R.J. <strong>Grey</strong> <strong>After</strong>-<strong>School</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong><br />
R.J. <strong>Grey</strong> offers several after-school clubs. This list varies every year based on the<br />
interests of students and availability of club advisors. Some clubs meet for only part of<br />
the year. Most clubs begin shortly after dismissal and end at 3:30. Students should listen<br />
to morning announcements for up-to-date information regarding these clubs and should<br />
always make arrangements ahead of time for transportation home.<br />
Anime Club<br />
• Advisor: Mr. Donovan (7 Green)<br />
• Anime Club meets every other week on Wednesdays, 2:15-3:15 in Room 301.<br />
• Anime Club is for students interested in Anime, manga, and other aspects of<br />
Japanese culture. We view Anime TV shows and movies, as well as read and<br />
draw manga comics. We are welcoming to anime "experts" as well as those who<br />
have just begun their journey into the world of anime and manga. Membership is<br />
not limited to those who can attend on a frequent basis.<br />
Art Club<br />
• Advisor: Mrs. Vlajinac (8 th Grade Art Teacher)<br />
• Meetings every other Tuesday from 2:15-3:30 in room 629<br />
• Whether you enjoy drawing and painting or crochet and fuse beads there is a<br />
place for you in Art Club! Focus for Art Club will include community service,<br />
different media/art-making experiences and preparing for the end of the year 'Arts<br />
Happening' event. Once the club is underway, participants can propose different<br />
directions that Art Club can possibly take. Specific art instruction on technique<br />
will not be given however, members are encouraged to bring artwork they have<br />
created or that is in-process to share with like-minded individuals. An interest in<br />
Visual Art is the only prerequisite for this club as all ability levels are expected<br />
and welcome.<br />
ASHA<br />
• Advisor: Mrs. Dragone (8 Green Spanish/French Teacher)<br />
• Members and mentors meet once or twice a week for 1-2 hours at 2:06 in room<br />
604 to plan and organize weekly events.<br />
• The word "ASHA" means "hope" in Hindi. The Junior High <strong>School</strong> ASHA is a<br />
community service club for students at the R. J. <strong>Grey</strong> Junior High <strong>School</strong> who are<br />
interested in raising consciousness and funds to build schools in impoverished<br />
areas around the world. The funds raised in <strong>2012</strong> are earmarked for building a<br />
school in India in collaboration with the Free the Children Foundation. The club<br />
meetings and fundraising events are supervised by volunteer students from the<br />
ASHA Club at the AB Regional High <strong>School</strong>, who act as "mentors" for the junior<br />
high school students.
Book Club<br />
• Advisor: Ms. Latham (Librarian) and Mr. Duclos (Guidance Counselor)<br />
• Book Club Book Club meeting times are posted on the website. From October to<br />
April, there will be a student meeting in the mornings and a student/parent<br />
meeting in the evening per month<br />
• Do you love to read? Love to discuss the characters and actions in the book you<br />
just devoured? Join our book club! Through the reading of pre-selected books,<br />
guided discussions, and sharing of thoughts and ideas, we hope to promote the<br />
love of learning for young adults and adults. Students will meet once a month to<br />
discuss the book and to plan to facilitate the larger adult and young adult book<br />
discussion night. We welcome all R.J <strong>Grey</strong> Community members (faculty, staff,<br />
students, parents, and administrators) to engage in this collaborative learning<br />
experience that reaches out beyond the pages. Please visit our website for<br />

Chess and Board Games Club<br />
• Advisor: Mr. Edmonds (7 Gold)<br />
• Meets most Thursdays from 2:15-3:15 and some occasional longer meetings<br />
• Activities include playing “Magic Card”- all are welcome!<br />
Creative Writing Club<br />
• Advisor: Ms. Kittredge (7 Red/8Orange)<br />
• Meets every other Tuesday from 2:15 until 3:30, Computer Lab B<br />
• This is a club for students who love to write creatively. Each meeting will begin<br />
with a different inspirational prompt, then members will be given lots of time to<br />
write. There will also be time for sharing feedback at some meetings. Students<br />
will have access to a computer lab during club time and will have the option of<br />
hand writing or word processing their work. The year will conclude with a special<br />
publication of our writing.<br />
Drama Club<br />
• Advisor: Mrs. Miller (Drama Teacher)<br />
• Meets on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of each month in the auditorium<br />
• The RJ <strong>Grey</strong> DRAMA CLUB is an organization that provides students who are<br />
interested in theatre an opportunity to produce and perform in non-musical plays.<br />
Meetings will include theatre games and workshops.<br />
• The Drama Club produces two theatrical presentations in the spring and the<br />
fall. Auditions are held for the acting roles in these shows. Crews assigned<br />
through sign-ups. Rehearsal schedules for the plays vary, but will always be held<br />
directly after school.<br />
• Does not meet while rehearsals for the school-wide MUSICAL are in process.
French Club<br />
• Advisor: Madame Gilfix (7 Blue)<br />
• Monthly meetings on Thursdays, usually from 2:15 to 4:15<br />
• Activities may include celebrating French holidays, playing French games,<br />
watching movies, cooking French food, and working on French related arts and<br />
crafts.<br />
Jazz Band<br />
• Director: Mr. Hickey (Band Director)<br />
• Meets Tuesdays, 2:30 to 3:30, in the JHS band room. First meeting: September<br />
25th<br />
• Attendance is mandatory each week.<br />
• Jazz band is open to all 7th & 8th grade band members. We'll perform a wide<br />
variety of music from the swing era through contemporary music of today<br />
Mathcounts<br />
• Advisor: Mr. Stameris (8 Red)<br />
• Meets Wednesdays from 2:15 to 3:30, in room 603<br />
• Mathcounts is a nationwide organization focused on encouraging math knowledge<br />
and education in the middle school years. Students work together to solve math<br />
puzzles and problems in the areas of statistics, discrete math, geometry, and<br />
algebra. This club is for strong math students interested in tackling tough math<br />
problems. The club teaches challenging math topics with the goal of winning the<br />
State MathCounts Tournament. You can learn more about Mathcounts at<br />

Open Gym-<br />
• Advisor: Mrs. Ahl (8 Green)<br />
• Open gym for basketball for boys and girls, 7 th and 8 th grade<br />
• Meets in the gym, 2:15 to 3:00<br />
• Always meets Tuesday and Thursday except between Thanksgiving and<br />
Feb vacation.<br />
Ping Pong Club<br />
• Advisor: Mrs. Rimpas (Health Teacher)<br />
• Meets Thursday afternoons in small gym from 2:30-3:30, beginning October 4th<br />
• This new club, initiated by several RJ <strong>Grey</strong> Students, will include students taking<br />
turns on 4 ping pong tables with games being played up to 11. Students will<br />
rotate through games. Feel free to bring a paddle.
RJ <strong>Grey</strong> Ski Club<br />
• Advisors, Ms. Murray (Main Office), Ms. Kondracki (7 Red), and Ms. Nichols (7<br />
Blue)<br />
• Meets for 6 Tuesdays beginning in January between 2:30 and 7:30pm.<br />
• The ski club boards busses and travels to Wachusett Mountain for afternoons of<br />
skiing, snowboarding and enjoying hanging out with other club members in the<br />
lodge.<br />
<strong>School</strong> Store<br />
• Advisor: Ms. Rizzone (room 402)<br />
• Students staff the RJ <strong>Grey</strong> school store before school, from 7:15 to 7:30 a.m.<br />
• Students help arrange the table display, as well as sell school items such as<br />
pencils, erasers, rulers, and white out. There is one meeting at the beginning of the<br />
year to explain the responsibilities of running the store and become familiar with<br />
the items being sold. Each student has an opportunity to select a morning they<br />
would like to help out. Even though the store is open all year, students are not<br />
obligated to stay throughout that time unless they wish to. Students who are<br />
unable to join at the beginning of the year are welcome to participate at any other<br />
time. Students have found the store a fun place to socialize, as well as a place to<br />
build experience with interacting with other students in a different role.<br />
Select Choir<br />
• Director: Mr. Charig (Chorus Teacher)<br />
• Meets Tuesdays in the JHS Choir Room from 2:10 to 3:30<br />
Spanish Club<br />
• Advisor: Ms. Watson (7 Red) and Ms. Calotta (8 Gold)<br />
• Meets monthly on second and fourth Thursdays of each month, beginning in<br />
October (additional meetings as needed) in room 308 from 2:06 to 3:30.<br />
• Spanish Club is an opportunity for students to enjoy the cultural aspects of the<br />
Spanish speaking world. We will be working on art projects, play board games,<br />
have cooking demonstrations and celebrate Hispanic fiestas. Several times during<br />
the year, we will have off-campus events such as movies and museum visits.<br />
Students do not have to study Spanish to be part of the club as we will conduct<br />
our meetings in English. Students are welcome to join later in the year if fall<br />
sports create a schedule conflict. We look forward to celebrating all things Latino<br />
with you!<br />
Speech Team<br />
• Advisor: Mr. Harvey (7 Blue)<br />
• Meets most Wednesdays, 2:30 to 3:30<br />
• Purpose: to practice public speaking skills in a variety of improvisational games<br />
and speech events. Students have the opportunity to compete at Sunday<br />
tournaments all over the Boston area.
Technology and Engineering Club<br />
• Advisor: Mr. Patendaude (8 th Minuteman Tech)<br />
• Meets on every other Tuesday in room 507 from 2:15-3:15. First meeting will be<br />
October 2 nd<br />
• Students will be able to work on different project such as rockets, robotics, as well<br />
as other projects related to different engineering fields<br />
Yearbook Club<br />
• Advisor: Ms. Weeks (8 Red)<br />
• Meets once a month as a whole group<br />
• The R.J. <strong>Grey</strong> Yearbook Staff is a yearlong group whose members help to create<br />
the R.J. <strong>Grey</strong> Yearbook. Some member responsibilities may include but are not<br />
limited to helping with interviews and advertisement of sales, determining page<br />
layouts, creating ideas for free yearbook space, helping with the distribution of<br />
yearbook, taking photographs, and entering data for various yearbook pages.<br />
The Yearbook Staff meets at least once a month as a whole group. Members will<br />
also be divided into smaller groups according to assigned tasks and will meet with<br />
the advisor Ms. Weeks as needed. In between club meetings, members may be<br />
assigned to take photos of team or school wide events or conduct staff and student<br />
interviews.<br />
Just as the yearbook is a crucial part of R.J. <strong>Grey</strong>, consistent participation is<br />
crucial to the success of the yearbook. Student commitment to this club should be<br />
consistent all year which means attending meetings as they are held, completing<br />
any duties on time and being responsible about various assigned tasks as they are<br />
given.<br />

choice for you!
