When it comes to the time to receive Holy Communion
please do feel free to come up to the rail with everyone
else. If it is your custom to receive the bread and wine in
your own church, then you are welcome to do so here. If
you would rather not receive you can keep your hands
down to receive a blessing.
You may wish to remain in your seat, which is also fine.
Please try to stay for refreshments after the service.
If you or anyone you know, would like someone from the
church to visit, please let the Vicar or Wardens know. It is
important that we are made aware of people in particular
need or who would like to have a word with us.
Malcolm Sorby 27.3.47 - 3.3.13
Malcolm was a local lad, the younger of two boys born in
Katie Road Selly Oak. He met Jackie when they were both
working at Cadbury's and together had three children,
Karen, Martin and Claire. He was Boys Brigade, man-andboy
and was an energetic and enthusiastic participant in
activities for the young people of St Mary's. Known for
his love of walking holidays, he also enjoyed football and
cricket and he had a natural ability to perform to a crowd.
In quieter moments he could be found with his
crosswords, but also took great pleasure in a game of cards
with friends. Malcolm was a much-loved figure here at St
Mary's. He had a natural way with children and his
ministry both in church and in the wider community with
funerals was much-appreciated by many people. His
illness and death have been a great shock to us all. Our
prayers are of course with Jackie and the family; the funeral
will be on Mon 18 th March, 1.30pm here in church and the
family would welcome guests to the Appleton Suite at the
Cadbury Club afterwards. (Family flowers only, please.)
10%
Many thanks to all who have responded to the 10% appeal.
If you are able to make this commitment and haven't got
round to it, this is a gentle reminder.
Electoral Roll
Most 'old' names are now in for the new Electoral Roll.
Please do fill out a form if you have not already done so.
If you were not on the old Roll but consider yourself part
of the congregation here, please do also fill in a form. It
helps us to get a sense of who we are as a church.
Lady Chapel
The Lady Chapel is now all-but complete: a bit of plaster
and paint once the last of the tiles has been installed is all
that remains. We will have a small dedication of the
Chapel on Sunday 19 th May (Pentecost) in the evening
following the Vicarage Garden Party. Details to follow.
Women’s Group
Fifteen of our members attended the Women's Group
February meeting. It was a fascinating talk about the
Quaker religion given by Tim Peat - a bible studies tutor at
Woodbrooke Study Centre. The subject ranged from the
beginnings of the movement, right up to the work carried
out by the Quakers today. The evening was very
informative and most enjoyable!
The next meeting will be on the 21 st March at Morfudd's
house, 29 Fox Hill, at 7:30pm. It will be a practical session
with Morfudd showing us how to crochet! Come armed
with any spare wool you have and crochet hooks if you
already have them - spares will be provided if you don't
have any. All welcome whether you’re a novice or an
expert!
Passion Sunday
Please remember that we will be using incense during
the 10 o’clock service next Sunday.
There will also be Easter Cards to deliver around the
parish. We will be looking for teams of volunteers to give
an hour after church to get the bulk of these done and we
will meet for a bring-and-share lunch afterwards.
The Archbishop of Canterbury's Journey in
Prayer
In the days leading up to his enthronement, the new
Archbishop will make a pilgrimage around the Province of
Canterbury, inviting as many people as possible to join him
on this Journey in Prayer.
Archbishop Justin will visit one city on each day of the
journey, and spend that day in prayer. Those who join the
Archbishop in prayer will be able to pray in ways that
reflect the broad traditions of Anglican spirituality and
which welcome all ages.
On 15 th March the Archbishop will be visiting Coventry
Cathedral for about six hours (approx. 9.30 am to 3.30
pm). This is an informal gathering open to all for prayer
and Bishop David would like to encourage as many
Christians as possible to attend for at least part of the time.
