October 2012
If you've visited the winery in the past few months, you may have noticed
that we're quite busy in the tasting room. What you probably didn't notice is
the flurry of activity that's been going on in the production facility as we've
been hard at work with this year's harvest.
The 2012 harvest will be remembered around the region as one marked by
early ripening (grape varietals were 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule on
average) with excellent fruit quality. This summer's warm, dry weather kept
yields down, which led to more highly concentrated flavors and sugars in
the grapes. We're thrilled at the potential that we're seeing from the wines
of this vintage at an early stage.
Specific to Montezuma, we'll remember this harvest as one where we
experimented with a lot of varietals and wine making styles that we either
hadn't used in a while or hadn't ever used, so look out for some new
products to come over the course of the next year. I think I can speak for
the whole wine making team when I say that the long hours and hard work
that go hand-in-hand with this time of year are all worth it, and that it is
quite rewarding to see these products develop from fruit on the vine to wine
in your glass.
Cheers,
Coming to a location near you soon...
Great news for Hidden Marsh Distillery fans. In another 6 months we will be able to offer samples and sales of our
distilled products at various events and festivals.
This past week, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation that will allow licensed farm distilleries to sell their liquor
at the New York State Fair, recognized county fairs, and not-for-profit farmers' markets. This new law will help local farms
to grow by providing distilleries with the same access to marketing opportunities currently allowed to licensed wineries,
farm wineries, and farm breweries.
"Farm distilleries and the agricultural sector play a major role in New York State's economy," Governor Cuomo said. "By
easing restrictions on farm di stilleries and permitting tastings and sales outside of their premises, we are giving these
distilleries an equal chance to compete in the industry and a better opportunity to reach new customers
and grow their businesses. This in turn will offer a needed boost to the state and local economies,
while allowing New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy products of the Empire State."
Currently farm distilleries, which are required to primarily use New York State agricultural products in their New York
State labeled liquors, are allowed to sample and sell their products only on their distillery premises. On the other
hand, farm breweries, farm wineries, and licensed wineries are not subject to these restrictions and are allowed to
sample and sell their New York State labeled products at fairs and markets across the state.
This means that we will now be able to get our products out to more people who have not had a chance to
experience them at the distillery. The law will be effective in 180 days.
