Hi all,
Season Half Way Point Reached
I trust you all had a great Christmas and have welcomed
in the New Year enjoying good health.
Well we are a bit over halfway through our patrolling
season and it certainly has been a pretty mixed
patrol season weather
wise, I don’t think we’ve
seen the lagoon running
out so often for some
time.
Stuart Wye
Club President
after heavy rains.
A point of interest, the
formation of the Club
back in 1921 was a direct
result of a young boy
being washed out to sea
when the lagoon “broke”
Despite the somewhat ordinary conditions I congratulate
all those patrolling members, some 150 plus
for their efforts to date. I would however, implore all
patrolling members to honour their responsibilities
and commitments and continue to turn up for your
rostered patrols.
Congratulations are also extended to all our new
SRC and Bronze Medallion recipients. Well done on
gaining your awards and a “big” thank you to all the
trainers for putting in all those hours of work instructing
these members to help them achieve these
awards.
To our competitors, I wish you all well as we ramp
up into the busy carnival period and also for the
Championship period that will follow – wear our
colours proudly and compete to your best.
Last month I passed on a big thank you to Louis
Tassone and everyone involved with the 3 Points
Challenge – a resounding success.
Another great fund raising success recently, was
our Annual Golf Day which despite being short on the
optimum number of players, was hugely successful.
The day was held over the Christmas break and the
organising group headed up by Chris Stoneman did a
magnificent job. It was great to see the “older” Life
Members pitching in once again to cook the BBQ and
young Bill Watson helping his dad Robert run the
horse racing game. Jim Geoghegan also did well
deputising at the 11th hour as the fine master- raising
over $500 in fines. To all who participated and/
or helped – thanks again.
As mentioned a couple of months back another great
area where members can help support the Club is
by coming down to the Club on a Friday and/or
Sunday evening and enjoying the friendly environment,
fine fare and cool drinks that are available at
our social functions.
Thanks for your support. .
Surf Life Saving Carnival Season In Full Swing
Now that the festive season is behind us, the Surf Life Saving Surf Sports
season kicks into full swing, for both Nippers and Seniors. And thus far
there have been some promising signs on all fronts for some good results as
we work our way to the pointy end of the season, with Branch, State and
Australian Championships not too far away.
In the first Saturday of the new year saw our Seniors drive to the end of the
peninsula with Palm Beach hosting an Open and Masters carnival. We had
some great results including a victory in the Open Board Rescue, with Adam
“Tiny” Atkins teaming up with Glenn “Yogi” Coltman, and a victory for Claudia
Forsyth in the U19 Women’s Board Race.
The following week our Nippers headed to Narrabeen to do battle, and were
met with some very testing conditions. A growing swell hitting a sand bank
exposed by the low tide tested competitors and officials, and after a short
delay it was decided that the U9 and U10 water area would not proceed, and
a cut down program with no board events was left for the rest of the older
kids to work through.
Before this happened, Kristie Leonard took out the U14 Iron Person, showing
why she was an Interbranch rep this year. Olivia Heaton was rewarded for
some recent hard training, when she took out the U12 Surf Swim, which with
the help of Claudia Harris, who came 4th and her other well placed team
mates, gave North Curly 1st place in the Surf Teams. Olivia also took out 2nd
in the Iron Person, making it a very successful carnival for her. In the U12's,
Kelly Allsop was victorious in the Iron Person, and also came 2nd in the Surf
Swim, which helped our girls get 3rd in the Surf Teams.
On the beach, Sophie McGovern continued her unbeaten run of over 3 years
at Branch carnivals, talking out the U13 Beach Sprint, Beach Flags, and also
anchoring the girls Beach Relay to victory. And she was part of the All Age
Beach Relay team which came 2nd in the premier event, the best position for
the club in some time.
The next carnivals on the calendar were the Manly and the Australia Day
Freshwater Open Carnivals. There were lean pickings at Manly, but we saw
the return of the North Curl Curl march past team make an appearance
after a long break from the arena.
At Freshwater, our younger competitors highlighted how much talent we
have feeding into the senior ranks, with some outstanding performances.
Our U13 Girls were all conquering on the beach track, with North Curl Curl
placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the U13 Girls Beach Sprint. Sophie McGovern,
Elise Glanville, Isabel Andia and Caity McGovern then backed up to take out
their beach relay, which was no spurise given their individual result. Sophie,
Caity and Elise then teamed up with Kaitlin Glanville to take out the U14 girls
Board and Ski Coach Noel Langthorn celebrates the Open Board Rescue
win at the first carnival of the year at Palm Beach
beach relay, whilst Kaitlin went up an age group for a hit out at the longer
sprint track, and won the U15 Girls beach sprint.
Sophie capped of her day by taking out the U13 Girls Flags—no surprise given
she is unbeaten at Branch carnivals in both the sprint and flags discipline for
the past 3 years.
In the water, again it was our younger competitors getting the glory, with
Isaac Smith taking out the U13 Iron Man and coming 2nd in the U13 Swim.
Isaac has shown some great form this year, and looks to be developing into
a great competitor under the guidance of the senior members of the Board
and Ski team.
In the Opens, Tom Atkins, Jake Atkins and Glenn Coltman combined to get 4th
in the Board Relay, whilst Glenn combined with Zac Auton to come 2nd in the
Board Rescue.
Overall North Curl Curl came 7th in the carnival, which is the best result the
club has had for some time.
With the Branch Championships fast approaching, it all augers well for some
good results.

Talk About Sharks on the Increase
An increase in the number of news items involving sharks, whether it be sightings or attacks
on humans, seems to be rife at the moment., and is always a hot topic of discussion, especially
given our love for the water.
In our local Manly Daily recently, there was a story regarding the need to start monitoring the
migration of bait fish from the air. Sharks are not uncommon in our waters, and most of the
time, they are going to swim right by our beaches without wanting to even come near us in
the water. But if a shark is in the process of feeding, the theory is that given the bait fish is the prime food source for sharks, if you are aware of where the
bait fish are, you stand a good chance of guessing where the sharks will be going to feed, and that information can help life savers better monitor the
beaches.
The most recent shark sighting at our beach happened on the Monday New Years Holiday this year, when what is believed to have been a shark was sighted
by our life guard. Not wanting to take any risks before confirming the sighting, the shark alarm was sounded and our patrols swung into action, clearing
the water of all swimmers, and taking to the water in the IRB to check for any unwanted visitors. After a number of runs up and down the surf break, the all
clear was given, and the swimmers made their way back into the water, al be it a little more wary of what might be swimming with them .
To all Members and Services,
On behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia, we would like
to congratulate every member and service for the
outstanding commitment that you have under taken
over the extended holiday period.
With an increase in patrol hours and more public holidays,
dedication to the public and the beach was of
the highest quality. Services continue to go above and
beyond the red and yellow flags by lending assistance
to those outside of areas of direct supervision and
regular service hours and also to engage in important
preventative actions including education about how
to enjoy our wonderful beaches safely.
Once again to all Members, Clubs and Operations
Support Services, congratulations and thank you for
your untiring support to the bathing public and for
upholding our Association’s motto:
Marching at the Freshwater Australia Day Carnival
Golf Day Run and Won
The Club held its Annual Golf Day on 27th December at
Mona Vale Golf Club.
Whilst Numbers were a little down on previous years
we were blessed with good and challenging conditions
for all players on the Course and back at the Clubhouse.
The winners on the day were the group of Clinton Hall,
Matt Smith, Glenn Coltman and Daniel Goodsell. Pumpkin’s
Group were declared winners after being subject
to a recount and an intensive audit process. Many
would suggest that their scoring may be better than
their golf but they remained solid during the intensive
interrogation process.
With the Golf and prize giving out of the way, we all
settled back to enjoy the festivities back at our wonderful
Clubhouse.
Many thank to Keith Stoneman, Abbie Hudson, Frank
Lowe and Kevin Martin who stepped up again to cook of
the BBQ. Great to have our older members cooking as
they do make the steaks nice and tender – if they can
get their choppers through them they must be like
butter for those of us with all our teeth. Great work
and thanks, you win the right to wear the aprons next
year !!
Thanks to Jimmy Gagen who stepped up and did the
fines. After his performance in the “scoring of the
card test” held earlier in the proceedings he probably
thought it was cheaper doing the fines than being on
the other end and paying them. Jimmy’s company also
donated the water on the day. Hopefully next year he
starts work with Lion Nathan.
Billy Watson and Jono Wye did a great job on the raffle
– problem was Billy did not win this year, he must
have actually shuffled the tickets this year. In the bar
Club President Stuart did a great job, not only in sam-
pling the beer but actually serving some to the
guests !!
Our little wooden horses again raised over $1,000 and
it was well run by the Robert and Billy Watson. They
combined well as Race Caller and Jockey and run the
game like clockwork, thanks Guys.
Thank you again to all our sponsors, most of whom
seem to front up for everything -
Conexus (Dave Murray)
Porter Painting (Russell Porter)
CBRE Commercial (Andrew Callaghan)
Vivid Property Services (Scott Agnew)
Ken Sparks Carpets (Ken Sparks)
Cleanop (Steve Hagon) - and
Built (Stuart Wye) who stepped up and sponsored
2 holes, fantastic and thanks again.
Next year will be bigger and better just need to spread
the word as it is a great way to raise money and have
a great day out. Good golf, good food, good company,
a good cause and this year we also had a later afternoon
barber shop on the balcony – that was not so
good !!
Finally thank you to my fellow organising committee
member Russell Porter and Steve Cargill. Thanks also
to Jamie Duff and Noel Langthorne, and all others who
helped out on the day.
Return of North Curly March Past
After a 5 year absence, the proud tradition of the North Curl Curl March Past team has once
again returned to the competition arena. With a number of newcomers to the art of march
past joining a core group of past members, under the guidance of Jamie Duff, they made
their return at the Manly Open Carnival, and were welcomed back by many of the other
teams that were happy to see the green and gold team back in their ranks.
For back row member and club president, Stuart Wye, the return march was a special event
as it was his birthday. And as the teams stood at ease in front of the Manly crowd, he was
called out to the front o the march past teams and wished a happy birthday by the whole
beach, including a rendition of Happy Birthday from the pipe band, and a cheer from the
whole beach. Definitely a birthday Stuart will not forget—and great to see our flag and
march past team re-joining the ranks at carnivals once again.

Memory of A
Lost Member
Robert Cahill was an early member of our Surf Club,
who died as a prisoner of war in World War II.
His niece Pam Durban (nee Hunter) still lives in Dee Why
and her Granddaughters have been members of Manly
Surf Life saving club.
The attached letter of condolence was sent to Mrs Cahill
by the then president of North Curl Curl Surf Life Saving
Club, Roy Todd.
The hand written letter was found recently by Robyn
Dwight (nee Durban) who was researching her family
history. Also found was original death notification received
by the Cahill family.
