WeStern Mountaineering
This catalogue is filled with photos of wilderness pioneers exploring the Sierras during the early 1900’s. Robert “Grandpa”
Schaezlein shared his passion for the mountains with his son, Robert and grandson, Gary, who was inspired to make a
lasting connection to the outdoors. Gary Schaezlein founded Western Mountaineering in 1970 because of the inspiration
generated in the outings with his father and grandfather, who appears in these photos. His favorite places included “Little
Yosemite Valley” (before Hetch Hetchy), Jack Main Canyon, the Cherry Creek drainage and Kibby Lake. Special thanks to
the Schaezlein family for the opportunity to use these spectacular historical photos which reveal the spirit of adventure
that started it all.
Sleeping BagS featureS
along with quality materials and workmanship, our design features
set our sleeping bags apart from all others. our hood openings are more
contoured in shape so that even at rest the sides of the hood lie closer to
your face. We build the differential into our mummy bags so that the shell
fabric “breaks” to create better loft across the width of the bags. The Vblock
Side baffle found in our winter bags ensures positive down control
on the top, bottom and along the sides of the bag. our extremeLite bags
use the newest, most compressible and lightest weight fabrics available. all
of these design features are intended to give you a well functioning bag
that will last a long time.
aBout our productS
With over 30 bags to choose from we have made it easier for you to
choose the best fitting bag. Start by judging your body size, or what kind
of room you need to stay comfortable throughout the night. our wide
cut semi-rectangular bags are named after north american forest Trees.
This is the choice for people needing lots of room regardless of weight.
Some of these bags feature hoods. our wide cut mummy bags run 62” to
66” in shoulder girth and are named after north american Mammals. This
is the standard cut bag for most lightweight mountaineering. We also have
a series of narrow cut mummy bags and they are named after our north
american indian Tribes and nations. These bags provide the most savings
in weight and are the most temperature efficient. They are extremely
compressible, making them easier to carry around. our extremeLite bags
are easily identified by the suffix “Lite”. These are the lightest weight bags
available and are meant for those activities when extreme compressibility
and weight are an issue.
reverSe differential Hood
our hoods are cut so that the inside of the hood is made with a larger
piece of fabric than the outside. This creates a hood with loose down filled
fabric which surrounds your head. That way you can enjoy warm insulation
around your head and face without having to cinch the hood tight. also,
the extra fabric can be adjusted to create a down filled ruff or bill across
your forehead..
differential cut
Mummy bags are made with an inner shell fabric cut narrower than the
outer shell. This is called differential. its purpose is to give the inner shell
a smaller circumference than the outer shell. This eliminates extra fabric
inside the bag that could lead to cold spots. Most of our mummy bags are
differentially cut to promote proper lofting and to protect against down
compression when knees or elbows push against the inner fabric. Semi
rectangular bags are not cut this way so that they can be unzipped to
lay flat.
continuouS BaffleS
a 3-season bag needs to serve in a wide range of temperatures. You will
expect it to provide comfort during the heat of summer through the cooler
temperatures of fall or early spring. To ensure a broad temperature range
we build our 2 and 3-season bags with continuous baffles which encircle
the bag from zipper to zipper. This allows you to shift the down insulation
from one side of the bag to the other. during hot summer nights, you
could shift the down from the top of the bag to the bottom so there is
less insulation on top of you. When the weather is cold, you can move the
with your hands from one side to the other. This adjustment allows you to
maintain a comfortable temperature inside your bag. We sew continuous
baffle bags with 5 ¼” baffle spacing so that unintended down migration
during the night is kept to a minimum.
paSSive top collar
Heat Loss from the neck area is common while moving inside your bag
at night. To help minimize this heat loss, our Megalites are outfitted with
a passive Top Collar. This amply filled 3-dimensional collar extends from the
zipper across the neck to seal over your shoulders and keep warm air from
escaping.
full doWn collar
When a full seal from the elements is called for, we pull no punches. our
full down Collar is a 3-dimensionally sewn down filled tube that wraps
snugly about your neck. it is sewn with two widely spaced seams so that
it is a solid baffle of down, and not just some sort of flap. it uses a elastic
draw cord to cinch it tight and in our Gore Windstopper bags the entire
collar is made of Gore Windstopper fabric. You’ll find the full down
collar on all of our Gore Windstopper bags and other bags where heat
retention is critical.
Side Block BaffleS
in cold weather you want insulation to stay on top of you without any
chance of shifting. This task is accomplished with a side block baffle made
with netting, that runs the length of a bag on the side opposite the zipper.
our winter bags are built with a V-block Side baffle. This V-block design
does two things, it provides a wide pie shaped chamber of down along the
right and left sides of the bag, and by increasing the number of down filled
chambers in a bag, the size of the chambers decrease. Smaller chambers
provide better down control. further, the shorter baffles that cross your
chest lie flat so that down can’t migrate to either side.

Stuff SackS and Storage BagS
all of our sleeping bags come with a stuff sack and a storage bag.
The stuff sack is made with a waterproof urethane coated material and
has a built-in handle sewn into the bottom. When stuffing, always push
your sleeping bag to the very bottom of the sack. You may find that our
Gore Windstopper bags will stuff easier if they are turned inside out.
use the stuff sack only when transporting your bag. our storage bag
is a large volume bag that allows your sleeping bag to be stored fully
lofted. This allows the down to breathe and stay lofty. Your sleeping
bag should always be stored in this large bag. This is an important way
to protect your investment and to prolong the life of your sleeping bag.
attention to detailS
added together, it’s all these little details that make a great sleeping
bag and push Western Mountaineering over the top! for instance, all of
our winter bags with the full down Collar are made with interlocking
double draft Tubes. When the bag is zipped these large stoutly filled
tubes rest side by side rather than on top of each other. That way these
interlocking draft Tubes retain their full loft without being compressed
as the zipper closes. When a bag has a single draft tube it will hang
from the top so that the zipper won’t inadvertently be exposed while
moving inside the bag. a dacron stiffening tape is sewn alongside each
zipper to prevent snags. our Hook and Loop closures are backed with
fabric to prevent fraying and are placed on non-integral parts of the
bag like the draw cord casing.
HoW to uSe teMperature ratingS
Judging a sleeping bag’s temperature value by looking only at its
temperature rating is strongly discouraged. Temperature ratings are
nothing more than a rough guide and should only be used as a starting
point. Standards for testing a sleeping bag’s temperature rating do exist
in europe but the uSa has not adopted this system so far. We advise
you as consumers to do research and consider other factors beyond
the temperature rating claimed on a hangtag whether the claim is
from the manufacturer of the product or from a certified test facility.
The ratings we claim for our sleeping bags have always been, in our
evaluation, somewhat conservative. all of our ongoing feedback from
consumers, gear testers, and from our own experiences suggests that
our ratings are both safe and accurate. The current en13537 standard
method provides a “comfort”, a “limit” and an “extreme” rating for
each sleeping bag tested. The ratings we have given our sleeping bags
indicates the lower limit that we designed the bag to be used at. in
fact, it may be possible to safely use the bag at temperatures below
the rating if careful attention is given to all other factors wich impact
body warmth in order to maximize the performance potential of your
deSign feature icon key
We have created a series of icons that represent features found on
Western Mountaineering sleeping bags. at a glance you will be able
These icons appear throughout the catalog for each sleeping bag.
sleeping bag. These factors include the density, design and quality of ground
pad used, surface conditions, weather, clothing choice, moisture management,
tent design & ventilation, and position of the bag throughout the night.
To choose the bag best for your temperature needs start with its
temperature rating, then look at the loft of the bag. The more loft a bag has
the warmer it will be. next, look at the bag’s Girth. This will give you an idea
of a bags internal volume. a bag with a large internal volume will take longer
to heat up and will be subject to more convective heat loss when air moves
in and out of the bag as you move inside. This is called the bellows effect.
narrow bags or bags with a small internal volume are warmer. also look
at the fill Weight of the bag. This will not only show how much down the
manufacturer puts into a given bag, but could reveal the density of the down
inside the chambers and the fill power of the down being used. and keep
in mind that if two bags have the same internal volume, the bag with more
loft will be warmer. if two bags have the same loft, the bag with the smaller
internal volume will be more efficient and warmer. if two bags have the same
loft and internal volume, but one has a lot more down fill by weight, then
check the density of down inside the chambers and the fill power claimed by
the manufacturer. Well filled down chambers provide better down control.
Since our beginning, Western
Mountaineering has always felt that
high fill power goose down is the best
insulation material available. This natural
fiber, while highly variable in nature,
provides more warmth per ounce than any
other material. down’s unique structure
is responsible for its tremendous ability
to trap warm air. its filaments are divided
and sub-divided to reach out into its
surroundings and create a dead air space that slows the movement of warm
air. by its very nature, a down filled sleeping bag is as much as 35% lighter
than its synthetic counterparts. it is more compressible than synthetic
insulations and provides the most warmth with the least bulk. down also
is known to have the greatest longevity, and it will outlast any other
insulation by 3 to 5 times, making it the most economical choice after its
initial investment. down sleeping bags drape luxuriously over the body and
ensure good coverage and warm contact. There is nothing else like down.
To perform a certified test, a sample of down is sent to an
independent laboratory. There the sample is placed
in a large screened box and allowed to condition
for 5 days before being tested. during this time
the sample is stirred, mixed, and blown with a
warm hair dryer. This conditioning is intended to
stabilize the sample so that consistent results may
be obtained. Then a 1 ounce sample is drawn and
placed into a measuring cylinder. a piston weighted
to 68.4 grams is placed on top of the down and
when it comes to rest the volume of the down
is measured in cubic inches. in spite of 5 days of
conditioning, the laboratory will publish their
results with a plus or minus 5% error. This is a full
10% range and for an 850 fill test, results in an 80
point variance! furthermore, conditioning actually
improves the sample by drying and blowing out
dust and other small particles while the down at
the factory remains unconditioned! This is what
we mean by an optimistic fill power rather than a
practical fill power rating.
850 pluS fill poWer gooSe doWn
Western Mountaineering uses the highest lofting premium goose down
available for all of our sleeping bags. our fill power claim of 850 plus is
meant to be a realistic estimate given the variability of the product and the
nature of fill power test methods. in reality, our certified tests most often
are higher than what we claim. This is because the certified test methods
provide the most optimistic fill power rating and do not represent what is
being put into your sleeping bag. Recently, these testing methods for fill
power changed again making the fill power ratings even higher. now, each
sample of down will receive a steam treatment and tumble dry before it is
given several days to loft up in a perfectly controlled environment. during
that time the down is enhanced by using a blow dryer to boost loft. Your
sleeping bag will never receive that kind of treatment, and this is why we
claim a more practical fill power. Rest assured, we use only the finest goose
down available.
faBricS
We use three main fabrics in our line of sleeping bags. You will find our
extremelite series bags made with a very lightweight ripstop nylon. our
Microfiber series bags are made with an exclusive material called Microlite
xp. and for extreme conditions, we have our Gore Windstopper series
bags which are constructed of a laminated fabric for maximum water
resistance. This material was formerly known as “dryloft”, which we
have been using successfully for many years now. More details on these
fabrics can be found in the pages describing each product series.
ykk ZipperS
We use a #5 YKK coil zipper with locking sliders. The top sliders (at
the hood or top of the bag) feature two pulls for convenient access from
inside or outside of the sleeping bag. The bottom slider (at the foot of
the bag) improves the comfort range by allowing for easy ventilation. The
coil construction has a less abrasive surface in the event of zipper snags and
provides years of trouble free operation.
WeStern Mountaineering
Baffle Material
pre-cut no-see-um netting is what we use for all internal baffles. This
material is firm to prevent distortion, but flexible enough to insure
compressibility. it is extremely lightweight and durable.
Water repellent treatMentS
all of our fabrics are finished with a dWR, (durable Water Repellent)
that is rated as 80/20. This is an industry measure of durability that suggests
that 80% dWR is retained after 20 washings. in reality this rating is for
laboratory test procedure only and is not realistic for home washing.
aBraSion reSiStant taffeta
We use a more durable fabric at the foot sections of our two expedition
Windstopper bags. This material is woven with heavier yarns so the inside
of your bag is protected when you store gear or boot liners at the foot of
your bag.
our search never ends for the lightest
weight down proof fabrics to feature in
our extremeLite bags. for these bags
we have worked with suppliers to develop
extremely high thread count fabrics with ultra
lightweight yarns not seen in the sleeping bag
market before. These fabrics are constructed
from yarns that are 20 denier or finer with up
to a 380 thread count. These materials weigh
less than 1.0 oz. per square yard, and allow us
to offer you the lightest weight down products
available. our extremeLite series features 7
specialty bags that range from 15 ounces to
2 pounds total weight! These compressible
bags are designed for special applications
where volume and weight are critical factors.
although some durability is sacrificed with
these lighter fabrics, our extremeLite bags
are sewn-thru, the vertical seams are baffled to allow unimpeded loft
MICROLITE XP
Microfiber is a specific type of fabric constructed of densly woven ultra fine yarns in order to achieve an optimal balance of breathability
and water resistance. each micofiber yarn has many more filaments than a normal nylon or polyester yarn of equivalent size. Woven into
high thread count material, it becomes a fabric that really keeps wind and water out. although treated with a durable water repellent
(“dWR”) finish, this fabric remains highly breathable becuase there is no coating or laminate to restrict vapor transfer. Since the fabric’s
construction is responsible for its weather resistance, it cannot wear off, wash out or delaminate. This is the most technologically advanced
non-laminated weather resistant fabric available. We have carefully sourced our Microlite xp microfiber because of its very low weight
(less than 1.3 ounce per square yard), durability and ability to perform well in a wide variety of weather conditions.
A ski tour across the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness is no easy affair. It is cold and remote and trying to cross the continental divide may just be impossible. But the Big Sky state
can offer you magnificent views of the northern lights as long as you’re willing to crawl from the warmth of your Puma Windstopper. This winter bag sports 9” of massive loft
to keep you thermally content all night long, even if the temperature drops to -25° F. The two Interlocking Draft Tubes are amply filled with down and are constructed entirely
of Windstopper fabric to ensure weatherproofness. A 3-Dimensional down filled collar which surrounds your neck is also made with Windstopper fabric to protect the
insulation from your frosty breath throughout the night. The hood is large enough to fill around your face and provide a ruff for your forehead. Its Windstopper shell provides
all the weather protection you need in a snow cave or single wall tent. The inside fabric of the foot section is made with 2.4 oz. taffeta for added protection when gear is stored
there. This bag is available in a 5’6” length, but you may want to size it larger so you can fit gear at the foot!
Denali, Aconcagua, Himalaya...mountaineering in its extreme sense. These are places where mistakes cannot be made and so the Bison is most often chosen to serve.
Windstopper fabric makes this bag impervious to the elements while remaining lightweight and very compressible. Crammed with 42 ounces of 850+ fill power down, this
bag has 10 abundant inches of heat trapping loft. Huge V-Block Side Baffles and horizontal baffles across your chest keep the down fill in place. Double Interlocking Draft
Tubes, along with a down filled Windstopper collar seal in heat and provide security while howling winds surround your tent. The massive hood is not only well filled but is
completely made with Windstopper fabric and has a large integral hood ruff to seal your face from the elements. The Bison is the crowning glory of Western Mountaineering
and demonstrates our commitment to innovation and quality. This life saving bundle weighs in at a scant 4 lb. 10 oz.
Our Hot Sac vapor barrier liner is your most important companion for those technical winter trips. A VBL works by stopping heat loss from evaporative cooling. A VBL will also
prevent your body vapor from degrading your insulation. This is most important during extended stays inside your bag. By using an exclusive new material, our Hot Sac
VBL goes one step further by stopping radiant heat loss with its reflective metal coating. An elastic draw cord at the top of the Hot Sac cinches about your neck to prevent
convective heat loss. The Hot Sac weighs only 4.5 ounces and is light enough to carry on day trips as an emergency bivy. Color may vary according to fabric availability.

Our quest to find the perfect balance of warmth, weight, and performance has resulted in a garment that has earned a spot on many gear lists, the Flash jacket. We designed this jacket to
provide sufficient warmth for the less extreme climate ranges with the least amount of weight. The shell fabric is a tightly woven material that weighs only 0.9 oz. per square yard! There are no
cordlocks on this garment because we have finished the hood and waist with lightweight elastic piping to seal out the cold. The pockets are insulated with down on both sides, and the full zipper
has insulated draft protection. This jacket is both comfortable and functional. It is extremely lightweight and has just enough warmth, yet its not too bulky.
Looking for a lightweight down jacket with a little more water resistance? Our Flash XR series jackets may be the perfect solution. We have added zippered closures to the pockets, a hood
adjustment strap, and used an exclusive new lightweight laminated shell fabric which provides an added measure of protection against moisture. The average weight of these jackets is only 11
ounces, yet it has a breathable water resistant shell fabric for better performance and a bit more durability. Zippered pockets have insulation on both sides and protective covers to keep water
out when the pockets are closed. A small strap conveniently located behind the hood allows for easy fit adjustment and brings it closer to your head so that it won’t block your line of sight
Keeping your feet warm plays an important role in maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the rest of your body. Cold weather camping can be fun if you are warm, but
it can also be a miserable experience for those who are unprepared. One of the best ways to maintain comfort in cold weather is to insure that your feet always stay warm and dry.
Our lightweight compressible down booties will provide all the warmth and comfort to keep you smiling long after the temperatures drop. Down booties are made for the outdoors,
but they are also perfect for anyone with poor circulation or cold feet and it is not surprising that many people wear them at home.
Our new Flash Down Booties weigh an average of 3oz (85g) per pair in the Medium size. The ¼” foam insole provides just enough warmth and support beneath your feet while the
12Denier ripstop nylon shell allows the down to reach its maximum loft potential. A simple elastic draw closure above the ankle keeps the cold air outside while your feet stay cozy
and warm. At just 1 ½ oz (42g) per foot these booties must be packed away or on your feet because they are light enough to blow away on a windy day if you leave them out.
claSSic BootieS
Our Classic booties are made in USA with high fill power European goose down inside a tightly woven nylon outer shell fabric. The nylon shell is treated with a DWR to protect
the insulation from external moisture and the rand is made of a durable coated nylon fabric. An elastic heel band positioned inside the booties helps lock in the heat and provide
lateral stability for walking. The bottom of the booties feature a non-slip Toughtek material to keep you from slipping.
expedition gWS BootieS
Our Expedition booties add an extra measure of protection against the elements for more severe winter conditions. The Gore
Windstopper fabric extends well above the insulation providing full-gaiter protection against the elements. Other features
like the additional foam insulation in the heel make this bootie a perfect choice for winter camping or expeditions.

care and Storage
care and Storage of your doWn Sleeping Bag
proper care and storage of your Western Mountaineering® sleeping bag will
provide you with years of service. Your bag should always be placed on a waterproof
ground cloth to keep dirt and other forest litter from soiling the outside shell. You can
protect the inside of the bag from sweat and body oils by wearing a tee shirt, shorts
and socks. This will do the same as sheets on a bed.
When you store your bag put it into a large breathable storage sack. do not leave it
stuffed in its stuff sack or in a plastic bag for long periods of time. air dry your bag in
the sun or in a tumble dryer before storing it.
at some point you’ll need to clean your bag. don’t let this frighten you! The
best way is to hand wash it in a bath tub or you can use a front loading washing
machine. never use a top loading or agitator machine as this can damage the baffle
construction. only use a soap especially prepared for down products. dry cleaning is
not recommended since the solvents can strip away natural oils contained in the down.
When you hand wash, fill the tub with warm water, add down soap and put the
bag in the tub. a tip here is to keep your bag in its stuff sack and put the whole thing
underwater. That way air has already been forced out of the bag and you won’t have
to fight air filled baffles floating to the surface. a Windstopper bag should first be
turned inside out before being put into the tub. Carefully pull the bag from its stuff
sack and gently knead the soapy water through the bag.
it may be necessary to change the soapy water more than once, but don’t over do it.
When you are satisfied that your bag is clean be prepared to rinse it with clear water
several times. it is important that all of the soap is removed from the down before
it is dried. if in doubt rinse again; three or more rinses are not uncommon. do not
wring water from your sleeping bag, instead roll it up tightly and carefully. a washing
machine that will allow you to select the last spin cycle will remove a lot of water and
save dryer time. find a large dryer with good heat control, and set to low heat. be sure
there are no nicks, burrs, or other sharp items inside the dryer that may damage the
shell fabric on your bag. feel around inside the dryer with your hand to be certain.
once you begin drying, watch for hot spots on the dryer drum that could melt the
nylon shell. if in doubt use the no heat setting. a couple of clean tennis balls tossed in
with the bag will help break up clumps of down and give you something to look at. be
careful! don’t just tumble your bag till it feels dry, that may not be enough. Carefully
feel the down insulation. if you still feel lumps, no matter how small, then your down
is still wet! break a twenty and add more quarters. it may take two or more hours
depending on your bag, but you will have a clean sleeping bag back to its original loft.
Maintenance of doWn leakage
by its very nature, the shell fabric of a sleeping bag is porous. This is what allows
the fabric to be breathable and as a result, it is possible for the small spines of feathers
and down clusters to work their way through the fabric. it is important to realize that
the fabric is not torn, but that the spines are passing in between the threads. The best
maintenance in this situation is to reach behind the fabric and pull the offending down
cluster baCK inTo its down chamber. The small space between the threads will close
and reposition themselves. You may also gently massage the area to promote this “self
sealing”. do noT attempt to pull the cluster ouT of THe baG! Two things will happen
if you do, 1) that cluster will be tangled with another cluster and it too will follow
out of the bag in an endless fountain of down, and 2) the space between the threads
will become larger and take longer to reseal. Theoretically, our extremeLite fabrics
might tend to leak more than our other shell fabrics because of the lightweight nature
of its construction. Rest assured that the fabrics we use are down proof and have the
tightest weaves and the highest available thread counts and that performance is in no
way compromised.
relofting tip
Relofting your down sleeping bag before a trip is a good idea and can easily be
done at home. place your bag in a tumble dryer and set it to low heat. This will allow
the down clusters to open fully. always check the inside of your dryer for hot spots
that can melt the nylon shell.
WHat iS doWn control?
insulative down and its dead air space is responsible for the warmth of a sleeping
bag. The distribution of down throughout the bag must be controlled to keep it in
place and to prevent unwanted movement. down control is achieved two ways, first,
down is confined to walled baffles made up of the outside and inside shell fabrics and
the no-see-um netting stitched to them. These baffle walls contain the down to limit
shifting within a contained area. if baffles are too large, down can move around across
a larger space. Smaller baffles keep the down within a smaller area. The second way to
achieve down control is to fill the baffles dense enough so that the friction within the
baffle prevents movement. Sufficient density can be seen when the shell fabric firmly
bulges between baffle seams.
Water ManageMent
The fear of a wet bag is the most cited reason for people to avoid down. This is a
mistake. any bag that is wet is miserable to sleep in and that is why it’s so important
to keep your gear dry. You’ll find it’s a skill easier to learn than map reading. Consider
all the avenues available to keep your bag dry, like tents, bivys, and proper camp
placement. Then consider the number of times your sleeping bag has gotten wet to
the extent that it could not be used. Catastrophic wetting is extremely rare and is an
indicator of other problems. You may find that you have indeed mastered the skill of
staying dry. all shell fabrics used by Western Mountaineering are treated with a surface
durable Water Repellent finish (dWR) with an 80/20 rating. This is more than sufficient
to shrug off dew and condensation. and, dWR’s can be easily reapplied as time wears
them thin.
