Homemade Sidewalk Paint
Materials:
•
•
•
•
¼ cup corn starch
¼ cup water
This Homemade Sidewalk Paint is
so easy to make and is eco-friendly
too! You can make it in different
colours and it wipes right off
with water!
8 drops of food colouring in different colours
Small containers (one for each colour)
• Paint brush(es)
Instructions:
1. In a small container mix the cornstarch and water.
Add food colouring. Repeat to make as many
colours as you can. If you want white paint don't
add any food colouring! You'll notice when you paint
it looks a little watery, but when it dries the colours
will be vibrant.
2. If you are using this paint outside on a warm sunny
day it will dry almost immediately. Hose it off, or just
use a wet rag. Since this paint is made with natural
ingredients it will not harm your plants, grass or any
of your outdoor drains. Happy Painting!
June / July 2012

What’s happening @ your library during June & July?
BOOk REvIEWS
With the Darwin Cup Carnival coming up in July, this
provides a great opportunity to review a new bestseller
from our selection of equestrian books.
Gamble
by Felix Francis
Writing solo for the first time,
Felix Francis continues his father's
bestselling legacy with another edgeof-your-seat
read. Nicholas Foxton, a
former jockey who suffered a careerending
injury, is out for a day at the
Grand National races when his friend
and co-worker Herb Kovak is shot at point blank range.
With the press speculating links to gangland crime and a
crumpled note containing a threatening message found
in the dead man’s coat, Nick begins to doubt how well he
really knew his friend.
This is definitely in the mould of a typical Dick Francis
book. While he doesn't quite have the exact flavour of
writing as his father, Felix Francis is nevertheless filling
his father's shoes quite nicely.
This one is a book club favourite – put it on your list.
The Other Hand
by Chris Cleave
For people who like to be swept
away with a book from the very
first sentence this book is a must.
It is very hard to put down and
very relevant to the issues of today.
A refugee girl fleeing Nigeria from
the most vile experiences and an English woman share
a past. The reader is given hints at first that the
experience was brief but clearly seared in the memories
of both women. The unravelling is done slowly and
the story is told by both women. You cannot help but
be moved by both of them. This story gives a real
insight into the plight of the refugee and a glimpse into
detention within Britain.
Beautifully written with a great balance between detail
and leading the reader on to find out the truth behind
different events. An extremely moving story which will
stay with the reader for a long time.
Little Possums Play House is a Child Care Centre for
18 months to 5 years of age. In 2012 we will also operate
Pandanus Infant Centre for children 3 to 18 months. It has
been inspired by a range of philosophies including Rudolf
Steiner and Maria Montessori providing an environment
which gives children the opportunity to imagine, create,
explore and learn through structured and unstructured play.
We focus on four key themes: rhythm, repetition, security
and continuity that are very important in the daily life of
a child. Rhythm and repetition help children feel safe and
familiar. Children feel secure in knowing what is coming next.
Our staff come from a wide range of backgrounds and
age from 18 to over 60. All staff are either qualified or
in training and have a strong personal commitment to our
children. You are always welcome to drop in and have a look
or just stay a while and enjoy the company.
Parenting advice... Travelling with Children
Josephine Downs is a specialist when it comes to children's counselling. practising play Therapy since 2004 and working
successfully with many children, adolescents and parents in that time. Josephine's qualifications include A Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology (APS approved) and Sociology, two advanced Diploma's, one in Family Therapy and one in Counselling. Josephine will be
one of the first to undertake a masters in Play Therapy in Australia, when the course begins in approx 2013.
Josephine is the current President of the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association and is a member of APT (American Play Therapy
Association), VAFT (Victorian Association for Family Therapy) and the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors.
Josephine's life experience includes having two of her own children 4.5 and 2 years, a foster carer and a residential youth worker for
children in departmental care and having worked in child protection for many years.
IT is the middle of the year and the dry season does
come about so fast. It's a great time of year to go away
on a family holiday but can also be a daunting time of
year for parents as children are on school break for a
lengthy period of time.
Generally my articles are about how to manage the
holiday season while being in Darwin, however, a great
question has been put to me about taking children away
on holiday’s - national or international. how young is too
young?
Many Darwinite’s take their children interstate often
to visit family, however, the idea of a family holiday
somewhere else is a great experience for every one.
Family holidays for children can start from a very young
age. Of course young babies and toddlers are not
essentially going to remember these but that does not
mean it's not worth taking the time out and experiencing
something different. Clearly it's important for your
children to see a different side of life and to be supported
in that with you as parents.
Something's to note: Children aren't necessarily going
to want to change out of their general routines to
accommodate your holiday. Young children thrive on
routine so if you’re going to a place where there is a time
zone change try and keep to a manageable routine. It
may mean that in accordance to where you are your
children are up really late, wake really early and go to
bed really early.
If it’s just yourself and your partner going on holiday,
with the children at home under arranged care, keep in
mind that you’re still going to need to manage sleep,
meals and night bedtimes for your children to eliminate
further disruptions.
In saying this there are many places where you can
go on holidays where they have 'kid’s clubs' and very
inexpensive nannies. Some people prefer not to use
these services as they want their children to be with
them, however, there are options. A good tip is for
parents to also have that midday nap so that you can all
Contact: Josephine Downs
www.playtherapy.com.au
The Top Ender Tri-Services Magazine Incorporated
stay up that bit later.
Clearly one child in a pram sleeping is very easy to
manage but once they get to that 3 to 5 age range
keeping them occupied can be a challenge. Ensure you
have entertainment options to assist when you are in a
restaurant or on a bus ride to a tourist spot etc. Some
of the helpful gadgets for young children include sticker
books, colouring in books, personal DVD, iPad - where
there are short movies or TV shows. These are also great
tools to take away for consequences if need be.
Once you get up to two or more children the challenge
can be greater but with good preparation and research
it's manageable. I can highlight that myself and my
husband have two children under two and have travelled
internationally a number of times with them and they
appear to enjoy it. International and national travel can
be daunting but it can also be very pleasurable.
No matter if it's national or international family holidays
are what create good and long lasting memories for
children. Starting them young gets them to understand
and enjoy the different things the world has to offer.
Enjoy and happy holidays.
'Mobile Defence families often struggle
red nose Day, held annually on the last Friday in
June, is the major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids.
Funds raised through red nose Day activities
assist in providing vital services and programs.
about SiDS and Kids
SIDS and Kids is an international leader in the field of
health promotion, dedicated to the elimination of sudden
and unexpected infant death. Best known for SIDSrelated
research and education programs, in 2002 SIDS
and Kids changed their name to reflect the expansion of
services, and now provide much-needed counselling and
support to all Australian families who have suffered the
sudden death of an infant or child, regardless of the age
or cause. This service is provided free of charge, and
available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Who benefits from SIDS and Kids services?
Since 1990, the SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping program
has been instrumental in reducing the SIDS infant
mortality rate by 85%, equalling more that 7,000
Australian babies' lives saved. However each month
approximately 200 Australian children die suddenly and
unexpectedly from causes such as stillbirth, neonatal
death, SIDS, a fast onset illness, drowning, poisoning,
fire or motor vehicle accident. SIDS and Kids have a
wide range of well-established programs and over 28
years experience in supporting families at this time.
Their professional counsellors and trained volunteer
peer supporters work together to help families through
the tragic death of their child. More than 60 people are
affected by the death of a child. SIDS and Kids programs
are offered free of charge to all family members and
friends who need support. For as long as they need
them, SIDS and Kids are there!
Why a Red Nose?
In 1988, the Red Nose Day concept was adopted by
SIDS and Kids organisations around Australia. Since
then, people, cars and buildings around the nation have
joined in the fun. The red nose always brings a smile to
people's faces. By wearing a red nose you can be silly
for a great cause.
Where do Red Nose Day funds go?
Proceeds from Red Nose Day assist us in providing the
following vital services and programs:
• 24 hour, 365 days a year crisis outreach and ongoing
bereavement support for families and the community
Friday 29th June 2012
June / July 2012
following the sudden and unexpected death of an
infant or child, regardless of the age or cause.
• The SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping Program, an
evidence-based health promotion campaign
which offers practical advice to parents and health
professionals about how to best reduce the risks of
SIDS and sleep accidents.
• Research into the causes and prevention of sudden
and unexpected death in the perinatal period and
infancy.
SiDS and Kids Safe Sleeping
The current health promotion program, SIDS and Kids
Safe Sleeping, is evidence based and provides families,
infant carers and health professionals with information
about how to reduce the risk of SIDS and create a safe
sleeping environment for babies. More information on
this is available at www.sidsandkids.org. The SIDS and
Kids Safe Sleeping program recommends:
• Put baby on the back to sleep, from birth.
• Sleep baby with face uncovered.
• Cigarette smoke is bad for baby.
• Safe cot, safe mattress, safe bedding, safe sleeping
place, night and day.
NutritioN aNd hydratioN
for exercise
Good nutrition and hydration are essential to help you perform at your
best when exercising. For anyone who will be exercising for an extended
period, it is important to plan what you eat and drink before, during and
after exercise. For anyone participating in exercise at a more moderate
level, a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and water
will usually suffice.
fuel for exercise
The body’s main sources of fuel during exercise are fat and carbohydrate,
and the one you need to focus on is carbohydrate. This is because we all
have ample stores of fat to undertake even the longest bouts of exercise
(unless in a state of starvation). However, our carbohydrate stores (in the
form of muscle glycogen) are more limited and can become significantly
depleted during vigorous exercise in excess of 90 minutes or moderate
exercise of a longer duration (several hours).
Carbohydrate stores can also become depleted over the course of several
exercise sessions, if not replenished through appropriate nutrition
between times. Depleted muscle glycogen will impair your capacity to
exercise, limiting how fast you can run, cycle or swim. This is clearly
evident in some people at the end of a marathon, in which their muscles
have become depleted of glycogen and they struggle to maintain a speed
faster than a slow jog.
fluid for exercise
Maintaining your body in a fully hydrated state is essential for both your
health and performance when exercising. If you are dehydrated you will
have a reduced blood volume and less fluid available to form sweat.
Dehydration will reduce your capacity to deliver oxygen to your muscles
and your ability to prevent your body from overheating, both of which
will adversely affect your exercise performance. So it’s important to be
fully hydrated when you start exercising, and to maintain a regular intake
of fluids while exercising to prevent dehydration.
food and fluid Before exercise
In most circumstances, most of us will have enough stored fat and
carbohydrate to fuel our next exercise session without needing to make
special arrangements. However, if you are undertaking a more prolonged
or vigorous bout of exercise, you may wish to maximise your glycogen
stores before you exercise, and you can do this by eating a meal between
one and 4 hours beforehand. This allows enough time for the meal to be
digested. Ideally, you should eat a small amount of food that is low in fibre
for easy digestion.
To increase your body’s fuel supply, the meal should be predominantly
carbohydrate — approximately 2 to 5 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram
of bodyweight. Meals based around rice, pasta, bread or potatoes are
often advocated by sports dietitians. The meal should also be low in fat
and protein, to minimise any gastrointestinal discomfort.
For most sports and types of exercise, it is recommended that you drink
400-600 mL of fluid one to 2 hours before the activity, and another 200-
400 mL 15 minutes before exercising. Water is usually a suitable choice of
fluid to drink before exercising.
food and fluid during exercise
Fluid loss can impair performance and can affect your body’s ability to
control its own temperature. If you are exercising for less than 60 minutes,
you should drink approximately 200 mL of fluid every 15-20 minutes.
Water is appropriate in this situation. In longer duration activities where
there is a risk of glycogen depletion, such as more than 60 minutes of
vigorous exercise, a sports drink containing glucose and electrolytes can
be most effective. And for activities lasting several hours these sports
drinks can be supplemented with energy bars.
Post exercise food and fluid
After exercise it is important to restore your body’s fuel and fluid stores
to normal levels. For most people this is easily achieved by following a
healthy diet that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, and plenty of
non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
Replacing fluid stores largely depends on how much fluid was lost during
exercise. This can be calculated by comparing your pre- and post-exercise
bodyweight. A simpler method is to check your urine. You need to drink
sufficient fluid until you are passing clear, dilute urine.
The amount of fluid that you'll need to drink will depend upon how much
you’ve sweated and the temperature of the environment. So on hot days
after a vigorous bout of exercise, you may need to drink several litres. In
doing so, be wary of consuming it in the form of sugary drinks, as you may
take in more calories than you’ve burned off during the exercise. This may
not be a problem if you are a highly trained sports person with a good
body composition, but will be contrary to your goals if you are trying to
lose weight.
To replenish your glycogen stores after exercising vigorously, you need to
eat 1-1.5 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of bodyweight within the
first couple of hours after exercise. Ideally, this should be in the form of
high GI foods, such as sports drinks, muffins or white bread. Over the 24
hours after exercise, a total of 7 to 10 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram
of bodyweight should be ingested to maximise the glycogen stores again,
thereby preparing you for your next bout of exercise.

THE first rotation of around 200 United
States Marine Corps personnel
arrived in Darwin on Tuesday night of
the 3rd of April 2012.
This initial rotation is an integral part
of the enhanced practical cooperation
measures pursuant to the Australia-
United States Alliance relationship
announced by Prime Minister Julia
Gillard and United States President
Barack Obama on 16 November 2011.
It represents an evolution of existing
exercises and activities that the United
States (US) already conducts with the
australian Defence Force (aDF) in
Australia. Existing exercises include the
biennial Exercise Talisman Sabre in the
Northern Territory and Queensland, the
most recent of which in 2011 involved
close to 22,500 Australian and US troops
working together.
As part of the ongoing US consideration
of its global force posture, this initiative
will see US Marine Corps personnel
deploying to Northern Australia on a
rotational basis for around six months
per year.
Over the six month period, this initial
US Marine Corps rotation will undertake
The first contingent of the United States Marine Corps arrive at RAAF Base Darwin.
bilateral training in Australia with the
aDF and conduct unilateral training in
Australia.
The US Marines will spend the majority
of that time in ADF Northern Territory
training areas and ranges including
the Mount Bundey and Kangaroo Flats
Training Areas.
The initial rotation will be a US Marine
Corps infantry company, which will
not include heavy equipment, vehicles
or aircraft. Air and sea movements in
support of this rotation are minimal.
The intent in the coming years is to
establish a rotational presence of up to a
2,500 personnel Marine Air Ground Task
Force (MAGTF), rotating into Northern
Australia in the northern dry season.
A full MAGTF includes a Command
Element, Ground Element, Aviation
Element and Logistics Element. Major
equipment to support the elements of
the MAGTF includes wheeled vehicles,
artillery pieces, light armoured vehicles
and aircraft, in addition to personnel.
There are no US military bases in
Australia, and this will not change.
will provide a range of support to this
initial rotation and costs for this rotation
will be shared under existing legal,
financial and logistical arrangements.
Australia and the US continue to work
together to establish specific activities
that will occur during this initial rotation,
and will continue to work closely with
the Northern Territory Government.
This initiative will provide tangible
benefits for Australia by increasing
the number, variety and complexity of
training opportunities for the ADF, and
further developing our interoperability
with US forces.
It also supports Australia’s long-held
strategic interests in supporting US
engagement in our region in a manner
that promotes peace and stability.
The initiative could also provide new
opportunities for Australiana and US
engagement with our partners in the
region.
The Government welcomes this latest
chapter in the more than sixty year
Alliance relationship with the United
States.

rwanda
unamir 1994/95
By Kevin O'Halloran
Rwanda is no stranger to violence. In
1994, an orgy of killing swept across the
tiny land-locked nation and genocide -
the size and magnitude unseen since the
Hitler horrors of WWII, erupted. Around
one million men, women and children
were mercilessly shot, hacked to death or
burnt alive. To alleviate the suffering and
restore order to shattered lives, a group of
Australian UN peacekeepers was sent to
Rwanda under a United Nations’ mandate.
These Australians would be exposed to a
lack of humanity they were not prepared
for and found hard to fathom.
On 22 April 1995, the daily horror and
tragedy they had witnessed escalated out
of control. At a displaced persons’ camp
in Kibeho, in full view of the Australian
soldiers, over 4,000 unarmed men, women
and children died in a hail of bullets,
grenades and machete blades at the hands
of the Rwandan Patriotic Army.
Rwanda – UNIMIR 1994/95 is a detailed
account of what happened during this
peacekeeping mission. Kevin O’Halloran, a
Platoon Sergeant at the time, has recorded
these events using material from numerous
interviews and eyewitness accounts.
Author Biography
Kevin ‘Irish’ O’Halloran was born in Dublin,
Ireland in 1961 and migrated to australia
with his parents, elder brother and two
sisters in 1970. He grew up around the
inner suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, for
most of his teenage years.
In April 1981, he joined the Army and
has served on four operational tours of
duty, all in the Royal australian Infantry
Corps (RAInf ); two with the 1st Battalion,
the Royal australian Regiment (1 RaR)
and two with the 2nd Battalion, the Royal
Australian Regiment (2 RAR).
He retired from the Army in 2011 after
30 years’ service. He has written one other
book on Rwanda titled Pure Massacre
which is his and others’ personal accounts
of the deployment to Rwanda and the
massacre that occurred at Kibeho in 1995.
Lost At Sea
Found at Fukushima
By Andy Millar
On a calm, tropical afternoon in the South
Atlantic Ocean in April 1942, a British tramp
steamer, the SS Willesden, was shelled,
torpedoed and sunk by a German raider,
the KMS Thor. The Willesden was carrying
47 officers and crew, and a cargo of vital
war supplies destined for Britain’s 8th
Army in North Africa. Five of Willesden’s
crew were killed in the attack. Among the
survivors was Second Mate David Millar,
who – along with his crewmen – was
rescued by the Germans and interned
on a succession of prison ships, before
being handed over to the Japanese. Badly
wounded, David spent the rest of the war
as a POW in a camp at Fukushima, north
of Tokyo.
Lost at Sea tells the little-known story
of the 130 survivors, remarkably listed
"Missing at Sea" for months and in some
June / July 2012
cases years. It is a tale of honour between
enemy naval commanders; of suffering,
courage and endurance, as months of
imprisonment turned to years; and of
the powerful relationships that form
when people are forced together in lifethreatening
circumstances.
Author Biography
Andy Millar is a retired Navy Commander,
having served 26 years in the Royal New
Zealand Navy (RNZN) and 14 years in the
Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The David Millar who features in [title]
was his father. Andy was born in the UK in
1939. His family emigrated to New Zealand
after World War Two, upon his father’s
return from enduring three years as a
POW in Japan. Joining the RNZN in 1959,
Andy trained as an officer at the Britannia
Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK. Over
the next 26 years he rose to the rank of
Commander, before transferring to the RAN
to take up a position with the Collins Class
submarine project.
A highlight of his career was a secondment
to the Royal Malaysian Navy from 1966-68,
during ‘The Confrontation’ with Indonesia.
During this time, he commanded a Fast
Patrol Boat of similar size and capability to
the German E-boats that feature in Lost at
Sea. Andy retired from the RAN in 1999
and now lives in Canberra.
The August Offensive
at anZac, 1915
By David W. Cameron
Author David Cameron has a fascination
for Gallipoli. He has written three books
on the subject and his latest book The
August Offensive provides the first detailed
synthesised account of some of the
bloodiest battles since the landing at Anzac
Cove and there failure would be pivotal in
the decision to evacuate Gallipoli.
The battles of Lone Pine, The Nek,
Chunuk Bair, and Hill 971 where a concerted
effort by the empire troops to break the
uneasy stalemate that by mid-May 1915
ensued between the empires troops and
the Turks. The Turks held the high ground
(a tactic victory) while the allied troops
were trapped on Anzac beach, a strip of
ground that acted as an enlarged prison.
The necessity to break out of the Anzac
Cove was imperative if the empire troops
where to reach their original goal of laying
siege to Turkey. The main attacks of the
August Offensive commenced at Lone Pine
on 6 August and by 10 August, just five days
later, the allied troop’s objective to take
the heights would have failed – thousands
of soldiers where dead or wounded –
evacuation was almost a certainty.
David Cameron provides an insight into
the strategy, leadership and lessons of
war; he captures what happens when an
overarching strategic goal does not take
into account the tactical considerations
and realities on the ground. At Gallipoli,
this resulted in thousands of casualties
as men were thrown continually into the
meat grinder of the August Offensive.
Additional Information
• The August Offensive or ‘Anzac
Breakout’ at Gallipoli was designed
to break the uneasy stalemate at
Gallipoli. The Turks where content to
allow the invading forces occupation
of Anzac Cove while denying them
further progress inland.
• The Turks didn’t need to break in
the Anzac Sector – they won just by
keeping the Empire troops bottled
into the small Anzac pocket.
• The initial objective was the Sari Bair
Range and pending on the success
of this first stage of the operation,
operational orders would have been
issued to continue the advance
towards Mel Tepe and the Dardanelles
side of the peninsula.
• The Nek was supposed to have been
a pincer movement with the New
Zealanders attacking the position
from the rear (after having captured
Chunuk Bair on the morning of 7
August). This never happened, but
the Australians were still ordered to
charge from the front.
• Lone Pine is positioned along the
southern flank at Anzac – it was
fought to draw Turkish reserves away
from the northern heights
• David also wrote Gallipoli: The Final
Battles and Evacuation at Anzac
(2010).
Author Biography
David W. Cameron first became interested
in the Gallipoli campaign from a preliminary
archaeological survey of the anzac
battlefields he conducted in 2003 where
as part of his research he found out he had
a relative that landed on the 1st day and
was killed on 29 April. This introduction
would foster a passion for recording the
overarching history of Gallipoli – The
August Offensive is his third book on the
battles for Anzac.
David is internationally known as an
expert on primate and human evolution
and has a degree in both archaeology and
Palaeoanthropology. He was formerly an
Australian Research Council QEII Fellow at
the Department of Anatomy & Histology at
the University of Sydney. He has conducted
numerous international archaeological
and palaeonathropological excavations
in Europe, Middle East and Asia. David is
based in Canberra and married with three
children (and two dogs).
www.allrecipes.com.au
Serves: 8
Ready in: 35 minutes
INgrEdIENTS
350g plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp ground ginger
100g butter
150g brown sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
1 egg
Currants, choc chips and/or nuts
to decorate
METhOd
1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees. Sift
together the flour, ginger and bicarb.
Chop the butter and rub into the
flour mixture until it resembles fine
bread crumbs. Stir in the sugar.
2. Beat together the syrup and the egg,
and stir into flour mixture. Knead
with floured hands to form a
smooth dough.
3. Roll out on a floured surface till
it's about 0.5 cm thick. Using a
gingerbread man cutter, cut shapes
until all of the dough has been used,
rerolling the trimmings. Lay these on
lined baking trays.
4. Decorate with currants, choc chips,
nuts or however for the eyes and
buttons.
5. Bake at 190 degrees for 15 mins, until
golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
Territory Catteries
& Boarding Kennels
GOING away on holiday, deployment or perhaps that
special night away and need the assistance of a
professional sitter for your pooch or feline friend? There
are some fantastic kennels and catteries in the NT. A great
solution to your dog or cat woes...giving you piece of mind
when you're away. Personally, I have had my best friend board
at Helga's Pet Resort. I was absolutely beside myself having
to leave him behind when I went on holidays. All that anxiety
was put to rest when I rang to check on him, on numerous
occasions, and when I picked him up he totally didn't want a
bar of me. Tells me he had a great time!
It's a good start to take the time out and visit a number of
boardings before you make a decision on where your friend is
going to stay. You need to be certain that the sitters are going
to give your pet the right care you are after and what your pet
needs. Facilities also need to be up to scratch - clean, shade
available, fresh water, exercise yards, individual pens, space,
concrete or paved flooring (lawn or dirt can not be washed
and is not a clean environment), cane toad protection and an
action plan if a cyclone was to hit. It is strongly recommended
June / July 2012
you be extremely wary of any business that refuses to let you
see their facilities for yourself. ALWAYS visit kennels/catteries
before booking your friend in to check for yourself - have
no regrets! I drove to a few kennels and checked out their
facilities before choosing to have my dog board at Helga's Pet
Resort. You really do need to take the time out to view the
premises to make sure that all advertising and promises do
meet up to your standards.
I've put together a list of catteries and kennels found on the
internet. It is up to you, the reader, to decide on a location for
placement of your pet if you are looking for pet boarding. The
Top Ender does not have a preference of one over the other,
has not checked out these facilities, has only gathered contact
information for the reader to further investigate boarding
options. A great place to start looking is on the internet, or
the yellow pages, and check out their websites if they have
one. If not, request a flyer, brochure or information pack to be
sent out. Remember to always book an appointment to view
the facilites so you will have piece of mind and your pet will
be in great care! Amanda Fryer - TTE Graphic Designer

Greyhound adoption
program NT
Adopt a friend for life!
Like other states in Australia, Darwin Greyhound Racing community is getting its’ own
Greyhound Adoption Program (to be known as GAPNT)
Working in conjunction with the Darwin Greyhound Racing Club, GAP aims to re-home
greyhounds at the end of their racing careers. Dogs are assessed to measure their suitability
as family pets before being placed with foster carers on their way to their eventual homes.
Greyhounds are very affectionate, do not require lots of exercise and are generally very
healthy. They make the transition from sprinter to couch potato very easily and make excellent
pets. All dogs re-homed through GAP NT will be health checked, desexed, microchipped,
vaccinated, and treated for parasites.
Anyone interested in either fostering or re-homing
please call Eileen Fletcher on 0423 499 118 or email info@gapnt.org.au
Travelling with Your pet
IT'S that time of year when we consider travelling home to visit
family during the 4 week school break, going on a short trip
or perhaps long overdue holiday. If you are considering taking
your pet with you, you may want to ask yourself... will my cat or
dog be comfortable and happy on a trip? Some animals simply
prefer to stay at home and a "homesick", possibly motion-sick
pet will ruin everyone’s trip. In such a case it’s probably wiser
to leave your pet with a friend, relative or hire a "petsitter". If
that is not possible, you might consider boarding him at your
veterinary clinic or a clean, well-run kennel or cattery.
If you do decide to take your pet along for the journey, you
must take as much care with the preparation of your pet’s trip
as your own. If you plan to travel by plane, find out if your pet
will be welcome and what kind of reservations and transport
arrangements must be made. If you’ll be staying at hotels,
motels or campgrounds, you must check if animals are allowed
or if kennel facilities are available. If you’re staying with friends
or family, make sure your pet is also invited.
TrAVELLINg By CAr
If your pet is not used to being in a car, take him or her for a
few short rides before your trip. Your cat will probably be most
comfortable in a carrier.
Pets should NEVER be allowed to put their heads outside the
window when riding in a car. Dirt particles or stones flicked up
by tyres can cause injury or infections. It may seem like fun
for them, and I'm sure they will be having a ball, but this is a
serious and dangerous plight. Kids' can't do it so neither should
our pets.
Dogs travelling in the back of utes should be either caged or
tethered. The lead or chain should be attached to a harness
or secure neck collar, with the other end securely fastened to
a point near the middle of the cabin. The chain or lead should
be of a length that will allow the dog to lie down, stand and
move about, but should be short enough so that the dog
cannot put its legs over the ute's sides or climb onto the roof of
the cabin.
Plan ‘snack’, exercise and rest stops about every two hours if
you’re taking a long drive. Water, water, water!
Give the main meal at the end of the day. Dry food is most
convenient, but if your pet needs canned food, dispose of any
unused portions if they cannot be refrigerated.
It is not recommended to leave your dog or your cat in a parked
car for a prolonged period of time. If you must leave your pet
in a parked car, lock all doors and open windows enough to
provide good ventilation, without allowing them enough room
to jump out or get their head caught. Remember, on hot days
the temperature in a parked car can rise to dangerous levels
in just minutes and your pet could die of heat stroke.

identification and a registration tag.
Pack his or her favourite food, toys and dishes, a cooler of
water and a leash.
Have your pet examined and vaccinated, if necessary, by
your veterinarian before a long trip.
If your pet must travel in a crate or carrier, be sure it is
strong, large enough for them to stand up and turn around,
has a place for food and water, is well ventilated, has a
leak-proof bottom and closes securely.
Contact the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service
CONGRATULATIONS!
Well, following a rather mild wet season things
have turned out much better than expected on
the fishing front. Easter 2012 will be remembered as
'Metrey Easter' with the barra fishing best described as
Mayhem. I kid you not....I am sick and tired of hearing
the metrey stories!
You name the river and the fish were there...The Daly,
The South, The East, The adelaide, The Finniss, The
Moyle, The Roper....perhaps it was the humungous
moon that turned 'em on but whatever it was I wish it
would do it again.
Both my staff, Mal and Rob notched up metreys. Rob
managed two at The South at 105cm and Mal nudged
108cm from Dundee Beach. Things don't seem to be
changing in a hurry either. Reports from The Daly (prior
to The Barra Nationals) included 11 over the metre mark
from one boat alone! Need I say more....
