Cattle Handling Systems - Corral Design
Low Stress Sorting
The goal of sorting is to work your cattle as efficiently as possible with a minimum of stress for both you and
your animals. The most common sorting methods employ a single sorting gate. Over the long run, however,
the efficiencies of a two-gate system may offset the lower construction costs of the single gate system.
•Method #1: Two sorting gates are hinged on the center post and the open gates rest at an angle on the opposite side of the alley.
•This method is commonly used at auction marts becuase it is safe and highly efficient.
•While the up-front corral construction costs are higher the gains in safety and efficiency are
tremendous.
•As described above the gates mounted on the center post will provide much better flow
both in and out of the sorting pen.
•The advantage of the double gate system is that the animals do not need to be turned in
the alley. Working two gates is much less work for the handler and much less stressful on
your cattle.
•Method #2: A single sorting gate is hinged on the center post and the open gate rests at an angle on the opposite alley fenceline.
• The handler is secure because the gate cannot be pushed through by the livestock.
• The animals flow smoothly into the pen because the livestock can see well into the pen.
• The downside is the handler is required to first run the animals past the pen and then turn
them in the alley before returning them to sort into the pen.
•Method #3: A single sorting gate is hinged on the center post and the open gate latches directly across the alley.
•If the handler has time to secure the sorting gate securely this gate will be safer than method #4.
•If the gate is not securely latched however and the handler assumes that the gate is properly
locked he may place himself in greater danger than he would in Method #4.
•The sorting gate’s hinge point on the center post is better than when the hinge point is on
the corner post because the cattle can see further into the pen.
•The gate locking perpendicular to the cattle flow in the alley is not as good as in Method
#2 where the gate rests at an angle. When the gate is square to the sorting alley cattle
sometimes perceive the alley as a dead-end and you may find them turning in the alley
before they reach the sorting pen. With the gate at an angle the cattle flow into the sorting
pen will be much smoother.
•Method #4: A single sorting gate is hinged on the corner post and the open gate swings freely in the alley.
•An alley wider than your sort gate may be required to allow access for large farm equipment.
•If access for farm equipment is not required then the wider alley would be a disadvantage
as the wide alley makes it more difficult to control cattle.
•Without a post or fenceline to secure the open gate the handler risks being injured by the
cattle pushing the sorting gate through.
•The hinge point on the corner post makes it more difficult to sort because the cattle cannot see
as far into the sorting pen as they can when the gate is hung on the center post (see Method
#1, 2 and 3).
BEST OPTION
WORST OPTION
SAMPLE CORRAL #1
This corral is located in relation to an
existing barn and fence line. The handling
system is located centrally
between the barn and the sorting pens.
The animals enter the corrals from the
pasture through the sorting alley and
on into the holding pen with feed and
water. The cattle return up the sorting
alley past three sorting pens. Each
sorting pen includes two gates for safe,
efficient sorting. From the sorting pens
the cattle continue back towards the
pasture where they are redirected
through the crowding tub, adjustable
S-alley, palpation cage and into the
parallel axis squeeze chute.
SAMPLE CORRAL #2
This corral is designed for a rancher
who required both pre-sorting and postsorting
pens. The cattle are brought
from the pasture through the sorting
alley and into a holding pen for feed
and water. From the holding pen the
cattle can be easily worked back into
the sorting alley for pre-sorting. From
these pens the cattle are brought up into
the working alley and the handling system.
This handling system includes a
load out gate and loading chute off the
funnel crowding tub. Sorting after the
squeeze can be easily accommodated
with this highly functional design. Grid
based designs are easy to lay-out and
easy to add-on to.
SAMPLE CORRAL #3
This design uses a circular lay-out.
The cattle are herded along an existing
fence line and funneled into the core of
the circle. At the center of the circle are
a series of gates through which cattle
can be easily and efficiently sorted.
The same pens can be used for both
pre-sorting and post-sorting. This particular
handling system uses a PASS section
instead of our standard Palpation
Cage. This addition provides the
opportunity to sort-out to a calf tipping
table. Although circular corrals can be
extremely efficient, they are not as
flexible as grid-based corrals when
you wish to alter or add-on to the layout.
tubing.
• The cage can be accessed from either side. It includes two heavy duty
66” high gates equipped with spring loaded plunger latches.
• Gates lock quickly and securely both in the closed position as well as
across the alley providing a barrier from animals in the alley.
• Each of the gates on the adjustable palpation cage include a swing
panel which swings in and locks to create a narrow ‘V’ alley which
deters calves from turning around.
• Cage connects directly to squeeze and alley spreaders.
Working Alleys
Hi-Hog offers two fully adjustable working alleys: the S-Alley and the U-Alley. The S-Alley provides excellent forward
movement while the U-Alley turns 60º with each alley section. Hi-Hog also offers special transition alley spreaders
which allow the operator to combine the S and U-Alleys. All of the alley panels are hung above the ground on
adjustable alley spreaders. These spreaders allow the operator to quickly adjust and securely lock each alley section
to fit the size of the cattle being processed. The alley width adjusts from 32” down to 18” and anywhere in between.
The adjustable panels are 66” high. The stationary panels, on which the elevated walks are hung, are 60” high.
S-Alley
The S-Alley was created by Hi-Hog to take advantage of instinctive catttle behaviours. The alternating curves of the
S-Alley encourage the lead animal to move forward in pursuit of an escape back to the pasture. As the lead animal disappears
around the curve of the S-Alley the herding instinct of the other
animals draws them forward. The S-Alley can be set up on
uneven ground. Any of the spreaders described can be replaced
with an adjustable alley spreader complete with a rolling door.
Sample U-Alley
physical space is limited. This compact working system works
best when it is set on a hard level surface. The U-Alley is a
proven performer for safe and efficient livestock handling. The
U-Alley length comes in 12’, 24’ and 36’ lengths.
Crowding Tub
Hi-Hog’s heavy-duty 20’ diameter, fully reversible crowding tub is constructed with 66” high sheeted perimeter panels.
These panels are held in position by extra heavy duty overhead tub spreaders anchored with ground stakes. The pivot
gate comes mounted in its own frame. The hinges are 2-7/8” O.D. x 4” and come with grease zerts for outstanding year
round performance. In addition, the spring loaded pivot gate latch is rubber coated for a smooth, quiet and secure operation.
The value of a safe and efficient Crowding Tub is often overlooked. The crowding tub, as a transition tool for moving
animals from a wide alley into a narrow working alley, is often filled with anxious livestock and the ground is often
wet and uneven. A well designed tub considers these conditions.
The Hi-Hog Difference:
1) Most tub designs include an array of tub spreaders which include large pipes along the ground. With wet or uneven
ground conditions these rails create a tripping hazard or leg trap for both livestock and the handler. Hi-Hog eliminates
these rails making the tub safer for livestock as well as insuring the handler never has to worry about tripping over a
rail as they swing the pivot gate.
2) Some manufacturers have a gap at the bottom of their tub panels. While they claim this gap may extend the life of
the tub panel it may also shorten the lives of your cattle. This gap is a leg trap. Hi-Hog removes this hazard by sheeting
the bottom 48” of the tub with heavy gauge sheet metal.
3) Most tub designs include a gap between the spreader and the tub panel. If your livestock get their legs up on the
top rail they can slide along the rail until they fall off the end of the panel into this leg trap. Hi-Hog has welded loops at
the end of the top horizontal to remove this trap.
4) Some manufactures offer an open rail pivot gate which presents numurous dangers to both livestock and handler. Hi-
Hog’s pivot gate is sheeted to protect the handler and to keep livestock focused on finding the exit into the working alley.
5) Most manufactures offer very limited, if any, design flexibility . Hi-Hog recognizes that ranchers are often faced with
design challenges that can’t be met with standard tub designs. Hi-Hog components are designed with a common connector
system. This gives Hi-Hog unmatched design flexibility. With well over 60 crowding tub designs available Hi-
Hog can build a tub, using standard stock products, to fit your needs.
Crowding Tub with Funnel Section
Use: This is our most popular crowding tub. This tub will provide
180º of cattle movement. The funnel configuration offers the
smoothest flow into the working alley. The funnel section can
be built with either a 7’ sheeted panel or our 7’ double load-out
gate which gives you the option of loading out of your tub.
Cattle Handling Tips
TIP Cattle will move into the working alley most efficiently when the the angle from the incoming alley, through the
crowding tub and out into the working alley is between 90º and 180º, with 180º being the best.
TIP Cattle will move from the crowding tub into the working alley most efficiently when they can see one full body
length into the alley.
TIP Cattle have a strong desire to stay with the rest of the herd. This is why the S-Alley and the U-Alley are so effective.
As the first animal moves out of the crowding tub and disappears around the curve of the working alley the herding
instinct of the other animals drives them to follow their herd mates in order to keep them in sight.
TIP When running calves from the crowding tub into the alley, instead of narrowing the full length of the alley to the
width of your calves, leave the first alley spreader fully open. This gives the calves a larger opening to find when they
are in the crowding tub. You will find your calves enter the alley with much less hesitation.
Calving Enclosure
Designed for safe and efficient calving. The self catch headgate
with adjustable stanchions is centered so the cow is accessible
from both sides. The centered headgate is great for getting twins to
suck, or to get a calf to suck while you milk out on the other side.
The convenient entrance gates on either side of the headgate
come with self-locking plunger latches for quick access. The split
side panels can be swung out to the sides of the enclosure to assist
in catching the cow and because the split panels hit the side panels
at an angle the handler can't get trapped. The split gates can
be easily removed to create a 66" high, 10' x 10' pen. When the
calving season is over the components can be used elsewhere.
The side panels extend 2' beyond the front panel to provide added
stability. Overall size is 10' x 12'.
Tie Stalls
Hi-Hog horse stalls can be found at many of North
America’s premier equine venues including Spruce
Meadows, Thunderbird Equestrian Centre and The
Calgary Stampede. For those who demand excellence,
Hi-Hog offers a high quality portable horse stall.
Designed for quick, hassle free installation, they are
ideal for those who rent out stalls. The panels are light
enough to handle and strong enough to endure multiple
installations. A forklift and 4 men can install 300
stalls in a day.
Our partition panels come with three-way connectors on
one end. This design means that a bank of back-to-back
stalls will only need one stall post. This makes installation
a breeze. And since our three-way connectors pivot
in line with the partition for shipping you can stack them
flat and ship them efficiently without worrying about
damaging the connectors.
With the modular design you can have one stall or a
hundred stalls. Stalls can be purchased with or without
roofs. Roof tarps are designed for stall configurations
20’ wide by 30’ long minimum. For roof pricing or help
“Spruce Meadows opened in 1975 and Hi-Hog was
there. Over the years Hi-Hog has supplied Spruce
Meadows with both box stalls, temporary stalls, and
round pens. They have also supplied us with a number
of products not directly linked to the equine industry
such as bleacher stands. In addition Hi-Hog has been
able to help us with a number of special projects such as
the transport stall they built for us which we use to safely
unload horses from aircraft. We continue to work with
Hi-Hog because their products and service have always
been top notch.”
Rodeo Equipment
Roping Chute
The Hi-Hog Roping Chute is built to PRCA and CPRA specifications. This durable
chute, designed to handle both calves and steers, is manufactured using minimum
60,000 psi, high tensile steel tubing. The contoured sheeting used on the bottom
36" keep your stock facing forward with their legs and feet safely within the chute.
The spring loaded release gate can be quickly and easily tripped from the operator's
seat mounted on top, from either side of the chute, or from horseback. The
release gate springs open and locks securely to prevent the gate from swinging
back and adversely spooking the animal. The bottom half of the release gate is
sheeted to keep feet contained while the top half comes with horizontal rails to
keep your stock facing down the arena.
This chute comes equipped with quick access barrier gates on both sides. These
gates provide excellent access for attaching neck ropes or horn wraps. The simple
but solid gravity lock insures that you can work efficiently and still be confident
that your animals are securely contained.
Stock flow can be easily controlled with the lift-up tailgate. Like the release gate,
the tailgate can also be operated from the operator's seat mounted on top, or from
either side of the chute, or from horseback.
A simple lead-up alley can be made by adding two 8' long x 5' high Corral Panels
(item #760) and a 24" Alley Spreader with a Gate (item #3360).
Bison Equipment
Bison Manual Squeeze Chutes
Manual side-swing Bison Squeeze Manual swing-up Bison Squeeze
Unlike most bison squeezes where the manufacturers simply tack an open-frame cage onto the front of their cattle
squeeze and call them a bison squeeze, the Hi-Hog Parallel Axis Bison Squeeze has been designed from the ground
up solely for bison. Compare the Hi-Hog chute with others on the market and you will find the completely reversible
Hi-Hog bison squeeze longer, taller, heavier, stronger and safer.
Compared with cattle, bison exhibit much stronger ‘fight or flight’ behaviors. Bison, for example, have a much larger
flight zone, they accelerate far faster, and they are more susceptible to stress, particularly when they're isolated.
Our bison equipment is designed with a thorough understanding of these differences. Our squeeze chute is fully
sheeted to create a dark calming environment. The sheet metal has been caulked with silicone to reduce noise levels.
The inside of the squeeze is smooth and the gaps have been minimized to protects horns and feet.
In 1995, Hi-Hog redesigned and redefined the bison crash cage by sheeting in all but two narrow horizontal windows.
In previous years our crash gate was made with open bars, similar to most of the crash cages you see in the market
today. We found that the bison would ignore the bars and try to jump and ‘crash through' this type of gate, causing both
injury and stress. With Hi-Hog's closed-in crash gate bison walk calmly forward to look through the windows making it
far easier for the rancher to catch the bison the first time while minimizing animal stress and virtually eliminating
injuries.
You can choose from two manual bison squeeze chutes, the traditional side-swing crash gate (Item 2365) and the popular
swing-up crash gate (Item 2360). The hinge point on the side-swing can be easily shifted from one side to the
other. The swing-up crash gate model comes with brackets already installed to facilitate an easy and affordable
upgrade to hydraulics. For larger operations who want the convenience of hydraulics we also have a hydraulic model
(Item #2367)
The parallel squeeze action draws the tapered sides inward and forward keeping your bison centered and balanced.
Bison Working Alleys
Box Alley: The sheeted 5’ wide box alley, and 5’ to 3’ wedge are ideal
for working bison. Bison do not like to be isolated. The box alley allows
you to bring multiple bison into the alley. They have room to turn and
they are with their herd mates so they will remain relatively calm. When
you are ready to bring one of the bison ahead into the squeeze simply
slide the rolling gate across the wedge section to isolate one animal
and then quickly open the tail gate to the squeeze.
Kennels
A quality dog enclosure for the discerning pet or kennel owner.
Solid Construction: We use superior grade 2" x 4", 10 ga. steel
mesh. Each wire is individually welded to our solid square tubing
frame to create a safe and secure panel.
Safe: Unlike chainlink kennels, there are no exposed wires, no
bulky connectors, no exposed nuts or bolts and no sharp edges for
your dog to catch their collar or cut themselves on.
Square corners: In addition, our panel corners are not rounded
like some kennels. Rounded panel corners create a serious leg lock
where a leg can slide off the top rail and become trapped in the
wedge where the two panels meet. Our corners are square and
come with a connector which prevents legs from sliding into the
gap.
Secure: Our simple sliding gravity door lock accepts most padlock styles to ensure that your animal is
safe and secure.
Optional Roof: the optional roof panels will prevent your dog from escaping and ensure others won't
get in.
Quick setup: You don't need a wrench to set up this kennel. Hi-Hog's unique connectors insert quickly
and easily into the square tubing verticals to create a rigid panel-to-panel joint.
“Several years ago we set up some Hi-Hog
kennels at our vet clinic. We're very
happy with our decision. The kennels
have proven to be exceptionally sturdy
and we love their portability. We're
also very impressed with the versatility
of the modular components. So much
so that we just bought some more Hi-Hog
components to add on to our existing
bank of 5' x 10' kennels.”
when cleaning the kennel with a hose.
coat paint finish ensures you will have an attractive and lasting addition
to any yard.
HERE’S WHAT SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HI-HOG
We do on-the-farm research which requires an efficient, low stress handling system. After looking at a lot of other systems we
chose to go with Hi-Hog. Hi-Hog has thought of details that we wouldn't have. Our handling system is a safe, easy to operate,
one man operation. Fred Taylor, Owner, Allan Munroe. Farm Manager
Taylor Made Research, Livestock Division, Pierson, Mb
Anyone who has ever helped me work cattle has been impressed with my Hi-Hog squeeze chute. I can handle my biggest bulls
with ease and also head gate my baby calves for ear tagging. You've got plenty of access for any procedure. I've had my Hi-Hog
Squeeze for several years and the only time I've ever been tempted by another squeeze was when I saw the latest Hi-Hog
squeeze. Leon Steffen
Burdette, Ks
I'm sixty years old and I wouldn't be without my Hi-Hog Parallel Axis Squeeze. Safety is paramount and the Hi-Hog is the only
squeeze I feel comfortable using. The adjustments on most squeeze chutes are so cumbersome you never use them, however,
the Hi-Hog squeeze adjusts easily, even with my arthritic hands. It is exceptionally user friendly for both me and my animals - I
don't have to fight to get my big (wide) pregnant cows into the extra high, extra wide chute for their pre-calving vaccinations. I'm
not sure who loves this chute more - me, my cattle, or my Vet! In my opinion, you simply cannot get better value for the money.
Elizabeth May, May Meadows Farms
Hawkestone, On
We run a commercial cow/calf operation. Most of the time it's just my wife and I working the cattle. With the Hi-Hog tub, alley and
squeeze we are no longer getting all beat up. It's easier and safer as we do everything from the outside of the alley. We really like
the ease of adjustment on the S-Alley as we work with all different sizes of cattle. The auto headgate on the P.A. Squeeze is excellent,
I wouldn't have anything else. Several very knowledgeable cattle people have seen our Hi-Hog system work and have commented
‘That's the best system we’ve ever seen & we've seen them all'. If someone is looking for a working system or a squeeze
Hi-Hog is the one. Bob & Barb Marx, SZ Bar Farms
Bozeman, Mt
We raise seedstock for a bucking bull string registered with the Rodeo Stock Registry of North America. For us the most important
consideration is the safety of our animals and our handlers. Hi-Hog’s equipment is user friendly, sturdy, stout, and safe. When
our Hi-Hog system was delivered we started knocking down our old lead up alley at noon and by 2:00pm we had the Hi-Hog system
set-up and had sorted and tagged 25 head of Brahman-Cross calves, cows and bulls ranging from 200 lbs to 1800lbs, and
loaded out 5 head. Brad O'Leary, Maple Key Cattle Co.
Woodstock, On / Weatherford, Tx
Several years ago I bought a Hi-Hog squeeze chute. Since then I've purchased the Hi-Hog palpation cage, S-alley, a funnel crowding
tub and a number of panels and gates. I'm extremely happy with everything; and so is my technician, my vet, and anyone else
who has seen it. I work my cattle on my own and I can't afford to get hurt. That's why I bought a Hi-Hog system. After looking at
a lot of other systems I could see there was no comparison for safety, accessibility, or strength. Whether I'm performing breeding/AI
work or dehorning and castrating, this system adjusts smoothly and quietly to do the job at hand. I am really pleased and
impressed with this equipme Marg Kerr, Kervan Farms
Milford, On
I bought a Hi-Hog tub and alley system and everything about it is good. My son is a vet & he says it's the one to have. The funnel
tub & double gate alone makes it superior to others. You only need one guy to run the whole thing. I would recommend Hi-
Hog to anyone considering a working system or a squeeze chute. Willard Hjartarson
Cut Bank, MT
It used to take a day and a half to work our 1200 head cow/calf operation. Since we put in our Hi-Hog tub and ‘S'-Alley it takes
less than 5 hours and it is a lot less stressful for the animals and the men.
Ron Terry: Ranch Hand, 3L Cattle Company (1200 head cow/calf)
Naicam, Sk
We have a 200 head commercial Simmental and Angus beef
herd. When it came time to replace our handling facility we
went with Hi-Hog. We find that with this equipment we can
work efficiently and safely and cattle handle much easier.
William and Rena Swiderski
Bonnyville, Ab
We needed the most sturdy heavy-duty panels that
money could buy. After looking at all the competitive
products, we chose Hi-Hog - simply because they are the
best. We couldn't be happier with the quality.
