dating from 1639; <strong>and</strong> an illuminated letter from Sultana Taj al-‘Alam, dated 12<br />

October 1661, congratulating Charles II on his accession to the English throne,<br />

<strong>and</strong> reaffi rming the cordial ties between Aceh <strong>and</strong> the English dating back to<br />

the time <strong>of</strong> Isk<strong>and</strong>ar Muda. Gallop’s work on explicating both the physical<br />

features <strong>of</strong> these documents <strong>and</strong> their political contexts helps us to underst<strong>and</strong><br />

some <strong>of</strong> the more nuanced aspects <strong>of</strong> Aceh’s diplomatic relationships with<br />

European powers in the early modern period.<br />

<strong>The</strong> late sixteenth through seventeenth century is one <strong>of</strong> the best-documented<br />

periods <strong>of</strong> <strong>Acehnese</strong> history, <strong>and</strong> has <strong>of</strong>ten been described as the<br />

‘golden age’ <strong>of</strong> the sultanate. Its most famous leader, Isk<strong>and</strong>ar Muda (r. 1607-<br />

1636), launched campaigns for the Islamization <strong>of</strong> the neighbouring Gayo<br />

<strong>and</strong> Minangkabau regions <strong>of</strong> Sumatra, <strong>and</strong> staged elaborate observances<br />

<strong>of</strong> Friday prayers <strong>and</strong> other Islamic religious ceremonies. He also appears<br />

to have adopted various symbols <strong>and</strong> institutions from the contemporary
