
bathing becomes the No. 1 reason why people go into
assisted living, and this product can help extend the time
people stay in their homes.”
The price of each tub includes complete installation by a
factory-trained, licensed/bonded installer.
Mitch and his wife, Debbie, say; “Our concept is a senior
independence store. There are so many wonderful new
products on the market that are designed with seniors in
mind to help protect them and allow them to safely age
gracefully in their own homes. This store is a one-stop
safety shop featuring walk-in tubs, bath/tub conversion
walk-in showers, as well as a variety of designer grab bars,
power-lift recliners and senior-mobility products.”
For more information on Safe Step Walk-In Tubs, call
765-5111.
1997, and has over 35 years of business ownership experience.
A full-service day spa, Bella Si offers treatments from
custom facials to waxing and mani/pedis to old-time barber
services with a straight-edge shave. In addition, all hair
services, including trims, cuts, sets, styling, color and highlights
are served up by a team of experienced stylists familiar
with traditional and modern techniques for men and women.
“We make it fun in here,” said Terry. “It's not just a salon,
but a small-knit family. We always have a special going on,”
and lively conversation, snacks and a bright vibe guarantee a
return visit. In fact, one recent customer couldn’t help but say
after paying his bill, “I’ll be back as soon as it grows back.”
Common Area Properties (CAP)
Landscape Inspections Ensure Blooming Beauty
Each month, an inspector with the Common Area Properties
Committee climbs into Louis Darling’s truck to ride around
the community and check for landscaping-related issues.
Louis is the director of landscape for Sun City Summerlin,
and he is extremely knowledgeable about all of the plants in
our community.
The inspection takes the two on a circuit of Del Webb,
Sun City, Thomas Ryan, Lake Mead and Rampart boulevards
and Anasazi Drive. Within the community, both sides of the
streets and the medians are scrutinized, as well as both sides
and the median of Lake Mead boulevard, west of Anasazi
Drive. From there, only the north side of Lake Mead boule-
Landscape
Time to Love Your Lantanas
Spring marches on, and if the weather holds up it will be time
to wake up your garden soon. One thing you can do now is
trim and fertilize your lantanas. The landscape department
will resume its fertilizing programs, and I suggest you do the
20
vard is ours, along with the west side of Anasazi Drive and
the west side of Rampart Boulevard.
The inspection team is looking for any dead or dying
plants, whether they are trees, bushes or ground-cover
plants. The goal is to identify, as soon as possible, the areas
that require the attention of our Landscape Maintenance
staff. It is not unusual for Louis to get on his radio during
the ride to immediately direct his staff to an unsightly area.
Of course, they also watch for any apparent watering
problems. Louis is especially good at knowing when a plant
looks stressed due to lack of water.
Louis is careful to let the inspector know of all the plans
to work on various areas, especially where the watering
system is being reconstructed, new owering plants are to
be placed or replacement plants are imminent. Winter
inspections are a challenge due to the deciduous trees, and
many plants are simply placed on the watch list to return
for a look as new growth begins in the spring.
Our Landscape Department does an outstanding job of
keeping up with all of our common area landscaping, making
our community one of the most beautiful in the Las Vegas
Valley. We can thank our very dedicated Director, Louis
Darling, for our wonderful aesthetics. His caring shows!
same. As I normally say, “Always be sure to use a well-balanced
fertilizer. And, if you can add organic material to your
plants, then do so.” I know it can be difficult, but if you add
organics, your plants will love you.
A few quick reminders on how to do it:
Rake back the decorative rock from around your plants
and spread mulch, soil conditioners and fertilizer
Lightly cultivate the mixture into the soil
Spread your rock back over the area.
Water thoroughly when you are done.
Keep in mind you do not need to do all your plants at
the same time.
The landscape department is now watering three days a
week – turf on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Drip is
set for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Both are at night.
Security Patrol — A Sun City Summerlin Organization 254-2303
Think Smart, Avoid Being a Victim of Crime
(Editor’s note: This is the second story in a two-part series designed
to help residents think outside the box when it comes to security
at home.)
Lou Polizzotti
Security Patrol
Chief
Never open your door to anyone
you do not know. Use the peephole
or talk through the security
door. Don’t be fooled or drop
your guard if someone calls you
by your name. Bad guys learn
your name by taking a quick
peek inside your mailbox.
Crooks can be very clever.
Residents should be equally
shrewd about detecting them.
Is one of Sun City’s burglars
a woman? A developing theory
among Security Patrol officers
suggests that possibility. Might residents be less suspicious of
a strange woman at their door, than they would be of a man?
Be alert and report unusual vehicles, loiterers, trucks with no
visible identification, anyone with a clipboard who appears
to be canvassing homes, or a stranger looking into a
mailbox to the Security Patrol.
Burglars see Security Patrol cars driving through the
community. Often, that is enough to deter them. Drivers
wave to let everyone know they have seen them and they
develop instincts to spot something out of the ordinary.
Patrol Officers know dog-walkers, when and where they
walk and even their pet’s name. They become familiar with
landscapers, mail carriers, bike riders, joggers, and they
recognize residents who regularly walk in certain areas.
It was daytime when an open garage door off Button
Willow Drive caught Security Patrol Chief Lou Polizzotti’s
attention. Lou said, “Something about it didn't seem right.”
After nding no one at the house, Lou relayed the address to
the Patrol dispatcher, who called the resident’s Emergency
Contact Number. Sure enough, the resident was away and the
garage should not have been open. It was one of 238 garage
doors that patrol officers discovered and had secured last
month.
Other items to consider to help boost your security at
home include:
Always keep car keys nearby if they have an alarm button.
If you hear a noise outside your home, don’t hesitate to
depress the key alarm to activate the car’s horn. Don't worry
about waking a neighbor; the loud horn will discourage any
intruder.
If your dog barks at night, do not try to quiet him/her.
He/she senses something outside that you don’t hear. Let
them bark; that’s their job.
It is always important to lock the door between the garage
and your home. Do not rely on a closed garage door for
absolute security. Garage doors can be breached. Lock your
car doors while the car is inside the garage.
Security Patrol officers are ready to help you, any time.
Never hesitate to call, 254-2303.
Six signs posted at the entrances of Sun City Summerlin
in January alert drivers that the community is under
observation by the Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol 24/7.
If you live in Sun City Summerlin, you will be ready.
Your Sun City Summerlin Preparedness Committee
(CPC) has been working for the last two years to prepare a
plan to face such an emergency and we’re initiating a new
series of meetings with the community to ensure that our
residents will be ready also.
Our rst meeting will be on Sheltering In Place, March
Because there were so many
comments (about 5,000 total),
I just can’t address each individual
comment so, you ask, what
did we do with the responses?
Section three of the Policies
and Procedures manual provides
a detailed description of the
SCSCAI committee structure.
The various committees are
responsible for certain aspects
of our community, such as Common Area Properties, Finance,
Legal Services and so on. Committee members are residents
just like you who look at issues and make recommendations to
the SCSCAI Board of Directors when needed. Each month
the Link publishes a calendar showing the date when each
committee meets. To highlight one very busy committee, the
Common Area Properties Committee, which is responsible
for our facilities and grounds, you will see how members are
tasked to tour each facility on a regular basis to determine
needed improvements. Your comments concerning our properties
were referred to that committee for consideration.
Equally, all survey comments were sent to the appropriate
committees for consideration.
Many of the recommendations were contradictory (too
much vegetation/too little vegetation; pools too hot/pools
too cold). Committee members are busy sorting through all
responses to arrive at the best decision based on their
experience. (Note that residents are encouraged to attend
committee meetings if they want to partake in discussions
about particular comments.) Don’t wait for another survey
if you want to make a recommendation on making things
better. Instead, go to the appropriate committee meeting
and make your thoughts known.
One last point on the comments received: Even if approved,
implementation can take some time due to budget issues or
the prioritization of in-house manpower.
Please believe that we do care. I have read EVERY one of
the almost 600 resident responses. Thank you so much for
taking the time to help make Sun City Summerlin a better
place to live.
If you have a question on the survey, please contact me
Police Department’s Homeland Security/Emergency
Management Bureau to discuss the concept of “sheltering
They will discuss making a plan and building a kit that
will get residents through a natural disaster for the rst 72
hours, or until professional help arrives.
This will be the rst of several classes that the CPC will
conduct over the next few months, featuring speakers from
the Red Cross for CPR training; Las Vegas Fire & Rescue,
NV Energy, Southwest Gas, the Las Vegas Water District and
the Las Vegas and Clark County Emergency Response teams.
In addition, we will continue our program of training
community volunteers to become members of our
Chartered Clubs
Mountain Shadows Display Case:
Photography Club
P hotography
Club members have been honing their
skills since the club began in 1995. In February,
their meeting focused on pet photography, one of
many workshops topics the Club plans throughout the
year. Members shared favorite pet pictures and shot pet
portraits in their studio at
Desert Vista. When asked
what’s the best way to
take a good pet picture,
one member replied, “To
get one really good shot,
take a lot of them.” The
pet photographer also
must remember to get
down to the animal’s level,
which also applies when
taking children’s photos.
Club President Bill Lane
says members participate
in eld trips and educational seminars in their eternal quest
to shoot better pictures. The
emphasis of the Club is on
camera pro ciency, as well as
in developing a photographer’s
eye for good pictures.
The group welcomes anyone
who wants to improve his
or her photography skills.
Sophisticated equipment
isn’t a requirement; digital
point and shoot cameras are
ne.
In the club’s newsletter,
member Joel Jacobs
addresses such topics as how to buy a digital camera.
He examines the type of photos to be taken, experience
level and budget.
Members’ favorite photos will be on display all month
in the showcases at Mountain Shadows. Be sure to stop
by and take a look. The Club meets the second Thursday
of every month. Annual dues are $15. For information, call
Bill Lane, 233-9363.
Classical Music Club Plays
to the Heartstrings
W
hat do you have going on at the Starbright
Theatre? Why is the parking lot full of cars?”
Those were the questions the Pinnacle Fitness
Monitor posed to the Social Monitor one Monday evening
last year. Don, who is the Monday night monitor at the
Starbright, replied, “It’s the Classical Music Club.”
The club began in 1997 as the Chamber Music Club.
According to charter member Anna Gaspar, the Club rst
met in members’ homes, then in the music room at the
Pinnacle. At the present time, concerts are held at the
Starbright Theatre. Concerts are arranged when musicians’
schedules permit. The goal is to have a concert monthly.
It is no secret that the Las Vegas area is rich with
musical talent, ranging from well-known professionals to
extremely talented amateurs. These people come to the
Club because they are delighted to share their love of
classical music with Sun City residents who have the
same passion. January’s concert featured Firenze, a group
of professional string players, along with Aaron Ramsey,
pianist, percussionist and composer, along with other
members of his musical group.
Recently, entertainers have included Cellicentric (three
cellists who performed in Celine Dion’s orchestra); pianists
Voltaire Verzosa (principal with the Las Vegas Philharmonic);
Dr. Mykola Suk (professor of piano at UNLV);
and Philip Fortenberry (presently associate conductor and
keyboard player with “Jersey Boys” at Paris Las Vegas);
and Genevieve Gundlach’s Las Vegas Piano Quintet,
whose love of classical music makes Mondays at the
Starbright truly wonderful. For more information about
the club, contact Ruth Hart, 256-1306, or Tammy Collins
at 838-0830 or candtcollins@mac.com.
