The
Science Week!
From the beginning of man’s history
on the planet earth the sky was the
limit but in the 1960s there was
change and I’m not just talking
about Martin Luther King and his
dream. So what happened; the Cold
War almost boiled over into nuclear
holocaust, England won their first
and only football world cup, JFK
was assassinated. Yes, but one event
superseded all; man landed on the
moon, not because it was easy but
because it was hard.
A giant leap for mankind:
At approximately 02:56 UTC on 21
July 1969. An estimated 500 million
people worldwide watched Neil
Armstrong take “one small step for
man and a giant leap for mankind.”
This single step changed the course
of MAN KIND and the way it looks at
space forever. For the next twenty
years every child aspired to be an
astronaut. In the future, in our own
life time perhaps many other
astonishing events will take place as
we are steaming ahead through
The Langley Academy played host to the Slough Indoor Rowing
compete at the championships held at Dorney Lake (an Olympic
venue). Langley Grammar, Beechwood, Slough and Eton, St
Joseph’s and Arbour Vale all competed against The Langley
Academy overall qualified to compete at the Berkshire Indoor
Rowing Championships! We would like to congratulate our Year
7/8 girls for qualifying at 1st place with 84 points. Also
congratulations to the Year 7/8 boys for also qualifying at 1st ROWING
place
with 94 points beating Langley Grammar (86 points). A special
thanks goes out to the Year 7/8 girls and boys who competed in
the Year 9/10 races. Good luck and congratulations for a truly
commendable achievement.
On 5 th March Year 8 girls, played a cricket match against Langley Grammar
and won 96 runs to 26 a truly commendable performance. Congratulations
Ladies! As cricket is one of our key foci for the Academy we encourage all
students to participate actively so if you think you are a true all-rounder join
them every Friday and Monday.
So far the boys have been unbeatable in 2012 and have reached the quarterfinal of
their cup. One of the Year 8 players, Frank Francis has been scouted for QPR and is
a real team player. We wish the boys good luck with their future games.
OUR REPRESENTATIVES AND
LEADERS
Q3: What advice would you give to the current Year 11 students?
Q1: Why did you apply for your positions?
A: We applied because we want to make a
difference in the Academy and we want to
represent the student voice.
Q2: How do you want to use your voice to make a
difference?
A: We will be talking to all students. We are setting
up a scheme whereby we will be visiting every
House Tutor group in the Academy each term and
will be asking whether they have any issues.
A: Many people do comment on how A levels are a lot harder than GCSEs. It is true, you must work ten times
harder. Hence, we all agree work harder and maintain a revision regime and this can easily be endorsed once
you come to the 6 th Form.
Q4: You have mentioned students can approach you if in need of guidance, however from a Year 7 student’s
point of view wouldn’t they be afraid to approach a 6 th Former?
A: Yes we do understand therefore we are open to receiving emails which could include any issues a student
might have. This can save a young student such as a Year 7 from being afraid to approach us. We are here to
help and are available via email always.
Q5: How do you all feel knowing that you will all be the centre of focus for the next year and a half whilst
representing the school at events and presenting speeches?
A: I think we would all agree that we feel proud and privileged to represent The Langley Academy. We might
feel nervous when presenting a speech, however we are a team which should help us overcome any problems
we might encounter.
Q6: What do you think of the new Principal Mr Bryant?
A: We have met the Principal and really do like his ideas of an open door policy, whereby people can easily
speak to him about any issues. We are all looking forward to working with him.
Q7: What one piece of advice would you offer to any student
within the Academy?
(Achempong Osei D.H.B)- Smile, Laugh and be happy!
(Rafid Ali H.B)-Talk to people about everything and
anything.
(Abbie Burden D.H.G)- Don’t be afraid to do what you want
to do, like applying for certain positions like Head Girl.
(Rachel Bernard H.G)- Enjoy school now.
We are all looking forward to seeing what these exceptional
role models will do for our Academy in the near future!
Don’t hesitate to contact them!
Students in Focus
+ Teacher
Archie
Archie was born in Zimbabwe and lived there for the first 4 years of
his life. This makes him extremely multi-cultural and an asset to the
Academy. After much deliberation we found out his favourite
teacher is Mr Stritch and this is reflective of his favourite subject,
English. However he revealed a soft spot for maths and the great
teacher, Mr Katsholo. Outside of school Archie is a huge music fan
and often finds new talent on the alternative hip hop scene.
Interestingly, in later life Archie hopes to learn how to become a
puppet master.
Miss Singo
Miss Singo is a science teacher who loves problem solving
and understanding how things work. From a young age she
wanted to either be a doctor or a mentor to the future
generations. One of her goals in the upcoming years is to
have a family and to be the best science teacher ever.
Outside of school Miss Singo leads a choir and helps host
and plan events such as poetry evenings. Furthermore she
plays basketball and tennis in her free time. Before working
at the Academy Miss Singo worked for Reading University
and at a show shop (which she didn’t enjoy)!
From Left to Right: Paras Sharma, Archie
Nhlangano and Miss Singo
Paras
Paras Sharma is a Year 8 student who is a member of
Darwin House and The Academy Council. Paras and
his peers recently chose their GCSE options with the
young Mr Sharma opting for Drama, History,
Geography and French. Paras is a very sporty
student with a great love for ice hockey and football,
which he does during enrichment along with
occasional rowing sessions. When he’s older Paras
wishes to be a Judge as he is interested in laws and
the justice system.
KONY 2012
Joseph Kony has been the leader of the L.R.A for over 30 years he has committed so many crimes that
he is the top man to be stopped; some of the crimes are murder, rape, extortion etc. As a child Kony
was very helpful but when it came down to fights he always resorted violence. In his early life he
started to join rebel groups but stuck to the worst of them all a guerrilla group called the L.R.A the
Lord’s resistance army. Over the years Kony has made children into slaves, prostitutes and soldiers
he targets children because he has said himself “they are easy to manipulate”. He has done this to
Uganda for many years and now because the US stepped in he has fled to the republic of Congo and
taken a few soldiers with him. Even though he has left Uganda there are many war lords still out
there wreaking havoc in Uganda and many soldiers will not put down the guns and go back to their
normal life as they have been killing children and adults for most of their life. He turns them into
child soldiers and makes them kill their own parents and deform children with a panga (Machete).
There are still many children affected by the actions of Kony. Up until today, the Ugandan
government have been trying to stop Kony, with the help of the US army. There are many charities
like invisible children and TRI working on helping. They are still trying to sort this out but many
people think this is a money making scheme. On the other hand people are trying to help stop him
and fund the charities. Although we live in the 21 st century and in a growing diverse international
community, it is sad that there are organizations such as the L.R.A who suppress people’s freedom of
movement and the right to live in a humanitarian world.
