Scandinavian Environmental Label
Svanen – the swan – is a Scandinavian environmental label, and at the same
time Denmark’s official environmental label. You will find it on a large number
of other products from the Nordic countries.
Most Varde wood stoves have the Swan environmental label. We were the
first to be awarded the Swan environmental label, therefore we have been
working to these requirements longer than others and ensures:
l reduced particle and carbon emissions
l that you are not adding to the greenhouse effect by choosing wood as a fuel
l that your wood stove is highly efficient
l and that your wood stove is free of heavy metals

many years. The following section gives you practical tips that you should
follow to ensure top performance from your purchase.

design and technology. From a technological point of view this means that best possible combustion in
a Varde wood stove today is vastly different from 10 to 15 year old stoves.
If your stove smells, or if soot builds up, this is probably due to incorrect use. Check your chimney
– the smoke should be “white or invisible”.
Too little air prevents clean burning; the wood stove becomes dirty and large quantities of particles
are emitted into the atmosphere. For this reason, you should always use smaller dry sticks to light the
fire and wait until they have burnt down before putting on larger pieces of dry wood with a diameter
of 6-8 cm.
Watch the flames and do not reduce the air flow until the flames start to turn blue.
Use a small quantity of dry wood wherever possible. Over fuelling your stove will not improve its performance.
On the contrary, it is just a waste of wood.
Six steps for optimum burning in a modern wood stove:

This ensures a perfect layer of embers for refuelling
and the wood catches fire more easily.

wood Wood is a renewable, living source of heating that you can enjoy
in a forest and in the comfort of your own home. If you follow a couple of
simple recommendations on choosing and lighting firewood, you can safely
enjoy the warmth provided by your wood stove.
l Wood shrinks up to 10 % while drying.
l Only cover the top layer of your woodpile.
l Wood will only dry outdoors between April and September.
l Knock two pieces of wood together – if they sound “brittle” and “hollow”,
the wood is dry.
l Bring your firewood into the house at least 12 hours before burning.
l Never use coated wood or driftwood; never use waste

Systematic lighting and use guarantee more satisfaction
with your wood stove. Clean glass and a clean
combustion chamber are visible proof of correct fuelling
with dry wood.
Please note! Use only dry, chopped wood. Damp wood
will spit and hiss as it burns because the moisture content
has to be removed by the fire before it burns properly.
Excessive quantities of wood increase the risk of overheating.
If you keep to these 6 simple steps, you will not only
improve your wood stove’s efficiency, and keep the
glass elements clean, you will also help to protect the
environment.
