About ETDE
The Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) is a multilateral information exchange
initiative that shares a wide scope of energy science and technology information through its
primary database, the ETDEWEB World Energy Base (ETDEWEB).
ETDE was established as an Implementing Agreement in 1987 under the auspices of the
International Energy Agency (IEA) and ETDE is a key part of today’s IEA Energy
Technology Network. ETDE collaborates with non-IEA international entities, too, such as
INIS. Entities becoming signatories to the ETDE agreement are called members. ETDEWEB
(www.etde.org/etdeweb/) is accessible by member entities and Executive Committeeapproved
developing countries. See www.etde.org/organization.html for a current listing.
ETDE’s focus is to cover subjects of interest to its international audience of database users.
The information covered includes such important topics as renewable energy sources; energy
production, storage, consumption, and use; energy efficiency and conservation; energy policy
and environmental and economic aspects; end-use technology; nuclear (fission and fusion)
and fossil energy; and advanced energy systems. Coverage also includes the basic sciences
that support energy R&D, such as aspects of chemistry; engineering; physics; and
biomedical, computer, and materials science related to energy technology. Sustainability,
clean energy, and climate change aspects are also a focus. In cooperation with INIS, an
electronic version of the thesaurus in PDF format is available for downloading from the
ETDE web site on the reference aids page: www.etde.org/edb/reference.html.
About the IEA
When the International Energy Agency (IEA) was founded in 1974, the main objective of its
Member countries (29 as of 2012) was to reduce dependence on imported oil through the
development of alternative energy sources while increasing the efficiency of energy use.
More recently, concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions and globalization of energy
markets have underlined the need for international co-operation. For more than 30 years,
technology collaboration has been a fundamental building block among IEA Member and
non-member countries in facilitating progress of new or improved energy technologies. There
are currently 41 Implementing Agreements in the areas of fossil fuels, renewable energies
and hydrogen, end-use (buildings, electricity, industry and transport), fusion power and crosscutting
activities (information and modelling). For more information see www.iea.org.
