Dear Friends of the Cenacle,
Summer 2012
Volume 13, No. 3
Thank God for Google! I googled “songs about summer,” and found 124 of
them, and that’s only a partial list of the popular songs. Why is summer so worth
singing about? F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby provides an answer:
“…with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees…I had that
familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
Here at the new Cenacle Retreat Center, we’ve had that feeling about each
of the seasons we’ve lived through since we moved in last October. Life is always
beginning over again, and we thank God for that. We thank you, too.
Those of you who come to our retreats or for spiritual direction, who make
a donation for one of our Prayer Enrollment cards done in gold ink and beautiful
calligraphy, and those who knew our sisters at other Cenacles and want to help us to
continue our ministry here in Ronkonkoma make it possible for us to begin again in
every season to offer a sacred place and spiritual companioning for all who want a
closer relationship with God and a share in the abundant life Jesus promises to us.
Life isn’t just beginning over again. In this place, it’s the abundant life of the
Risen Christ that is beginning anew every day because you help us to do the work
God has called the Cenacle sisters and members of the Cenacle family to do.
Thank you for providing sunshine and great bursts of life for everyone who
comes through our doors.
Happy summer to each of you.
Thanks and blessings,
Sister Barbara Regan, r.c.
OUR MISSION
We work for the transformation of the world by awakening and
deepening faith with and for the people of our times.

Development Corner
Memorialize or Honor a Loved One
Now that the new Cenacle Retreat Center and Convent is open, you can still memorialize
or honor a loved one with an engraved brick or a tree marker. You can order an engraved
brick for the pathway that runs from the building toward the pond, or a larger brick
marker that would be placed under one of the many trees on the campus. This unique
way to honor or memorialize your loved one helps the Sisters continue their ministries
of prayer, retreat programs, spiritual direction, and prayer enrollment.
Your gift of $250 for a standard sized brick (4” x 8”), $500 for a large brick (8” x 8”), or $1,500 for a tree marker (also
8” x 8”) will go a long way to help the Cenacle Sisters with their mission here on Long Island.
We must accumulate 25 brick orders at a time for the engraving firm.
Therefore, please allow a few months before your brick is placed.
For information or to order, please call Jim Rennert in the development office at 631-471-0024.
The Cenacle Retreat center welcomes
Carmela Bergman as our new retreat office
manager. She comes to us with a background
in retreat house administration (here on Long
Island). She is a graduate of the Pastoral
Formation Institute, is a spiritual director,
and is in parish ministry.
Retreats and Programs
GUIDED RETREAT
“GETTING TO KNOW YOU”
Retreatants will be invited to spend time praying with Scripture,
asking, as St. Ignatius urges, for the gift of “getting to know
Jesus” more intimately. In this, we hopefully will come to like
him and so want to live like he lived and loved and trusted.
Presenter: Ed Salmon, S.J.
August 18-26, 2012
DIRECTED RETREAT
(minimum of 5 days)
Your director individually tailors with you and for you, a
directed retreat. The flow of each day allows you to move at
your own pace, includes a personal meeting with your spiritual
director on a regular basis, offers the opportunity to share in
daily Eucharist (celebrated by Fr. Jack Moore), and invites you
to spend your day, including meals, in prayerful silence.
HEALING YOUR FUTURE – SILENT RETREAT
When looking at the future, what keeps me from feeling really
happy? Perhaps it is anxiety over health, an ongoing difficult
relationship or the loss of a dream. Maybe it is a bigger
problem of surviving in a world with increasing violence,
global warming, and financial insecurity. Whatever we fear in
the future robs us of peace and health. Research says that those
who look forward to the future actually live 7.6 years longer
and tend to be happier and healthier. This retreat is based on the
Linns’ new book - Healing the Future: Personal Recovery From
Societal Wounding.
Presenter: Matt Linn, SJ
September 14 – 16, 2012
LOVE’S INNER WINE CELLAR – SILENT RETREAT
This is a silent contemplative retreat based on MEDITATIONS
ON THE SONG OF SONGS by St. Teresa of Avila, Carmelite
nun, mystic, reformer, and Doctor of the Church. Teresa uses
the exquisite images, symbols, and analogies of Chapters One
and Two of the SONG OF SONGS to teach foundational truths
in the life of prayer. Especially for you who were on the Wait
List last year!
Presenter: Joan Kellenberg, r.c.
THIRTY DAY RETREATS
We offer the 30 day Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
at anytime of the year.
Please call the Retreat Office at 631-588-8366 ext. 402
GOD IS EVERYWHERE!
We invite you to spend a refreshing day letting God remind you
that God is indeed everywhere! Sometimes we feel burdened by
the news of violence in the media. If this is true for you, come
notice the activity of God in our world and daily life. You may be
surprised to find goodness and grace in the most unlikely places!
Presenter: Beverly Bienemann, Cenacle Staff Associate,
and Kara McKenney, r.c.
September 16, 2012
10:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Maude Adams House
GIVING LIFE TO OUR WORDS WITH PEN & INK
Are you interested in exploring ways of being creative with our
alphabet letters, words, poems, and prayers? This is a workshop
for you! No experience is necessary. Paper, paints, felt pens and
ink will be provided. If you prefer steel nibs, please bring them,
along with their pens.
Presenter: Pam Falkowski, r.c., D. Min.
September 28-30, 2012
OUR FIRST MARRIED COUPLES’
WEEKEND RETREAT!
This will be a weekend to fall in love again! In this beautiful
setting we’ll have time to walk and talk, to share our lives and
reflect on our marriage relationship. No matter how long we’ve
been married, it’s always good to pause, reflect, and celebrate the
goodness of our love for our spouse.
Presenters: Beverly and Bob Bienemann,
Valerie and Michael Dunne
WE HAVE FOUR HERMITAGES ON OUR PROPERTY!
Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)
The spiritual practice of a solitary retreat is for the experienced
pray-er. It is a time of silence, free of daily distractions, to fulfill
your desire to deepen your relationship with God.
To discern if this experience may be for you, contact the
Retreat Office at 631-588-8366. The next step of the
discernment is a letter of recommendation from your spiritual
director. You will also need to complete our application, and
come for a personal interview if you live in the area, or have a
telephone interview if you live at a distance.
A minimum stay is three nights,
and a maximum stay is thirty days.
