The Show Will Go On!
many of you know, the 2009 Pepper Show was in
Asjeopardy unless some key positions could be filled.
In October an urgent appeal was launched to fill these
roles including an event chairman, show director, marketing
director and show producer.
We have been delighted with the response to the appeal
and enough of the major roles have now been resolved for
us to commit to another Pepper Show for 2009!
We are thrilled to welcome some new people to the Pepper
fold, specifically Chris and Christina Organ as joint Event
Chairpersons with Kerie Ivory and Emily Organ as joint Show
Producers. A more familiar name to you all is Dennis Fairey,
a long standing Pepper trustee and recently appointed
Pepper patron, who will be heading up the Marketing team.
Pepper Youth musicians
performed at Tring Festival
of Light
After their success in December 2007, young performers from
Pepper Youth were invited again to perform on stage at the 2008
Tring Christmas Festival of Light.
Tom Halden, Bevan Morley, Andrew Douthwaite, Emma &
Hollie Clark, Jamie Donaldson and friends – plus other members
of Tom and Bev’s band ‘Tramp Etiquette’ – performed and
entertained the Christmas revellers as part of the popular and
well supported Festival.
We were delighted that their experience as part of the Pepper
Youth cast was so enjoyable that these youngsters wanted to do
their own thing to ‘spread the Pepper word’, in the classic Pepper
style – music! Our warmest congratulations go to Tom, Bev, Andy,
Emma, Hollie and friends for being invited to perform again and
our thanks for their continued support of the charity, which also
managed to raise £282.71 during the evening as a result of a
bucket collection.
The Show Will Go On
Jonathan Tweed,
Chairman,
The Pepper Foundation.
2
This news is hot off the press and
these key roles have only recently been
confirmed. We are very excited that
around 30 new people came forward
as a result of the plea, and they
have all been contacted about their
specific involvement.
Pepper Chairman, Jonathan Tweed,
said: “The Pepper Show has been hugely
successful for such a long time, and
it would have been incredibly sad for
The Pepper Foundation to have lost the
momentum and exposure that our flagship event has generated
over the last 20 years, so we are particularly delighted that
our appeal has unearthed some new experienced and energetic
talent to build another successful show”.
Jonathan continued: “However, we would still love to hear
from anyone who may be able to help either now or in the
future, particularly those with artistic and creative experience
around shows. We have learned our lesson and want to build
a succession plan for the key roles so this never happens again.
We can be contacted on the Pepper phone line –
0845 675 5566 or by email info@pepper.org.uk”.
On behalf of the Pepper Children’s
Nurses, we would like to thank the Asda
store in Hemel Hempstead for donating
Christmas gifts to some of the children
and families our nurses support.
We were delighted when Asda offered
such a generous Christmas gesture,
so thank you from everyone at Pepper
MARDI GRAS
BALL
Pepper’s Mardi Gras Ball, which was
originally scheduled to take place at
Pendley Manor Hotel in November 2008,
was postponed last autumn. Pepper
Events Limited are looking forward to
rescheduling the Ball at some point in the
future as it is one of the popular highlights
on the Pepper calendar. Watch this space
for the latest information on the Ball and
check our website www.pepper.org.uk
all our other future fundraising events.
Friends of Pepper
We’d love you to be our Friend!
is the time of year when our Friends of Pepper
Nowrenewals are being organised. If you are an existing
Friend, you should have received your renewal letter by now
and we very much hope that you will continue to be a Friend –
or FOP – as we fondly refer to you as!
Donations made by Friends of Pepper (FOP’s) make a massive
difference to our fundraising and we try to offer you something
back too.
All FOP’s get the opportunity to book tickets for Pepper Events
in advance of the general ticket release for events, such as the
summer show, ball, opera, quiz etc. and of course, you receive
our fabulous newsletter ‘Pepper News’ three times a year.
We have Friends of Pepper information on our website
(www.pepper.org.uk), with forms available to download,
or there should be a form enclosed in this mailing.
If you are not currently a Friend, but would like to become one
in 2009, please complete and return the form to Karen Buchanan
at the address shown on the form.
It helps us keep our administration costs down if you consider
making FOP donations via banker’s order. You can choose how
you do this either monthly, quarterly or annually. The minimum
FOP donation of £12 per year is equal to only £1 a month to you,
but it does make a vital difference to us.
Pepper can help YOU!
If you or your friends, family or places of work/study are considering raising funds
for a charity, then please do remember Pepper. We are always thrilled with the
support we get from the local community and can offer you ways of supporting
you with your fundraising.
We can offer you event advice, or we can help you set up personalised on-line
donation information via JustGiving, design & print posters, flyers and personalised
sponsorship forms to create more impact. We can help you publicise your event
information too via our media network.
We are always delighted to hear of the different ways in which people get
together to help raise funds to support the Pepper Children’s Nurses and of course,
we love publishing photos and stories on our website and in Pepper News.
On behalf of everyone at Pepper, we’d like to thank you all for the support
you’ve given The Pepper Foundation during 2008 and we look forward to 2009
with renewed confidence despite the current economic downturn. Let us not forget
that the health and welfare of a sick child is not governed by economic recession –
it can and does happen anytime.
Patron’s Charity Auction
Long standing Pepper patron, Marc Mendoza, recently held another very successful
fundraising auction on behalf of The Pepper Foundation. The event, featuring Jimmy
Carr and Sonya O’Leary, our Pepper Children’s Nursing Team Leader, raised even
more money than the last auction and has made another strategic contribution to
the funding of the charity.
It is extremely important to develop
good working relationships with the
parents and carers of the children.
Pepper Nurses
Nursing update
2008 was a very busy year for the Pepper Nursing
Team. We are actively receiving regular referrals and
are currently following up two of those in addition
to caring for 34 children and their families.
We have one or two children who have continued
to need extra support at home over the course of
the year, mainly due to their deteriorating conditions,
which takes up considerable nursing hours. As a
consequence some of our families were not offered
as many short breaks as we would normally have
offered during the school holidays.
Our two ‘bank’ nurses were an essential asset to
the team during recent months enabling us to meet
more requests for care from families. We do try to
make clear the limitations of the service right from
when we are introduced to a child and family,
explaining that children who are unwell are given
priority for care. This never seems to cause a problem
as for many of them they don’t know what each
coming day holds for them and when they are going
to be more in need of our input.
A child we were involved with for over six years sadly
passed away over the summer. The Pepper Children’s
Team and the Family Support Team worked closely
together to give vast amounts of time caring for the
child and family to meet their needs as best we could.
Over the period of our involvement and across both
teams we supported the parents, siblings and
numerous significant others in addition to the nursing
care that was given.
This is often fairly typical of the work we undertake
with our families, which can last for anything from
a few weeks to many years. Each individual within
the family is considered in their own right and we
endeavour to give the right support at the right time
as we recognise their needs and work with them to
help identify how best we can assist. It is extremely
important to develop good working relationships with
the parents and carers of the children, not only to be
guided by their wishes for the care of their child but
also to try to gain an understanding of the family
dynamics and how they cope with such difficult times.
Pepper @ The Gatsby IV
Pembroke and his excellent team at The Gatsby Bar
Nickand Restaurant in Berkhamsted pulled out all the
stops for another fundraising evening in aid of Pepper on
18th November. Nick and his team provided the usual seamless
and professional service we are now familiar with at The Gatsby.
Sixty guests enjoyed a superb 3-course meal, followed by coffee,
which was served by a very glamorous front of house team, who
had all dressed up in evening attire to give the event a special
ambience. Our special thanks are due to the wonderful Lourette,
who masterminded and planned the whole event.
Sonya O’Leary, Team Leader of the Pepper Nursing Team,
delivered a brief presentation to all assembled guests about
Pepper and its function within the local community, as most
of them were new to the charity. All those present were clearly
touched by her words.
Our heartfelt thanks are due to the many patrons who
donated items for the luxury prize draw – a case of Laurent Perrier
champagne from The Gatsby, dinner for four at The Gatsby,
cinema tickets for two from The Rex Cinema and a photographic
session with Scarlet Diva Portrait Studios – amazing generosity.
£15 from each ticket sold was donated to Pepper, which
totalled an impressive donation of £850 for the evening.
This is the fourth special evening organised by The Gatsby for
Pepper achieving a total amount
to date in excess of £5000 –
a staggering amount and enough
to support the specialist nursing
care needed for a child to be
nursed at home for a year –
which is wonderful. Thank you
Nick, Lourette and everyone at
The Gatsby for your continued
support and gifting.
Barclays Bank
sponsored canal walk
More than 30 Barclays Bank employees from 12 branches across the
Chilterns Region recently participated in a sponsored canal walk,
organised by their Chilterns Area Manager Richard Doran. The team
raised £1200 for Pepper in sponsorship, which was doubled as a
result of the Barclays ‘pound for pound’ matched giving scheme.
Sadly the weather on the day was described as ‘somewhat wet’
as the group set off from Cow Roast Pub & Restaurant on the A4031
between Berkhamsted and Tring. All entrants enjoyed themselves
nevertheless but
the hot food on
the barbeque
generously provided
free of charge by
Magoos was a most
welcome sight.
NATO ladies’ lunch
Pepper Chairman Jonathan Tweed was recently invited to attend a
themed lunch hosted by the wives of the international servicemen
who work at NATO headquarters in Northwood, Middlesex.
The October theme was hosted by the wives of German
servicemen who chose Pepper as their beneficiary from all the
proceeds raised from the raffle which this year consisted of some
very special prizes.
Jonathan spoke to an audience of around 50 wives, telling
them all about The Pepper Foundation and the work we do for
children with life-limiting illnesses which helped raise £140 for the
charity through the raffle, in addition to £40 from the sale of
Pepper Piglets.
Everyone appreciated the genuine German food prepared by
Barbara Meyer and her team of wives, which was complemented
by themed place mats and authentic table settings.
This is the second event to be hosted by NATO for Pepper for
which the Trustees and the nursing team express their sincere
thanks and gratitude to all those who have generously made
a contribution towards the work we do for sick children.
Our special thanks are also extended to Barbara Meyer for
all the special work she volunteered on our behalf.
Ulrike Gauger (left), one of the German wives, together with
Jonathan Tweed and even organiser Barbara Meyer (right).
Jazz at the Taj Mahal
Around 40 Pepper supporters enjoyed an
evening of jazz and curry at the Taj Mahal in
Berkhamsted in September 2008 – and what
an evening it turned out to be!
Guests sampled superb Indian cuisine
while listening to the music of Ian Harrison
and Sparky’s All Stars. Even better, after a
few numbers Ian was joined by Tina May,
regarded by many in the know as the UK’s
Number 1 female jazz singer. The evening was a real treat
for those present: great food, intimate surroundings and
‘Premier League’ jazz which would have graced any top venue.
In addition to a donation of £230 from Khalique at the Taj
Mahal, a raffle held during the evening raised a further £170.
Our thanks to Khalique for hosting the evening, and to Ian
for masterminding the music – and a big thank you to Tina
for her wonderful performance.
Khalique has offered to host more evenings for Pepper,
so if you like jazz and Indian food, watch this space.
Dr Malatesta explaining his plan to Don Pasquale in Act 1,
featuring James McOran-Campbell as Dr Malatesta (standing)
and Deryck Hamon as Don Pasquale (sitting).
Pepper at the Opera
‘Don Pasquale’
by Donizetti
celebrated Garden Opera Company, who have
Theentertained Pepper opera supporters for many years,
will perform Don Pasquale by Donizetti at the Centenary Theatre,
Berkhamsted Collegiate on Saturday 21st February 2009.
This masterpiece by Donizetti is a comical caper about marriage,
deception and intrigue. Pasquale is angry and jealous that his
nephew Ernesto is planning to marry and threatens to disinherit
him. In Don Pasquale’s own quest for marriage, he asks his friend
Dr Malatesta to find him a wife.
Malatesta then presents his sister Sofronia, a convent girl, to
Pasquale who is immediately smitten and they marry at once.
As soon as the marriage contract is signed, Sofronia, who is
actually Ernesto’s lover Norina, begins to fritter away Pasquale’s
wealth and drives him to the verge of suicide. Luckily the plot
is unravelled and Pasquale frees himself from the clutches of
marriage and allows Ernesto to wed Norina.
The opera, sung in English, sparkles with wit and the most
enchanting music, is deliciously funny and compassionate
and well suited to the Garden Opera’s company of talented
young professionals.
It is a rare opportunity to enjoy glorious Opera of this quality
in Berkhamsted therefore when tickets go on sale to the general
public on Saturday 3rd January, we would expect them to be
taken up very quickly.
For regular attendees of the Pepper Opera performances,
a special mailing has already been sent out offering advanced
ticket sales, which you need to act upon very quickly before they
go on general sale.
Ticket prices are £25 per adult and £12.50 for under 16’s,
the perfect way to introduce our younger generation to the
delights of opera as an art form.
As in previous years there will be a variety of suitably named
champagne cocktails available from 6pm before the performance
starts at 7pm and during the interval. For those who enjoy dressing
for the occasion, black tie will not look out of place.
The Berkhamsted Half
Marathon & Five Mile
Fun Run
The Berkhamsted Half Marathon taking place on Sunday
March 1st 2009, is an ideally timed event for runners coming back
to competitive running after winter training (or hibernation!) and
is frequently used as a serious ‘marker’ for those training for the
full marathon distances of the London Marathon and elsewhere.
See Runners World magazine details and reviews on the event.
The five-mile fun run attracts many entrants and, like the half
marathon, tracks through very attractive Ashridge countryside
using a different course.
This annual event, organised by both Berkhamsted Rotary Clubs,
has firmly established this popular event in the sporting calendar
offering competitors a challenging and picturesque course. The aim
of the organisers is to create a successful and challenging halfmarathon
event together with an interesting fun run that captures
the imagination from up and coming athletes to school children
who are keen simply to support children who are less fortunate than
themselves by putting the word FUN into Fundraising. Clearly their
ethos has worked as the event continually attracts record numbers.
Over the years this event has raised well over £60,000 for various
charities who have benefited from sponsorship by individuals not
to mention substantial sums donated to The Pepper Foundation.
By taking part in the 2009 event, you will be helping raise muchneeded
funds for The Pepper Foundation and the care it provides
for terminally sick children.
Event information and entry forms can be downloaded from
the event website, www.berkhamstedhalfmarathon.co.uk.
If you are interested in supporting the event other than entering
as a competitor by perhaps offering your services as a race marshal,
please email Karen Buchanan at Pepper at
A hair-raising
event for Pepper
The Elanel Hair and Beauty Salon in Aylesbury, Bucks, recently held a
special fundraising day in support of The Pepper Foundation, which
raised an impressive £385 taken between the hours of 10am – 2pm.
One member of staff, Joanne, was sponsored to have her hair
coloured bright pink while the salon
reduced the cost of all customer cuts to
£5 including coloured hair extensions
for children. Clients and staff were not
daunted by the atrocious weather and
did a magnificent job by raising so much
money in such a short period of time.
Our thanks are extended to Lisa and
her team for raising funds for such a
worthwhile cause.
Mayor of Chesham
supports Pepper
Councillor Alison Pirouet, the present Mayor
of Chesham, has chosen Pepper as her charity
of the year during her time in office.
Jonathan Tweed, Moira Massingale, Linda &
Tony Horsfall were delighted to accept Alison’s invitation to
represent Pepper at one of her recent official Mayoral events
at the Elgiva Theatre in Chesham on 17th November where
the Salvation Army staged a Christmas concert, playing to
a full house.
Jonathan Tweed, Chairman of The Pepper Foundation
was invited to speak to the audience about the work of the
Pepper Children’s Nurses and he and the other Trustees
circulated in the foyer after the concert to chat to guests and
help raise further awareness of the charity to a predominately
Chesham audience.
Mac Mackay’s 60th
birthday barn dance
Long time Pepper supporter Mac Mackay and his partner
Jan High decided to celebrate Mac’s 60th birthday recently
with a difference! The avid music fans decided to host a birthday
Barn Dance by way of celebration with donations, to Pepper
to be given in lieu of birthday presents.
Kathy Soulsby and her trusty team ran a ‘Pepper’ bar at
the event and it is an understatement to say that all had a
good time!
Thank you to Mac (and Jan) for such a generous gesture –
the evening raised £1187.35 which is enough to provide a
week’s funding to support a Pepper Children’s Nurse.
Pepper Quiz night
This longstanding event in the Pepper fundraising calendar proved
so popular last year that the organisers had to turn away five tables
of hopeful contestants because the maximum 25 tables of eight
allocations would have been exceeded.
To ensure you are successful in securing your team table for the
Pepper Quiz night held in the Great Hall at Ashlyns School,
Berkhamsted on Saturday 7th March 2009, we strongly recommend
you book now without further delay to avoid disappointment.
The current holders of the Walrus Trophy – ‘Dr Chop & Mr Suey’,
will be back to defend their honour, so why don’t you come and
try to wrestle away this magnificent prize.
To apply for an entry form whether booking as an individual to
join a table or teams of eight people to form their own tables, you
can either download a form from the home page on the website –
www.pepper.org.uk – or call Mitzi on 01296 632266 or simply
fill in the form inserted in this issue of Pepper News.
Santa supports Pepper
through his Grotto
courtesy of
Bucks Free Press
Bucks Free Press has staged a Christmas Grotto
Thefor several years using a temporary trailer during the
High Wycombe Christmas light switch-on ceremony but 2008
saw them scale up the event to provide Santa with his very
own grotto in the new Eden Centre shopping complex.
As a result of an initial approach by one of Pepper’s Bank
Nurses – Debbie Kelly, and follow up discussions with Jonathan
Tweed and Liz Clarke, the Bucks Free Press agreed to support
Pepper through donations made by children visiting Santa in
his grotto. This is the first time Bucks Free Press have worked
with a charity therefore we are particularly honoured that they
should have selected Pepper as their first beneficiary.
The grotto was open for six Saturdays between 15th
November & 20th December between 10am and 3pm.
For the first four Saturdays, children were photographed for
inclusion in a Bucks Free Press supplement, which was published
on 12th December, and included the Pepper logo and details
about the charity.
It cost £2 to visit Santa – 50p to cover a copy of Bucks Free
Press, 50p toward the photographer’s costs and £1 to Pepper.
The part of Santa (one of the real Santa’s stand-in’s
during his very busy time), was Councillor Doug Anson MBE
a District and County Councillor and former Mayor of Marlow
who supported the Make a Wish Foundation whilst Mayor
and is well known locally as a philanthropist.
Unfortunately we are not able to announce how much
money was raised due to print deadlines governing the
production of Pepper News over Christmas, but needless to say
we will acknowledge the efforts made by the Bucks Free Press,
Cllr Doug Anson MBE and the Eden Centre not forgetting of
course – Santa!
Pepper would like to thank all those involved in spreading
the ‘Pepper word’ into the Wycombe & Marlow areas
of Buckinghamshire.
New litter of Pepper Piglets looking for a home
There are many types of pigs. Some pigs, like warthogs and boars,
are wild pigs. Domestic pig breeds include Hampshire, Gloucester
and Large Whites. Some pigs, like Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, are
kept as pets.
The Pepper piglet is particularly fond of spending time with people,
especially children and he loves music, fun, laughter and the
opportunity to sing his favourite Sgt. Pepper song
‘Lucy in the Sty with Diamonds!’
The piglets are available
to a good home for £7.99.
Pepper pot amnesty!
We are trying to establish an up-to-date record
of Pepper supporters who may have a Pepper
pot in either their home or place of work.
In the days before computerised database
records were in existence, we know that many
Pepper supporters may have been given a
Pepper pot collection box without a record
having been kept of this. We are now keen
to make our Pepper pot home and ‘shop’ box
system more streamlined, therefore we need
your help in establishing who has what.
If you have a Pepper pot at home or at work,
or you know someone who has, we would
be very grateful if you could contact Karen
Buchanan the Pepper Administrator, to let
her know so she can update our records.
You can either email Karen direct on
karenbuchanan@btinternet.com, or call her
on the Pepper line – 0845 675 5566.
