We had a great time at our last
Chelsea Flower Show and thank
you for all your support. However,
as you can see we are NOT retiring, just
creating more time in which to indulge my
passion for growing plants some of which
have made it into this catalogue. The white
asphodel (page 6) has long been a stalwart
of our summer border where it flowers with
scarlet poppies and at last we have enough to
sell. Another exciting introduction is the new
range of iris whose official name is almost
longer than they are – miniature tall bearded
iris! These tiny gems are exactly like their
tall counterpart but only 14” tall and totally
in proportion to their stature. We also have
enough to spare of the fine Turkish graveyard iris
I. biliottii (page 23) which I have been growing for some
25 years.
An unintentional consequence of the London Olympics
was a raising of awareness of one of the stalwarts of this
catalogue – Galtonia candicans (page 19) which is also
our stunning cover subject. This, and another of our
introductions, the amazing New Zealand Gladiolus Ruby
(page 18) , featured in the magnificent wild meadow plantings
around the park. I was not a fan of the traditional tall gladiolus
until I saw Plum Tart scattered among the feathery stems
of Gaura at Hyde Hall and had to try it. Here it is equally
at home among blue asters. The third new gladiolus is a
dramatic dwarf scarlet species G.flanniganii.
We have been reworking some of our original shade
borders and have been adding lilies for summer interest after
the snowdrops etc have disappeared. Sweet Surrender
and the deep red martagon were so good we had to
include them (page 29). The rather underrated Roscoea
(page 33) are also at home here and are such rewarding plants,
in flower for nearly all the summer. Other new plants for shade
are the improved colour forms of Helleborus x Hybridus,
better known as H. orientalis (page 19) and the Japanese gem
Helloniopsis orientalis.
Hopefully we have found something to whet your appetite.
Do please check out our new look website and all these and
more are in our online store.
The main autumn catalogue, comprising our comprehensive range of Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus, bulbous Irises etc., is
