A Different Kind<br />

of Sevens<br />

With the abject failure of the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> Sevens team at just about every tournament it<br />

showed up to, it was up to football to show how a truncated sport should really be played.<br />

This year’s <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> <strong>Service</strong> 7 aside Soccer<br />

Tournament was hosted by the members of Palmerston<br />

North Station for the first time after two successful years<br />

in Rotorua.<br />

Of the thrirteen teams that showed up, some put to<br />

socialising first, and playing second, while other teams<br />

focused on winning but placed a high value on enjoying<br />

the occassion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> teams started arriving Friday morning, Arena One<br />

where the event was to be held. was an absolute picture;<br />

newly painted goal posts and field markings, tents erected<br />

and the playing surface a dream. <strong>The</strong>re would be no<br />

excuse for anything other than good footy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Weather also came to the party – not a cloud in the<br />

sky with the thermometer hovering close to 30 degrees.<br />

Hydration, and plenty of it was the order of the day.<br />

By and large all the games were played in the spirit fitting<br />

such an occasion. One of the senior referees commented<br />

that he was pleasantly surprised at the standard of skills<br />

on offer and was impressed at the spirit that the games<br />

were played in.<br />
