Blue, forest-ringed Eel Lake is one of a chain of freshwater jewels
just east of the coastline. Its waters are perfect for fishing,
swimming, canoeing, sailing and boating (10 m.p.h. speed limit).
Besides a boat ramp, park facilities include a fishing dock modified
for use by anglers with disabilities. You can catch both bass and
rainbow trout from the dock as well as from a boat. The lake,
which has a good population of largemouth bass (some weighing
as much as five pounds), also supports crappie, steelhead and
coho salmon. All coho caught must be released.
A trail around the south end of the lake allows hikers to escape
the developed area of the park and explore the lake’s many inlets.
You may see osprey, crane, eagle, deer and other forest creatures
as you walk through stands of spruce, cedar, fir, and alder.
Lakeside, about a mile south of Tugman, offers resort facilities
on the shore of Tenmile Lake.
The original Umpqua River Lighthouse was the first
lighthouse commissioned on the Oregon coast. It was built
on the north spit of the Umpqua River in 1857 and destroyed
in 1861 when it fell into the river following a severe storm.
Today’s lighthouse, with its 65-foot tower, overlooks adjacent
dunes from a 165-foot elevation on the south side of
Winchester Bay. Its lens emits distinctive red and white
automated flashes.
The lighthouse structure and museum are maintained by the
Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department. Tours
run May 1 through September 30. Call (541) 271-4631 for
current schedules and information. The lighthouse stands
next to Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, which also offers
camping, a few miles north of William Tugman State Park.
