HISTORY<br />

Our founder, <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong>, dedicated her life to educating and guiding youth towards<br />

realizing their dreams. By comprehensively integrating the arts and academics, each<br />

student was led to discover, develop and share their unique gifts and talents.<br />

<strong>Conchita</strong>’s own history reflects this integration. At the age of 14, she graduated from the<br />

International <strong>Conservatory</strong> in Havana. Upon graduation, she continued her studies under<br />

Jasha Fischerman and Joaquin Nin, while performing in Mexico, Cuba and the U.S. This<br />

formidable pedagogue founded her own conservatory in Havana in 1933. By 1959, it had<br />

grown into an elementary school and arts conservatory with over 450 students. The late<br />

composer Ernesto Lecuona, one of Cuba’s most distinguished musicians, declared, “You<br />

were born to teach. You have the divine gift of transforming the student and accomplishing<br />

the maximum, always bringing out his personality. That is a gift from God.”<br />

Throughout the years, <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts has been blessed with<br />

excellent teachers who shared <strong>Conchita</strong>’s dedication to arts education. Past teachers have<br />

included distinguished artists such as: Rosita Segovia, Manuel Ochoa, Michael Fokine,<br />

Martha Mahr, Dulce Anaya, Elena del Cueto, Gloria Gaither, and Mariana Alvarez. We<br />

continue to have the finest teachers and professionals available working with our students.<br />

Today, <strong>Conchita</strong>’s dream is lovingly continued by her daughter, CEA and <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

Director, Maribel Z. Diaz and her granddaughters, Middle School Principal, Carol Diaz-<br />

Zubieta, and psychologist, Ana Diaz-Zubieta. <strong>Conservatory</strong> and <strong>Academy</strong> teachers—some<br />

who knew <strong>Conchita</strong>—all work together and reflect in their daily interactions with students the<br />

heart of <strong>Conchita</strong>’s legacy: “¡Ser mejor, mejor y mejor!”<br />

GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

This section provides a general overview of the <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts. It<br />

includes a description of the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s faculty, class offered as well as general guidelines<br />

of comportment and expectations. For a more detailed and specific set of guidelines, please<br />

see the Responsibilities and Requirements section starting on page 12 .<br />

Faculty<br />

Our <strong>Conservatory</strong> faculty is chosen for its excellent teaching and artistic skills and professional<br />

credentials. Each enjoys a superb reputation in their respective areas of expertise. Our<br />

teachers focus, not only on students’ progression and growth in their arts discipline, but also on<br />

nurturing individual qualities such as respect for self and others, self-discipline, pride, and<br />

responsibility. We are fortunate to avail ourselves of our teacher’s knowledge, experience, skill<br />

and caring natures.<br />

Resumes of each <strong>Conservatory</strong> teacher, including training and experience, are presented at<br />

the end of this handbook.<br />

Classes<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> classes are open to students of all ages (children, adolescents, and adults), from<br />

beginner to professional levels. In all <strong>Conservatory</strong> disciplines, level placement is made at the<br />

discretion of the department heads and faculty, based on student age and ability. All<br />

decisions are made with the student’s best interest in mind.<br />

Unlike an academic setting, students in an arts’ conservatory often remain in a level for more<br />

than one year. Of utmost importance is that our students are promoted at a pace that is<br />

appropriate to his/her proficiency in the given discipline—demonstrated by elements such as<br />

their physical strength, developmental maturity, and demonstration of the necessary<br />

knowledge base for promotion. Please do not be concerned if a student remains in a level for<br />

two or more years.<br />

Dress Code<br />

Each arts discipline has its own dress requirements. It is the student’s (and/or parent’s)<br />

responsibility to ensure that the dress code and appropriate requirements are met before<br />

entering class. Uniforms for specific disciplines are listed in the Responsibilities and<br />

Requirements section on page 19.<br />

Bags or other paraphernalia that convey inappropriate pictures or slogans are not permitted<br />

on the <strong>Conservatory</strong> premises. In addition, no clothes with inappropriate monikers may be<br />

used in any of the disciplines. Only dance shoes may be worn in dance studios and on stage;<br />

no street shoes are permitted. Furthermore, dance shoes should not be worn outdoor; this<br />

ruins your shoes and studio floors. To ensure safety, students are not to walk barefoot in the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> hallways or outdoor premises.<br />

Registration and Tuition<br />

Registration and tuition are payable in the Main Office of the <strong>Academy</strong> building. Tuition is<br />

based on one yearly fee, September through May. For your convenience, tuition may be<br />

divided into nine (9) equal monthly payments. However, please note that holidays and<br />

vacation time do not affect the monthly payment because they have been already<br />

accounted for in the yearly tuition fee.<br />

Please refer to the Tuition Sheet for a detailed listing of each discipline and the corresponding<br />

tuition. There is a $40.00 registration fee per discipline, and a $10.00 late fee, per month if<br />

tuition is not paid by the 5th of the month.<br />

Building and Theater Use<br />

Following is a list of what is expected of each arts student regarding the use of <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

facilities:<br />

• Students are not permitted in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> building or the Theater without a<br />

faculty or staff member present.<br />

• Students are not allowed to use the dance studios without a faculty or staff member<br />

present.<br />

• No chewing gum, food or beverages are allowed inside the studios, practice<br />

classrooms, dressing rooms, or Theater.<br />

• Only students actively attending <strong>Conservatory</strong> classes are allowed in the dressing<br />

rooms before and after their class.<br />

• Personal items may be left in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> dressing rooms during class hours. All<br />

personal items, including uniforms, hair accessories, dance shoes, books etc. must be<br />

kept inside a bag at all times. Do not leave any personal items unattended in the<br />

bathrooms, studios, practice classrooms, or Theater. Items left unattended or left within<br />

the <strong>Conservatory</strong> premises after <strong>Conservatory</strong> hours, will be placed in the “Lost and<br />

Found,” in the <strong>Academy</strong> and will have a $1.00 recovery fee per item. Please note that<br />

the <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is not responsible for lost items.<br />

• Do not bring valuables into the dressing rooms, dance or music studios. The <strong>Conchita</strong><br />

<strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is not responsible for lost items.<br />

• Students are expected to respect and care for all of the facilities and property of the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong>, as well as the <strong>Academy</strong> premises, including the Theater. Misuse of<br />

facilities and/or property will result in disciplinary action, and may result in financial<br />

obligations to cover repair or replacement costs.<br />

• Instruments loaned or rented from the <strong>Conservatory</strong> are the responsibility of the<br />

student. If lost or damaged, the student is responsible for obtaining a replacement.<br />

• Any artwork on display within the <strong>Conservatory</strong> or School grounds may not be<br />

touched. Paintings, drawings, mixed media, pictures, sculptures, etc, are to be<br />

enjoyed and respected.<br />

• Respect of all written material, pictures and decorations placed on the bulletin boards.<br />

Become a “master of the Golden Rule.”<br />

Lockers and Cubbies<br />

There are a limited number of lockers in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> dressing rooms available for the use<br />

of the more advanced students. There is a yearly rental fee for the use of the lockers and only<br />

locks purchased at the <strong>Conservatory</strong> “Little Store” are allowed. Any other lock will be cut and<br />

removed.<br />

All locks must be removed and all lockers emptied by the last day of class. Maintenance will<br />

break open any locks left behind after the last day of classes and all personal items left in the<br />

lockers will be discarded.<br />

Lockers are assigned on a seniority basis. Exceptions may be made for younger students who<br />

take more than two disciplines. All students are expected to respect and care for<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> property and keep the lockers in good condition. It is important to also be<br />

espectful of your fellow artists’ belongings, especially those who do not have a locker and<br />

must leave their bags in the dressing room cubbies.<br />

Cubbies are not permanent substitutes for lockers. All items stored in cubbies during class must<br />

be removed when the student leaves for the day. Articles left behind will be taken to the<br />

school’s “Lost and Found” and there will be a $1.00 recovery fine per item.<br />

Visitors<br />

Classes are not open to visitors.<br />

• Open Classes<br />

Parents and relatives may come to a class during the week we conduct<br />

Open Classes. During Open Class Week, parents are welcome to watch their<br />

child’s class. Please refer to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Calendar for this year’s Open<br />

Class Week. Times and specific days will be announced a few days before<br />

the event.<br />

• Private Music Classes<br />

Students may schedule visitors to their own private music classes directly with<br />

their teachers at any time during the year.<br />

Progress Reports<br />

The <strong>Conservatory</strong> will give a progress report to each student each nine weeks, including an<br />

evaluation after juries have been held. Please refer to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Calendar at the end<br />

of this handbook for specific dates.<br />

Parents/Relatives of our younger students are encouraged to contact the <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

Artistic Director at any time during the year to check on their progress.<br />

Parents wishing to speak with Administration or Faculty may arrange an appointment by<br />

telephone or e-mail with the Artistic Director.<br />

Examinations and Juries<br />

Juries for Dance and Theater<br />

At the end of the school year, dance and theater students will be evaluated by a panel<br />

consisting of, but not limited to, the teacher, Head of the Department, Artistic Director and the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> Director. This process is very important in evaluating the student’s growth, level<br />

of commitment, and goals.<br />

The panel’s grade for the student’s performance the day of the evaluation is only a part of the<br />

overall final grade. The student’s work in class during the course of the year and his or her<br />

participation in rehearsals and performances will be discussed by the jury and will be reflected<br />

in the final grade.<br />

Students who are unable to participate in the jury evaluation due to injury, illness or other<br />

specific circumstances leading to an excused absence, will be scheduled for a conference<br />

with faculty to discuss their progress and goals. They will be given a grade of Incomplete (due<br />

to medical reasons or other circumstances). Students who have an unexcused absence on<br />

the day of the jury evaluation will meet with faculty to discuss goals for the following semester,<br />

and if such goals are not met, the student will be referred to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Director for<br />

further action. An unexcused absence during the jury evaluations will lead to a substantially<br />

lowered or failing grade for the semester and placement “on probation” status.<br />

Juries for Music<br />

At the beginning of the second semester the music students will be evaluated by a panel<br />

consisting of but not limited to the teacher, Head of the Department, and the Director. This<br />

process is very important for evaluating the student’s growth, level of commitment, and goals.<br />

The student will be assigned material to prepare for the jury meeting that will reflect work done<br />

in and outside of their class during the course of the year. The student’s progress in class and<br />

his/her participation in rehearsals and performances during the <strong>Conservatory</strong> year will be<br />

discussed during the jury evaluation. Observation of the student during the jury evaluation<br />

and impressions of the student’s progress by his/her corresponding teacher will be reflected in<br />

the final grade.<br />

Examinations for Martial Arts<br />

The progress for Martial Arts students is determined by their ability to meet the requirements for<br />

each “belt.” Advancing to the next “belt” is not necessarily achieved at the end of the school<br />

year.<br />

Examinations for Visual Arts<br />

The body of work the student has produced during the school year (portfolio), his or her<br />

behavior in class, and participation in showcases determine his or her final grade.<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> “Crew”<br />

Students 12 years of age and older may volunteer to serve as part of a team that will volunteer<br />

in special projects for the <strong>Conservatory</strong>.<br />

Parents for the Arts (PFA)<br />

The <strong>Conservatory</strong> is fortunate to have enthusiastic, dedicated parents who are eager to<br />

extend their children’s education by supporting of the <strong>Conservatory</strong> and its activities. PFA<br />

helps year-round with coordinating cultural field trips, decorating <strong>Conservatory</strong> hallways, fundraising,<br />

and general support of students and teachers. The PFA provide assistance during the<br />

preparatory stages and on the day of <strong>Conservatory</strong> performances, competitions and the CEA<br />

Festival of the Arts. To sign up to be a PFA member, please fill out our PFA Volunteer Form.<br />

These are distributed at <strong>Conservatory</strong> meetings.<br />

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS<br />

The Festival of the Arts is the crowning achievement of the talent,<br />

effort and dedication of our <strong>Conservatory</strong> teachers and students.<br />

It is a privilege to be part of the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s most cherished<br />

tradition. From the selection of its theme, the careful planning of<br />

the choreography, music selection, and scripting of every role,<br />

The Festival of the Arts is a showcase of the hard work,<br />

dedication, and growth the students have shown in class.<br />

The Festival of the Arts takes place on even years, usually in May, at the Miami-Dade County<br />

Auditorium. Tickets go on sale approximately a month before the performance. Performances<br />

throughout the year and the classwork itself, prepare our students for this outstanding evening.<br />

It is expected that all <strong>Conservatory</strong> students and their families attend the Festival. Part of the<br />

process of learning a discipline is learning from performances. Watching the more<br />

experienced students on stage gives the less experienced students a glimpse of what they will<br />

be able to achieve with perseverance and dedication to their art.<br />

The Festival is not just for the participants’ family and friends. It is an event that is open to the<br />

community and the whole CEA family. We are called to continue this very dear part of<br />

<strong>Conchita</strong>’s legacy.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS<br />

The arts are an integral part of a complete education. They enhance our<br />

social, mental and physical health. They develop our visual skills,<br />

sharpen the development of motor skills and coordination, and satisfy<br />

our spiritual need to create and share beauty. The <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong><br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is comprised of a comprehensive performing<br />

and fine arts program that facilitates student participation in the world of<br />

music, dance, theater, and the visual and martial arts, where each<br />

student can learn, feel valued, and develop his or her unique talents and<br />

abilities.<br />

We, the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s administration and faculty, believe that exposure<br />

and involvement in the arts promote the acquisition of knowledge,<br />

understanding, and commitment to that which is so essentially and<br />

beautifully human. We are committed to ensuring a learning<br />

environment that is respectful, orderly, supportive and safe.<br />

We also believe that it is only through your personal commitment and<br />

passion that you will be able to achieve your full creative potential. The<br />

following are your key responsibilities:<br />

Attendance Policy<br />

Focus and discipline are necessary for a student to maintain quality development as an artist<br />

and a person. Therefore, consistent attendance is essential. If a student is injured, he or she<br />

should attend class by watching and not be taken home early or stay in after-school.<br />

Because attendance is such a crucial part of your final grade, it is important that you<br />

understand how to maintain a good attendance record and how poor attendance adversely<br />

affects your grade, and ultimately, your chances of being promoted to the next discipline<br />

level at the end of the year.<br />

Many art lessons and projects require several class periods to complete. If a student misses a<br />

class during an art process, he/she will be missing important steps, generally resulting in an<br />

unfinished project.<br />

The following is a list of reasons for:<br />

1. Excused Absences: The student is absent for reasons that the Department considers<br />

legitimate, such as death in the family, hospitalization, or illness with a doctor’s note.<br />

Each absence will be reviewed on a case by case basis. The administration reserves<br />

the right to evaluate records with excessive, excused absences and determine if this<br />

will affect the student’s grade and promotion to the next level.<br />

2. Unexcused Absences: Vacations, trips, too much homework, birthdays and any other<br />

personal reason for missing class besides the ones mentioned above are considered<br />

an unexcused absence. Three (3) unexcused absences will automatically place the<br />

student on probation. A student on probation has until the end of the following<br />

semester to improve his or her attendance in order to be removed from probation. If a<br />

student does not pass probation, expulsion from the discipline may occur. Please note<br />

that students who are absent from class may be given the opportunity to make-up a<br />

missed class by taking another scheduled class with their teacher’s permission and<br />

assignment to the appropriate class.<br />

3. Early Dismissals: Students are allowed two Early Dismissals per semester per course.<br />

Permission to leave class early should be obtained from your teacher prior to class. A<br />

student should not leave class, even if given permission before class, without notifying<br />

the teacher. Please note that parents or other family member are not to interrupt a<br />

class (i.e., open the door during a class session, or signal to their child through the<br />

glass). In case of an emergency, a <strong>Conservatory</strong> monitor should be informed and they<br />

will assist you.<br />

4. Cuts: The student has been absent without the consent of a parent or guardian. When<br />

a student cuts class, the Artistic Director will notify parents. Two (2) cuts will<br />

automatically place the student on probation.<br />

5. Tardiness: Students are expected to be on time to each class consistently. Students<br />

who arrive late to a dance class miss important “warm-up” and may be asked to<br />

watch class and take notes. Three (3) tardies will automatically place the student on<br />

probation.<br />

6. Sit Down: A “sit down” occurs when a student is kept from participating in a group<br />

class and instead asked to remain in the room observing the class for reasons other<br />

than injury or illness. Three (3) Sit Downs will automatically place the student on<br />

probation.<br />

Students may asked to sit out for any of the following reasons:<br />

7. Performances and Rehearsals: The same guidelines for Excused and Unexcused<br />

Probation<br />

Absences in class apply to missing a rehearsal or not participating in a performance<br />

once the student has made a commitment to be part of an event. Please read the<br />

section Rehearsals and Performances Guidelines on page 25 for more information.<br />

All <strong>Conservatory</strong> students are required to:<br />

1. Maintain a minimum grade of 80%.<br />

2. Maintain a satisfactory attendance record, which includes classes, rehearsals, and<br />

performances.<br />

3. Maintain a respectful, focused behavior in class.<br />

Any student who fails to meet any of these three criteria will be immediately placed on<br />

probation.<br />

Students on probation jeopardize their opportunity to participate in performances and their<br />

final grade for the class will be lowered by ten (10) points.<br />

A student on probation has until the end of the following semester to meet the minimum<br />

requirements in order to be removed from probation and remain in the class.<br />

Class Guidelines<br />

• Classes begin on time. Be prepared with the complete uniform, materials, supplies and<br />

homework.<br />

• Bathroom breaks are before class, not during class.<br />

• Students are responsible for keeping the studios, classrooms and the Theater in order<br />

and clean for the next class.<br />

• Students are expected to show respect for the work in progress in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> at<br />

all times. Silence in the classrooms, hallways and the bathroom areas is vital to<br />

maintain the level of concentration in the studios and the theater during classes and<br />

rehearsals. Others deserve the same respect you do.<br />

• Courtesy is an important part of professional ethics. Students are expected to show<br />

respect to classmates and property, as well as to all school personnel and equipment.<br />

Doors should not be slammed at the entrance or exit from the studios or the theater<br />

where people are working.<br />

• No food, chewing gum or beverages are allowed in the studios and/or Theater.<br />

• The <strong>Conservatory</strong> class time cannot be used for meetings, or for extracurricular<br />

activities such as school clubs or crew activities. It is the student’s responsibility to<br />

inform school teachers when they have a prior commitment in the <strong>Conservatory</strong>.<br />

• Participate fully in class. Your attitude and body language express your level of<br />

commitment. Bring to class the concentration, enthusiasm and preparation needed in<br />

a performance.<br />

• Students will thank the teacher upon completion of class.<br />

• At the end of a dance, theater or music ensemble class, it is customary to applaud the<br />

teacher as a way of saying thank you.<br />

• Cell phones owned by students should be turned off for the length of time spent in the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong>. We request the same courtesy from parents while in the <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

hall.<br />

Music Theory and Solfège<br />

All music students will have a group class once a week in Music Theory and Solfège (from<br />

Pre A to 5th). The student must write down in his/her notebook the day and time of his music<br />

theory and solfège class so the other music teachers are aware.<br />

It is mandatory for all students to attend their weekly class of music theory and solfège in order<br />

to be eligible to participate in final exams and recitals. Students who do not pass the final<br />

exam in music theory and solfège will receive additional review material and will be<br />

scheduled for another exam in September. Those students who are still unable to pass the<br />

exam will have to repeat the level in music theory and solfège, even if they were promoted to<br />

another level in their instrument or voice class.<br />

Class Guidelines<br />

• The student must bring his/her music books and notebook to every class.<br />

• The teacher will write in the notebook what the student has to practice. This exercise<br />

will be graded in the following class.<br />

• Parents need to sign the notebook and encourage the student to practice daily to be<br />

prepared for the next class.<br />

Attendance<br />

• Students are expected to let their teachers know in advance if they will not be able<br />

to come to class.<br />

• All music students are required to attend all concerts performed at school. If the<br />

student is not playing he/she has to be in the audience.<br />

• Once scheduled to perform, whether at CEA or outside of the school, students are<br />

expected to keep this commitment.<br />

• All parents are invited to be present in their child’s private lesson after scheduling<br />

the visit with their child’s teacher.<br />

Evaluation<br />

Each exam will consist of performing the complete program in front of a jury.<br />

Dance Department Dress Code<br />

Following a dress code not only promotes discipline and pride, but allows teachers to observe<br />

a student’s body placement and alignment so that accurate corrections can be made.<br />

Please note that holes in leotards, tights or shoes are unacceptable.<br />

Ballet<br />

Girls and Young Ladies<br />

Hair must be worn in a bun, away from the face. Forest green, purple, gray and black groups<br />

are to wear a professional bun (matching hairnet and hair pins according to color of hair).<br />

Pink, light blue, red, lilac, navy, and cobalt groups are to wear the bun with the corresponding<br />

hair accessory. Please note that pins are still needed to attach the bun to the head.<br />

• No jewelry is allowed.<br />

Lyrical<br />

Ballet Shoes<br />

Ballet shoes should fit snugly so that no material can be pinched at the back of the heel when<br />

the foot is pointed. This means they cannot be bought with “growing room” as this does not<br />

allow the use of the correct muscles and can cause injury. Do not be tempted to use the<br />

drawstring to make the shoes “fit” as this can cause irreparable damage to the Achilles<br />

tendon at the back of the foot. Please make sure that drawstings are shortened after they<br />

have been tightened, and that they are neatly tucked inside the shoe during class and<br />

performances. The elastics should be sewn at the spot where the heel, when compressed,<br />

forms a right angle with the sides of the shoe.<br />

for adjustment as the screws tend to loosen through wear. Tap shoes may differ from class to<br />

class; therefore, the teacher must be consulted prior to purchasing shoes.<br />

purchase at the school. You must also bring your own yoga mat.<br />

Dance/Movement for Actors<br />

Class is designed to give actors a basic knowledge of dance steps and to develop<br />

confidence and body awareness to enhance their performance and broaden opportunities.<br />

Visual Arts Department Dress Code<br />

Students enrolled in Level 1 Art (1st and 2nd Grades) are required to wear an Art Apron over<br />

their clothing available for purchase at the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s “little store.” Students are required<br />

to wash their hands thoroughly before class.<br />

All <strong>Conservatory</strong> Art Students should come to class with a sharpened No. 2 pencil.<br />

Rehearsal and Performance Guidelines<br />

Rehearsals and performances are an integral part of the development and progression of a<br />

young artist’s technique, self-discipline, and commitment to their peers. If a student fails to<br />

attend a rehearsal due to an unexcused absence, he/she will be excluded from the<br />

corresponding performance and may receive a failing grade.<br />

The following guidelines are meant to help both, students and faculty members, work<br />

efficiently during rehearsals so that the highest artistic standards are achieved during the<br />

performance and rehearsal process.<br />

1. Once the student auditions for a production, concert, or choreography, the student<br />

makes him/herself available for the casting pool with the understanding that if chosen<br />

for the performance, he/she may not withdraw unless approved by the teacher and<br />

the Head of the Department.<br />

2. Students, parents and/or guardians are required to immediately notify the teacher if a<br />

rehearsal conflicts with previously scheduled activity. Only the teacher can give a<br />

student permission to miss a rehearsal. Do not assume that you can miss rehearsals<br />

without consequences.<br />

3. The student is expected to be on time for all scheduled rehearsals. Parents and/or<br />

guardians must notify the teacher or the Artistic Director immediately of any<br />

emergency which may cause the student to be late.<br />

4. It is important for the rehearsal/performance process that you maintain your health.<br />

Get plenty of rest, eat right and if you become ill, see a doctor immediately.<br />

5. The student must attend all final and dress rehearsals in order to be a part of a<br />

production. Do not schedule outside commitments on rehearsal days.<br />

6. Students are to come to rehearsals in the appropriate uniform for the discipline, as<br />

specified in the corresponding guidelines and described above. The only exceptions<br />

are dress rehearsals and specific written instructions from your teacher.<br />

7. No rehearsal of any kind may be held without a member of the Faculty or<br />

Administration present.<br />

8. No guests/relatives are allowed in any rehearsal unless approved by the teacher or the<br />

Administration.<br />

9. When attending a rehearsal, participants are expected to remain quiet and observe<br />

during the times that they are not working.<br />

Schedules/Calls<br />

1. Attendance is mandatory for all run-throughs, techs, dress rehearsals, and warm-ups. It<br />

is your responsibility to read all written communications from the <strong>Conservatory</strong> and/or<br />

check the <strong>Conservatory</strong> bulletin boards for all schedules. It is essential to adhere to call<br />

times given.<br />

2. Please check-in with the production director of the performance and/or stage<br />

manager upon arrival the day of a dress rehearsal and the day of the performance.<br />

Do not have anyone else do this for you. The staff needs to know you are present.<br />

3. Understudies or alternates should plan on attending all mandatory warm-ups for<br />

performances as directed by their teacher or production director.<br />

4. The stage manager is in charge of the performance backstage and all students must<br />

follow the stage manager’s instructions.<br />

Backstage Etiquette<br />

1. Only the technical staff and the performers involved in that portion of the performance<br />

need be backstage at the time a piece is being performed. If you see anyone who<br />

should not be backstage, please tell the stage manager immediately. The stage<br />

manager will take care of the situation.<br />

2. Treat running crews with respect. You cannot do the show without them.<br />

3. Neither talking nor applauding is allowed backstage. Become a “master of silence.”<br />

4. No heavy feet while exiting during black outs.<br />

5. Be careful when exiting through the backstage doors or the theater side doors and<br />

avoid slamming the doors. It breaks the entire magic and concentration created on<br />

stage. Remember to exit quietly.<br />

6. Do not be in the sight lines (the wings). If you can see the audience, then the audience<br />

can see you. If you have to be backstage during a performance, behave in a way<br />

that will not distract those performing on stage or in the audience.<br />

7. Be aware of your surroundings. There are objects backstage that may cause an<br />

accident. Be very careful when moving around the backstage or in the hallway.<br />

8. Props should only be handled by people using them in a performance or by<br />

designated Prop Crew members. You are expected to respect all part of the scenery<br />

in every production.<br />

9. Any costumes and/or props used need to be removed from the stage area at the end<br />

of the piece and returned to their assigned place. Remember to pick-up anything<br />

(clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.) used during warm-up.<br />

10. No performers are allowed in front of the theater, in the lobby area (hallways) or in the<br />

audience before or during the performance.<br />

11. Absolutely no backstage visitors/relatives will be permitted.<br />

Dressing Room Etiquette<br />

1. Respect your working environment. The dressing rooms for the Rosita Segovia Theater<br />

are CEA classrooms. Please be respectful and do not move or remove anything you<br />

find in the room. You should also be equally respectful of any item brought into the<br />

room that belongs to your fellow artists who will be performing with you.<br />

2. You make a mess—-you clean it up! As soon as you finish your participation in the<br />

performance, put your things back in your bag. Do not wait until the end when<br />

everybody is rushing to go home. In the confusion things tend to get lost or left behind.<br />

3. Write your complete name in all your personal items.<br />

4. Respect other people’s need for concentration/privacy in the dressing room.<br />

5. No one except technical staff, performers, and faculty or staff is allowed in the dressing<br />

area.<br />

6. The audience should not see you in costume/make up before or after the<br />

performance. Remember: the illusion (magic) belongs on stage not on the street.<br />

7. If there are costume problems, tell someone involved with costumes as soon as<br />

possible so the problem can be taken care of.<br />

8. Do not eat or drink beverages (other than water) once you are in costume. On days<br />

when you have more than one performance or a very long rehearsal, snacks and<br />

water will be provided, but it is still your responsibility to care for your costume while you<br />

are eating.<br />

9. It is the responsibility of the performer to return costumes and accessories to the<br />

costume rack as soon as possible. If your costume (including any accessories) has<br />

been rented, it is not to be taken home after the production. If you have rented a<br />

musical instrument for the performance, you need to return it after your performance<br />

has been completed. The musical instrument is not to be taken home after the<br />

production. As per your rental agreement, all items checked or rented out to you must<br />

be returned in the same condition they were in before the rental. Remember you will<br />

be held responsible for loss or damage, and fees may apply.<br />

10. No instrument, costume, accessory, or prop will be rented or loaned to students<br />

without a signed agreement form on file.<br />

11. Quick costume change: You will have one of the technical staff members assisting you<br />

on this. However, it is your responsibility to lay out your costumes and accessories, while<br />

keeping them out of the way where they will not disturb others. Remember to arrange<br />

them in the order they will be put on.<br />

12. For our older students please remember your deodorant!<br />

13. No fingernail or toenail polish--not even clear.<br />

14. As per dress code guidelines, do not wear jewelry to rehearsals or performances. In<br />

addition, please do not bring any other valuables such as electronics. The<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> will not be responsible for any lost articles.<br />

Audience Etiquette<br />

1. Arrive at the Theater before ‘Curtain.’ Do not be late for a performance or you will<br />

have to wait outside the Theater’s entrance door until you are invited to come in.<br />

2. Cell phones, beepers, watch alarms and any other electronic devices should be<br />

turned off.<br />

3. The focus belongs on stage and nowhere else. No talking, eating, unwrapping of<br />

candies, etc.<br />

4. Wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or bag.<br />

5. Absolutely no food, gum or drinks are permitted in the Theater.<br />

6. Do not put your feet on your chair or on the chair in front of you.<br />

7. After intermission return to your own seat and do not take another audience member’s<br />

seat.<br />

8. No photography or recording of any kind is permitted at any performance.<br />

HISTORY<br />

Our founder, <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong>, dedicated her life to educating and guiding youth towards<br />

realizing their dreams. By comprehensively integrating the arts and academics, each<br />

student was led to discover, develop and share their unique gifts and talents.<br />

<strong>Conchita</strong>’s own history reflects this integration. At the age of 14, she graduated from the<br />

International <strong>Conservatory</strong> in Havana. Upon graduation, she continued her studies under<br />

Jasha Fischerman and Joaquin Nin, while performing in Mexico, Cuba and the U.S. This<br />

formidable pedagogue founded her own conservatory in Havana in 1933. By 1959, it had<br />

grown into an elementary school and arts conservatory with over 450 students. The late<br />

composer Ernesto Lecuona, one of Cuba’s most distinguished musicians, declared, “You<br />

were born to teach. You have the divine gift of transforming the student and accomplishing<br />

the maximum, always bringing out his personality. That is a gift from God.”<br />

Throughout the years, <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts has been blessed with<br />

excellent teachers who shared <strong>Conchita</strong>’s dedication to arts education. Past teachers have<br />

included distinguished artists such as: Rosita Segovia, Manuel Ochoa, Michael Fokine,<br />

Martha Mahr, Dulce Anaya, Elena del Cueto, Gloria Gaither, and Mariana Alvarez. We<br />

continue to have the finest teachers and professionals available working with our students.<br />

Today, <strong>Conchita</strong>’s dream is lovingly continued by her daughter, CEA and <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

Director, Maribel Z. Diaz and her granddaughters, Middle School Principal, Carol Diaz-<br />

Zubieta, and psychologist, Ana Diaz-Zubieta. <strong>Conservatory</strong> and <strong>Academy</strong> teachers—some<br />

who knew <strong>Conchita</strong>—all work together and reflect in their daily interactions with students the<br />

heart of <strong>Conchita</strong>’s legacy: “¡Ser mejor, mejor y mejor!”<br />

GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

This section provides a general overview of the <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts. It<br />

includes a description of the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s faculty, class offered as well as general guidelines<br />

of comportment and expectations. For a more detailed and specific set of guidelines, please<br />

see the Responsibilities and Requirements section starting on page 12 .<br />

Faculty<br />

Our <strong>Conservatory</strong> faculty is chosen for its excellent teaching and artistic skills and professional<br />

credentials. Each enjoys a superb reputation in their respective areas of expertise. Our<br />

teachers focus, not only on students’ progression and growth in their arts discipline, but also on<br />

nurturing individual qualities such as respect for self and others, self-discipline, pride, and<br />

responsibility. We are fortunate to avail ourselves of our teacher’s knowledge, experience, skill<br />

and caring natures.<br />

Resumes of each <strong>Conservatory</strong> teacher, including training and experience, are presented at<br />

the end of this handbook.<br />

Classes<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> classes are open to students of all ages (children, adolescents, and adults), from<br />

beginner to professional levels. In all <strong>Conservatory</strong> disciplines, level placement is made at the<br />

discretion of the department heads and faculty, based on student age and ability. All<br />

decisions are made with the student’s best interest in mind.<br />

Unlike an academic setting, students in an arts’ conservatory often remain in a level for more<br />

than one year. Of utmost importance is that our students are promoted at a pace that is<br />

appropriate to his/her proficiency in the given discipline—demonstrated by elements such as<br />

their physical strength, developmental maturity, and demonstration of the necessary<br />

knowledge base for promotion. Please do not be concerned if a student remains in a level for<br />

two or more years.<br />

Dress Code<br />

Each arts discipline has its own dress requirements. It is the student’s (and/or parent’s)<br />

responsibility to ensure that the dress code and appropriate requirements are met before<br />

entering class. Uniforms for specific disciplines are listed in the Responsibilities and<br />

Requirements section on page 19.<br />

Bags or other paraphernalia that convey inappropriate pictures or slogans are not permitted<br />

on the <strong>Conservatory</strong> premises. In addition, no clothes with inappropriate monikers may be<br />

used in any of the disciplines. Only dance shoes may be worn in dance studios and on stage;<br />

no street shoes are permitted. Furthermore, dance shoes should not be worn outdoor; this<br />

ruins your shoes and studio floors. To ensure safety, students are not to walk barefoot in the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> hallways or outdoor premises.<br />

Registration and Tuition<br />

Registration and tuition are payable in the Main Office of the <strong>Academy</strong> building. Tuition is<br />

based on one yearly fee, September through May. For your convenience, tuition may be<br />

divided into nine (9) equal monthly payments. However, please note that holidays and<br />

vacation time do not affect the monthly payment because they have been already<br />

accounted for in the yearly tuition fee.<br />

Please refer to the Tuition Sheet for a detailed listing of each discipline and the corresponding<br />

tuition. There is a $40.00 registration fee per discipline, and a $10.00 late fee, per month if<br />

tuition is not paid by the 5th of the month.<br />

Building and Theater Use<br />

Following is a list of what is expected of each arts student regarding the use of <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

facilities:<br />

• Students are not permitted in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> building or the Theater without a<br />

faculty or staff member present.<br />

• Students are not allowed to use the dance studios without a faculty or staff member<br />

present.<br />

• No chewing gum, food or beverages are allowed inside the studios, practice<br />

classrooms, dressing rooms, or Theater.<br />

• Only students actively attending <strong>Conservatory</strong> classes are allowed in the dressing<br />

rooms before and after their class.<br />

• Personal items may be left in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> dressing rooms during class hours. All<br />

personal items, including uniforms, hair accessories, dance shoes, books etc. must be<br />

kept inside a bag at all times. Do not leave any personal items unattended in the<br />

bathrooms, studios, practice classrooms, or Theater. Items left unattended or left within<br />

the <strong>Conservatory</strong> premises after <strong>Conservatory</strong> hours, will be placed in the “Lost and<br />

Found,” in the <strong>Academy</strong> and will have a $1.00 recovery fee per item. Please note that<br />

the <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is not responsible for lost items.<br />

• Do not bring valuables into the dressing rooms, dance or music studios. The <strong>Conchita</strong><br />

<strong>Espinosa</strong> <strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is not responsible for lost items.<br />

• Students are expected to respect and care for all of the facilities and property of the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong>, as well as the <strong>Academy</strong> premises, including the Theater. Misuse of<br />

facilities and/or property will result in disciplinary action, and may result in financial<br />

obligations to cover repair or replacement costs.<br />

• Instruments loaned or rented from the <strong>Conservatory</strong> are the responsibility of the<br />

student. If lost or damaged, the student is responsible for obtaining a replacement.<br />

• Any artwork on display within the <strong>Conservatory</strong> or School grounds may not be<br />

touched. Paintings, drawings, mixed media, pictures, sculptures, etc, are to be<br />

enjoyed and respected.<br />

• Respect of all written material, pictures and decorations placed on the bulletin boards.<br />

Become a “master of the Golden Rule.”<br />

Lockers and Cubbies<br />

There are a limited number of lockers in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> dressing rooms available for the use<br />

of the more advanced students. There is a yearly rental fee for the use of the lockers and only<br />

locks purchased at the <strong>Conservatory</strong> “Little Store” are allowed. Any other lock will be cut and<br />

removed.<br />

All locks must be removed and all lockers emptied by the last day of class. Maintenance will<br />

break open any locks left behind after the last day of classes and all personal items left in the<br />

lockers will be discarded.<br />

Lockers are assigned on a seniority basis. Exceptions may be made for younger students who<br />

take more than two disciplines. All students are expected to respect and care for<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> property and keep the lockers in good condition. It is important to also be<br />

espectful of your fellow artists’ belongings, especially those who do not have a locker and<br />

must leave their bags in the dressing room cubbies.<br />

Cubbies are not permanent substitutes for lockers. All items stored in cubbies during class must<br />

be removed when the student leaves for the day. Articles left behind will be taken to the<br />

school’s “Lost and Found” and there will be a $1.00 recovery fine per item.<br />

Visitors<br />

Classes are not open to visitors.<br />

• Open Classes<br />

Parents and relatives may come to a class during the week we conduct<br />

Open Classes. During Open Class Week, parents are welcome to watch their<br />

child’s class. Please refer to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Calendar for this year’s Open<br />

Class Week. Times and specific days will be announced a few days before<br />

the event.<br />

• Private Music Classes<br />

Students may schedule visitors to their own private music classes directly with<br />

their teachers at any time during the year.<br />

Progress Reports<br />

The <strong>Conservatory</strong> will give a progress report to each student each nine weeks, including an<br />

evaluation after juries have been held. Please refer to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Calendar at the end<br />

of this handbook for specific dates.<br />

Parents/Relatives of our younger students are encouraged to contact the <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

Artistic Director at any time during the year to check on their progress.<br />

Parents wishing to speak with Administration or Faculty may arrange an appointment by<br />

telephone or e-mail with the Artistic Director.<br />

Examinations and Juries<br />

Juries for Dance and Theater<br />

At the end of the school year, dance and theater students will be evaluated by a panel<br />

consisting of, but not limited to, the teacher, Head of the Department, Artistic Director and the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> Director. This process is very important in evaluating the student’s growth, level<br />

of commitment, and goals.<br />

The panel’s grade for the student’s performance the day of the evaluation is only a part of the<br />

overall final grade. The student’s work in class during the course of the year and his or her<br />

participation in rehearsals and performances will be discussed by the jury and will be reflected<br />

in the final grade.<br />

Students who are unable to participate in the jury evaluation due to injury, illness or other<br />

specific circumstances leading to an excused absence, will be scheduled for a conference<br />

with faculty to discuss their progress and goals. They will be given a grade of Incomplete (due<br />

to medical reasons or other circumstances). Students who have an unexcused absence on<br />

the day of the jury evaluation will meet with faculty to discuss goals for the following semester,<br />

and if such goals are not met, the student will be referred to the <strong>Conservatory</strong> Director for<br />

further action. An unexcused absence during the jury evaluations will lead to a substantially<br />

lowered or failing grade for the semester and placement “on probation” status.<br />

Juries for Music<br />

At the beginning of the second semester the music students will be evaluated by a panel<br />

consisting of but not limited to the teacher, Head of the Department, and the Director. This<br />

process is very important for evaluating the student’s growth, level of commitment, and goals.<br />

The student will be assigned material to prepare for the jury meeting that will reflect work done<br />

in and outside of their class during the course of the year. The student’s progress in class and<br />

his/her participation in rehearsals and performances during the <strong>Conservatory</strong> year will be<br />

discussed during the jury evaluation. Observation of the student during the jury evaluation<br />

and impressions of the student’s progress by his/her corresponding teacher will be reflected in<br />

the final grade.<br />

Examinations for Martial Arts<br />

The progress for Martial Arts students is determined by their ability to meet the requirements for<br />

each “belt.” Advancing to the next “belt” is not necessarily achieved at the end of the school<br />

year.<br />

Examinations for Visual Arts<br />

The body of work the student has produced during the school year (portfolio), his or her<br />

behavior in class, and participation in showcases determine his or her final grade.<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> “Crew”<br />

Students 12 years of age and older may volunteer to serve as part of a team that will volunteer<br />

in special projects for the <strong>Conservatory</strong>.<br />

Parents for the Arts (PFA)<br />

The <strong>Conservatory</strong> is fortunate to have enthusiastic, dedicated parents who are eager to<br />

extend their children’s education by supporting of the <strong>Conservatory</strong> and its activities. PFA<br />

helps year-round with coordinating cultural field trips, decorating <strong>Conservatory</strong> hallways, fundraising,<br />

and general support of students and teachers. The PFA provide assistance during the<br />

preparatory stages and on the day of <strong>Conservatory</strong> performances, competitions and the CEA<br />

Festival of the Arts. To sign up to be a PFA member, please fill out our PFA Volunteer Form.<br />

These are distributed at <strong>Conservatory</strong> meetings.<br />

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS<br />

The Festival of the Arts is the crowning achievement of the talent,<br />

effort and dedication of our <strong>Conservatory</strong> teachers and students.<br />

It is a privilege to be part of the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s most cherished<br />

tradition. From the selection of its theme, the careful planning of<br />

the choreography, music selection, and scripting of every role,<br />

dedication, and growth the students have shown in class.<br />

The Festival of the Arts takes place on even years, usually in May, at the Miami-Dade County<br />

Auditorium. Tickets go on sale approximately a month before the performance. Performances<br />

throughout the year and the classwork itself, prepare our students for this outstanding evening.<br />

It is expected that all <strong>Conservatory</strong> students and their families attend the Festival. Part of the<br />

process of learning a discipline is learning from performances. Watching the more<br />

experienced students on stage gives the less experienced students a glimpse of what they will<br />

be able to achieve with perseverance and dedication to their art.<br />

The Festival is not just for the participants’ family and friends. It is an event that is open to the<br />

community and the whole CEA family. We are called to continue this very dear part of<br />

<strong>Conchita</strong>’s legacy.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS<br />

The arts are an integral part of a complete education. They enhance our<br />

social, mental and physical health. They develop our visual skills,<br />

sharpen the development of motor skills and coordination, and satisfy<br />

our spiritual need to create and share beauty. The <strong>Conchita</strong> <strong>Espinosa</strong><br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> of the Arts is comprised of a comprehensive performing<br />

and fine arts program that facilitates student participation in the world of<br />

music, dance, theater, and the visual and martial arts, where each<br />

student can learn, feel valued, and develop his or her unique talents and<br />

abilities.<br />

We, the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s administration and faculty, believe that exposure<br />

and involvement in the arts promote the acquisition of knowledge,<br />

understanding, and commitment to that which is so essentially and<br />

beautifully human. We are committed to ensuring a learning<br />

environment that is respectful, orderly, supportive and safe.<br />

We also believe that it is only through your personal commitment and<br />

passion that you will be able to achieve your full creative potential. The<br />

following are your key responsibilities:<br />

Attendance Policy<br />

Focus and discipline are necessary for a student to maintain quality development as an artist<br />

and a person. Therefore, consistent attendance is essential. If a student is injured, he or she<br />

should attend class by watching and not be taken home early or stay in after-school.<br />

Because attendance is such a crucial part of your final grade, it is important that you<br />

understand how to maintain a good attendance record and how poor attendance adversely<br />

affects your grade, and ultimately, your chances of being promoted to the next discipline<br />

level at the end of the year.<br />

Many art lessons and projects require several class periods to complete. If a student misses a<br />

class during an art process, he/she will be missing important steps, generally resulting in an<br />

unfinished project.<br />

The following is a list of reasons for:<br />

1. Excused Absences: The student is absent for reasons that the Department considers<br />

legitimate, such as death in the family, hospitalization, or illness with a doctor’s note.<br />

Each absence will be reviewed on a case by case basis. The administration reserves<br />

the right to evaluate records with excessive, excused absences and determine if this<br />

will affect the student’s grade and promotion to the next level.<br />

2. Unexcused Absences: Vacations, trips, too much homework, birthdays and any other<br />

personal reason for missing class besides the ones mentioned above are considered<br />

an unexcused absence. Three (3) unexcused absences will automatically place the<br />

student on probation. A student on probation has until the end of the following<br />

semester to improve his or her attendance in order to be removed from probation. If a<br />

student does not pass probation, expulsion from the discipline may occur. Please note<br />

that students who are absent from class may be given the opportunity to make-up a<br />

missed class by taking another scheduled class with their teacher’s permission and<br />

assignment to the appropriate class.<br />

3. Early Dismissals: Students are allowed two Early Dismissals per semester per course.<br />

Permission to leave class early should be obtained from your teacher prior to class. A<br />

student should not leave class, even if given permission before class, without notifying<br />

the teacher. Please note that parents or other family member are not to interrupt a<br />

class (i.e., open the door during a class session, or signal to their child through the<br />

glass). In case of an emergency, a <strong>Conservatory</strong> monitor should be informed and they<br />

will assist you.<br />

4. Cuts: The student has been absent without the consent of a parent or guardian. When<br />

a student cuts class, the Artistic Director will notify parents. Two (2) cuts will<br />

automatically place the student on probation.<br />

5. Tardiness: Students are expected to be on time to each class consistently. Students<br />

who arrive late to a dance class miss important “warm-up” and may be asked to<br />

watch class and take notes. Three (3) tardies will automatically place the student on<br />

probation.<br />

6. Sit Down: A “sit down” occurs when a student is kept from participating in a group<br />

class and instead asked to remain in the room observing the class for reasons other<br />

than injury or illness. Three (3) Sit Downs will automatically place the student on<br />

probation.<br />

Students may asked to sit out for any of the following reasons:<br />

• student is out of uniform (consult the dress code for each class as detailed in this<br />

handbook)<br />

• student arrives late to class<br />

• student did not do homework<br />

• student did not bring the books, notebook and/or supplies required for class<br />

• student exhibits disruptive behavior in class<br />

7. Performances and Rehearsals: The same guidelines for Excused and Unexcused<br />

Probation<br />

Absences in class apply to missing a rehearsal or not participating in a performance<br />

once the student has made a commitment to be part of an event. Please read the<br />

section Rehearsals and Performances Guidelines on page 25 for more information.<br />

All <strong>Conservatory</strong> students are required to:<br />

1. Maintain a minimum grade of 80%.<br />

2. Maintain a satisfactory attendance record, which includes classes, rehearsals, and<br />

performances.<br />

3. Maintain a respectful, focused behavior in class.<br />

Any student who fails to meet any of these three criteria will be immediately placed on<br />

probation.<br />

Students on probation jeopardize their opportunity to participate in performances and their<br />

final grade for the class will be lowered by ten (10) points.<br />

A student on probation has until the end of the following semester to meet the minimum<br />

requirements in order to be removed from probation and remain in the class.<br />

Class Guidelines<br />

• Classes begin on time. Be prepared with the complete uniform, materials, supplies and<br />

homework.<br />

• Bathroom breaks are before class, not during class.<br />

• Students are responsible for keeping the studios, classrooms and the Theater in order<br />

and clean for the next class.<br />

• Students are expected to show respect for the work in progress in the <strong>Conservatory</strong> at<br />

all times. Silence in the classrooms, hallways and the bathroom areas is vital to<br />

maintain the level of concentration in the studios and the theater during classes and<br />

rehearsals. Others deserve the same respect you do.<br />

• Courtesy is an important part of professional ethics. Students are expected to show<br />

respect to classmates and property, as well as to all school personnel and equipment.<br />

Doors should not be slammed at the entrance or exit from the studios or the theater<br />

where people are working.<br />

• No food, chewing gum or beverages are allowed in the studios and/or Theater.<br />

• The <strong>Conservatory</strong> class time cannot be used for meetings, or for extracurricular<br />

activities such as school clubs or crew activities. It is the student’s responsibility to<br />

inform school teachers when they have a prior commitment in the <strong>Conservatory</strong>.<br />

• Participate fully in class. Your attitude and body language express your level of<br />

commitment. Bring to class the concentration, enthusiasm and preparation needed in<br />

a performance.<br />

• Students will thank the teacher upon completion of class.<br />

• At the end of a dance, theater or music ensemble class, it is customary to applaud the<br />

teacher as a way of saying thank you.<br />

• Cell phones owned by students should be turned off for the length of time spent in the<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong>. We request the same courtesy from parents while in the <strong>Conservatory</strong><br />

hall.<br />

Music Theory and Solfège<br />

All music students will have a group class once a week in Music Theory and Solfège (from<br />

Pre A to 5th). The student must write down in his/her notebook the day and time of his music<br />

theory and solfège class so the other music teachers are aware.<br />

It is mandatory for all students to attend their weekly class of music theory and solfège in order<br />

to be eligible to participate in final exams and recitals. Students who do not pass the final<br />

exam in music theory and solfège will receive additional review material and will be<br />

scheduled for another exam in September. Those students who are still unable to pass the<br />

exam will have to repeat the level in music theory and solfège, even if they were promoted to<br />

another level in their instrument or voice class.<br />

Class Guidelines<br />

• The student must bring his/her music books and notebook to every class.<br />

• The teacher will write in the notebook what the student has to practice. This exercise<br />

will be graded in the following class.<br />

• Parents need to sign the notebook and encourage the student to practice daily to be<br />

prepared for the next class.<br />

Attendance<br />

• Students are expected to let their teachers know in advance if they will not be able<br />

to come to class.<br />

• All music students are required to attend all concerts performed at school. If the<br />

student is not playing he/she has to be in the audience.<br />

• Once scheduled to perform, whether at CEA or outside of the school, students are<br />

expected to keep this commitment.<br />

• All parents are invited to be present in their child’s private lesson after scheduling<br />

the visit with their child’s teacher.<br />

Evaluation<br />

Each exam will consist of performing the complete program in front of a jury.<br />

The program for instruments includes:<br />

• Scales, chords, and arpeggios<br />

• Technique exercises<br />

• A study<br />

• Two musical compositions<br />

• A first-sight exercise<br />

Dance Department Dress Code<br />

Following a dress code not only promotes discipline and pride, but allows teachers to observe<br />

a student’s body placement and alignment so that accurate corrections can be made.<br />

Please note that holes in leotards, tights or shoes are unacceptable.<br />

Ballet<br />

Girls and Young Ladies<br />

Hair must be worn in a bun, away from the face. Forest green, purple, gray and black groups<br />

are to wear a professional bun (matching hairnet and hair pins according to color of hair).<br />

Pink, light blue, red, lilac, navy, and cobalt groups are to wear the bun with the corresponding<br />

hair accessory. Please note that pins are still needed to attach the bun to the head.<br />

• No jewelry is allowed.<br />

• Leotards and hair accessories are available at the <strong>Conservatory</strong> “Little Store.” The<br />

colors correspond to the particular class.<br />

• Pink tights and ballet shoes are available at Dancing Supplies Depot.<br />

• Pink, light blue, and red groups wear pink bobby socks and ballet slippers.<br />

Lyrical<br />

• Any color leotard , black tights, black spankies.<br />

• Hair in bun or ponytail. Hair must be neat and away from face.<br />

Ballet Shoes<br />

Ballet shoes should fit snugly so that no material can be pinched at the back of the heel when<br />

the foot is pointed. This means they cannot be bought with “growing room” as this does not<br />

allow the use of the correct muscles and can cause injury. Do not be tempted to use the<br />

drawstring to make the shoes “fit” as this can cause irreparable damage to the Achilles<br />

tendon at the back of the foot. Please make sure that drawstings are shortened after they<br />

have been tightened, and that they are neatly tucked inside the shoe during class and<br />

performances. The elastics should be sewn at the spot where the heel, when compressed,<br />

forms a right angle with the sides of the shoe.<br />

Tap Shoes<br />

Tap shoes should fit snugly but not tightly. If the shoes are too large, the ability to make sound is<br />

hampered and the feet can be injured. Taps should be the “screw-on” type for students of<br />

three or more years of experience. The taps should be attached tightly and checked regularly<br />

for adjustment as the screws tend to loosen through wear. Tap shoes may differ from class to<br />

class; therefore, the teacher must be consulted prior to purchasing shoes.<br />

Class is once a week, for anyone (Forest and up) who wants to exercise and gain muscle<br />

strength. It is open to different levels because this is not a technical class, but one to improve<br />

physical strength. Special balls and Thera-Bands are required. These will be available for<br />

purchase at the school. You must also bring your own yoga mat.<br />

Dance/Movement for Actors<br />

Class is designed to give actors a basic knowledge of dance steps and to develop<br />

confidence and body awareness to enhance their performance and broaden opportunities.<br />

Afro-Fusion Dance<br />

Visual Arts Department Dress Code<br />

Students enrolled in Level 1 Art (1st and 2nd Grades) are required to wear an Art Apron over<br />

their clothing available for purchase at the <strong>Conservatory</strong>’s “little store.” Students are required<br />

to wash their hands thoroughly before class.<br />

All <strong>Conservatory</strong> Art Students should come to class with a sharpened No. 2 pencil.<br />

Rehearsal and Performance Guidelines<br />

Rehearsals and performances are an integral part of the development and progression of a<br />

young artist’s technique, self-discipline, and commitment to their peers. If a student fails to<br />

attend a rehearsal due to an unexcused absence, he/she will be excluded from the<br />

corresponding performance and may receive a failing grade.<br />

The following guidelines are meant to help both, students and faculty members, work<br />

efficiently during rehearsals so that the highest artistic standards are achieved during the<br />

performance and rehearsal process.<br />

1. Once the student auditions for a production, concert, or choreography, the student<br />

makes him/herself available for the casting pool with the understanding that if chosen<br />

for the performance, he/she may not withdraw unless approved by the teacher and<br />

the Head of the Department.<br />

2. Students, parents and/or guardians are required to immediately notify the teacher if a<br />

rehearsal conflicts with previously scheduled activity. Only the teacher can give a<br />

student permission to miss a rehearsal. Do not assume that you can miss rehearsals<br />

without consequences.<br />

3. The student is expected to be on time for all scheduled rehearsals. Parents and/or<br />

guardians must notify the teacher or the Artistic Director immediately of any<br />

emergency which may cause the student to be late.<br />

4. It is important for the rehearsal/performance process that you maintain your health.<br />

Get plenty of rest, eat right and if you become ill, see a doctor immediately.<br />

5. The student must attend all final and dress rehearsals in order to be a part of a<br />

production. Do not schedule outside commitments on rehearsal days.<br />

6. Students are to come to rehearsals in the appropriate uniform for the discipline, as<br />

specified in the corresponding guidelines and described above. The only exceptions<br />

are dress rehearsals and specific written instructions from your teacher.<br />

7. No rehearsal of any kind may be held without a member of the Faculty or<br />

Administration present.<br />

8. No guests/relatives are allowed in any rehearsal unless approved by the teacher or the<br />

Administration.<br />

9. When attending a rehearsal, participants are expected to remain quiet and observe<br />

during the times that they are not working.<br />

Schedules/Calls<br />

1. Attendance is mandatory for all run-throughs, techs, dress rehearsals, and warm-ups. It<br />

is your responsibility to read all written communications from the <strong>Conservatory</strong> and/or<br />

check the <strong>Conservatory</strong> bulletin boards for all schedules. It is essential to adhere to call<br />

times given.<br />

2. Please check-in with the production director of the performance and/or stage<br />

manager upon arrival the day of a dress rehearsal and the day of the performance.<br />

Do not have anyone else do this for you. The staff needs to know you are present.<br />

3. Understudies or alternates should plan on attending all mandatory warm-ups for<br />

performances as directed by their teacher or production director.<br />

4. The stage manager is in charge of the performance backstage and all students must<br />

follow the stage manager’s instructions.<br />

Backstage Etiquette<br />

1. Only the technical staff and the performers involved in that portion of the performance<br />

need be backstage at the time a piece is being performed. If you see anyone who<br />

should not be backstage, please tell the stage manager immediately. The stage<br />

manager will take care of the situation.<br />

2. Treat running crews with respect. You cannot do the show without them.<br />

3. Neither talking nor applauding is allowed backstage. Become a “master of silence.”<br />

4. No heavy feet while exiting during black outs.<br />

5. Be careful when exiting through the backstage doors or the theater side doors and<br />

avoid slamming the doors. It breaks the entire magic and concentration created on<br />

stage. Remember to exit quietly.<br />

6. Do not be in the sight lines (the wings). If you can see the audience, then the audience<br />

can see you. If you have to be backstage during a performance, behave in a way<br />

that will not distract those performing on stage or in the audience.<br />

7. Be aware of your surroundings. There are objects backstage that may cause an<br />

accident. Be very careful when moving around the backstage or in the hallway.<br />

8. Props should only be handled by people using them in a performance or by<br />

designated Prop Crew members. You are expected to respect all part of the scenery<br />

in every production.<br />

9. Any costumes and/or props used need to be removed from the stage area at the end<br />

of the piece and returned to their assigned place. Remember to pick-up anything<br />

(clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.) used during warm-up.<br />

10. No performers are allowed in front of the theater, in the lobby area (hallways) or in the<br />

audience before or during the performance.<br />

11. Absolutely no backstage visitors/relatives will be permitted.<br />

Dressing Room Etiquette<br />

1. Respect your working environment. The dressing rooms for the Rosita Segovia Theater<br />

are CEA classrooms. Please be respectful and do not move or remove anything you<br />

find in the room. You should also be equally respectful of any item brought into the<br />

room that belongs to your fellow artists who will be performing with you.<br />

2. You make a mess—-you clean it up! As soon as you finish your participation in the<br />

performance, put your things back in your bag. Do not wait until the end when<br />

everybody is rushing to go home. In the confusion things tend to get lost or left behind.<br />

3. Write your complete name in all your personal items.<br />

4. Respect other people’s need for concentration/privacy in the dressing room.<br />

5. No one except technical staff, performers, and faculty or staff is allowed in the dressing<br />

area.<br />

6. The audience should not see you in costume/make up before or after the<br />

performance. Remember: the illusion (magic) belongs on stage not on the street.<br />

7. If there are costume problems, tell someone involved with costumes as soon as<br />

possible so the problem can be taken care of.<br />

8. Do not eat or drink beverages (other than water) once you are in costume. On days<br />

when you have more than one performance or a very long rehearsal, snacks and<br />

water will be provided, but it is still your responsibility to care for your costume while you<br />

are eating.<br />

9. It is the responsibility of the performer to return costumes and accessories to the<br />

costume rack as soon as possible. If your costume (including any accessories) has<br />

been rented, it is not to be taken home after the production. If you have rented a<br />

musical instrument for the performance, you need to return it after your performance<br />

has been completed. The musical instrument is not to be taken home after the<br />

production. As per your rental agreement, all items checked or rented out to you must<br />

be returned in the same condition they were in before the rental. Remember you will<br />

be held responsible for loss or damage, and fees may apply.<br />

10. No instrument, costume, accessory, or prop will be rented or loaned to students<br />

without a signed agreement form on file.<br />

11. Quick costume change: You will have one of the technical staff members assisting you<br />

on this. However, it is your responsibility to lay out your costumes and accessories, while<br />

keeping them out of the way where they will not disturb others. Remember to arrange<br />

them in the order they will be put on.<br />

12. For our older students please remember your deodorant!<br />

13. No fingernail or toenail polish--not even clear.<br />

14. As per dress code guidelines, do not wear jewelry to rehearsals or performances. In<br />

addition, please do not bring any other valuables such as electronics. The<br />

<strong>Conservatory</strong> will not be responsible for any lost articles.<br />

Audience Etiquette<br />

1. Arrive at the Theater before ‘Curtain.’ Do not be late for a performance or you will<br />

have to wait outside the Theater’s entrance door until you are invited to come in.<br />

2. Cell phones, beepers, watch alarms and any other electronic devices should be<br />

turned off.<br />

3. The focus belongs on stage and nowhere else. No talking, eating, unwrapping of<br />

candies, etc.<br />

4. Wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or bag.<br />

5. Absolutely no food, gum or drinks are permitted in the Theater.<br />

6. Do not put your feet on your chair or on the chair in front of you.<br />

7. After intermission return to your own seat and do not take another audience member’s<br />

seat.<br />

8. No photography or recording of any kind is permitted at any performance.<br />
