letter from the Chair 

In 1982 I proudly walked across the stage at Western Michigan university to receive a degree in Business 

Administration. Or so I thought. Little did I know that Oakland community college was going to play a role 

in finishing this dream. 

Instead of receiving the official diploma in the mail, I received a letter informing me that two electives I had 

taken were determined to be insufficient for my degree and needed to be retaken. With no money left to pay 

this tuition or the housing costs of staying in Kalamazoo, I would have to drive three hours, three days a week 

for the next two semesters to complete these classes! 

Adding to my nightmare, the letter read, “The last thirty hours of any business majors classes, must be 

completed on campus.” I appealed this decision twice. Finally, I received a letter that there was one college 

with a class professor and class syllabus that WMu would approve to complete my Bachelors degree. 

It was Oakland community college and the classes were available at the Auburn Hills campus. 

Occ’s quality classes and instructors were the answer to my dilemma. Without it, I’m not sure when I would 

have completed my degree. 

As chairman of the Occ Foundation Board, I am honored to have the opportunity to give back to such a 

quality institution of learning. I want others to have the same positive and rewarding educational experience 

that I had. 

It is my goal to increase the Foundation’s assets during my term as chairman. All of you identified in this 

Report have acted to recognize those people and programs that have inspired you over the years. As you 

increase your support to Occ, you can inspire others to attain their dreams as well. Thank you for your

Memorial Scholarship Keeps Memories Alive 

Retired mathematics faculty member Richard “Dick” 

Taylor has many memories of Occ. One very fond 

memory was being able to watch his fiancée, gail, 

graduate from Occ. gail earned her MLT degree so 

she could work as a medical technician, a goal she 

had set for herself when she was getting divorced 

and had two children to raise. 

Though known throughout academia as a “nontraditional 

student”, gail’s circumstances are 

typical at Occ, where the average student age 

is 27. not so typical is gail marrying a faculty 

member she met on campus. 

Dick began at Occ in 1965 and worked 

primarily at the Highland Lakes campus until his 

2002 retirement. During this time, he consistently 

donated to the Occ Foundation, supporting Occ 

programs through the general Fund, campaign 

2000, the Occ Faculty Association Endowment 

and various memorial scholarships as colleagues 

or friends passed away. 

He never anticipated the need to establish a 

memorial scholarship for his wife, gail. After

and advance my 

career...” 

working for more than a decade at Pontiac general 

Hospital, she was killed in a car accident a month 

after retiring. Through his grief, Dick knew that he 

wanted to keep her memory alive at Occ, helping 

students who strive, as she did, to advance their 

career through additional education. He established 

the gail Taylor Memorial Scholarship in 1997, and 

continues to fund the scholarship which provides 

financial support for two students each year. 

Dick says, “Occ contributed to the success of me 

and my family, helping me grow and advance 

my career, and giving gail the opportunity to 

become established in a new profession. I hope 

this scholarship will give students the same 

opportunity to grow and advance in a career of 

their choosing.” 

Richard Taylor is a retired OCC faculty member, 

who worked primarily at the Highland Lakes 

Campus. 

Gail Taylor with her granddaughter, Emily. Emily survived 

the accident that killed Gail, suffering only bruises from 

her restraining belts. Emily is now 11 years old.

It’s Not Just The Money 

Ask Monica Pope about receiving the Denny 

Williams Memorial Scholarship and she doesn’t 

begin with the fact that it covered almost all of 

her tuition for a year. Her first thought was that 

she—herself as well as her dreams—were being 

validated. 

She was near quitting. She was living on disability 

from a hearing loss incurred in childhood. Her 

job had been eliminated by downsizing at a 

bank. Her housing arrangements were falling 

apart. She needed to find a car to drive—no bus 

routes and times coincided with the days and 

times of the classes remaining for her to achieve 

her associates degree. And then, health problems 

required two surgeries. 

“If I didn’t get 

financial aid, I was 

ready to accept that 

a degree just wasn’t 

meant to be. There is 

now no reason for me 

not to succeed with the 

opportunity I have 

been given.” 

“It just seemed too hard, too frustrating. I was 

competing with younger students. My grades 

dropped a bit when I was ill. If I didn’t get financial 

aid, I was ready to accept that a degree just wasn’t 

meant to be.” 

In her words, “The scholarship gave me a sense 

of purpose, the confidence and the enthusiasm to 

accomplish what I needed to accomplish. There 

is now no reason for me not to succeed with the 

opportunity I have been given.” 

There is another reason she wants to succeed, 

however. She learned what a difference, what a 

lift, a scholarship can give a recipient. now she 

wants to know if being the donor of a scholarship 

can give her the same sense of purpose. 

Monica Pope will graduate from OCC in May 

2007 and will attend Walsh College to complete 

her bachelor’s degree in accounting.

PTK Students Are My Inspiration 

Like the chicken and the egg, sometimes it is hard 

to discern whether inspiration comes through 

action, action through inspiration, or if the two 

create a continuum with one person’s or group’s 

actions leading to others being inspired to act, 

thereby inspiring others to further action, and 

so on. 

now in her fourth year as adviser to the Phi Theta 

Kappa (PTK) chapter on the Royal Oak and 

Southfield campuses, Jan Akehurst said that the 

students are a constant inspiration to her. An honor 

society for two-year colleges, PTK emphasizes the 

values of fellowship, leadership, scholarship and 

service in a student’s life. Many of the chapter 

members have full-time jobs in addition to their 

classes, have family obligations and, she laughed, 

“A life to live.” Yet they find time for numerous 

service activities including building homes with 

Habitat for Humanity, bell-ringing for the Salvation 

Army, or participating in the Auction for a cure, 

Relay for Life and Light the night fund-raisers. 

Jan says, “You make time for those things that 

are important. I see these students making time 

to be supportive of each other, to participate in 

service projects, and still maintain the academic 

excellence required to be invited into PTK. I am 

passionate about PTK. One way to show it was 

to fund a scholarship for the student members of 

PTK. I admire and am inspired by their ability to 

balance their priorities.” 

The Alpha Omicron Psi Scholarship established 

by Jan and her husband is awarded to two 

members of the Royal Oak/Southfield chapter of 

Phi Theta Kappa each semester. She has seen this 

award allow a student to take one extra class to 

graduate earlier and be able to concentrate fully 

on his career. For another, the scholarship covered 

textbooks for classes. But Jan said, “I’m happy just 

to be able to reward them for their hard work.” 

One such student is Laura Manley, a 2006 Occ 

graduate, and immediate past-president of the 

Royal Oak/Southfield PTK chapter. Laura now 

works full time at Marygrove college, where 

she is also completing requirements for her 

Bachelors degree in Library Science. An eighth 

grade dropout, Laura earned her gED before 

attending Occ, and credits Jan for her success 

and confidence that she can now handle anything. 

Laura stated, “Jan’s enthusiasm, excitement and 

willingness to go above and beyond the call of 

duty motivated us to build the PTK chapter from 

almost nothing to its current membership of 

122. She was an inspiration to us, attending our 

events, often taking personal days to do so. Jan 

was totally selfless with all of us.” 

Jan Akehurst is an Administrative Specialist 

for Academic and Student Services, for the Royal 

Oak/Southfield campuses. 

“I am passionate about PTK and one way to show 

it was to fund a scholarship for the student 

members of PTK.”

Inspiring Students 

To Stretch 

colleague Jack Inch will still start to call out a “good 

night” when he passes carl Austermiller’s office, 

or sometimes to walk in to discuss an issue that 

has surfaced. After working together for 38 years, 

who could blame him? But carl passed away in 

August, and Jack is one of hundreds of carl’s 

colleagues, friends, and students who still miss him 

and the quiet inspiration he instilled in so many. 

Jack misses these little things, but remembers how 

students kept in touch with him long after they left 

his classroom and Occ. They, too, remember his 

reasonable approach to matters that arose. 

Sylvia Austermiller, his wife, said this: 

“carl—cJ to me—was an educator’s educator. 

He loved to teach, and even though he taught 

survey courses in economics at Occ for most 

of his career, he kept the materials as fresh and 

current as the daily news. He was a tough 

teacher who challenged his students to stretch 

their craniums. And yet, those who had learning 

challenges or tough personal lives found him to 

be a real softie. He was passionate about Occ; 

he was proud to be a member of the Occ family, 

and he felt the institution contributed enormously 

to the community and the students it served. 

“In his life outside of Occ, cJ was a labor 

economist and consultant. One of the proudest 

days of his life was when both of his daughters, 

“He was a tough teacher 

who challenged his 

students to stretch their 

craniums.” 

Heidi and Rebecca, graduated from Occ. 

Since they chose to graduate on the same day, 

cJ donned a cap and gown and participated in 

commencement with them. He tried to act like it 

was no big deal, but I can assure you it was a big 

deal! He was a grandfather to two lovely girls 

and spent many an hour singing songs with them 

and playing board games, especially checkers. 

“As for his life with me, cJ and I had 43 wild, 

wonderful years together, and we were fortunate 

enough to have great kids, grandkids, friends, and 

colleagues. We enjoyed creative and academic 

freedom, and we had traveled much of the world. 

In July, Occ granted him a full year sabbatical, 

but unfortunately, the Fates stepped in.” 

carl will be remembered through the scholarship 

donations sent to the Occ Foundation in his 

memory, but his spirit will live on through the 

hundreds of students and friends he inspired, in 

and out of the classroom. 

Sylvia Austermiller was married to Carl, an 

economics instructor at Orchard Ridge, for 43 

years. She shared some thoughts about her 

husband.
