FROM THE RECTOR 

O 

n my travels recently, I dropped into a 

branch of a certain major supermarket 

and was surprised to see just how patriotic 

they’d become. I had thought that 

they existed only to squeeze profit out of as many 

producers and consumers as possible, but here they 

were ‘flying the flag’ and the store was awash with red, 

white and blue bunting. 

In almost every aisle, this benevolent retailer offered 

everything the patriotic customer could ask for; from 

a union jack gazebo (with matching chairs) and red, 

white and blue patterned nappies, to sparkly headbands 

and Diamond Jubilee mugs. I was tempted, as 

you would be, by the Jubilee tattoo transfers (on sale 

in the children’s department). Even the breakfast cereals 

joined in – ‘Fuel Britannia’ declared one – and 

dear old Mr Kipling has felt prompted to make some 

‘limited edition’ red, white and blue cakes - ‘a little 

Brit of what you fancy…’ 

(If you want to see how patriotic the supermarkets 

really are, just look at the country of origin for at least 

75% of the above products) 

Looking at the pressures on our communities, rural 

and urban, and the economic realities which underlie 

them, it is hard to sing ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ 

nowadays. As for Britannia ‘ruling the waves’, well it’s 

just not true any more. Yet it is a good thing for us to 

know where we come from and for us to celebrate 

the Diamond Jubilee. In a privatised world, where the 

life-blood and diversity of our local regions and villages 

seems to be draining away, this summer provides an 

opportunity not only to mark the contribution of 

Queen Elizabeth II to the life of our country but, in

doing so, to celebrate our shared values of what it is 

to be British (even if there remain deep inequalities in 

our society as we frequently fail to live these values 

out). 

Over the last 60 years, many would recognise in the 

Queen’s reign both good stewardship and integrity. 

What about us? One obvious way of our being ‘good 

stewards’ is how we, as individuals, help look after the 

environment and to use the resources we’ve been 

given. Collectively, it means that we need our local 

elected representatives, from MPs to parish councillors 

– as well as unelected but powerful bodies like 

the Dartmoor Park National Authority - to operate 

for the ‘greater good’. Together, there is much to 

celebrate, and I hope that you will enjoy taking part in 

the many Jubilee events this month. But together, we 

also have a responsibility to play our part in keeping 

our communities vibrant, supporting the vulnerable, 

celebrating diversity and ensuring the conservation of 

our environment for future generations is kept at the 

top of the agenda. 

Of course, there are some people who cling onto old 

ideas of monarchy and empire (just as some people – 

especially angry atheists – cling onto old ideas of God 

being an angry, male monarch of the controlling, 

bearded variety) and there are others for whom the 

Jubilee celebrations have little appeal. But when it 

comes to marking the Queen’s remarkable 60 years, I 

think, as St Bing of Crosby put it, ‘you’ve got to accentuate 

the positive.’ From South Zeal to Hittisleigh to 

Chagford, let’s ensure that these summer celebrations 

are not just another shallow marketing exercise by 

supermarkets and take the opportunity to invest time 

(and money) in the life and diversity of our villages and 

towns here in ‘England’s green and pleasant land’.

Church hospitality tent 

The catering team for the running of the hospitality tent 

at Chagford Show on Thursday 16 th August is looking 

for helpers again! 

We had an excellent turnout last summer and were 

delighted by everyone's response: please help us to 

achieve the same at this year's show. The tent is run 

by Christians Together in Chagford and District and all 

takings are given to charity after costs. 

Over the years the tent has become increasingly busy: 

we are the only open house for tea and coffee, and just

60 years ago - how the reign started 

Scene: The Naval Signal School 

at East Meon, near Portsmouth, 

November 1951 

I had been summoned by my boss, 

Commander Wells. ‘You are not to 

tell anyone what I am about to tell 

you. Understood?’ 

‘Certainly Sir,’ I replied. 

‘You will shortly be appointed to the 

staff of the Flag Officer, Royal 

Yachts, and will accompany the King 

and Queen on their forthcoming tour 

of Australia and New Zealand.’ 

I was flabbergasted and speechless. 

I had no aristocratic connections, 

rather the reverse as the McCrums 

had come from humble origins in 

Northern Ireland. I wasn’t used to 

moving in such aerated circles. A 

Shaw Savill liner, Gothic, had been 

hired by the Admiralty and converted 

into a super yacht. 

As we sailed away from the UK we 

were hit by the news that the King 

had lung cancer and could not carry 

out the tour. Princess Elizabeth and 

Prince Philip were drafted in as replacements. 

The plan was for Gothic to sail round 

the Cape of Good Hope to Mombasa 

in Kenya where the royals would 

embark, having flown out from UK. 

By the time we reached a steaming

7 th June (no pre-meeting). Bob Pigott has kindly 

agreed to give a talk on ‘The Forgotten Army 1946- 

1948’ (Palestine Conflict). This promises to be a most 

interesting talk. Non-members most welcome. Meetings 

also on 4 th October and 6 th December

The Princess and Prince Philip were 

due on board the next day, 5 th February. 

At 1512 hours I received an 

‘Emergency’ message from the Admiralty 

in London. 

‘Telephone communications 

required now between General 

Browning and Horsley.’ 

Browning was one of the King’s top 

officials at Buckingham Palace and 

Horsley was the senior official accompanying 

the Princess. I feared 

the worst. There had been a sad 

photograph of a gaunt King waving 

goodbye to Princess Elizabeth as 

she left for the tour. 

If Horsley had been on board we 

could have contacted him immediately 

by means of the high-powered 

telephone we carried, but he wasn’t. 

He was up a tree in the Game Park 

with Princess Elizabeth and Prince 

Philip. How to reach him urgently? 

Tree Tops was an adjunct of a 

nearby hotel where you could watch 

the wild life but no one had given us 

the telephone number as their visit 

was so short. Did Kenya have Directory 

Enquiries? I tried the local exchange. 

‘Can you give me the number of the 

hotel in the National Wild Life Park?’

‘Where you say?’ 

‘NATIONAL WILD LIFE PARK,’ I 

said, slowly and clearly. 

‘OK, I know, I will check.’ After some 

delay: ‘Here is number.’ 

I got through to the hotel. 

‘Is Mr Horsley there?’ 

‘No, he is up at Tree Tops.’ 

‘Please send a runner quickly and 

tell him there is an urgent telephone 

message from London for him.’ 

A long delay ensued and I delivered 

Browning’s message to him. Horsley 

made contact with Buckingham 

Palace from the hotel. He broke the 

news that the King had died to 

Prince Philip, who then gave the sad 

news to Princess Elizabeth that she 

was now Queen. The next day she 

flew home as Queen Elizabeth II. 

Thus was the new reign born.

Desert Island Discs comes 

to Dartmoor 

Maggie Clark will be in conversation with Paul Seaton- 

Burn at the Victory Hall, South Zeal on Friday 13 th 

July at 7.30pm. 

As Paul Seaton-Burn prepares to be cast away on a 

desert island we hear the eight discs, book and luxury 

he has chosen to help him while away the hours of solitude. 

While in reality we have no wish to send him anywhere, 

this is an opportunity to find out a little more 

about our new Team Rector. What makes him tick? 

What music does he like and what can we glean of his

Chagford Carnival Two Hills Race will be held on Monday

competition, to be judged after the race, and children’s

ometimes, when writing an article such as this 

I have to construct what I am going to write in 

my head – the bare bones of the story, so to 

speak. What better then than to start off with a 

story about bones? St Swithin’s Day falls of 15 th July 

when, it is said, if it rains on that day it will rain for 40 

days. The origin of this story concerns the movement 

of St Swithin’s bones from their former positioning in a 

nearby churchyard into the newly consecrated cathedral 

at Winchester in 970AD. St Swithin is said to have 

objected to this and in effect ‘went’ on what became his 

day so strongly that the rain lasted for 40 days. Folklore 

belief then adopted this event and carried it down 

to the present day, although it is not always totally reliable, 

but at least we know that AD970 had a wet summer. 

Rain on St Swithin’s Day ‘christens’ the apples 

and the old rhyme says: 

‘Till St Swithin’s Day be past, 

The apples be not fit to taste.’ 

Apples are an everyday sight in the 

greengrocer’s shop and there is 

general understanding that they 

were brought to this country by the 

Romans when they invaded. Their 

origin goes back much further than 

the Romans, however, as it is understood 

that the first apples grew 

in the region known as Kazakhstan 

thousands of years ago, although 

they did not look like the apples we know today. Trade 

routes from this area, such as the Silk Road, brought 

goods into Europe using camels as the beast of burden 

who consumed the wild apples along the way as part of 

their diet, although the apple pips were not transported 

westward as the camel digestive system consumed 

them. It was not until the horse was domesticated and 

used to transport goods that the now undigested pips 

were transported having passed through the horse, 

thus taking the seeds westward, eventually to Rome 

and thence as goods by invaders into Britain.

Walnuts, which originated in the same area, were also 

transported into Europe by the same traders but as 

food for them along the way. Now both these fruits are 

found all over the world. 

Apples are the subject of much superstition, beginning 

in the winter when the trees are dormant with the practice 

of ‘wassailing’ or serenading the tree to encourage 

a good crop. Different wassailing rhymes are sung to 

the tree depending on which part of the country you are 

in. Sometimes guns were fired in the air, or the tree 

was whipped if it had not borne a good crop the previous 

autumn. The orchard party would also toast the 

tree in cider, pouring some onto the ground around the 

roots to encourage it. I suspect that 

by the time the orchard was fully 

covered with songs and much 

toasting the evening was enjoyed 

by all but remembered by only a 

few. The National Trust is reviving 

this custom in places and is also 

replanting some of the old English 

apple varieties so that they are not 

lost to future generations. 

The most common saying concerning health is: ‘An 

apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ We also speak of 

someone being apple-cheeked, meaning healthy or 

with good colour, or of someone being ‘the apple of his 

eye’, a most precious thing. We ‘upset the apple cart’ 

and can keep our possessions in ‘apple pie order - 

except for making an ‘apple pie bed’. We also have 

apple of discord, any cause of envy or contention. 

Orchards, beloved by beekeepers for their blossom 

nectar and by bullfinches for their apple buds, are special 

places where destruction or damage is considered 

extremely bad luck to the perpetrator. All I can say is, 

we are lucky to have them, arriving with us by way of a 

very convoluted route. The next time you eat an apple, 

have a little thought to the history of this wonderful fruit.

A talk for all food lovers 

The June lecture of the The Dartmoor Decorative and 

Fine Arts Society is entitled ‘From Soup to Syllabub’. 

Jane Tapley, special events organiser at the Theatre 

Royal, Bath and TV production consultant will be providing 

a light hearted insight into the food and eating 

habits of 18 th Century England. 

The lecture will be held in The Charter Hall, Okehampton 

on Wednesday 27 th June. Doors open for tea and 

coffee at 9.45am. The lecture starts at 10.30 prompt. 

Everyone is welcome. Tickets are £6, payable at the 

door (refundable if you join the society). A year’s membership 

costs £45 (£85 for two) and provides a quarterly 

arts magazine and nine lectures (one a month 

except July, August and January) on a diverse range of

Chagford Film Festival 

The glamour of the film world is returning with the second 

Chagford Film Festival, set for the 24 th to 29 th 

September. Following the huge success of last year’s 

festival, organisers are planning a bigger bolder event, 

now to be run yearly. The razzle dazzle of the week 

culminates with a red carpet black tie gala event with 

cocktails, music and the paparazzi to snap you. The 

glittering evening ends with the presentation of the 

Chagford Golden Globes. 

Among our 2012 celebrities will be a return visit from 

directors and producers Stephen Saunders and Oscar 

winner Gareth Urwin of Kings Speech fame. Events will 

take place at The Globe Cinema, The Jubilee Hall, Endecott 

House and St Michael’s Church. An exhibition of 

movie memorabilia is also planned for the week. 

Proceeds will go to On The Edge youth project based 

in Chagford and Shelter Box. Chagford Business Association 

has announced it will be backing this year’s festival.

SCHOOLS AND YOUNG PEOPLE 

South Tawton Primary School 

Once again, the pupils at South 

Tawton have shown great enthusiasm 

for, and excellent skills in, a 

range of sports. 

The school hosted yet another successful 

Tag Rugby Festival with 16 

enthusiastic teams entered, including 

three from South Tawton. South 

Tawton brought the Cup back to 

school for the third consecutive year 

despite fierce competition from the 

local schools. The ‘Lions Team’ will 

now go onto play in the West Devon 

finals. A very proud Miss Hutchings! 

At the beginning of March, a team of 

nine keen hockey players travelled to 

Exeter University to take part in the 

Devon Hockey Finals. The team 

played with great spirit and improved 

from game to game. They were 

awarded with one win, one draw and 

Spreyton School 

At the end of the Spring Term we said our goodbyes to 

Mrs Dooley who has worked in our Key Stage 2 class 

for four years. Mrs Dooley is focussing on her other 

teaching commitments in other schools and we wish 

her well, she will be missed. 

Mr Burton joined us at the start of the summer term. 

Class 2 is now shared between Ms Kellman and Mr 

Burton with both working Wednesdays which enables 

us to target our teaching to specifically identified targets 

for each of our children as we continue our focus 

on improving standards. Mr Burton has brought some 

new and exciting ideas to the class 2 team, our children 

are particularly enjoying his love of maths! 

Spreyton's exciting news is that as of 8 th June we will 

become part of a brand new federation of schools as 

we join with Copplestone Primary to become the Mid- 

Moors Federation. Members of our wider community 

are unlikely to notice much of a change in the day-today 

running and organisation of the school. Our teaching 

team will remain the same for the rest of this year. 

As with all schools it is too early yet to tell if there will 

be any changes come September, however it remains 

the intention of staff to continue building on our successes, 

driving improvements and ensuring Spreyton 

three losses, putting them fourth out 

of six. One of our players, Cole 

Pengelly, won the overall Player of 

the Tournament Award. 

Following our Year 6 teams’ success 

in the Rotary Club Quiz heats, both 

teams were invited to take part in the 

finals in the Octagon Theatre at Okehampton 

College on the 15 th March. 

Team 2 achieved second place, 

closely followed by Team 1 who 

achieved a very impressive joint 

third. 

There are currently 12 extracurricular 

clubs catering for all year groups and 

the two new clubs led by parents 

have proved popular and continue to 

be well attended. It is very exciting to 

hear pupils speaking Simplified Mandarin 

and watch children tackling 

unicycle lessons with great gusto!

As the summer term marches on, 

Year 6 pupils are looking forward to 

spending a week in France, Year 4 

will be camping overnight following a 

walk on the moors and Year 3 will be 

visiting the Eden Project. 

It is always a busy term and we will 

be taking part in the Okehampton 

area ‘Olympics’, putting on a performance 

of The Pirates of the Curry 

Bean!, holding our sports day and 

the annual barbecue.

retains its unique character which makes it such a very 

special school to our village. 

Towards the end of last term our children in class 2 

enjoyed a day at the Vue Cinema in Exeter. They had 

been studying narratives in film and joined a showing 

of films created by school children across the area as a 

part of the Animated Exeter Film Festival. Our creativity 

did not stop there. Ms Kellman worked with groups of 

children in two dance projects, we performed in the 

Northcott for both the 3D dance and the Crediton 

Learning Community festivals. 

Our outside learning environments are beginning to 

change! Over the winter all members of our school 

community worked to design improvements to our playground 

– these plans are about to be put into action! 

Our playground will see a transformation of one corner 

into a reflection of our link school in Tanzania – we 

hope our outdoor classroom and stage will be ready for 

our Tanzanian teacher's visit in June! We have a new 

storyteller's chair and sandpit coming, as we brighten 

the playground both physically and through wider exciting 

opportunities to take our learning outside!

Youth worker’s message 

Over the next few months a few key things are happening 

with the youth work in the area. I can’t believe it’s 

the middle of the year already and I’m nearly at the end 

of my degree. As you are hopefully aware, On the 

Edge is hoping to keep the youth work going from September, 

but requires funds to keep the project running. 

My aim is to stay on past this time, but if this is not possible 

I have arranged to continue working for On the 

Edge until the end of August. I would like to make it 

clear that my passion for this project and the work it 

does is still as strong as ever and I would love to continue 

working with the young people in the area. There 

is still so much work to do and so many opportunities to 

provide exciting new projects in which the young people 

can be involved! 

The Mess 

The Mess youth centre has been running now for a 

couple of months! So far it has been a real success 

and with the younger sessions in particular, we’re getting 

on average 16 young people a session, not all of 

whom have interacted with the project before, which is 

great. We want this centre, which is next to the Vets’ in 

Chgford, to be for everyone to enjoy and we encourage 

any young people aged between 11-18 years old to 

pop in. We are currently open on Mondays and Tuesdays 

after school and the times and any changes of 

dates are always displayed on the door and in the windows. 

This centre is still on a trial run of six months 

until September and CELT, which is funding it with the 

help of local community grants, requires more funding 

if it is to continue past this time. 

Saints Way 

On 7 th and 8 th July, Diana Marriott and On the Edge 

are planning a 30-mile walk. This walk is the Saints 

Way walk between Padstow and Fowey. We are hoping 

for good weather and plan to walk 15 miles a day, 

camping in between on the Saturday night. We are do-

ing this to raise money for On the Edge and hope to 

get a number of the older young people along to help 

too. All involved will be looking for sponsors during 

June, so please support anyone involved with as much 

as you are able. We are really looking forward to this 

adventure and hope it will be a great success. Thank 

you to Diana, who has worked with me to bring this 

idea to life! Please keep an eye out for further information. 

Musical 

This year’s musical, run by Anna Shields and Emily 

Cook, is Beauty and the Beast! More than 25 young 

people have signed up and it is destined to be an 

amazing show! The dates of the performances are 

21 st -24 th August. Please keep an eye out for posters 

and further publicity. 

The future 

As I’ve mentioned in the last couple of editions, On the 

Edge is still looking for support to carry on the youth 

work it is involved with throughout the parish. The fact 

is that at this current moment, On the Edge is struggling 

to raise the funds to support this kind of proposal. 

Unfortunately, if On the Edge can’t raise the required 

funds, there is a real likelihood that there will be no 

more youth work in the parish as of September. This is 

a time when we all need to ask ourselves whether or 

not we want to invest in this project that has done so 

much good and aim to develop it further, or whether we 

regrettably have to call it a day.

Operation Reset 

Operation Reset is raising money towards a trip in 

2013 for Rest, Recuperation and Rehabilitation for 

troops of the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment which is 

currently on operations in Afghanistan. Andrew Lewis

DREWSTEIGNTON 

Your help needed! 

Drewsteignton Playing Field has had a busy and productive 

year which has seen the Field looking great 

and being used more and more. I would like to thank 

Kevin Power (mowing), Dave and Jimmy (strimming) 

for keeping it in tip top condition. We have installed the 

zip wire and new seats on all our swings, which cost 

£5,645 in addition to our other annual expenses. But 

our bank balance is still looking healthy as we have 

had been greatly supported by our community at all our 

events and, including donations from Teignton Fayre 

etc, we have managed to raise just under £4,000 over 

the last year. 

I have been amazed and awed by the support and 

generosity of our community and would like to thank 

everyone who has helped, attended and donated, and 

hope you agree that the Field is looking really good 

and has been well worth the effort. I want to thank the 

Parish Council in particular for their continuing support. 

However, we have a big problem with too few people 

on our committee; indeed this has reached a critical 

point with the resignation of our secretary, treasurer 

and health & safety officer. It is impossible for me to 

run the Playing Field on my own!

Since writing this we have had our AGM which I hope 

will have raised some support. We really need a team 

of around nine people to spread the work. I urge anyone 

who would like to see the Field continue to join us 

in saving it. Unless we have more active committee 

members, I can see no alternative but for this valuable 

parish resource to close.

Drewsteignton continued from page 25: 

The Lychgates 

Most people visiting the Drewsteignton Village Square 

will by now be aware that new Lychgates have recently 

been installed, replacing a C19th edition that were in a 

sad and sorry state of dilapidation. If you have time, 

take a close and detailed look at the workmanship involved 

in their making. It really is in the tradition of ecclesiastical 

furnishing of a very high order and far outweighs 

their predecessors in quality. 

Two craftsmen have been responsible for their creation. 

For the woodwork, Mr Philip Rose was a joiner 

some 30 years ago and is now an extremely accomplished 

designer and furniture maker. Go to his web 

site (below) and view a wall unit of some size made in

The gates are embellished with wrought iron hangings, 

decorative panels and fleurs-de-lys. Simple? Not so. 

Genuine wrought iron (only reintroduced since the last 

furnace ceased production in the ‘70s) is a difficult material 

to work and requires specific skills. Such a blacksmith 

is Mr Greg Abel who has owned and worked the 

150 year old Morton Forge for over a decade. You require 

hand made nails, a fire irons set, or a pair of estate 

gates? Greg will make them using traditional hot 

forging techniques in most of his work. A visit to the 

forge is an education in fine craftsmanship, material 

and atmosphere that hasn’t changed in centuries.

Holy Trinity Church 

Rosie Webber wrote in the last issue of the Parish 

Magazine that she hoped Holy Trinity would be full on 

Sunday 22 nd April when Paul dedicated the re-ordering 

of the chancel and our beautiful new altar frontal. It was 

wonderful to see so many friends and so many who 

had been involved in the works. They include Character 

Builders, Elinor who made the exquisite altar frontal, 

and her mother, Marcia, Allan van der Steen and his 

family, and John Getz who made our beautiful altar, a 

gift from Rosie and her family in memory of her father 

Dr Alan Lewtas. 

We were also fortunate to have in church several people 

whose loved ones had left generous legacies which 

enabled us to make the alterations. 

The Gidleigh cake makers were in sparkling form and 

an amazing selection of home cooking was enjoyed by 

all. So, thank you to all who came and all who contributed 

in any way towards the re-ordering, which makes 

our church even more beautiful. 

We had our Easter Holy Communion after the Vigil on 

the evening of Holy Saturday. It was a beautiful, meditative 

service with the opportunity to renew our baptismal 

vows and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Holy 

Trinity, and we thank Paul and Harriet for bringing us 

this joyful start to our Easter celebrations. 

At our APCM Rosie resigned as our Churchwarden 

after 10 years of caring for the church and church family 

– we will miss her and thank her for everything she

Open gardens cancelled 

Sadly, Drewsteignton Open Gardens have had to be put 

off until next year due to unforeseeable circumstances. 

However, the garden at Netherton Vine will be open for 

Morning Coffees and Traditional Afternoon Teas 

(marquee), on Sunday 1 st July from 10.30am to 

6.30pm for the Church Repair Fund. All welcome, including 

dogs on leads.

Paula and Sarah are giving up the Cubs in July, so 

Akela is looking for anyone interested in taking over the

they are made of oak and if anyone is interested

So, we come to the summer and the exciting programme 

that is planned for us within the Whiddon Parishes 

– beginning with the service at Pentecost at St 

Andrew’s, South Tawton. Perhaps the rain will have 

stopped by then! May it be a joyful time for us all.

Gidleigh and Throwleigh continued: 

Jubilee Service 

The Rector has very kindly agreed to hold a short service 

at Gidleigh at 6pm on the Saturday of the Diamond 

Jubilee weekend, 2 nd June, and afterwards everyone 

is invited by Michael and Swana Hardy for a 

drink in the Castle grounds. 

Everyone is greatly looking forward to the occasion 

which would make an ideal opportunity for those in the 

parish who do not visit the church regularly to see all 

the works that have been carried out recently. 

News from St Mary’s 

Rebecca Jordan 

Following on from the Friends of Throwleigh Church 

AGM the previous week, where there was much to 

celebrate and to look forward to in the coming year in 

and around the church, we held our APCM in church 

with support from both within and without the PCC. 

Thanks were given to the Friends for their amazing 

support over the past year - which is ongoing - and a 

particular welcome to The Revd Paul Seaton-Burn, 

who led us not only through the official business with 

efficiency but also opened up to the floor a debate on 

our style of worship. 

This produced much lively and encouraging discussion: 

we shall expect a wider variety of worship in 

church soon, starting with our DIY service on Sunday 

10 th June when a Celtic form of morning service will be 

celebrated at 11.15am. 

It is a year of change, bidding a sad farewell to our 

churchwardens, Robin and Penny. The Clarksons are 

moving to be near their family in Bovey Tracey. They 

have both been stalwart carers of our church and 

Robin has served for more than 10 years as churchwarden. 

Pip has been inspirational in her talent for 

flower-arranging; she also gives much support behind 

the scenes. Penny is the master-mind behind most of 

our fund-raising events in addition to her duties as joint 

churchwarden. She is an exceptional cook, from which 

we have benefited for years, but the light at the end of 

this tunnel is that she and David are not moving away 

but taking time out for a year or so to spend more time 

with their family and grandchildren. Penny remains acting 

churchwarden during the handover. 

All friends are warmly invited to a farewell garden party 

at Blackaton on Thursday 19 th July from 4pm. Please 

let Penny or Kit know on 231494/433319 to help with 

numbers.

many years on the PCC following her late husband,

Easter services 

Hittisleigh had its first service on Good Friday for many 

years. This year we were grateful to The Revd Paul for 

a very thoughtful and moving service. The music was 

beautiful. 

On Easter Sunday the church was packed with people 

and flowers for a lovely celebration service led by Noël 

and Elva. The church windows were adorned with seasonal 

flowers, eggs, chicks and, most poignantly, a 

wreath of thorns. The Easter Garden was appreciated 

by everyone, especially the posies of violets and primroses. 

We forgot to eat the chocolate eggs, but enjoyed 

them the following week – thank you Sheila B! 

Easter Quiz 

Sadly no fully dressed bunnies hopped in for the Hittisleigh 

Easter Quiz, but a competitive set of teams participated 

with the Binneford Brainies winning by a 

country mile. The raffle raised £83 towards the kitchen 

renovation and Carole B’s beautiful Easter creation, 

complete with real edible flowers, won the cake competition. 

The rest of the cakes were quickly eaten by 

the hungry competitors. 

Hearty thanks go to Brian and Tony for arranging this 

evening of brain teasing and laughter and also to the 

talented cake makers of the parish for the sumptuous 

cakes!

Hittisleigh Diamond 

Jubilee celebrations 

Celebrations will commence on 

Sunday 3 rd June with a special 

Songs of Praise service at St Andrew’s 

starting at 3pm. The service 

will be followed by a delicious 

cream tea. Our theme will be Diamond Jubilee with 

flowers in patriotic colours; any suggestions for hymns 

and worship songs to Tony M please. Everyone is very 

welcome. 

The celebrations will continue with an afternoon of 

games and fun on Monday 4 th June starting around 

2.30pm. Wear comfy clothes and appropriate footwear 

to take part in the obstacle course, sack race and the 

infamous Hittisleigh egg throwing tournament. There 

will be a Royal Fancy Dress competition, but make 

sure you can still compete in the games, a barbecue – 

with only the very best Luxton burgers and sausages 

- and skittles into the early evening.

Hittisleigh and Spreyton continued: 

We are very excited that a local artist has volunteered 

to paint a very special portrait of Her Majesty for the 

Village Hall as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. 

The Committee was extremely pleased to hear 

this news as an original photograph of the Queen disappeared 

many years ago. Huge thanks to Don for this 

offer and to Malcolm who has kindly volunteered to 

frame it. 

£10,000 from Awards for All 

Hittisleigh Village Hall committee is delighted to announce 

that the National Lottery Fund have awarded 

the hall £10,000 towards the kitchen renovation. 

This, combined with monies raised by the community, 

will fund opening up and repair of the original vaulted 

Victorian ceiling, a new floor (no more falling through 

we hope), new electrical wiring, beautiful new kitchen 

units, water heater and possibly even a new cooker – 

which fully works! The renovation contract has been 

awarded to Graham Dicker of Dunsford, who did an 

excellent job on the main hall a couple of years ago. 

Thanks go to Howdens Joinery for their continued support 

of the project and for providing high quality kitchen 

units at a very reasonable rate for this community 

building. Thanks also to Rosemary W who continues to 

lead the subcommittee on design issues and to Chris 

W who is project managing the works. A huge amount 

of time has been spent by these people and committee 

members on the restoration and design plans for the 

kitchen, but if you have any thoughts, suggestions or 

contributions please do talk with any member of the VH 

Committee. The old range cooker from the kitchen is 

available to a good home, references required. 

Ceilidh reminder 

A reminder for the diary; our local ceilidh band 

‘Footloose’ has been booked for the celebration ceilidh 

on Saturday 15 th September. The Village Hall committee 

will be planning suitable food and tickets will be 

available closer to the date.

Whist and bingo 

Fayre Bingo has already taken place. Numbers were 

slightly down this year but a profit of £70 was made. 

Whist Drives are held on a monthly basis. Recently 

money was raised for the Churchyard Fund and on 

another occasion over £100 was raised for the Devon 

Air Ambulance. Many thanks to all who supported 

these events.

News from St Andrew’s 

and St Mary’s 

As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Diocese 

of Exeter has compiled a book containing messages 

of good will from churchgoers in Devon. Although 

we received only short notice of this, I am 

pleased to report that South Tawton parish has contributed 

four pages of signatures from the congregations 

at St Andrew’s and St Mary’s and South Zeal Methodist 

Church, members of the Parish Council, individual villagers, 

children and staff at South Tawton Primary 

School and members of the Beavers, Brownies, Cubs 

and Scouts. The book will be presented to Her Majesty 

personally by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon. 

Easter services were well attended and thanks to our 

valiant band of flower arrangers, both St Andrew’s and 

St Mary’s were looking their best with lovely spring displays. 

The traditional Easter garden at St Andrew’s 

was made by Ed Selwood (assisted by his parents). 

Thank you to all concerned and to those who generously 

donated flowers and money to buy the lilies. 

The Parish Church Repair Fund has benefited from a 

number of initiatives and donations over the past two 

months. First, children at South Zeal Primary School 

held a non-uniform day and sale of hot cross buns at 

the end of the spring term which raised £177.89. Many 

thanks to the organisers

Thirdly, Viscount Amory Memorial Trust has responded 

positively to our application for a grant and awarded us 

£1,000. We are grateful for their generosity. The results 

of other grant applications are pending. 

Finally, if you are looking for an activity for the summer, 

you can’t do better than our new Dartmoor Letter Box 

Walk, devised and organised by Sarah Miller (see page 

41). We are very grateful to Sarah for this initiative 

which has already raised in excess of £150. 

As a result of fund raising efforts to date we now have 

enough money to carry out the exploratory work on the 

aisle roofs to determine the exact extent of the damage 

and the work needed. Following tendering, Jeremy 

Chadburn from Launceston has been appointed Architect 

to oversee the work and will frequently be seen at 

the church from now on until the work is completed. 

This year marks the 750 th anniversary of the appointment 

of our first recorded Rector, Nicholas Longspee 

(Longsword), and Vicar (Alan of Yetminster). To celebrate 

we will be having a Medieval Fayre as our summer 

event to be held in the churchyard at St Andrew’s 

on Saturday 9 th June, 2-6pm. It is hoped that everyone 

who is able will come in appropriate medieval costume 

to add atmosphere to the day, which is planned 

to be a really fun event for the whole family. Lovaton 

Farm have generously donated a pig for a Hog Roast, 

which we will cook medieval style over an open fire. 

Church House will return to its original function as a 

Licensed Ale House selling real ales. There will be 

stalls, crafts and entertainment, not forgetting Elspeth 

and her sister’s mouth-watering puddings in the 

church, zip-wiring teddies and a raffle. Offers of help, 

donations for sale or raffle and logs for the fire would 

be much appreciated.

Community Notice board 

We have recently put up a community notice board outside the visitor centre as a result of our desire to be more responsive 

to our local community’s needs and support local events. It is a great opportunity for you to promote events 

and activities happening in the local area. Here are some guidelines on how this notice board will work: 

• There will not be a charge to display community information. Local people wanting to place adverts (such as puppies 

for sale) will be asked to make a donation to the save Castle Drogo fundraising target. Adverts will only stay on 

the board for a maximum of 1 month. 

• All notices, posters etc. must not be bigger than A4 to leave plenty of space for everyone. 

• Preference will be given to notices from the immediate local community (within 10 mile radius). 

• The Visitor Reception team will monitor the dates of notices and remove out of date information. 

All notices to be displayed must go via the visitor reception team. 

If you would like to display a poster then please pop into visitor reception. 

Find out more about the plans to make Drogo watertight 

Throughout the year there are opportunities to find out more about the work over the next five years, from winter this 

year, to make the Castle watertight. On Fridays at 12.30 and 2.30pm there are Design for Life! tours led by one of our 

knowledgeable volunteers to include parts of the castle not normally open to the public as well as a visit to the roof 

(weather permitting). On the first Wednesday of every month, April to September, between 2 and 4pm, there are Design 

for Life! drop in sessions led by one of our volunteers. Here you can discover more about what will be happening 

during the five years of the project including what you will be able to see and do. We still have a huge amount of 

money to raise for the project and need volunteers to sell raffle tickets. We need to raise 10,000 a year from the raffle. 

If you enjoy talking to the public and a challenge, and want to be part of this amazing project, then please get in touch. 

We are also need new volunteers to help with room guiding, gardening and helping to run our events. If you have some

Letter box walk for 

St Andrew’s church roof 

Letterboxing can be considered the gentle art of making 

a short family walk take a long time by ‘treasure 

hunting’ along the way with a clues, map and compass. 

Or in these more modern times GPS assistance can be 

used. 

Each clue has a map grid reference, a description of 

the hiding place and a number of compass bearings to 

landmarks visible from that spot: combine the three 

and you should be able to find the hidden plastic box at 

that location. Inside each ‘letter box’ is a rubber stamp 

of which to take an impression. In some of the boxes 

there is a visitors’ book in which to leave your own 

stamp or a comment. You need to take an ink pad, paper 

and pencil with you. 

If you would like to try and find a set of letterboxes and 

collect impressions of 12 stamps related to St Andrew’s 

South Tawton church roof, a clue sheet for a five-mile 

circular walk on Cosdon Beacon is on sale for £2.50 

this summer. The walk can be accessed from South 

Zeal, Sticklepath or Belstone, and can be walked in 

either direction. It does include some steep sections 

and is not suitable for pushchairs. 

Money raised by sale of these clue sheets will go to the 

St Andrew’s Roof Repair Fund. The clue sheet can be 

bought from South Zeal Store, St Andrew’s Church, 

South Tawton or by sending an SAE and a cheque for 

£2.50 payable to ‘St Andrews PCC (Roof Fund)’ to
