that the rabbis early <strong>on</strong> regarded prayer as<br />

a supplementary avodah.<br />

There are debates whether prayer is a<br />

lesser service than sacrifice, equal to it, or<br />

even superior. But no <strong>on</strong>e doubts that, <strong>on</strong>e<br />

way or another, it is avodah. And nowadays<br />

(“nowadays” being the last 2,000<br />

years) it is the <strong>on</strong>ly avodah in town.<br />

But, as those familiar with the history<br />

of Zi<strong>on</strong>ism and Israeli politics well know,<br />

there is another sense of avodah that<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceptualizes the very essence of what<br />

we might call “Zi<strong>on</strong>ist-Israeli civil religi<strong>on</strong>.”<br />
