Adventures in Dining
The Russian word “beautiful” comes
from “krasny,” Russian for “red”
Travcoa’s Dine-Around Program gives you unmatched freedom in
dining choices during your journey. Go anywhere you like — except
for alcohol and caviar — it is all included in your journey price.
In St. Petersburg, experience is as important as cuisine.
Discover both at 1913, where you’ll dine on authentic
Russian specialties such as borscht, blinis and sturgeon,
served without touristy dancing bears or posturing
gypsies. Also in St. Petersburg, Podvorye attracts a
stellar patronage — Russian Prime Minister Putin and
the Prince of Wales, to name just two — for a menu of
items such as boar ham, spiced meats and sausages, all
grilled on open fires in the courtyard.
In Moscow, Le Gastronome is one of the city’s great
restaurants. Beneath a magnificent decor of beautiful
stained glass, painted murals, and huge crystal chandeliers
you’ll be served main dishes such as grilled tuna with
wild mushrooms, Norwegian salmon with caviar, and
rack of lamb. The wine list is one of the best in Moscow.
Praga, on Arbat Square, occupies a pre-Revolutionary
building where Russia’s famed writers once dined,
among them Tolstoy and Gorki. Amid chandeliers and
gold leaf, a huge dinner menu includes whole trout or
sterlet boned tableside; stuffed carp in beet marinade;
ravioli-like pelmeni with smoked salmon filling; beef
Stroganoff; rabbit with sour cream; and on and on.
Service is formal but slow; plan on making a night of it.
