<strong>Tour</strong> programme<br />

The present tour was organized mainly for participants wishing to observe and to photograph<br />

a wide selection of the almost 950 butterflies known from <strong>Ghana</strong>. There were ten participants,<br />

with Szabolcs <strong>Sáfián</strong> as the tour leader, and with Torben B. <strong>Larsen</strong> as accompanying<br />

commentator. It began in the Shai Hills Guinea savannah – part of the Dahomey Gap – and<br />

then moved north to the Aburi Botanical Gardens, a tiny remnant of the rainforests that<br />

clothed the Akwapim Scarp just 50 years ago. From there the tour went to the magnificent,<br />

and very special, Upland Evergreen forests of the Atewa Range in the Kibi area, and then to<br />

the Bobiri <strong>Butterfly</strong> Sanctuary in Moist Semi-Deciduous forest. From there we went south to<br />

Cape Coast to visit the now famous Kakum National Park in the Moist Evergreen forest zone,<br />

and then east to Ankasa on the border with Côte d’Ivoire, in the wettest rainforest habitat in<br />

<strong>Ghana</strong>, the Wet Evergreen Forest of Ankasa National Park. Time constraints did not allow us<br />

to approach the Guinea savannahs of northern <strong>Ghana</strong>, but more than 80% of <strong>Ghana</strong>’s<br />

butterflies are essentially forest species – and the Shai Hills savannah had already given a<br />

graphic impression of this very different habitat.<br />

Itinerary and the localities<br />

<strong>26</strong> th October – Arrival to Accra and Shai Hills Resort<br />

27 th October – Shai Hills Nature Reserve<br />

including the bat cave, and the tropical rainstorm which soaked us and the bus driver who<br />

abandoned us.<br />

28 th October – Aburi Botanical Garden<br />

Nice and gentle day with lots of interesting butterfly species. We have all learnt how furry a<br />

Lycaenidae larva can be.<br />

29 th October – Atewa Forest Reserve<br />

Gentle climbing from the main road, meeting with illegal loggers, the rain caught us again,<br />

after the rain some of us discovered the farmland above Asiakwa.<br />

30 th October – Atewa Forest Reserve<br />

We were transported to the heights of Atewa Range.<br />

31 st October – Bobiri <strong>Butterfly</strong> Sanctuary<br />

Walk around the compound, we had a very late but very delicious Red Red.<br />

1 st <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Bobiri <strong>Butterfly</strong> Sanctuary, accommodation at Bobiri Guesthouse<br />

Full day in Bobiri, Torben’s group got lost. Motto: UBA LUBA! The children peed on Sáfi’s<br />

tent.<br />

2 nd <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Travel to Kakum National Park<br />

Fantastic food at Hans Cottage Botel with Nile Crocodiles, good moth night at Kakum<br />

Guesthouse


3 rd <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Kakum National Park<br />

Early morning Canopy Walkway, than visiting Antiakwa which was a kind of<br />

disappointment, since we couldn’t find a trail into the forest. We’ve lost Mike taking a trail to<br />

the boundary line of the National Park.<br />

4 th <strong>Nov</strong>ember – ‘The Forest’ Ecotoursim Conservation Area, (Simon’s compound)<br />

Good but a bit muddy butterfly walk, with Forest Elephant dung. We have found lots of<br />

rewarding species later on.<br />

5 th <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Ankasa National Park, accommodation at Axim Beach Hotel<br />

Rainy afternoon around the gate of Ankasa NP. No success of finding 3 species of Oboronia<br />

for David.<br />

6 th <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Ankasa National Park, accommodation at Axim Beach Hotel<br />

Some members stayed in the Hotel for whale watching. The others went to Nkwanta Camp,<br />

where we found a 15 metres wide motorway into the forest.<br />

7 th <strong>Nov</strong>ember – Travel to Accra, evening flight to the UK<br />

Cultural visit at the slave fort of Cape Caslte, last shopping in Accra. Farewell.<br />

Summary of results<br />

During the tour the weather was not as clement as we normally expect at the time. On two<br />

occasions most of us probably got more thoroughly drenched by sudden thundershowers than<br />

we have ever been before. There is a good reason why the forests of <strong>Ghana</strong> are called<br />

rainforests! We hope that everyone on the team took such incidents with good spirits, though<br />

there might have been a bit of envy to a few members who had foreseen the rain and repaired<br />

to a “spot” in a neighbouring village, where shelter and cold beer was at hand!<br />

However, in all about 350 species were recorded during the relatively brief trip – that is<br />

approaching the total number of species in all of Western Europe. One in three of all <strong>Ghana</strong><br />

butterflies were recorded. Five or six additional species will be found when genitalia are<br />

examined. That is pretty impressive by any standards, not least taking the indifferent weather<br />

conditions into consideration – and also the fact that some 150 strict savannah species and<br />

Volta Region endemics were not available. However, none was a new country record for<br />

<strong>Ghana</strong> – which is an indication that the country has now been quite well researched. We are<br />

getting only one or two new country records a year and a species new to science only every<br />

few years. On the tour with “A Brush with Nature” in 2006 (20 Oct – 4 <strong>Nov</strong>) 439 species<br />

were recorded, but this was a longer trip, under better weather conditions, and with more<br />

collectors rather than photographers. In August 1996 a team of 15 very experienced American<br />

collectors recorded 450 species during 13 days in the field under the guidance of <strong>Larsen</strong> –<br />

essentially to all the same localities.<br />

There were about 40 new locality records from the sites visited – and all of these are among<br />

those forests being kept under close scrutiny since 1993. That might not seem like a lot … but<br />

it actually is. We have kept the places visited during the tour under close observation since<br />

1993/1994 and every new locality record is to be treasured. The reason that there are<br />

relatively few new records is that we now have a really good “take” on these <strong>Ghana</strong>ian<br />

forests. Nowhere else in the African rainforest zone do we have forests that have been so<br />

assiduously monitored, except for Kakamega Forest in Kenya where huge numbers of<br />

butterflies are available in Nairobi.


Table 1 summarizes the species recorded from individual localities during the trip and<br />

compares them to the recorded totals of these. We have not yet re-calculated the estimated<br />

totals for the localities in question. However, Atewa probably has about 700 species, Kakum<br />

650, Bobiri and Ankasa 630, Aburi more than 400, and Shai Hills a bit more than 150. The<br />

lacking positive records are all the rarest and most difficult to catch, so at this point further<br />

progress becomes a very slow process.<br />

* Collins, de Jong, Boersma, and local collectors continued collecting till late<br />

<strong>Nov</strong>ember, reaching a total of 410+ species for the entire month starting 27 October.<br />

** <strong>Larsen</strong> was not present for most of the Ankasa visit and weather was indifferent,<br />

resulting in a low total.<br />

In the Excel appendix the species recorded during the tour from different localities are given<br />

in red, compared with the total list of known species. Also included are the results from the<br />

field trip following the <strong>Butterfly</strong> Conference, given in green for comparison. At Bobiri Steve<br />

Collins and two local collectors for the African <strong>Butterfly</strong> Research Institute, Nairobi recorded<br />

no less than 250 species during 2.5 days (our team recorded almost 200 during 1.5 days).<br />

The most interesting records from the trip were:<br />

Cellular Harlequin - Mimeresia cellularis was found on Atewa, the first time <strong>Larsen</strong> ever<br />

saw the species west of the Dahomey Gap. There are a few records from the Volta Region and<br />

just one previous from Atewa. Its close relative, M. moyambina was caught only three times<br />

during the 20 th century, the type from Sierra Leone, three from Cote d’Ivoire, and a few from<br />

Atewa. Both are readily identifiable as unusual butterflies and it is amazing that they are seen<br />

so rarely, even in <strong>Ghana</strong>’s best exploited locality.<br />

Likpe Sapphire - Iolaus likpe was found dead on the forest floor close to the guesthouse in<br />

Bobiri <strong>Butterfly</strong> Sanctuary. This is only the second specimen from west of the Dahomey Gap,<br />

the first one was caught by Sáfi (which was also the first recorded female) just two years ago.<br />

The male holotype of this extremely rare species was bred by Father Theodore Maessen in


Like Mate. The larva was collected from the mistletoe infested citrus trees around his house in<br />

the 1970s.<br />

Black-Spotted Ciliate Blue - Cupidesthes mimetica from Kakum (Simon’ compound). This<br />

species [perhaps more than one] is poorly known, though widely distributed. Only good series<br />

from single localities will eventually bring this species to “heel”. Safi previously caught a<br />

few. <strong>Larsen</strong> did not find it during a follow-up visit.<br />

Bright Bush Blue - Cacyreus audeoudi was brought for inspection in a pill-box at Bobiri.<br />

<strong>Larsen</strong> initially dismissed it as the very common C. lingeus, but Safi insisted on closer<br />

investigation. We have not seen this from <strong>Ghana</strong> before, and there are few reliable records.<br />

The colour of the upperside is much deeper violet than in the common species and was<br />

immediately diagnostic. We make a practice of examining a few specimens from any locality<br />

visited and feel sure we have not seen it before. Our surprise at later finding it later also in<br />

Kakum was complete!<br />

Western Blue Beauty - Protogoniomorpha cytora has no records of early stages. A larva was<br />

seen on Atewa on a plant on which <strong>Larsen</strong> saw a female ovipositing many years ago. We<br />

hope that one or more of the participants have good photos [as they indeed were].<br />

Small Palm Nightfighter - Zophopetes ganda was collected by Sáfi as new to Kakum at light<br />

on the wall of the guesthouse at 5 a.m. along with few Monza cretacea. It probably visited the<br />

flowers of a nearby papaya plant. The species was later also found at Aburi. It is one of very<br />

few <strong>Ghana</strong> records and the first within the system of protected areas (National Parks)<br />

Scarce Forest Swift - Melphina tarace. Surprisingly, 3 specimens of this rare species were<br />

found during our 2 days visit in Bobiri. The first one came to moth light, the second one has<br />

got trapped in Torben’s balcony while he was reading there and the third one visited a<br />

Bougainville flower at the guesthouse. The species wasn’t recorded before the trip, despite the<br />

intensive activities during the last few years.<br />

White-Spotted Forest Swift - Melphina statira was photographed as new to Bobiri. Neither<br />

of us has seen this species in <strong>Ghana</strong> and there are just a handful of old records.<br />

Photography versus collecting<br />

Participants on the tour were not butterfly collectors … they were observers and<br />

photographers. Many superb photos were taken. But as the tour went ahead, most participants<br />

realized that as scientists we needed as many records as possible. They started taking<br />

“voucher photographs” – if they saw something they did not remember seeing before, they<br />

would snap a photo from a distance, and then perhaps try to get a really nice shot later. We sat<br />

through several thousand snaps and found many interesting species. We had never seen the<br />

rare skipper, Melphina statira, in <strong>Ghana</strong>, from where there are but a handful of old records …<br />

but there it was, a poor specimen in frightful condition on a wonky photograph from Bobiri,<br />

yet still readily identifiable and a new locality record. All in all maybe 20 of the 345 species<br />

were recorded only on pictures.<br />

The concept of “voucher photography” needs further development and incorporation into<br />

future photographic tours on a more systematic basis. This is particularly important when no<br />

specialists are present at the time and when areas where lists of species are not available.


Conclusion<br />

The weather was unfortunately not helpful. Though the number of species recorded was quite<br />

satisfactory, the number of individuals on the wing was rather low. Late October/early<br />

<strong>Nov</strong>ember is usually a good period but the timing of rainfall has been increasingly erratic in<br />

recent years. However, overall the trip should have given a good impression of the butterflies<br />

of the West African rainforest zone, with the day in the Shai Hills savannah showing the<br />

amazing contrast with the rainforest zone.<br />

Most participants have placed their pictures at the disposal of <strong>Butterfly</strong> Conservation, <strong>Ghana</strong><br />

and they will gradually be integrated into the website on <strong>Ghana</strong> butterflies<br />

(ghanabutterflies.uw.hu), as well as being used in publicity work and in popular science<br />

articles. A number of excellent photographs of Hesperiidae, that really capture the “essence”<br />

of some of these interesting butterflies, will be figured in <strong>Larsen</strong>’s proposed book on the<br />

“Skipper Butterflies of the Afrotropical Region”, probably not this one…<br />

And last but not least Torben B. <strong>Larsen</strong> and Szabolcs <strong>Sáfián</strong> would like to thank all<br />

participants the enthusiasm for butterflies and the genuine interest in their conservation they<br />

have expressed during the trip. It is very encouraging that butterfly-based eco-tourism might<br />

prove to be a practical tool to save rainforests and other important habitats in tropical Africa.
