A busy World
Congress
During WSAVA/FECAVA/BSAVA World
Congress, the WSAVA’s Executive Board and
its key committees met to drive forward
initiatives in areas including: the development
of global CE programmes; the creation of tools to
enable common approaches and standards of care;
and promoting the importance of veterinary medicine
within the global matrix of One Health. More news will
follow in future issues.
Prior to Congress, incoming WSAVA President,
Dr Peter Ihrke, Professor of Dermatology at the
University of California School of Veterinary Medicine,
commented: “The global ‘connectivity’ offered by
the WSAVA gives us a great base from which to
improve companion care around the world. We’re
looking forward to meeting our global colleagues at
World Congress and continuing our important work to
drive the profession forward and to strengthen the
human/animal bond.”
An umbrella organisation focused on enhancing the
clinical care of companion animals around the world,
the WSAVA represents 180,000 veterinarians globally
through 92 member associations, including the BSAVA.
It is expanding rapidly, having welcomed 13 new
member associations during 2011. These included The
American Veterinary Medical Association, The
Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, The Society
of Japanese Companion Animal Practitioners and The
Japanese Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The
additional new members combined to double the
number of companion animal veterinary surgeons
represented by WSAVA globally last year and the total
is likely to rise still further during 2012 as other
organisations are in discussions about joining. n
