highest rate <strong>of</strong> widrawl in <strong>the</strong> country per sq. km. But till now water samples from any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

tube well in Dhaka City does not have any arsenic contamination.<br />

Upazilas and part <strong>of</strong> Upazilas having water from all aquifers expected to be safe from arsenic<br />

contamination is listed below (Map enclosed).<br />

A. The areas covered by Barind Residual Deposits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pleistocene Age.<br />

A.1 Barind Residual Deposits cover an area <strong>of</strong> 7,680 sq. km <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> central parts <strong>of</strong> Rajshahi<br />

Division.<br />

Twelve Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Bogra, Joypurhat, Naogaon, Nowabganj and Rajshahi Districts<br />

(Annex-2) are completely covered by Barind Residual Deposits. Aquifers below <strong>the</strong><br />

Red Clay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Upazilas are safe from Arsenic pollution.<br />

A.2. 32 Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Bogra, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Joypurhat, Naogoan, Natore, Rangpur and<br />

Sirajganj Districts (Annex-3) partially belong to Barind Geological District <strong>of</strong> Residual<br />

Deposits.<br />

B. The areas covered by Madhupur Residual Deposits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pleistocene Age.<br />

B.1. Madhupur Residual Deposits cover an area <strong>of</strong> 4058 sq. km. 2 Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Mymensingh<br />

and Tangail Districts (Annex-4) are completely covered by Madhupur Clay deposits.<br />

Aquifers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Upazilas are safe from arsenic contamination.<br />

B.2. 19 Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Comilla, Dhaka, Gazipur, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Narayanganj,<br />

Narsingdi<br />

and Tangail Districts (Annex-5) are partly covered by Madhupur Clay deposits.<br />

Aquifers within <strong>the</strong> Madhupur Clay Deposits are still Arsenic safe.<br />

C. The South Eastern Hills Region: Area covered by Pre-Holocene Sediments in <strong>the</strong><br />

Chittagong and Hill Tract Districts.<br />

C.1. All <strong>the</strong> Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Khagrachari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, and Districts <strong>of</strong><br />

South Eastern Hills Regions (Annex-6) belong to Bedrock Districts and are completely<br />

covered by Bedrock Deposits.<br />

C.2. Parts <strong>of</strong> 22 Upazilas <strong>of</strong> Chittagong, Sherpur, Habiganj, Maulivibazar, Sunamganj and<br />

Sylhet Districts (Annex-6) are situated within Bedrock Districts.<br />
