A Message from the President
January marks the beginning of our yearlong 30th
Anniversary Celebration. We’ve come a long way
since the agency made its first match in 1978. In the
agency’s first decade, 108 matches were made, and
at the printing of this newsletter over 2,500 kids
have been served. It all began with a small group of

CarMax recently awarded the agency a grant of $3,000 to help
support the High School Bigs program. Rick Day, Location General
Manager of CarMax, presented the check to the agency's
representative, Erin Frick, and to Little Brother Christian on

University students giving back
to the community
Big Brothers Big Sisters has teamed up with the Texas A & M
International University (TAMIU) baseball team to serve as
community mentors. Thirty-Six TAMIU volunteers will be
matched with Little Brothers and Sisters from Trautmann Middle
School. After news of the program got around campus, other
athletic departments joined the fun and became mentors for
other Laredo children.

Magic While You Wait
A Program for Ready To Be Matched Littles
October
In October, ready-to-be-matched Littles and volunteers from
the National Hispanic Professional Organization, Hispanic Women’s
Network of Texas and the Association of Legal Administrators
joined together to have a fun day bowling at Bandera Bowl.
The group had a fantastic time bowling spares and strikes and
getting to know each other. The agency thanks all the
volunteers who helped coordinate such a large event.
November
In November, volunteers from Oak Hills Church paired up with
Littles for an afternoon on the ice skating rink at Northwoods
Ice Center. The group got into the pre-winter season by
bundling up in their coats and scarves and attempting their
skills on ice skates. Big Brothers Big Sisters gives a special
thank you to the volunteers from Oak Hills Church. Later in the
month, volunteers from the Hispanic Student Association and
Clear Channel and waiting Littles came together for an
exciting morning of non-stop video games at GameWorks.

breakfast tacos
and orange juice.
Little Sisters Audrey and Cassidy have a great

event was early, the Littles and volunteers had no problem
waking up for unlimited video games.

Match Support Matters
By: Match Support Specialist Denise Gardner
Well, it is a new year and a new chance to re-engage with your
Littles in your match. It is normal for us to settle back into
routines as the New Year begins and it gives us a chance to even
try something different and new in our matches.
As you get back into your communication and activity routines,
remember the following tid bits in dealing with your Littles:
Always Be Consistent: It is not just what you do with your Littles,
but the time you spend building the relationship. Remember
to do what you say you will do and to be around in their lives
as they continue to build trust and friendship with you.
Praise Your Little: Look for the things that your Little does that
can be rewarded. The more verbal and activity rewards you
can give to your Littles, the more they know you are paying
attention and helping to develop
the positive.
Model Good Listening: One of the
best things you can do is to give
your Little your full attention. Model with good eye contact
and reflective listening for your Little and you will be able to
engage quickly with your Little and learn more about them.
Lastly — have FUN! This is a great time of year to get out when
the weather is a little cooler and try new things. San Antonio
is full of fun museums, beautiful parks, interesting libraries,
great places to eat and so much more… talk to your Match
Support Specialist if you need some new ideas for the new
year and enjoy your time with your Little.

Rocking with
Hannah Montana

I wish everyone could have seen my Little Sister Celeste's eyes
grow as big as saucers when I told her a BBBS benefactor had
donated 2 tickets to Hannah Montana and did she want to
go? For the first time since I have known her, Celeste was
speechless! (At least for a few seconds.) Of course, that was
all she talked about on the way to, at and from the zoo
Saturday afternoon.
Her mom bought her a Hannah
Montana T-shirt, necklace, pin and
keychain guitar; she was wearing
all of that when I picked her up to
go the concert. She was talking
about Hannah and the Jonas
Brothers a mile a minute while we
drove to the AT&T Center. While
waiting in line, she was so excited
she couldn't stand still. Same thing
after we were seated (great seats!)
before the Jonas Brothers came on;
I started calling her Celeste Wiggle
Worm. She sang along with the
Hanna videos shown on the big
screens before the concert; she
knew all the words! Then the lights
went down and the squealing
LS Celeste at Hannah
started; the Jonas Brothers hit the Montana concert
stage – their first song was
actually one (the only one) I knew all night! Celeste watched
every move the boys made and, of course, sang along.
During intermission, again the Wiggle Worm came out as she
watched & sang with the videos. Then the big moment: The
lights went out and Hannah Montana came down to the
stage in a cage-like thing completely lit in pink light! That
just made the concert even better – her favorite singer AND
her favorite color! Hannah sang, then went off and came
back as her real-life self, Miley Cyrus (Celeste told me all these
things, ignorant adult that I am).
All the way home, and maybe for the next year, all Celeste
could talk about was seeing Hannah Montana. A HUGE
Thank You to the BBBS benefactor who donated the tickets
that made my Little Sister's dream night come true – a night
she will remember for the rest of her life!
