PLOP RETURNS AS THE <strong>#1</strong> CUSTOM FIT PUTTER IN GOLF<br />

“We look forward to return<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> 2011 PGA Merchandise <strong>Show</strong> <strong>as</strong> an exhibitor for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time s<strong>in</strong>ce I sold PLOP Golf Company <strong>in</strong> late 1996”, said Jake Schmidt, Founder and President<br />

of PLOP Golf Company.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1990’s, PLOP established itself <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>#1</strong> Custom Fit Putter <strong>in</strong> Golf with <strong>the</strong><br />

placement of its <strong>in</strong>novative “Red Tower” computerized <strong>fit</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t of purch<strong>as</strong>e displays <strong>in</strong> over<br />

2000 <strong>golf</strong> shops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. The testimonials <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

“The computerized <strong>fit</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g display is so accurate and you get your <strong>custom</strong> <strong>fit</strong> <strong>putter</strong> immediately,<br />

just like a pair of shoes”…… Chris Smith, Buyer for Golf Warehouse, Morrow, GA.<br />

“It’s a great <strong>fit</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g system! It’s <strong>the</strong> first <strong>putter</strong> that <strong>fit</strong>s itself to you ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r way<br />

around. We can’t keep enough <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shop”…… Forrest Fezler, Head Pro, Kiln Creek Country<br />

Club, Newport, VA.<br />

“Th<strong>in</strong>k about it”, said designer, Jake Schmidt, “<strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> <strong>in</strong> every Tour Pro’s bag is <strong>custom</strong><br />

<strong>fit</strong>ted. It’s <strong>the</strong> one club that is used on every hole so play<strong>in</strong>g with a <strong>putter</strong> that is perfectly <strong>fit</strong> to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir length, lie angle and sw<strong>in</strong>gweight is a necessary competitive advantage. It also ensures that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tour Pros get <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same putt<strong>in</strong>g position every time <strong>the</strong>y putt which helps with consistency<br />

and confidence. Every <strong>golf</strong>er, no matter what <strong>the</strong> handicap, needs and deserves <strong>the</strong> same<br />

advantages. It’s <strong>the</strong> e<strong>as</strong>iest way to make more putts and lower a <strong>golf</strong>er’s score”, concluded<br />

Schmidt.<br />

There’s a big difference between be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>#1</strong> Putter <strong>in</strong> Golf and <strong>the</strong> <strong>#1</strong> Custom Fit Putter <strong>in</strong><br />

Golf. Just <strong>as</strong>k any of <strong>the</strong> players on any of <strong>the</strong> PGA, European, and LPGA Tours. All of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

are <strong>custom</strong> <strong>fit</strong> for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual putt<strong>in</strong>g stances, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g length, lie angle and sw<strong>in</strong>gweight.<br />

PLOP spent <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t two years with 3 top electronic and mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eers re-design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>fit</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g device. With <strong>the</strong> improvements <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> new “Red Tower” PLOP<br />

“P<strong>fit</strong>” device, every <strong>golf</strong>er can determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir precise me<strong>as</strong>urements <strong>in</strong> a matter of seconds. “We<br />

<strong>fit</strong> every <strong>golf</strong>er for length, lie angle and sw<strong>in</strong>gweight, just like we do for <strong>the</strong> Tour pros”, advised<br />

Schmidt.<br />

“We pre-make all <strong>the</strong> different length, lie angle and sw<strong>in</strong>gweight comb<strong>in</strong>ations so a <strong>golf</strong>er’s<br />

correct size is available on <strong>the</strong> spot from <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong> shop”, just like shoes, said Schmidt. “It’s<br />

critical that <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong>er purch<strong>as</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir correct size for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual putt<strong>in</strong>g stance and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

don’t have to wait days or weeks to use it.”<br />

When you bend <strong>the</strong> hosel to change <strong>the</strong> lie angle, <strong>the</strong> face loft will be modified. Bend<strong>in</strong>g it to a<br />

flatter lie angle equates to add<strong>in</strong>g face loft, while bend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hosel to a more upright lie<br />

subtracts face loft. “I strongly advise aga<strong>in</strong>st bend<strong>in</strong>g hosels on <strong>putter</strong>s. There’s just too little<br />

marg<strong>in</strong> of error <strong>in</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g. The proper and precise manner to make hosels on <strong>putter</strong>s is to mill

different lie angles with<strong>in</strong> millimeter tolerances to with<strong>in</strong> two degrees of your desired or natural<br />

hand position so <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s flat on <strong>the</strong> ground at set-up”, stated Schmidt.<br />

“In addition to <strong>the</strong> proper <strong>fit</strong>, it’s also important that <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> have better physics designed to<br />

improve performance”, cont<strong>in</strong>ued Schmidt. Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2006, Jake began design<strong>in</strong>g a revolutionary<br />

<strong>golf</strong> club <strong>putter</strong> that “looks” like a traditional heel shafted heel toe weighted <strong>putter</strong> at setup, but<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporates a hosel that is center shafted. Unlike all heel shafted <strong>putter</strong>s where <strong>the</strong> hosel is<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong> heel and milled out of a s<strong>in</strong>gular block of metal, <strong>the</strong> new PLOP RSVP 2 center<br />

shafted offset hosel floats through a topl<strong>in</strong>e heel open<strong>in</strong>g untouched and connects to a vertical<br />

center post. An advantage of all heel shafted <strong>putter</strong>s is <strong>the</strong>re is an unobstructed view of <strong>the</strong> ball at<br />

setup and through <strong>the</strong> entire putt<strong>in</strong>g stroke. In 2008, Schmidt perfected <strong>the</strong> method of<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> RSVP 2 CSH 1 and permanently <strong>in</strong>sert<strong>in</strong>g a separately milled offset hosel <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> separately milled body. Asked why he named it <strong>the</strong> RSVP, Schmidt stated, “it’s my response<br />

to an answer”.<br />

The new CSH <strong>putter</strong> technology w<strong>as</strong> tested scientifically off <strong>the</strong> professional tours and by<br />

players on <strong>the</strong> PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and LPGA Tour. The results showed two major<br />

advantages over <strong>the</strong> hosel to heel connected <strong>putter</strong>s widely used on by Tour players and<br />

amateurs. The CSH technology significantly <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>es <strong>the</strong> amount of feel and feedback that a<br />

player receives at <strong>the</strong> moment of impact with <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong> ball, <strong>the</strong>reby <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong><strong>in</strong>g distance and<br />

control performance on long putts and keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong> ball on l<strong>in</strong>e for any distance putts. It also<br />

<strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>es <strong>the</strong> sweet spot and provides virtually no twist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong>er’s hands at <strong>the</strong> moment of<br />

impact, help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> putt to stay on its <strong>in</strong>tended l<strong>in</strong>e. This is a direct result of <strong>the</strong> CSH technology<br />

reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> variables of how much grip pressure <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong>er needs to make to counteract <strong>the</strong><br />

torque imparted at impact with a <strong>golf</strong> ball for different distances of putts.<br />

All traditional <strong>putter</strong>s, like an Anser style made by o<strong>the</strong>r manufacturers, have <strong>the</strong> hosel directly<br />

attached at <strong>the</strong> heel away from <strong>the</strong> center of impact on <strong>the</strong> face. The science of physics tells us<br />

that <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r away you move <strong>the</strong> hosel and/or shaft connection from <strong>the</strong> center of <strong>the</strong> face and<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t of impact, <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> face will open at impact and <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong> shaft and grip will<br />

rotate or twist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong>er’s hands, depend<strong>in</strong>g upon how hard <strong>the</strong> putt is hit. CSH technology<br />

virtually elim<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>the</strong>se significant disadvantages and performs more like <strong>the</strong> PLOP Orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

center shafted blade, <strong>the</strong> only <strong>putter</strong> made that can patently claim it possesses zero twist <strong>in</strong> a<br />

<strong>golf</strong>er’s hands when <strong>the</strong> <strong>golf</strong> ball is struck at <strong>the</strong> center of <strong>the</strong> face. It’s <strong>the</strong> Physical Laws Of<br />

Putt<strong>in</strong>g (PLOP). As Eli Callaway once told me, Schmidt reiterated, “you can’t argue with<br />

physics”. The new PLOP CSH technology conforms to <strong>the</strong> USGA rules of <strong>golf</strong>.<br />

Jake also redesigned <strong>the</strong> largest sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>custom</strong> <strong>fit</strong> <strong>putter</strong> of <strong>the</strong> 1990’s, his PLOP “Orig<strong>in</strong>al”<br />

center shafted br<strong>as</strong>s blade. No o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>putter</strong>s are center shafted precisely through <strong>the</strong> center of<br />

gravity from heel to toe and face to back. The metal surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> angle of <strong>the</strong> shaft enter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> center of gravity is evenly distributed. To achieve this 360 degrees perfect balance, <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong><br />

can only be made <strong>in</strong> one shape. This balance is totally neutral, <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> head does not<br />

attempt to open or close anytime dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g stoke and naturally tends to come back to<br />

square impact.<br />

Jake improved <strong>the</strong> PLOP Orig<strong>in</strong>al by <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g a full face alum<strong>in</strong>um <strong>in</strong>sert for softer feel and<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ation of any backsp<strong>in</strong> at impact. The PLOP “i” Orig<strong>in</strong>al gets its name from <strong>the</strong> full face

alum<strong>in</strong>um <strong>in</strong>sert and is made <strong>in</strong> three different <strong>putter</strong> head weights, correlated to different shaft<br />

lengths, for better balance and a smoo<strong>the</strong>r stroke. The PLOP Orig<strong>in</strong>al and <strong>the</strong> new PLOP “i”<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>al provide maximum feel and zero twist at impact, <strong>the</strong> only <strong>putter</strong>s that can make this<br />

claim.<br />

“We will also be <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new ICON 2 CSH 1 mallet at <strong>the</strong> 2011 show”, revealed<br />

Schmidt. The PGA Tour pros <strong>as</strong>ked for it and <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> market demanded it. Nearly 40% of all<br />

<strong>golf</strong>ers use some style of a mallet <strong>putter</strong> design. But none of <strong>the</strong>m have virtually no twist at<br />

impact until <strong>the</strong> new ICON 2 model <strong>in</strong>corporated PLOP’s patented CSH (Center Shafted Hosel)<br />

technology. The body design is traditional, but <strong>the</strong> performance is <strong>in</strong>novative over all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

mallets…. and every one we make is <strong>custom</strong> <strong>fit</strong>ted to a <strong>golf</strong>er’s <strong>in</strong>dividual putt<strong>in</strong>g stance, just<br />

like we make’em for <strong>the</strong> PGA Tour players, stated Schmidt.<br />

The ICON 2 is <strong>the</strong> first mallet <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g a separately milled hosel and a separately milled<br />

body. The ¾ offset hosel, which allows <strong>the</strong> <strong>putter</strong> to be face balanced, floats through a topl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

hole at <strong>the</strong> heel and is permanently attached <strong>in</strong>to a vertical <strong>putter</strong> post at <strong>the</strong> center of gravity.<br />

Each body and hosel are entirely precision milled out of 303 sta<strong>in</strong>less steel with a sat<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish. As<br />

standard with all PLOP <strong>putter</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> ICON 2 body is made <strong>in</strong> three different <strong>putter</strong> head weights<br />

correlated to shaft lengths to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> optimum sw<strong>in</strong>gweight for additional feel and a smoo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

putt<strong>in</strong>g stroke.<br />

Jake’s design studio, PutterWorks, is a unique enterprise conceived to nurture creative and<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g breakthroughs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of <strong>putter</strong> technology. PutterWorks, <strong>the</strong> design division of<br />

PLOP Golf Company, will stay at <strong>the</strong> front edge of technology.<br />

PLOP Golf Company w<strong>as</strong> founded by Jake Schmidt <strong>in</strong> September 1990 to design and produce<br />
