medium referred to as silverpoint is the technique of
Art
drawing with a metal stylus. Although it has been used
to inscribe surfaces since Classical times, silverpoint
— or as it is more generally called “metalpoint” — was
expressly employed in drawing from the late 14th century
up to the early 17th century and was particularly favored
in the Renaissance period in Italy, the Netherlands,
and Germany. Master artists Raphael, Durer, Holbein,
» (FOLK ART) Continued from page 1
American folk art of the 20 th century is defined by its freedom of
spirit. Not bound by the rules of an art academy or constraints of
society, the folk artist feels instinctively the fundamentals of art —
rhythm, design, balance, and proportion.
The general term “folk art” encompasses a wide range of
paintings, drawings, and sculpture made by individuals who have
not studied art formally but express through their subject matter
their life experiences, personal surroundings, and inner visions.
Grounded in craft traditions, many artists develop new art forms.
Some are motivated to create from their passionate religious
beliefs or sense of patriotism. Other folk artists, who are isolated
physically or emotionally from the cultural mainstream, produce
highly personal work known as “Outsider Art.”
With the organization of major public exhibitions and the
publication of scholarly texts in recent years, American 20 th
century folk art is now recognized as an important part of the art
history of our country. •
» (SILVERPOINT) Continued from page 2
used silverpoint in drawing studies.
Koo Schadler, co-curator writes, “The ubiquitous pencil (a piece
of graphite placed inside a hollow tube of wood) wasn’t an option
for a Renaissance draftsman — it hadn’t been invented yet.
Instead most early artists learned to draw using a nib of metal
stuck in a stylus. Copper, gold, lead, and other metals were used,
but a silver point was the most popular.”
Through the concerted efforts of a growing number of
contemporary artists, this medium is today enjoying its own
Renaissance, as realist artists are finding new ways to explore,
refine and make it their own.
The Evansville Museum, as an internationally recognized
champion of contemporary realism, is proud to partner with this
group of artists who are producing realist work in another, less
traditional media. •
Antique Washing Machine is Welcomed
Addition to rivertown Kitchen
The kitchen in Rivertown USA is now home to
a “new” washing machine. Donated by Betty
Boetticher, this washer was distributed by
Boetticher & Kellogg Company — a longtime
Evansville business. Known as “rock-a-bye”
style scrubbers, these types of machines were
produced from the 1860s through the early
1900s. The washer bears the name Eureka and
may have been made by the
Eureka Company of Rock
Falls, Illinois, though many
companies produced this
type of device.
The wholesale firm
of Boetticher &
Kellogg Company
was founded in 1863
by Edward Boetticher and
Charles Kellogg. (Hiram Wells was
also a partner in the business for
four years.) Wholesaling was a
prosperous business in Evansville
in the mid-19 th century as goods
came through the City’s bustling
river port for resale into the
interior of the state. Primarily
In the Winter and early Spring of 2009,
the Evansville Museum celebrated the
bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth
through special programs and exhibitions.
The programs included the lectures
Abraham Lincoln: Private Man, Public
Leader by Dr. Matthew Pinsker, at left,
of Dickinson College and Remembering
Abraham Lincoln’s Indiana Youth by Mr.
William e. bartelt, at center, of Newburgh.
Thomas Lonnberg, the Evansville Museum’s
Curator of History, is pictured with Pinsker
and Bartelt.
William Bartelt and his wife Kathryn, in
partnership with The James N. Ruthenburg
Family, sponsored the exhibition Lincoln
Remembered. Bartelt also provided the
majority of the objects for the exhibition
The Popular Lincoln.
importers and wholesalers of hardware, Boetticher &
Kellogg also dealt in cutlery, firearms, and other goods.
The firm grew throughout the late 19 th and early 20 th
centuries and experienced various changes. Originally
located on First Street, Boetticher & Kellogg moved to a
four-story warehouse with 80,000 square feet of office and
storage space at 1–13 South Fulton Avenue in 1920. In
1947, after decades of leadership from the Boettichers and
Kelloggs, a non-family member assumed management of
the firm as John F. Kirwer, who started with the company at
the age of seventeen, became president.
In the 1950s, the company boasted nearly 20 traveling
salesmen with total employment of over 100 people.
Though employment dropped to 75 workers by the 1980s,
Boetticher & Kellogg continued to distribute over 24,000
products ranging from hardware to sporting goods and
automobile accessories.
After over 130 years of operation, Boetticher & Kellogg
ceased operation in the mid 1990s and its distinctive
building that bore a famous high water mark from the 1937
flood was razed as part of the Casino Aztar development.
Co-chairs for this year’s Trustees Gala, Jack Faber,
President of the Evansville Museum Contemporaries,
and Jeffrey H. bosse, that organization’s immediate
Past President, will join a Committee from the
Contemporaries Board in planning the evening.
Because of the Museum’s major expansion project, this
year’s November event will be held in the Ballroom of
the Evansville Country Club.
Headlining that evening’s festivities will
be a cabaret performance by the popular
singer brenda Williams. The multi-talented
Indianapolis-based performer — perhaps best
remembered for her starring roles in American
Cabaret Theatre productions — has appeared
throughout the United States and has been an opening act for
such celebrated entertainers as Ray Charles, The Beach Boys,
Lee Greenwood and Chuck Mangione and is equally at home
interpreting songs from Broadway to Motown to the Blues.
Closer to time, Members will be receiving personal invitations
with more details about this exciting evening presented to
benefit the Museum’s General Operating Fund. •
remembering Past Presidents
Although Evansville’s first museum was instituted in the latter part of the 19 th
Century, it was incorporated under its present name in 1926.
Well-known attorney Paul H. Schmidt (left) became the Evansville Museum’s first
President in 1926 and retained that post for 25 years. Now in his 34 th year as the
Museum’s Director, John Streetman recalls that he had “the pleasure of knowing
all of the Museum Presidents except Schmidt and Dr. Charles Leich,” who were
deceased by the time Streetman came to Evansville in 1975. “With their varied
personalities and singular gifts,” Streetman said, “each of our Presidents has
contributed importantly to the rich fabric of this institution’s history.”
All of the 18 living past Presidents and their spouses are being invited to be honored
guests at what promises to be a memorable celebration. •

keeping Up with the Docents
This is proving to be an unusually busy year for Evansville Museum Docents. We
welcomed two new members (1), Harold Morgan and bob Levi, whose depth of
knowledge and enthusiasm nicely complement our ranks. They are seen to the left
with Docent Training Coordinator Madeleine Schmitt at the Spring Membership
Meeting at which they received their official badges.
We’ve received training on several exhibits, including the exciting Darwin exhibit by
Mitch Luman, and on the outstanding New Dutch Realism show by Mary Bower. In
addition, we were given an inside look at the two Lincoln exhibits by Tom Lonnberg.
Stephanie Gerhardt also took us through our annual Emergency training.
The mission of the Docent Association
is to support the programs of the
Education Department and as part of
that we always man a table at the annual
Vogel Art Fair. This year we had a great
time making paper flowers with the
Vogel students. Pictured (2) are Paula
riggs, left, and bonnie Noe, right.
Museum Camp gave us an opportunity
to unveil the new “Unlocking the
Secrets of Ancient Egypt” outreach
program. This project has been a true
labor of love and many thanks to the
team members who made this a reality.
Campers were invited to participate in
the mummification of the honorable
Emahshotep (Evansville Museum of
Arts, History, Science + hotep, which
means “he who comes in peace”).
Corinne Smith developed a “back
story” for Emahshotep to provide
a context for our dearly departed
royal son. Campers eviscerated and
wrapped the mummy that was created
by Sarah Karges and then placed him
in a beautiful sarcophagus painted by
Connie McConaughy (3). A costumed
Corinne Smith (4) showed the back of
the sarcophagus lid featuring the sacred
scarab beetle.
In order for the “ba”, or soul to recognize
the correct body in the afterlife Andrea
Wannemuehler created his funerary
mask patterned after the one we have
in the Museum. Several “ushabti” were
added to do the work in the afterlife.
Feeding the “ka” or lifeforce in the
afterlife was not forgotten as several
Egyptian foods were added to the tomb.
Lois O’Neill hand-made our mummy’s
heart, as well as a fig and a cucumber
that look good enough to eat. After
Emahshotep was laid to rest the campers
were divided into groups or “families” to
plan the funeral of their “Uncle Drumses”,
and were given 200 bushels of grain with
which to barter the funerary services.
They had to make difficult choices
among such services as amount of linen
wrapping, plain or fancy canopic jars, the
number of ushabti, and spells from the
Book of the Dead. They then shared their
decisions and the reasoning for them.
One group opted to only spend 145
bushels on the funeral because “Uncle
Drumses” was not very nice to them!
Many Docents participated in Museum
Camp. In the Rivertown kitchen (5)
are bonnie Noe on the left, and Lois
O’Neill on the right, who donned their
Sunday best for History Day.
The Docent Association has also been
actively working on other outreach
programs, including an art video
featuring two young, local working
artists; a history outreach focusing on
pioneer life; an adaptation of our pre-K
and First Look puppet shows; and an
update of our first grade Discovery
outreach program. We are also planning
to put together a science program to take
into the schools.
Being a Docent at the Evansville
Museum is so much fun and very
rewarding, and I want to take this
opportunity to invite you to join us!
Our annual Welcome Coffee will be
August 24 and all who are interested
in learning about becoming a docent
can get more information by calling
The Winter 2009 edition of COPIA
was awarded a gold Addy from the
American Advertising Federation
of Greater Evansville. The Addy
Awards represent the true spirit of
creative excellence by recognizing
sizes and entrants of all levels from
anywhere in the world.
The American Advertising
Federation, a not-for-profit industry
association, conducts the ADDY
Awards through its 200 member
advertising clubs and 15 districts. It
is the only creative awards program
administered by the advertising
industry for the industry.
Matt Wagner:
Designer for All Seasons
We’ve come a long way since the days of black-and-white CoPiAs to
the splendid full-color members magazines that we all enjoy today.
This amazing transformation is due in no small measure to the
singular gifts of our Tucker Publishing Group designer Matt Wagner.
This Spring, Matt’s talents were recognized when he and Tucker
Publishing Group received a Gold Addy Award in the Advertising for
the Arts Category from ACe (the Advertising Club of Evansville).
This most highly coveted honor among area design professionals
specifically recognized the Winter issue of CoPiA with the
Contemporary Dutch painter Dennis Mogelgaard’s handsome
Still-life with Lemons and Pears on its cover — widely thought among
this magazine’s readers to be the most splendid issue the Museum has
ever published.
But this extraordinary young artist’s partnership with the Museum
does not stop there. In fact, virtually all of the catalogues, invitations,
outdoor banners, flyers and brochures that so richly complement our
programs are the product of Wagner’s distinctive creativity.
Such is the substance of his abilities that, although we sought out-ofstate
design for the first six hardbound books we published, our three
most recent ones — Objects of Desire: The Art of Frederick Carder
(2005), Rites, Rituals & Celebrations: The Photographs of Al Harding
(2006), and Object Project (2007) were all designed by Matt Wagner.
One need only peruse these handsome publications to appreciate the
scope of his abilities.
It seems long overdue that we offer our hearty thanks to a truly
exceptional artist for his continuing contributions to helping the
Evansville Museum put its best foot forward. •
– John Streetman, Director

Annual Report
January 1 – December 31, 2008
2008 proved to be one of the most important in the
Museum’s 105-year history. At a press conference on May
23, Museum officials unveiled plans for a $15 million
expansion and renovation project that would substantially
enhance our programming and presence as a leading
cultural and educational institution in the Tri-State
community. This multi-faceted plan to expand our facilities,
anchoring the south end of the City’s riverfront, has been
designed by VPS Architecture of Evansville and RATIO
of Indianapolis to complement recent exciting downtown
development and provide an even more dynamic Museum
for the citizens of the Tri-State.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of Reaching for the
Stars Campaign Chair Rita Eykamp and her Cabinet of
distinguished community leaders, we were, by year’s end,
already well on the way to reaching our goal.
Concurrent with those special efforts, the Museum
continued to showcase a wide variety of significant
art exhibitions from celebrated fashion designer and
Evansville native Halston to the sculpture of Rodin.
History exhibits would recall the story of Evansville’s
fabled Mesker Steel and remember Evansville citizens
who were POWs in World War II. Our Science
Department would explore the history of psychology;
how robots work; and the consequences of a global
dependence on oil.
In each gallery there is a Visitor’s Comment Book. We
never cease to be encouraged by the number of visitors
who take time to write down their thoughts – often
lengthy notes — about how they have been informed and
inspired by something they have seen.
None of these successes would be possible, however,
without the ongoing support of our Board of Trustees,
exceptional Staff, and a legion of devoted volunteers who
help us put our best foot forward for an ever-growing and
changing audience.
– John streetman, Director

Financial Report
In this Annual Report, we are proud to acknowledge the generous
patrons and volunteers whose valuable support enabled our
institution to fulfill its mission and vision throughout 2008 while
ensuring that the year concluded with a balanced budget.
Achieving this challenging goal during the current economic
downturn would not have been possible without the stewardship
of our Board of Trustees, the counsel of our Advisory Council, the
dedication of the Guild and Contemporaries, the commitment of
our Docents, the generous financial support from corporations,
foundations, individuals and Membership, and the enthusiasm of our
strong corps of volunteers.
Additional sources of support in 2008 were provided through federal,
state and local funding; investment income; miscellaneous earned
monies; special fundraising events; program fees; classes; tours;
planetarium shows; and room rentals; as well as donations of in-kind
services and materials from individuals and businesses.
DOCeNTS are Museum ambassadors
who perform one of the most
important and far-reaching functions
in a museum: they create an experience
that is as intriguing to children as it is
enlightening to adults. These special
volunteers have in-depth knowledge
visitors in the interpretation of art,
history and science through tours and
In 2008, our Docents led 411 tours for
Were the Apollo visits to the Moon actually a
hoax? Have aliens ever landed on Earth? Can
you tell your future by the stars? Prepare to tackle
pseudoscience head-on with the new planetarium
show bAD Astronomy: myths AnD
misConCePtions.
Dr. Phil Plait
Presented in partnership with the
JANe brOWNe PeTerSeN FuND,
the June 6 – August 23 planetarium
program is based on the popular
book and website of the same name.
Astronomer Dr. Phil Plait is the
Bad Astronomer. He’s not a subject
of the show and he’s not a “bad”
astronomer — Dr. Plait just can’t stand
to see bad astronomy in the movies, in
commercials, and generally anywhere in
our popular culture.
Bad Astronomy offers a unique and fun approach
to learning about the cosmos. The Bad Astronomer
himself will serve as our guide while offering a
critical but light-hearted look at popular myths and
misconceptions, revealing to audiences how science
can be used to evaluate questionable claims. In
order to set the record straight, Dr. Plait debunks
urban legends such as the faked Moon landing,
alien visits to Earth, and horoscopes that can
predict your future.
Presentations of Bad Astronomy will be offered in
the Koch Planetarium Tuesday – Sunday at 1:00
p.m. Our Summer program is a production of the
Dassault Systèmes Planetarium in Detroit. •
Show visits the
world-Class
Telescopes of hawaii
Come with us to Hawaii as we visit the mountaintop
where some of the largest and most productive telescopes
on the planet are located. Our Fall show, eXPLorers
of mAunA keA, presented in partnership with the
JANe brOWNe PeTerSeN FuND, transports
viewers on a voyage across space and time with
Polynesian navigators and astronomers as we celebrate
the spirit of human exploration.
Explorers of Mauna Kea was produced by the Bishop
Museum Planetarium in Honolulu in partnership with
NASA. In the show, audiences will learn how ancient
Polynesian voyagers used the stars to navigate the Pacific
thousands of years ago. The program also examines the
work being carried out by astronomers on the summit of
Mauna Kea, home of the largest telescope in the world.
Presentations of Explorers of Mauna Kea take place each
Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. from August 26 –
November 29. Admission is free to Members with the
presentation of a valid Membership Card. •

Museum’s Resident
Turtles Find New home
Long popular with guests of all ages, the Evansville Museum’s
resident box turtles have embarked upon a new adventure.
With their terrarium home slated to be removed during the
impending renovation project, the turtles were in need of new
accommodations. Happily, Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve
rolled out their welcome mat. The turtles, protected in the state
of Indiana, have moved to the nature center at 551 N. Boeke
Road, where fans and friends can see them on display at their
new home. •
that bring warmth and light to the coldest and darkest season of the year. Along with
a look at seasonal traditions, the show also details Winter constellations and examines
astronomical explanations for “the Star of Bethlehem”. •
Science Explainer Exceeds 500
hours Of Service
Science Explainer Abby rizen was honored at the High School Art Show Opening
Reception on March 19 for a rare accomplishment, logging more than 500 volunteer
hours. While it is quite an achievement in itself to reach 500 hours, Abby didn’t stop there.
She had stacked up an impressive 624 hours by the night of the reception. The Science
Staff created a new level of recognition just for her, by adding a silver star to her gold badge
to signify the additional 100 hours she’d served!
Abby, a junior at Bosse High School, joined the Explainer program in August of 2004.
During the Fall of 2006, she participated in a special demonstration program entitled
Fashions to Die For, which was designed as a complement to the Museum’s presentation of
Lauren Greenfield’s Girl Culture. Abby received the 2006 Exceptional Performance Award
which honors a Science Explainer who goes above and beyond the call of duty during the
preceding year of service. Thank you for all that you do, Abby, and congratulations! •
Fall Brings a visitor
From the Past
Few artifacts are as mysterious and captivating as
Egyptian mummies, and Museum guests will have a
chance to meet one this Fall. the ChiLD mummy,
brought to Evansville under a special arrangement with
the St. Louis Science Center, will be on display October
27 - November 29.
The St. Louis Science Center worked closely with an
internationally-known anthropologist from Florida
State University and a mummy specialist at The
