Dr. J. D. Kellogg's Headache Wafers Submitted by Joan Hyslop, Registrar Pharmaceutical powders often have an unpleasant taste to them, and this prompted the development of the "cachet" to encapsulate the powder in a measured dose that would hopefully be much easier to take. In the 1870s, Limousin of Paris produced the pharmaceutical cachet, which had two rice-paper cup-like items joined together with medicinal powder inside. Circa 1911, cachets were circular containers made from a mixture of flour (rice starch was often used as well) and water that was dried and molded into a slightly cupped round shape, with a flange around the edge. A "cachet machine" was used so that a number of them could be made at the same time. Cachet halves would be placed on the machine and be filled with pre-weighed powder via funnels. Then the flange areas would be moistened and then the other halves of the cachets would be pressed against the filled sides and they would adhere together. The closed cachets had to be properly boxed and sealed and labeled to identify what they contained. In Britain they were called Amylum Capsules (or Capsulae amylaceae). Dr. J. D. Kellogg Headache Wafers were manufactured "for the relief of Nervous, Sick and Bilious Headaches, Neuralgia, etc. Each cachet had 5 grains of powder, consisting of 35 parts Acetanilid, 9 parts sodium bicarbonate, 1 part sodium bromide and 5 parts citrated caffeine. Then the person would place the wafer on his or her tongue and swallow it down with a drink of water. The cachets are about 3 cm in diameter, and 0.6 cm thick. Dr. J. D. Kellogg's Headache Wafers were prepared by a wholesale patent medicine dealer, Northrop & Lyman Co. Ltd. of Toronto. This company apparently was also the proprietor/maker of "Dr. Kellogg's Eye Water", "Dr. J. D. Kellogg's Asthma Remedy" and "Dr. J. D. Kellogg's Catarrh Snuff". We do not know exactly when this box was produced, as there is no date on it, but it might be from the 1910s? Its suggested price was 25 cents. THE The Schoolhouse Project Submitted by Pat Farrar, Schoolhouse Project Coordinator The Retired Teachers of Ontario – Grey and the Retired Women Teachers are working together to provide the funds for a rural schoolhouse for Moreston. We are using SS#1 Derby as our inspiration. Construction will start in earnest in September. Construction technology students from Saugeen District S.S., supported by teacher, Bud Halpin will frame and clad the building. We are excited that the students of today will be helping us re-create the past for the students of tomorrow. Retired teachers are taking an active role in the project. Retired women teachers created and raffl ed a quilt raising almost $6000 for the project. The donation of heritage brick from two Owen Sound buildings means that members are working Tourism REPORT Submitted by Sarah Sales, Grey County Tourism Summer Student The tourism team has been busy as bees this spring season with many projects on the go. At the beginning of May we assisted with the 6th Annual Grey Bruce Brochure Swap at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (the picture here of Amanda Pausner, Heather Molnar, and Sarah Sales was taken at the event). The event was a huge success, with close to 75 tourism operators from around the area present. Our website has a “new” spring look and feel, check out the E-cards section for new spring cards to send out or a relaxing Grey County scene to download as your wallpaper. Sarah Sales joins our team as Summer Patrol student who will be working with the tourism vehicle this summer traveling around Grey County to festivals and events. She is coming to tourism straight out of her first year of University at Waterloo studying Legal Studies. We have our first few events for the tourism vehicle coming up quickly, including the Blues, Brews, and BBQ’s @ Blue (May 19th, 2007), The Huron Fringe Birding Festival @ MacGregor Park (May 27th, 2007), Keystone Family Fun day @ Kelso Beach (June 2nd, 2007), as well as Doors Open @ Grey Roots (June 3rd, 2007). We hope to see you at these events, out and about in Grey County. to re-claim the brick for use later. We are collecting memories of attending or teaching in rural schools. Visitors to the schoolhouse will enjoy these glimpses into the life of students years ago. Visit our display “Passport to the Past” at Grey Roots - July 30 – Aug 1. Retired teachers across Grey County are very excited about partnering with Grey Roots to provide a schoolhouse that will enhance the educational programming at the museum. Having spring under our belts and the summer season on our heels, the tourism team has also been busy planning our Annual Spring FAM (familiarization) Tour! This tour features TWO jam-packed days of fun exploring many of Grey County’s feature attractions and little known gems and is designed for front-desk tourism staff, but is available to all! On June 5th and 7th our tour bus will visit many of the towns and villages in the County including Thornbury, the Village at Blue, Hanover, Durham, Markdale, Neustadt and more! Tourism is revving up for their NEW 2007 Contest, “Getaway to Grey” which will be launched in early June. The campaign highlights scenic back roads touring and experiences for local residents and tourists alike.
