FALL 2012
ONE OF A KIND
Twelve years or so ago, I wanted to
play bridge at Westmount Seniors
with Jessie which meant buying a
membership in Edmonton Marigold.
We had lots of fun playing bridge
weekly and enjoyed it immensely,
and that is all we were interested
in doing.
I believe it was in 2003 and we were
in Wetaskiwin and Rollie Ulmer was
Message from the President
there asking for help putting on the
2005 Winter Games in Edmonton
and to get hold of him. Well, that
sounded like fun so I got hold of
Rollie and went from helping at the
Games to Director of Food Services.
Immediately after the Games I was
talked into taking over the job of
Secretary from Valerie for a few
months to then taking over Rollie’s
job as President and I am still here.
Do I regret calling Rollie in 2003???
Absolutely not. Have I been busy….
absolutely, but what Rollie has
taught me is all about helping,
mentoring, caring, learning and to
realize that things do not get done
in this organization by themselves.
It takes dedicated people and that is
certainly what Rollie has been along
with his wife Valerie.
Rollie is a rare find, and I for one
could not begin to tell you how much
I have appreciated his mentoring me
over the years, how much he has
taught me or how many times I went
to Rollie for advice. What he advised
me had to be what I should do, as
coming from Rollie it had to be right.
Rollie is a 25 year member. He has
served as a director in one capacity or
another on the board of Edmonton
Marigold, including nine years as
President, 18 years as casino
manager, 19 years as ice curling
coordinator and 16 years as slo-pitch
coordinator. Rollie also was the
Provincial coordinator for the
Provincial Casinos for ten years.
For health reasons Rollie has had to
resign from his commitments. So
many people who rely on his opinions
and wisdom will miss him. I don’t
think there is anyone in any Zone
where most of you have not run
into Rollie in one capacity or another.
He is truly one of a kind and I
will certainly miss him at all our
functions. For now, telephone calls
or a coffee will have to do.
Cultural Competitions – 2013 Update!
Hi to all you artists, writers and crafters. The 2013 Summer
Games in Westlock/Barrhead are coming and along with
it the Arts & Crafts and Creative Writing competition!
I have sat in on some of the planning meetings and I must
say the Westlock/Barrhead Games Committee is working
hard and have a real good start for what will be another
good Summer Games. They are a very enthusiastic
committee, they have all their chairpersons chosen and
I can tell you the Arts & Crafts and Creative Writing show
and display will be at the Barrhead Curling Rink.
We the Alberta 55 plus members should be planning now
what we will be entering. For information to members
that have never entered your works, all the new categories
are decided and can be found below this article.
(For a more in-depth description of each category, visit
our webpage at www.alberta55plus.ca). Each Zone has
an Arts and Crafts coordinator that will be available to
answer any questions. Each Zone will also have their own
competition and the two winning entries in each category
will be transported to Barrhead, then, returned to the Zone
after the “Games” are over.
This is my invitation to you, get involved, go to our web
site and get the categories, think about what you can
produce this coming winter and enter our Arts & Crafts
and Creative Writing competition this next summer.
I look forward to the competition, to meeting all you
new artists, crafters and creative writers, and I’ll see
you in Barrhead.
Bring A Friend!
As you have all heard, we need our membership numbers
to increase. The mandate of the Alberta 55 Plus Games
is to allow all Albertans over the age of 55+ to compete
in the Games process (ie – compete in a viable Zone
playoff). There are hundreds of thousands of potential
participants in our Games, yet our membership numbers
have been stagnant at around 3500 per year. This is not
acceptable, and needs to increase! The easiest way to
do this is to simply bring a friend to a Zone playoff! We
all must have at least one or two active acquaintances
who would love to come out and participate in a Cribbage
match or a Curling bonspiel. We are all members of
this organization for one reason – it is FUN! So why not
spread the word and spread the joy? As soon as you
stop reading this page, we challenge you to pick up the
phone or turn on your computer, and invite a friend to
come along with you! It is that easy!
Did you know?
• Alberta 55 plus was built on the backs of volunteers
• It is still the only all-encompassing volunteer Sport
Association for 55+ members in Canada
• Host communities for the Games rely on over 700
volunteers to stage each event
• Host communities will spend over $1 million to
stage a Games
• The Games activities are diverse, from very active
to more sedentary
• The Technical requirements of all activities in each
Games are reviewed through a joint committee
composed of Alberta 55 plus members (10) and
ASRPWF officials (4)
• When you represent your Zone, you are representing
your community, your county, your home. And we all
like to brag about our area as being the best one in
this wonderful Province!
• The City of Calgary and its world-class WINSPORT
facilities are waiting for us in February 2013!
Online Auction
It’s Back!
October 29 - November 7 at 12:00 Noon only at www.alberta55plus.ca
Our annual fundraising Online Auction is back for 2012, and
we need your support!
Unfortunately, the support from our membership (outside of
a select few hard workers) has waned tremendously over the
past couple of years for this auction. Last year, just over 70
people total actually looked at the website and put in a bid
– 70 people out of over 3500 members, or less than 2%!
Also we must remember that many of those who did bidding
(such as members’ children) are not even 55+, so we
are talking about a tremendously small percentage of our
members who could even take 10 minutes out of their day
to browse the website to see if there is any interest.
When I started with this great organization in 2007, we were
just wrapping up the first raffle, which was a success, raising
over $12,000 in profit. The Board of Directors decided to
pursue a second raffle in 2008, and despite hours upon hours
of work, this raffle lost money. Raffles are inherently risky, as
you must purchase prizes and sell enough tickets to at least
cover the cost, or you end up in the red. The main cry we
heard from our membership is that “we don’t want to sell
tickets!” It was too time consuming, and many people
weren’t comfortable approaching others to sell tickets.
The pushback from the membership was palpable, and
we were asked to look at other ways of gaining revenue.
With the recession and subsequent government cutbacks in
2008 and 2009, our Sport Association grant funding was cut
back 18%, the same as all other Sport Associations in Alberta.
This represented a loss in revenue of $13,000 per year. For
a non-profit association, this was extremely significant.
“Why not ask the Government for more money?” This was
a common question I heard posed at many Zones throughout
the province at events I attended. We are extremely fortunate
to receive ASRPWF grant funding in the amount of over
$56,000 per year, as well as hosting a Casino every two
years earning over $70,000 (or $35,000 per year). All told, we
receive over $90,000 per year in funding from the provincial
government, as well as their tremendous monetary support
in hosting each Games – greater than $800,000 in funding,
salaries and expenses for each Games. So my statement to
those who ask about “simply asking for more ‘free’ money”
is – I think we are darn lucky to receive what we do!
At the 2009 AGM, when our membership fee as increased
to its current rate of $30 per year ($2.50 per month), many
in attendance talked about donating items as a way to raise
money. “We don’t want to sell tickets” was again heard over
and over throughout the proceedings. So, in 2009, we
launched our first Online Auction fundraiser which was a
success. Nobody had to sell tickets – a few key workers in
each Zone solicited donations from businesses and individuals
and the cost (and risk) to run the event was minimal. We
made over $7000 the first year.
In 2010, we had our most successful auction, with over
$9000 profit. In 2011, the excitement and buy-in from the
membership came crashing back to Earth. As mentioned,
only 70 people took part in the bidding, yet we still managed
a $7000 profit.
The point of this article is simple – to stay viable as an
Association, and to continue to provide such benefits such
as this newsletter you are reading, we need our members’
help! Not only in participating in the Auction process, but in
soliciting donations as well! We are a registered charity, so
every person or business who donates an item receives a
tax receipt for the retail value of that donation.
Each one of you reading this article has a child, relative,
neighbor or friend who works for or owns a business. Most
places aren’t willing to donate cash, but they are more than
willing to donate an item or product. Golf courses, restaurants,
movie theaters, hardware stores, spas, hotels, etc. – they
have all donated items to us in the past and are examples
of what have been donated this year! Gift certificates are
extremely popular – and think of the Christmas shopping
you’ll get done early!
If you have an item to donate, or think you can solicit one,
please contact me at info@alberta55plus.ca or 403-803-9852
for more information. We are only accepting items with a value
of over $50, and they must be new. This isn’t a garage sale – it
is an online auction fundraiser! And it is FUN – be sure to take
a peek sometime from October 29 – November 7!
ZONE 1 The Sunny South
Zone 1 Fall Report for 2012
Zone 1 has had a pretty busy season during the beautiful
summer weather. The conflicting times for the Alberta
55 plus fun days activities and activities for local functions
makes scheduling events challenging. There are many
communities that are making plans to celebrate their
100 year Anniversary. The upside to these on going
anniversary celebrations is that there will be some good
potential candidates to join our Alberta 55 plus organization
with experience in planning and organizing.
The online auction for Alberta 55 plus is scheduled for
the month of November. For 10 days this fall, bidding
on donated items is fun to partake in and it is similar to
bargain hunting at a public auction except the final bidding
could be made in the last few minutes of the 10th day.
However, our Zone 1 members must work hard at finding
donated items for sale so that they can be used in the
online Auction. The proceeds of the online Auction is
used in funding the Alberta 55 plus publication of three
newsletters per year.
The Zone 1 Winter Games Playoffs will begin playing
Profile of
Thomas B. Stevenson
Tom started to play Golf by accident with his Brotherin-law
in Dawson Creek in 1962. Tom was scheduled to
play a game of softball that afternoon. The Brother-in-law
suggested that they could get in 9 holes of golf in the
morning and that they could use the one set of clubs.
This was Tom’s initiation into the game of Golf. As the
Brother-in-law was tall, Tom had to choke down on the
shaft on the clubs and he bogied all 9 holes for a score
of 45. As Tom was now hooked on this new sport that
he went to the McLeod Store and he bought ½ set of
clubs for $40.
Tom has played golf in the Southern Alberta Summer
Games and occasionally in the Alberta 55 Plus Games
since 1985. Since 1999, Stevenson has had a continuous
membership in the Alberta 55 plus organization and he
has played golf in the Zone 1 Playoffs every second year
including the year 2011. Upon qualifying in the Provincial
5
scheduled events posted everywhere on our “Bring
a Friend” stand-alone cards at all our events and also
we have schedules posted on our website
www.sunnysouth55plus.com. To be sure that our
message is remembered, a reminder of the Games is
needed by sending out posters, followed up by making
phone call inquiries. By having more participants entered
in each of the events, the athletes would enjoy playing
in a more meaningful competition.
The Provincial Winter Games will be held in Calgary in
February, 2013. Participants that live over 100km from
Calgary will have their transportation, lodging and meals
provided for at a nominal fee of $100 for four days of
fun and friendly competition. Buy your Alberta 55 plus
membership now and participate in the Zone 1 Playoffs
and the Provincial Playoffs and enjoy meeting old and
Fall Report - continued
Join for the Fun, Renew for the Friendship
During the non-Games year, BCSSS member Clubs
hosted many activities for Alberta 55 plus members and
non-members. It was a great time to try new activities
and meet friends once again.
The Cochrane Seniors-on-the-Bow Club hosted a Friendly
Fun Curling Bonspiel on March 5. A lot of fun was had by
all with new members joining Alberta 55 plus and many
members renewing their membership.
The Chestermere Mind, Body and Sprit Expo was held
on March 17. Over 200 people came through the Expo and
BCSSS spread the word about Alberta 55 plus and the
upcoming playoffs for the Winter and Summer Games.
The Cochrane Seniors-on-the-Bow Club hosted a Friendly
Fun Day on April 4. Some of the activities were Bridge,
Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Euchre, Table Shuffleboard and
a demonstration of Pickle Ball. There were approximately
78 participants and it is always enjoyable to meet new
people and potential new members to both Alberta 55
plus and to the Friendly Fun games. The day concluded
with a Spaghetti Dinner and an excellent presentation on
the Masters Games.
The KIK Senior Citizens Club in Irricana hosted a Friendly
Zone 3 (Calgary) hosted a Carpet Bowling Challenge Cup
on May 17. Zone 2 was represented by a 55+ and 70+
Team from the Airdrie Over 50 Club.
The Spring Festival was held in Strathmore on June 2.
We attracted many interested people to our table, or we
thought we did. Strathmore Victim Services were at the
table next to us and they were serving cake, and we
know how much seniors love to eat.
Enjoying the Friendly
Fun Bocce Tournament
in Chestermere.
Chestermere hosted a Friendly Fun Bocce Tournament on
July 14, at the Chestermere Recreation Centre. Bill and
Adeline Fedyk were given a challenge from the 4 other
teams that participated. As Adeline stated, it was good
practice and warm-up for their trip to the Canada Games.
"On Saturday, July 14th, the Zone 2 Bocce Friendly Fun
Games were held in Chestermere and hosted by Holly and
Brian Wood. We had five teams of doubles and played five
games, had a delicious lunch prepared by Holly and enjoyed
excellent weather, no hot sun, no rain, just a pleasant day all
around. Nancy Brazier and Marilyn Conrad scored the most
points. This will probably conclude our Friendly Fun Games
for this summer,” said BCSSS Secretary, Adeline Fedyk.
BCSSS has had a very busy 4 months and I hope everyone
enjoyed participating in the many activities hosted by our
Clubs. It was, however, disappointing to have to cancel
some activities due to a lack of interest. It takes many hours
organizing these activities and a ‘BIG Thank you’ goes out
to our members and volunteers for their dedication and
commitment in hosting these activities. We all want to see
these activities continue and expand not only in the
non-games years but during every year. Keep active and
stay healthy.
A Zone 3 profile of Del Irwin:
I was born in a small community in Northern Manitoba -
the eldest of 9 children. Our father was a farmer and
freighter and none of us wanted to follow in his footsteps,
so we all gravitated to the big cities. I moved to Winnipeg
and then to Regina where I worked at the Hudson Bay
Company Store for 20 years. I moved to Calgary in 1974
and continued to work at The Bay for a few more years
where I retired.
I joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 264 in 1976
where I played crib, shuffleboard and became the President
of those leagues for 5 years. I joined the Ladies Auxiliary
branch in 2007 and as a member I worked at the Stampede
Legion events every year - among other great activities.
As a member of Alberta 55 plus and winner of the crib
and shuffleboard tournaments, I went on a lot of great
trips to places such as Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat,
Lethbridge, St. Albert and Fort McMurray to name a few.
I have enjoyed all my years with the 55 Plus organization
and will continue to be a part of their great events!
Fun Day Picnic
The Zone 4 Board decided it was time
Fun Day BBQ was formed. With the
use of the Pine Lake Hub there was
plenty of room to demonstrate several
activities for our members and guests.
So with help from the Technical Director
developed. Learn and try a new activity
was the theme of the event. Activities
offered were Bocce, Carpet Bowling,
Euchre, Horseshoes, Military Whist,
Scrabble, Table Shuffleboard and Washer
Toss which proved to be a real hit with
everyone. 70 members and guests
attended and tried their hand at the
activities. Board members and some
very knowledgeable members hosted
each activity. The weather cooperated
with a cloudy morning and then a very
After the final game, the manager of the team, Burt
Brown, was quoted as saying: “Think about it. This is
amazing, playing hockey at our age!”
The Senior Lancers have been regular visitors to this
tournament for many years. This year they funded and donated
a trophy for the 80+ class for the national
21
championship. “I guess we’re not very good sports for
donating the trophy, then winning it,” quipped Benny
Stein, coach of the team.
The 2012 Victoria Players Tournament attracted hundred
of players 55 and over eager to compete. They came
from the Lower Mainland, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Eastern Canada, U.S.A., and Japan.
The Sherwood Park Senior Lancers are only one of many
teams who still have a real love for the game of hockey.
Life Membership
Award For Betty Bryant
Elizabeth (Betty) Bryant, of Stony Plain, has been a
continuous member of Alberta 55 plus for 30 years, the
first Zone 5 member to achieve this status.
Thirty years ago, when she and her husband, Bert, joined
55 plus, they entered the “old time dancing” competitions,
a former Games event. Through the years, Betty has played
snooker and floor curling, and she is still line dancing every
Friday at the Spruce Grove Pioneer Centre.
Betty has won medals at the provincial Games, and says
that she just likes to keep active. At one time, Betty even
tried creative writing. She wrote the poem, The Olympian,
which was such a hit that she was invited to recite it at the
2007 Pep Rally for Zone 5, and it appeared on the inside
cover of the 2007 Fall Senior Moments magazine.
In June, Betty and her floor curling friends had a special
coffee break at the Pioneer Centre when Darlene Hunneman,
Zone 5 president, arrived with a beautifully decorated carrot
cake to celebrate her achievement and to present her with
a 30-year pin and a Life Membership Award.
Congratulations and thanks for your years of support, Betty.
Sixty Years Together for Rita and Frank Kelly
Frank Kelly is the new Area 4 Director for Zone 5
Frank and Rita met in Stony Plain, where Frank was starting
a banking career with the CIBC. Frank soon gave up his
banking job and joined Gulf Oil at Stettler, looking after a
production facility and loading tank cars. Rita and Frank
kept in touch, and on August 3, 1952, they were married.
The next summer they were joined by a baby girl, soon
followed by two little brothers.
The oilfield was expanding rapidly, and promotions came
quickly. The Kellys lived in Stettler, Big Valley, and Rosetown,
Saskatchewan. Returning to Stettler, they built their first
house, a DIY project.
In 1959, the Swan Hills oilfield was just being developed,
and Frank and family soon moved north and became pioneers
in the new town. However, after Frank became Production
Superintendent for the Edmonton area, the family moved
to St. Albert, and that really became their home.
Later on, Frank realized that an engineering degree was
required if he was to progress with Gulf Oil. He spoke to
the Dean of Engineering and was told, “You will find it very
difficult and you will probably fail.” Undaunted, he enrolled
in the U of A at the age of 38 and graduated with the gold
medal for his class.
23
After graduation, Frank and family moved to Calgary for
a job in the head office. When the National Energy Plan
came along and the oil companies were downsizing, Frank
started looking for a place to retire. He liked the Okanagan
but Rita wanted to retire near her family in Stony Plain.
As Frank puts it, “I get one vote and Rita gets two
votes,” so they chose Stony Plain.
They built their retirement home, another DIY project, on
a quarter-section of untouched land in the hills north of
Stony Plain. They spent 20 years there, involved in model
airplane clubs, rural crime watch, bluebird trails, and lots
of family events. After Frank began developing heart
problems, they moved into Spruce Grove. Following
surgery and a return to health, Frank and Rita joined the
Golden Age Club, then Alberta 55 plus, and began to
enjoy the many activities offered. Frank was a medalwinning
entrant in the 2011 Summer Games, taking part
in an activity that he says “we get better at as we get
older – story telling.” (i.e., Creative Writing)
Frank’s 80th birthday party was held at the model airplane
field, which he greatly enjoyed, but Rita wouldn’t hear of
celebrating their 60th anniversary there. And where is
this one going? “Remember,” Frank says, “Rita has two
votes and I have one.”

With the wet spring and summer, the different shades of
green are awesome, along with the variety of mushrooms
down in my lawn this year. But enough with my problems.
Replacements have been found for various coordinator and
director positions for Zone 6. Eleanore Frend has accepted
to be our secretary for the next two years. Len Stevens,
assistant Downhill Ski coordinator, has taken on more
work and is now our new Director at Large. Lola McNeil
has stepped down as scrabble coordinator. Lola has been
very active in Zone 6 for the past 15 years. Thank you
A large card was crafted by Eleanor Frend with members
writing their comments and expressing their appreciation
to Rollie at the medal presentation June 27. A tribute was
paid to Rolllie with heart warming speeches by close friends
he made as President, Past President, coordinator, casino
A reminder to all members who are interested in
participating in the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games which
Several months ago Strathcona County has put in a bid
to host the 2014 Canada Games, as described in the
Edmonton Journal. The event is to take place in Sherwood
Park. Most venues will be within walking distance of their
hotels. I have seen their presentation booklet and it is
excellent. This will be presented during the Games in Sydney.
Activity Director’s Report
As activity director, it was my privilege to attend or
compete and help out in some cases with the summer fun
games. The Marigold members seem to thrive on being
active and having fun. We did have one day in which the
weatherman turned on the poor golfers, but a good
amount of them persevered through the lousy weather.
What troopers!
The rest of the events went very well with some members
trying some of the events for the first time. Now they know
there are other things that they could be having fun with.
And that’s really what the fun games are all about… trying
new things!
June 5, 2012 at Legends G & C Club. It was very different
from last year where the mosquitoes were taking blood
samples and the geese were fertilizing the grass and
greens. In 2012, no mosquitoes and the goose fertilizer
washed away by heavy rains. Out of 75 paid entries, only
about 40 finished the 18 holes. Several players claimed
their irons flew further than the golf ball on many occasions.
The Lighter Side...
There was a bit of confusion at the store this morning.
When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier
said “strip down, facing me.” Making a mental note to
complain to my member of Parliament about security
running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the
hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found
out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been
asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to
make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer!
ZONE 7 The Lakeland
President’s Message
Greetings to everyone.
I have taken the job of President for Zone 7.
Anyone living anywhere in Zone 7 cannot
say there is nothing to do. There are all types
of Challenges and Fun Days throughout the
year. A bowling tournament in Cold Lake
turned out great, Fort McMurray is a far outpost
to all our clubs. They invited us to a Fun Day,
so we gather a bus load of participants from
all over Zone 7 to travel the distance to Fort
McMurray. We had a wonderful time including
a great Banquet.
We just had a Fun Day at Vilna with three
activities: Cribbage, Bocce and Military Whist.
We had a great turnout and everyone had a
great time.
In August we will be holding our Mini Games
in Lac La Biche. I am sure we well have another
great turnout again for these games as always.
That is what we call Seniors in action.
I feel very proud of the Board we have to
Zone 7 Fall Article
Well it seems like only yesterday I was sitting here in
front of my keyboard knocking out a spring article now
it’s time to do a fall issue article. First let me made a few
corrections from my spring article: under the article on
Second Vice Victor Ouellette it should have read “Victor
and Colleen”, not “Joe and Colleen were off to the
Canada Games.” Sorry Vic and Colleen. Under 2012
Board picture it should have been “Susan Nay”, not
“Susan May.”
In the past few months Zone 7 has been keeping it
members very busy, as our President noted no one
should ever say they are bored with nothing to do.
We tried a few new things this year to help keep our
members happy, with Cold Lake hosting a bowling
tournament on the 18th of April. They had teams from
all over Zone 7. We also had a Fun Day Bus trip to Fort
McMurray on 16th - 18th of May with 28 members
going on this trip. From all reports they all had a lot of
fun. Here are a few pictures of this trip (all taken by
After three days of fun it was back on the bus for the
Our next event was a Fun Day in Vilna. There was a
very good turnout to this event. They had Cribbage,
Bocce & Military Whist. Sorry no pictures on this event.
By the time you get to read this article Zone 7 would
have held the following events: A Fun Day in Elk Point
with a golf tournament, and the big event for the summer
will be Zone 7’s Mini Games in Lac La Biche. As you can
see we in Lakeland Senior Games Association Zone 7 are
keeping busy and happy with something for everyone.
As many of you know I have had a health problem
and have not been able to get out to many of the events.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all those
Strengthening the Member Pool
What it’s all about!
Everyone knows we don’t get better with age, well,
everyone but me. I always wanted to hit the golf ball a
long ways and now, thanks to age, I hit the ball out of
sight with every club, sometimes even my putter.
Thank the lord for Alberta 55 plus. It gives us a somewhat
level playing field to continue on playing. But then again
maybe it’s not the lord that gave us Alberta 55 plus. If that
is the case, who gave us Alberta 55 plus, and if we do find
that person how do we ensure that it stays a viable entity
and we continue to play on that level playing field? It took
awhile but I did figure it out. I – we are responsible for
Alberta 55 plus continuing, flourishing and expanding.
We make it happen.
Zone 8 has 2 big initiatives going to strengthen and
increase our member pool. Our Challenge Cups continue
to give our members things to do in the off games year.
Our Zone Fun Day continues to get bigger and better.
This year, Mary Sutherland, our Grande Prairie Area
representative, is planning an awesome day for our zone
on August 18. Members will come from all regions of
our zone to participate. Members get a chance to try
pickle ball, floor shuffleboard bocce and many more
Alberta 55+ events.
Our new initiative is to target area travel. Our zone will
implement a Zone 8 Passport. The passport will have
boxes for all our areas. As our members travel to different
areas to participate in Challenge Cups, their passports
will be stamped with a symbol of the area they are now
in. Should a member have 5 of the 9 stamped he or she
will be eligible for a prize drawn at our zone AGM. Each
area will have a prize so there will be 9 prizes to be drawn.
We added a little twist to the passport by including a bonus
box. Should you bring a new member to a Challenge Cup
Event, your passport will be stamped in the bonus area
and should your name be drawn for an area prize, you
will also get a bonus prize. You must personally put your
stamped passport into the draw box at the AGM and you
must be in attendance, at the AGM, to collect you prize.
Faust Floor Shufleboard 2012
Zone 8 realizes that we are responsible for putting members
into the seats and we are on a mission to do just that.
ZONE 8 Mighty Peace Sports and Recreation
Zone 8 well represented at the 2012 Canada Games!
Seventeen strong (and their significant others in many
cases) are making the trek from northern Alberta to Cape
Breton, Nova Scotia, to represent Alberta at the 2012
Canada Games at the end of August. Many will extend
the trip to make a family holiday out of this opportunity
to visit this beautiful part of Canada (and perhaps some
places along the way as well for those driving out!).The
talented group includes ice curlers, runners, swimmers,
cribbage players, bowlers and golfers (and more!), proving
once again that Zone 8 ‘can do’! Some of the participants
are making their first appearance at the Canada Games,
while others are long-time attenders, returning to once
again enjoy the camaraderie and sportsmanship of these
games and renewing friendships made over the years
from across Canada. Making Zone 8 proud are: Dorothy
Calvert, Velvet Davies, Leo Dawson, Merlin Estabrooks,
Norma Estabrooks, Keith Fraser, Lloyd Gauthier, Mary-
Helen Hopkins, Darlene Isley, Juanita Knight, Joe Larsback,
Joyce McRoberts, Josephine Salmond, Betty Sinclair,
Dorothy Sudnik, Dorothy Tetreau and Floris White. All in
training over the summer, we’re sure - we’re rooting for
them and wish them good luck (and good weather!).
Challenge Cups
Challenge Cups have continued to be a popular activity
during the winter and spring, even though attendance has
dropped off some with the warmer weather. Floor Curling
in Faust, Floor Shuffleboard in Fairview and 5-Pin Bowling
in Enilda are just a sampling of the activities enjoyed
around the zone!
Mighty Peace 50 plus Activity Fun Day
By the time you are reading this, we will have hosted our
3rd Annual Activity Fun Day on August 18, 2012. Last year
the event was hosted in Wanham, and the very first
Activity Fun Day was hosted in Faust; this year the event
will be held Grande Prairie. We’re trying different locations
to give everyone an opportunity to see Zone 8!
We planned this event in partnership with the Grande
Prairie Golden Age Centre as well as Grande Prairie
Regional College. The Golden Age Centre will be the
home base, hosting most of the events either in the
centre itself or on the grounds (the centre borders on
Muskoseepi Park, so lots of open spaces). Pickle Ball
will be hosted in the gym at Grande Prairie Regional
College. Pickle Ball is relatively new to Grande Prairie,
although there are a few people around town trying to
get it going – we hope this opportunity will give it a boost.
We’re looking for a record-breaking turn-out this year!
Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of the Mighty Peace
Sport and Recreation Association will be held on Saturday,
September 8, 2012 at the Grande Prairie Golden Age
Centre, beginning at 11 a.m. (a lunch will be served!).
Proposed by-law changes will be emailed out to members
for an opportunity for review before the meeting.
Come on out and bring a friend or two!
