c<strong>on</strong>tributes to a health-promoting nutritious diet,<br />

and is the first solid food/fruit fed to babies in<br />

Ind<strong>on</strong>esia. <strong>Banana</strong>s are cultivated over extensive<br />

areas in the country (about 2400 km 2 ), providing<br />

milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> job opportunities and c<strong>on</strong>tributing<br />

53 % <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all fruit exports (about 23 milli<strong>on</strong> UsD)<br />

from the country (nasir et al. 2005; nasir 2010).<br />

Pests and diseases are major c<strong>on</strong>straints<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>banana</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> in Ind<strong>on</strong>esia. At least<br />

four pests and diseases seriously affect <strong>banana</strong><br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong>s in the country, namely Bacterial<br />

Wilt, Fusarium Wilt and sigatoka Leaf spot.<br />

In West sumatra (in solok, Tanah Datar, Agam,<br />

Limapuluh Kota, Pasaman and Pariaman<br />

regencies) a high incidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sigatoka Leaf spot<br />

has been reported, as well as Fusarium diseases<br />

(except in Pariaman, where sigatoka was <strong>on</strong>ly at<br />

moderate levels) (Damarjati 2000). sigatoka Leaf<br />

spot is a black leaf-streak disease caused by the<br />

ascomycetous fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis<br />

Morelet and the weevil borer Cosmopolites<br />

sordidus (Germar), a native <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Malaysia and<br />

Ind<strong>on</strong>esia (Mourich<strong>on</strong> et al. 1997). Currently in<br />

West sumatra, <strong>banana</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong>s are threatened<br />

seriously by <strong>Banana</strong> Bunchy-top Virus (BBTV),<br />

together <strong>with</strong> wilt pathogens such as Fusarium<br />

(nasir et al. 1999) and the <strong>Banana</strong> Blood-disease<br />

bacterium (nasir 2010).<br />

<strong>Banana</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>s infected <strong>with</strong> BBTV<br />

show a signific<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g> reducti<strong>on</strong> in petiole length<br />

and spacing, canopy spread and height, leaf area,<br />

pseudostem diameter and chlorophyll c<strong>on</strong>tent<br />

(Hooks et al. 2008). suckers infected by BBTV<br />

are usually severely stunted, <strong>with</strong> leaves that do<br />

not expand normally and remain at the top <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the pseudostem. Infected <strong>banana</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>s usually<br />

will not fruit or will have abnormal fruit <strong>with</strong><br />

irregular “morse-code” streaking (nels<strong>on</strong> 2004)<br />

(Fig. 2b). BBTV is transmitted vegetatively,<br />

through tissue culture and by the aphid vector<br />

Pental<strong>on</strong>ia nigr<strong>on</strong>ervosa Coquerel (<strong>Banana</strong><br />

Aphid). no mechanical transmissi<strong>on</strong> has been<br />

reported (Diekmann & Putter 1996). Pental<strong>on</strong>ia<br />

nigr<strong>on</strong>ervosa is found whenever <strong>banana</strong> is grown<br />

and has become a signific<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g> pest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>banana</strong> due<br />

to its ability to transmit BBTV (Ploetz et al. 2003;<br />

nels<strong>on</strong> et al. 2006; Hooks et al. 2009). <strong>Banana</strong><br />

Aphid populati<strong>on</strong>s are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten tended by <str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>species</str<strong>on</strong>g> (nels<strong>on</strong> et al. 2006) since they produce<br />

large qu<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>ities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>on</strong>eydew. Informati<strong>on</strong> about<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>species</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>banana</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>s in Ind<strong>on</strong>esia is still<br />

sc<str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>y, especially that about <str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>banana</strong>s<br />

infected by BBTV. This work aimed to study the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>compositi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>ant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>species</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>banana</strong> <strong>with</strong> BBTV<br />

symptoms and their associati<strong>on</strong> <strong>with</strong> aphids, as<br />

there is no such informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> it in West sumatra<br />

to date.<br />
