A <strong>Rideout</strong> Government will build on the strengths<br />
<strong>of</strong> the past, <strong>an</strong>d grow with <strong>new</strong> ideas. Some<br />
<strong>new</strong> initiatives include the Premier's Advisory<br />
Council, consisting <strong>of</strong> people from all walks <strong>of</strong><br />
life advising the Premier on policy decisions; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
<strong>an</strong> agency, 'Newfoundl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Labrador R<strong>an</strong>gers',<br />
to be established solely to protect our<br />
wildlife <strong>an</strong>d wilderness areas.<br />
As Minister <strong>of</strong> Fisheries, the most import<strong>an</strong>t<br />
department in government, <strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Rideout</strong> played<br />
a major part in the restructuring effort. He was<br />
:llso instrumental in obtaining a <strong>new</strong> Inshore<br />
Fisheries Agreement with the federal government.<br />
This rroven experience will be critical to<br />
'he future 0 our province.<br />
<strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Rideout</strong> knows Newfoundl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Labrador.<br />
He grew up in Fleur de Lys in a family <strong>of</strong> 13, <strong>an</strong>d<br />
went to school in Baie Verte. He has worked the<br />
mines, the forests <strong>an</strong>d the fishery. Before entering<br />
politics, he taught high school. For 13 years<br />
he has been MHA For Baie Verte-White Bay. He<br />
joined cabinet in 1984 as Minister <strong>of</strong> Culture,<br />
Recreation <strong>an</strong>d Youth, <strong>an</strong>d later served as<br />
Minister <strong>of</strong> Fisheries.<br />
<strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Rideout</strong> is first <strong>an</strong>d foremost a family m<strong>an</strong>.<br />
He is well aware <strong>of</strong> the concerns <strong>of</strong> families<br />
today, <strong>an</strong>d has the underst<strong>an</strong>ding to be able to<br />
address these concerns. He <strong>an</strong>d his wife Jacinta<br />
<strong>an</strong>d their four children are all actively involved in<br />
this election.<br />

Education is <strong>an</strong> investment. A <strong>Rideout</strong> Government<br />
would undertake a program to introduce<br />
computers to all classrooms in the province.<br />
In heolth care, greot emphasis will be put on<br />
prevention, including promotion <strong>of</strong> healthier life<strong>style</strong>s,<br />
illness prevention <strong>an</strong>d elimination <strong>of</strong> health<br />
Ilazards.<br />
A <strong>Rideout</strong> Government will work to improve<br />
programs <strong>an</strong>d services. A Premier's Task Force<br />
on child sexual assaults <strong>an</strong>d family violence will<br />
be established.<br />

In leading Newfoundl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Labrador into the<br />
90' s, a <strong>Rideout</strong> Government will involve m<strong>an</strong>y<br />
special interest groups. Seniors have experience<br />
<strong>an</strong>d much c<strong>an</strong> be learned from them. Tllere is a<br />
need to be particularly sensitive to women's issues,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d in<br />
encouraging more<br />
women in public<br />
positions. Our youth<br />
need to be<br />
encouraged<br />
to stay in school.<br />
The <strong>Rideout</strong><br />
Government<br />
will be committed to<br />
educating ou'r youth<br />
<strong>an</strong>d keeping<br />
them home.<br />
A <strong>Rideout</strong> Government will build on natural<br />
resources, by co-operation with our partners.<br />
But we will never trade ownership <strong>of</strong> our<br />
resour~es for short term gain.<br />
The fishery is <strong>of</strong> fundamental import<strong>an</strong>ce to the<br />
Newfoundl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Labrador economy. As a<br />
former fisheries minister, <strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Rideout</strong> knows the<br />
import<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> a strong fishery to everyone in<br />
Newfoundl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Labrador. The <strong>Rideout</strong><br />
government will look to protect<br />
the fishery, by reducing overfishing, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>Tom</strong><br />
<strong>Rideout</strong> has called for <strong>an</strong> International Conference<br />
on Overfishing. In addition, the seal<br />
'population must be reduced as cod stocks<br />
c<strong>an</strong>not sustain continued growth <strong>of</strong> seal herds.
