Arthur W. Arundel 

1928 – 2011 

Take a moment to gaze across the open fields 

in front of you. The lush pastures and woods 

are breathtaking, aren’t they? Isn’t it 

remarkable that in the thousands of acres you 

see, there is only a barn and silo in your 

immediate field of view? 

This is the view shed of Great Meadow and 

the vision of founder, Arthur Windsor “Nick” 

Arundel. To him, Great Meadow was the ideal 

platform to promote all of Virginia’s finest 

resources. And so, he spent more than 25 

years furthering that belief. Today, Great 

Meadow proudly hosts the jewel of Virginia 

racing, The Virginia Gold Cup and 

International Gold Cup. But also a calendar 

full of polo matches, wine festivals, rocketry 

competition, Scottish games, 5K runs, and a 

gigantic July 4 th celebration. All told, more than 

40 events that draw an estimated 

150,000 through our gates annually. 

Early this year, we lost our founder, but not 

his vision that goes on in perpetuity. Today of 

all days, remember Nick Arundel for his 

vision, his indomitable spirit, and for the 

fantastic gift he and his family have given us 

all for generations to come.

NATIONAL ANTHEM 

Angela Knight is in her 12th season with the 

Washington National Opera where she performs 

regularly and has sung in over 250 performances. 

Her most recent roles include “Idomeno” - The 

Cretan Woman, “The Crucible” - Betty Paris, “Le 

Nozze Di Figaro” - Barbarina, and Second Lady 

in “Sly” for U.S. and Japanese audiences. Miss 

Knight attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, 

The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and George 

Mason University where she was honored as the 

Outstanding Musician at graduation. 

In June 2007, she graduated from the Living 

Faith Ministry Training Center. She is a two-time winner of the NATS singing competition. 

After winning the Star Alliance Competition, Angela traveled to Beijing, China 

in December 2007 to perform her originally composed aria “Le Jardin” at the “Great 

Hall” for The Prime Minister of China, worldwide delegates, dignitaries, and government 

officials. Being chosen to represent the United States as a vocalist in the 2007 

“World Championship of Performing Artist,” she traveled to Hollywood, California to 

compete where she won three gold medals. 

Also in August 2007, she took her originally composed stage show/concert 

“Giubileo” to Sicily, Italy. And in 1009 Angela was nominated for the ICM New Artist 

of the Year Award. 

She was recently featured as the guest artist to represent the Washington Opera 

at the Kennedy Center’s season opening. She has had solo appearances at the U.S. 

Capitol, The Lincoln Memorial and The Sylvan Theatre in Washington D.C. 

Angela traveled to Japan with the Washington Opera, to Frankfurt Germany to 

sing on a USO tour for the United States Armed Forces and to Calabria, Italy as guest 

soloist at a theological convention. She was chosen to sing the National Anthem for 

President George W. Bush at the National Republican fundraiser in Washington D.C. 

and has sung the National Anthem numerous times for the Washington Redskins. 

Her most recent engagement was December 21st, 2008. She was guest soloist at 

the Montefiore Hospital of New York fundraiser in Greenwich Connecticut and the 

Leukemia Foundation Fundraising Gala in Washington D.C. 

She performed a fundraising concert for St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 

in Westlake, Ohio and performed a benefit concert in Nokesville, VA in September 

2007 to honor local firefighters. In October, 2007 she premiered and released her first 

CD, «Giubileo,» of original Christian songs that she composed. 

She is a teaching artist for the Washington National Opera and represents them 

in the Northern Virginia region. Angela is giving back to the community by giving 

private piano and voice lessons to young artists. 

Angela resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, Wade, and daughter, 

Marinna.

1. Name of Race: 

Most races are named after a sponsor or after a person or horse who has 

been active in steeplechasing in the past. 

2. Purse: 

The purse is the total value of the race winnings. Normally, it is divided among 

the top five placers with 60% going to first, 20% to second, 11% to third, 6% 

to fourth, and 3% to fifth. 

3. Conditions of the race: 

Conditions ensure that horses are evenly matched in a race and established 

eligibility requirements and basis for weight assignment. A maiden race is for 

horses that have never won at a sanctioned meeting. In a claiming race, any 

licensed owner or trainer can claim an entered horse for the set claiming price 

stated in the program providing they are eligible. An allowance race centers 

on a horse’s past performance or its earnings. A horse is allowed to carry less 

weight if it has won fewer times or won less money than the other competitors. 

In a handicap race, the track’s racing secretary, who writes the conditions 

for every race, assigns weights for the horses to carry. The superior horse, 

determined by its past performance is given the “high weight” while others 

carry less, according to their level of ability. The objective being all horses 

should be equal at the finish. 

4. Weight: 

How much weight a horse carries in a race is partly determined by its age and 

sex. Three-year-olds carry less weight than older horses. Females (known as 

fillies or mares) carry less than males (known as colts or geldings). When a 

reduction is allotted to a horse, it is termed an allowance and is determined 

by the Scale of Weights. 

5. Distance and Jumps: 

This states the distance and type obstacle to be jumped. Races are measured 

in units called furlongs. A furlong equals 220 yards or one-eighth of a mile. 

There are two types or steeplechase fences. National Fences consist of a 

steel frame, artificial brush and a foam rubber “take-off” covered by a heavy 

tarpaulin. A Timber Race is over a course of obstacles which are made of 

natural wood rails, logs, or boards, normally four or five rails in height. 

6. Number of Competitor: 

This number corresponds with the number carried on the horse’s saddlecloth. 

7. Silks: 

To help you quickly identify horses and determine their position during the 

race, jockeys wear uniquely patterned nylon shirts called silks, referring to the 

days when they were made of that material. Silks are one-of-a-kind registered 

to that owner alone. 

8. Information about the horse: 

1. The first abbreviation stands for the horse’s color. 

B. (Bay) Bl. (Black) Ch. (Chestnut) Dk.b. or br. (Dark Bay or Brown) Gr. 

(Grey) Ro. (Roan) 

2. The second abbreviation indicates the horses sex. f. (filly: 2-4 yr. old 

female) m. (mare: 5 and up female) g. (gelding: males that have been 

castrated) c. (colt: 2-4 yr. old uncastrated male) h. (horse: 5 and up 

castrated male) 

3. This number represents the horse’s age. All thoroughbreds share the 

same official birthday, January 1. 

4. The horse’s breeding. The sire (father) is listed first followed by the dam 

(mother). 

9. Weight to be carried: 

This number refers to the amount or weight the horse will carry. Each horse 

must carry its assigned weight, the minimum being 130 lbs. The weight 

consists of the jockey, saddle, and equipment (except the bridle) plus 

whatever lead weight is used to reach the specified weight the horse is 

assigned to carry.

Safety: 

Always a Top Priority 

The National Steeplechase Association places its highest 

priority on assuring the safety of steeplechase athletes, 

both equine and human. The National Steeplechase 

Association, its race meets and its horsemen undertake 

significant actions to assure a racing surface of the 

highest quality and take proactive steps to minimize the 

chances of injury. Regrettably, accidents will occur, but 

important actions have been taken to prevent them. Some 

of those proactive steps are: 

• Frequent safety inspections of the racecourses, 

and the presence of a designated safety adviser at 

the race meets; 

• Aggressive, year-round turf care of our 

race-meet courses, which in some cases includes 

state-of-the-art watering systems and maintenance 

programs found more often at golf courses or other 

venues; 

• Pre-race physical examinations by experienced, 

licensed equine veterinarians to determine whether 

the horses are sufficiently fit and sound to compete in 

a demanding athletic competition; 

• Post-race medication testing to assure that no 

prohibited substances are present in the horse and 

that permitted medicines are within regulatory 

limits; and 

• Presence of a well-equipped equine ambulance on 

the course during the races, with an official 

veterinarian on duty to evaluate and direct the 

treatment of any injuries. Also, an ambulance is 

present with trained medical personnel to care for 

a jockey or jockeys injured in a race.
