Noteworthy activities include <strong>the</strong> EU SENSOR (Sustainability<br />

Impact Assessment: Tools for Environmental, Social and<br />

Economic Effects <strong>of</strong> Multifunctional Land Use in European<br />

Regions) project, PLUREL (Peri-Urban Land Use Relationships:<br />

Strategies and Sustainability Assessment Tools for Urban-<br />

Rural Linkages) and LUPIS (Land Use Policies and Sustainable<br />

Development in Developing Countries), all <strong>of</strong> which involve<br />

numerous partner establishments in many countries around<br />

Europe.<br />

Structure<br />

Situated in a traditional research location, ZALF was founded<br />

in 1992 as a registered association and is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Leibniz Science Association. One half <strong>of</strong> its basic funding<br />

comes from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rural Development, Environment<br />

and Consumer Protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Brandenburg<br />

(MLUV) and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r half from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (<strong>BMELV</strong>).<br />

ZALF also attracts substantial competitive funds from third<br />

parties, accounting for around € 5.9 million in 2007. It has a<br />

241-strong workforce, <strong>of</strong> which 81 are scientists. Third-party<br />

funding is used to finance positions for 90 employees.<br />

ZALF comprises six institutes and a number <strong>of</strong> central<br />

organisations and working groups which work in line<br />

with its interdisciplinary approach:<br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Landscape Systems Analysis<br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Land Use Systems<br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Socio-Economics<br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Landscape Hydrology<br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Soil Landscape <strong>Research</strong><br />

ó Institute <strong>of</strong> Landscape Matter Dynamics<br />

ZALF facilities are completed <strong>by</strong> a research station charged<br />

with landscape monitoring and field experiments. Located<br />

in Dedelow, <strong>the</strong> station has outposts in Paulinenaue and<br />

Müncheberg.<br />
