Member Norm
Corness has again donated
a substantial
amount of CN artifacts
for display at Wainwright
Rail Park. Included
in his latest donation
are passenger car
signs, advertising posters,
employee timetables
from the 1960s, a public
timetable from 1948,
more maintenance and
ICS manuals in addition
to other paper items.
Norm has agreed to loan a steam locomotive
headlight and number plate
from CNR 3803 and some other items
for display this year.
Also on loan are a portion of his extensive
photo collection. Norm is allowing
us to scan his photos and write them
to a CD for research. We will access more
of Norm’s photo collection as time permits.
George Carpenter, of Menlo Park,
California, has provided several of his
Wainwright area photos to the WRPS.
George grew up at Kinsella, AB, where
his father was the Station Agent in the
1950s. We first met at a CN Special Interest
Group Convention in Prince
George, BC in 1999. George worked for
CN’s Engineering Department and was
$2700 Grant
A grant in the amount of $2727.09has
just been received from the Community
Lottery Board. This grant will go toward
the purchase of a mower and other tools
for park maintenance.
A better mower was required than the
belly mower purchased with the tractor
last year because belt and blade replacement
was becoming expensive.
Phil Valleau has received information
on several three-point hitch mowers, and
a decision on which to purchase will be
made soon.
with our work.
CN Retires F Units
Donation Requested
With CN’s acquisition of Wisconsin
Central (WC) approved, the railway has
begun to purge their roster of older locomotives.
Among the items retired recently are
WC1750 to 1756, former CN/VIA FP9A
units, and WC1761, 1762, 6602 and
6606, former CN/VIA F9B units.
A previous letter to CN Senior Vice
President Jack McBain requested the donation
of a GP9 stored in Montreal or one
of two switchers stored in Winnipeg. CN
has now been advised that one of the recently
retired FP9As would be the preferred
acquisition. It would look spectacular
when paired with our existing B
unit 6861.
We are hopeful that CN will consider
donating one of these locomotives to the
Wainwright Railway Preservation Society.
