Dear Parents and Friends of SGS,
As we are all well aware, we are preparing for an election. Can I encourage
you to consider the impact of the different parties’ policies on
non-government Schools? The Government has commenced a review of
funding in education which will not conclude till after the election. As an
independent School, especially a low fee school, we rely heavily on the
funding from government, especially the Federal Government. Please take
the time to review the information on the AIS NSW website in relation to the
significance of this funding and your vote or lobbying of our local member.
While the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and the current Minister for Education,
Simon Crean, have made some encouraging statements regarding the future
of funding for non-government schools, there are still no guarantees that the
current funding arrangements will be maintained beyond 2012, or that
independent schools will not see any reduction in funding under a future
funding model.
Election 2010 website
The AIS, at the request of the AIS Board's Funding Review Committee, has developed a website to provide
independent schools and school communities with information and resources to assist those who wish to engage
with their local Members of Parliament and election candidates. The information can assist independent schools and
their communities to seek commitments from politicians that the needs of their school will be considered properly
by their political party.
The Election 2010 website can be accessed at www.aisnsw.edu.au/election2010 or simply from the menu on the
home page of the AIS website at www.aisnsw.edu.au Election 2010 contains basic data, facts, myths, funding and
enrolment information on independent schools, along with relevant charts and graphs.
We also have brochures in the office that help to understand the funding debate and the Independent School sector.

It is a great pleasure to announce that Mr
Michael Holland has accepted the
Agriculture/Science teaching position and
will commence in week 4.
I have been receiving many phone calls
regarding concerns about the number of
students travelling on the Muswellbrook 1
bus. We are enforcing students travelling on
their correct bus to assist with even bus
numbers traveling to and from
Muswellbrook. We would greatly appreciate
your assistance by making sure your son or
daughter is always using the correct bus. If
you continue to have concerns please
contact the bus company and also the
Ministry of Transport. I would also be
pleased to hear from you.

Primary News (From Mrs Brice)
St Lukes Fete
On Saturday 31 July, the K/1 Krooners, Melodic Minors and Voiceworx have been invited to perform at the St Luke’s
Fete. We are aware that Saturdays are busy for many families, so understand that not all students will be able to
attend. The children are not required to be in school uniform.
The performance will be at approximately 11 am. Children will need to assemble in the play area at the rear of the
hall with Mrs Moore and Mr Mead at 10:45 am.

• Tuesday 3 August: K – 1 Athletics Fun Day (see details below)
• Tuesday 3 August: English Competition (Educational Assessment Australia)
This is for all students in Years 4 and 6 as well as other students from Years 3 and 5 who were
nominated by parents earlier in the year.
• Wednesday 4 August: Mrs Garrett will be speaking at Muswellbrook Pre School to parents of
pre-schoolers who are preparing their children for the commencement of school next year. This
meeting will commence at 6.30pm.
• Friday 30 July - National Tree Day: Students of Six Gold will be participating in a special tree planting
afternoon on Friday afternoon, sponsored by Muswellbrook Toyota.

K – 1 Athletics Fun Day
# Tuesday 3 August – at the Complex. Children are to arrive at School at the normal
Time, in the normal manner.
# Parents are very welcome. Bring / send morning tea. If parents are unable to attend,
teachers will walk students back to School for lunch and afternoon activities. Students
returning to School will need to bring lunch.
# The day will conclude just after 12.30 pm. Students are permitted to leave with
parents after the awarding of Participation Certificates.
# Timetable: 9.30 am – 10.30 am Arrival / assemble for class / age races
10.30 am – 10.45 am Morning Tea with parents
10.45 am – Noon Novelty / Athletic Events (in rotation)
Noon - 12.30 pm K – 1 Relays
12.30 pm Awarding of Participation certificates
SRC
The SRC is happy to announce that $558 was raised last Friday as a result of the Out of Uniform Day. This will be put
towards sponsoring an orphan in Kenya.
NSW State Age Netball Championships
We always enjoy hearing about special achievements made by students from our School. During the recent holidays,
the NSW State Age Netball Championships were held in the Hunter, with 297 teams participating from all over NSW.
Congratulations to Taylor Bramble who was part of the ‘Muswellbrook 12’s’. They were named Runners Up in the
NSW Netball 12’s Division Three. Congratulations also to Issy Watts who was in the ‘Scone 12’s’. Her team came fifth
in the same division.

Congratulations to Jonah Edlington (Year 2 Blue), Paris Ciolac (Year 2 Gold), Matthew Smart (Year 3 Gold), Sam Barry
(Kindergarten Blue), Tyler Kelly (Year 1 Gold), Hugo Morgan (Year 3 Gold), Brendan Flemming (Kindergarten Red) and
Max O’Meara (Year 1 Blue), who are all celebrating birthdays this week.

NSW Parents Council
Michael Garland has resigned from the NSW Parents Council. He has represented us on behalf of the P & F. The
Parents Council advocates on behalf of Independent School Education. If anyone is interested in this position please
come in and speak to Mr Smart or come and show your interest at a P & F meeting. The next meeting is Tuesday 10
August at 6.00pm in the Library.
SRC Out of Uniform Day
Last week the SRC held an out of uniform day to raise $1000 to sponsor a Kenya child. With the money from the out
of uniform day and a donation from Sarah Sylvester’s busking our target was reached. We are now in contact with the
Bishop to allocate us a child for this sponsorship and we will enclose further details in the newsletter when this occurs.
Equestrian News
Tuesday Horse Sports will commence in Week 6, 26 August and continue until the end of term. I hope to be able to
offer a choice of show jumping or polo crosse to both secondary and primary students. An equestrian newsletter will
be sent to parents shortly.
Merriwa Horse Sports – Monday - 16 August. Entry form and information are on the Merriwa Central School Website.
If you wish to attend this event please send your completed entry forms into school as soon as possible. Any costs will
be added to your sundries account.

Scholarships 2011
A reminder that the following Scholarships are closing on Monday 16 August . If you are interested in applying for
the Music Scholarship or know of students outside the school who may wish to apply and / or for either the General
Excellence or the Bishop Roger Herft Scholarships, please let them know. Criteria information can be found on the
School Website or by contacting the Registrar, Mrs Adrienne Casey, at the School.
General Excellence Scholarship 2011
Students attending Scone Grammar School or any other independent school are not eligible to apply;
Music Scholarship 2011 Open to all students;
Bishop Roger Herft Scholarship Current Scone Grammar School students are not eligible to apply.

Term 3 - Kids Club is back!!!
Now open to children in years K-6. 5 Wednesday afternoons of fun - games, craft, activities, food and finding out
more about Jesus. When is it? 3.30pm – 5pm on Wednesday 11th, 18th, 25th August, 1st, 8th September 2010
Where is it? St Luke’s Hall, Scone How do I join? There are limited places for children in years K – 2. Children in
these years must be registered in advance by phone. Children in years 3 - 6, come on the day with the permission

Scone Netball Representative Team Tryouts If you are interested in playing

40 Hour Famine - Merriwa. Rev’d Mandy is hoping a group of young people will get together and join
her in supporting the 40 Hour Famine on 27-29 August, 2010. This year Merriwa locals can choose to give up take away
food, television, chocolate, DVDs, or soft drinks in support of the
cause. A group is being formed to plan an event for Friday 27
