Tires of Volkswagen Golf get bigger
as the model changes. Unnoticed, it
has got to 16 inches (205/55 R 16). 12
summer tires took part in this test.
From the viewpoint of today,
dry and small wheel of the original
Golf is as narrow as the cutting blade
of the asphalt and pitiful to see. It is
unbelievable that the tire like a round
cut sausage could support the vehicle.
However, it really did. Moreover, it
was successful. That‘s because the
13-inch wheel did not show any problem
which was equipped with
155er-standard rubber for 780kg of
vehicle weight.
Compared with this, test car Golf VI
TSI could be called “fatty“. This vehicle
weighs 1,386Kg which is equipped
with DSG, ventilation units, 7 airbags,
rear camera, automatic windows
and numerous electric motors
used for seat adjustment. The narrow
tire of the original Golf would be broken.
That weight is unendurable for
it.
“Stefan Küster, director of Pirelli tire
performance test department said,
Which is the best tire?
“Naturally, there is no other things except
air within the tires which support
the vehicle. Heavier vehicle only
needs thicker air layer than lighter vehicle.“
The weight, more than anything
else, is the main reason why
tires have got bigger and broader as
model changes.
Golf VIs are currently equipped with
205/55 R 16 tires. 12 products
stood at the starting line in order for

test. Vector 4 Seasons, four-season
tire of Goodyear also participated in
the test. The result of this 16-inch test
was rather weak compared with the
glorious success of the 195/65 R 15
size which was tested last time. Grip
was insufficient on wet surface and
for the braking on dry surface it slipped
a fatal distance.
Indian-made new product from
Apollo could hardly work well. At the
time of braking on the wet surface, it
slipped longer than 15m, which is additional
braking distance. Peter
Becker, technical director of Marke
Apollo, said “Tested Acelere Sportz is
not suitable for the current product
standard any longer. From the 2nd
quarter in 2009, our tires will show
greatly improved performance to Europe.“

searching for the optimal tire for your
Golf II 21 years ago. 175/70 R 13 used for
compact cars as standard in 1988 could
be said a flat from the viewpoint of today.
185/60 R 14 of long-run Golf III and
195/65 R 15 of Golf IV / V followed this
product. Other winners of 1988 test was
Continental CS21 and Dunlop SP 6.

master of fuel saving as expected. at a
guess, about 1% of fuel consumption
decreases for each 5% of rolling resistance
reduction. The fuel-saving rate of dunlop
is about 5%.
