Confessions in Cathedral every Saturday:
12 Confessions to 1pm & also in Cathedral before and every after Saturday: 6.30pm Mass
12 to 1pm & also before and after 6.30pm Mass
28th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) 14th October, 2012.
There was a miserly man who made good
money all of his life but hoarded it. He
wouldn't spend a cent of it. He kept his wife to
a strict budget so she could only buy the
barest of essentials at the supermarket and
just enough to pay for the electricity and
council rates. He wouldn’t even keep his
money in a bank because he didn’t want to
pay the bank fees. He kept his money hidden
away in a box behind some loose bricks in the
fireplace.
As it turns out, the man suffered a heart attack
and was dying. He called his wife and told her
about the money. She was ecstatic until he
told her to put it by the upstairs bedroom
window so he could grab it as he went by on
his way to heaven.
Despite his miserly way, his wife loved him
very much and decided to comply with his last
request. He died about two hours later. Three
days after the funeral, she happened to be in
the upstairs bedroom doing some cleaning
when she remembered the box. It was still
there. So was the money. She clutched the
box, shook her head and in her grief said,
"Oh, George, George, George. I knew I
should have put it down by the cellar door."
Jesus tells the young man: "sell everything ...
give the money to the poor ... then come
follow me." Christ, the good physician,
looked with love into the man's heart and saw
his riches blocked out God.
Question for us is: What in our lives keeps us
from God? What do we own, or do, or like so
much we forget about Christ?
If something blocks out God, Christ says:
"Get rid of it. Then, come, follow me."

Tráth Cinniúnach in Éirinn
(A Decisive Time for Ireland)
Tá tráth cinniúnach do mhuintir na hÉireann
buailte linn. Caithfidh an Rialtas cinneadh a
dhéanamh i gceann cúpla seachtain, maidir le
bhreithiúnas ón gCúirt Eorpach um Chearta
an Duine 2010. In ainneoin cuid de na
tuairimí atá á scaipeadh ag daoine áirithe, níl
dualgas ar bith ar an Rialtas Éireannach
reachtaíocht maidir leis an nginmhilleadh a
thabhairt isteach de bharr an rialú seo ón
gCúirt Eorpach. Tá an tsaoirse ag an Rialtas
dualgas cúraim a léiriú go dlíthiúil go bhfuil
ceart chun na beatha ag an leanbh sa bhroinn
in Éirinn. Tá bileog eolais La Fhéile na Beatha
eisithe ag Easpaig na hÉireann agus is fiú
dúinn go léir é a léamh agus machnamh a
dhéanamh air. Iarrtar orainn freisin paidir ar
son na beatha a rá gach lá as seo amach go
dtí Lá Fhéile Naoimh Uile na hÉireann ar an 6
Samhain chun go dtabharfaidh an rialtas in
Éirinn breith ar son na beatha.
Now is a decisive time for Ireland, as in the
next few weeks the Government must
respond to the 2010 judgment of the
European Court of Human Rights. Despite
some assertions, the Irish Government is
under no obligation to legislate for abortion
because of the ruling of the European Court.
The Government is free to respond by
seeking full protection in Irish law for the right
to life of the unborn. The Irish bishops have
issued a leaflet Day for Life which we ought
to read and reflect on. We are also asked to
say the Choose Life prayer each day until the
Feast of All the Saints of Ireland 6 November
so that the Irish Government will make the
choice for life.
People of the Year
worthy of such recognition, we would
appreciate your nominating them.
information about the person being
nominated and a brief outline of the
October is the month of the
Holy Rosary. The word Rosary
means “Crown of Roses”. Our
Lady has revealed to several
people that each time they say a Hail Mary
they are giving her a beautiful rose and that
each complete Rosary makes her a crown of
roses. The Rose is the queen of flowers and
so the rosary is the rose of all devotions and it
is therefore the most important one.
Do you want to enrich your
knowledge of your Faith &
deepen your prayer life? Starting
in November, a 12-week Home
Study course on prayer, with one
night per week for discussion.
This study is based on Part 1V of
the Catechism of the Catholic
Church which tells us that ‘it is
right and good to pray, so that
the coming of he kingdom of
justice and peace may influence
the march of history’. Pope
Benedict has written that ‘on
page after page of the
catechism, we find that what is
presented here is no theory, but
an encounter with a Person,
Jesus Christ, God made man’.
Autumn is one of the
greatest examples of
change in our world.
It is so powerful and
moving, and we can learn from
it. Is there something in your
own life that you would like to
change? Before the season
ends, take it upon yourself to
'change your colour', and see
what letting go of the old and
First Reading: Wisdom 7:7-11
A reading from the book of Wisdom.
I prayed, and understanding was given me;
I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones;
compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
I reckoned no priceless stone to be her peer,
for compared with her, all gold is a pinch of sand,
and beside her silver ranks as mud.
I loved her more than health or beauty,
preferred her to the light,
since her radiance never sleeps.
In her company all good things came to me,
at her hands riches not to be numbered.
The word of the Lord
Responsorial Psalm:
Response: .
Fill us with your love that we may rejoice.
Make us know the shortness of our life
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever?
Show pity to your servants. R.
In the morning, fill us with your love;
we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Give us joy to balance our affliction
for the years when we knew misfortune R.
Show forth your work to your servants;
let your glory shine on their children.
Let the favour of the Lord be upon us:
give success to the work of our hands. R .
Today’s Scripture Readings
Second Reading: Hebrews 4:12-13
A reading from the letter to the Hebrews.
The word of God is something alive and active; it cuts like any
double-edged sword but more finely: it can slip through the place
where the soul is divided from the spirit, or joints from the
marrow; it can judge the secret emotions and thoughts. No
created thing can hide from God; everything is uncovered and
open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account of
ourselves.
The word of the Lord
With Inclusive Language
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia!
Blessed are you, Father,
Lord of heaven and earth,
for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom
to mere children.
Alleluia!
Gospel: Mark 10:17-30
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt
before him and put this question to him, 'Good master, what must
I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me
good? No one is good but God alone. You know the
commandments: You must not kill; You must not commit
adultery; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness;
You must not defraud; Honour your father and mother.' And he
said to him, 'Master, I have kept all these from my earliest days.'
Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him, and he said, 'There
is one thing you lack. Go and sell everything you own and give
the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;
then come, follow me.' But his face fell at these words and he
went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.
Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for
those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!' The
disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My
children,' he said to them, 'how hard it is to enter the kingdom of
God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.' They were
more astonished than ever. 'In that case' they said to one
another, 'who can be saved?' Jesus gazed at them. 'For us' he
said, 'it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is
possible for God.
Peter took this up. 'What about us?' he asked him. 'We have left
everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'I tell you solemnly,
there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father,
mother, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the
gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over, houses,
brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children and land - not without
persecutions - now in this present time and, in the world to come,
eternal life.'
