Follow<strong>in</strong>g on from our success at teFAF showcase <strong>in</strong> 2011, this year <strong>Gibson</strong><br />

<strong>Antiques</strong> Ltd will be at the Maastricht F<strong>in</strong>e Art Open House 2012, which runs<br />

alongside teFAF from the 15th - 25th March 2012.<br />

We will be exhibit<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>e Ch<strong>in</strong>ese ceramics and works of art <strong>in</strong> the his<strong>to</strong>ric<br />

city centre of Maastricht at Guus Röell F<strong>in</strong>e Art & <strong>Antiques</strong> and will also be jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by Allan Hare, specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e furniture and Deon Viljoen, show<strong>in</strong>g colonial<br />

works of art.<br />

We do hope that you will come and see us <strong>in</strong> this elegant 18th century <strong>to</strong>wnhouse,<br />

which is open every day between 11am and 6pm.<br />

For those who are look<strong>in</strong>g for new places <strong>to</strong> d<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Maastricht a gastronomic<br />

d<strong>in</strong>ner for up <strong>to</strong> 30 people will be served each even<strong>in</strong>g at the gallery at 7.30pm.<br />

each pa<strong>in</strong>ted with sprays of classic lotus flowers with<strong>in</strong> scroll and lappet borders.<br />

similar vases are <strong>in</strong> the Collection of Augustus the strong, now <strong>in</strong> the state Art<br />

Collections, Dresden. Duplicates from the Royal collection were sold at Rudolph<br />

Lepke’s Kunst Auctions Haus <strong>in</strong> 1919. Lot numbers 332 and 333, illustrated<br />

on plate 29 of the auction catalogue, show a similar pair of vases.

Pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> the centre with two beautiful Ch<strong>in</strong>ese maidens <strong>in</strong>spect<strong>in</strong>g bonsai<br />

trees beneath a gnarled prunus tree with<strong>in</strong> a fenced garden all with<strong>in</strong> a ‘pie-crust’<br />

moulded and foliate border, the reverse pa<strong>in</strong>ted with scattered floral sprigs<br />

<strong>in</strong> iron red.<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> the centre with a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese maiden sitt<strong>in</strong>g at a table play<strong>in</strong>g a Q<strong>in</strong><br />

watched by a gentleman hold<strong>in</strong>g a fan before a garden pagoda with a young boy<br />

attendant prepar<strong>in</strong>g tea, all with<strong>in</strong> a moulded ‘pie-crust border’ set with four<br />

vignettes conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g goldfish and butterflies, the reverse pa<strong>in</strong>ted with<br />

scattered floral sprigs.<br />

Of l<strong>in</strong>gzhi fungus moulded form, brightly pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> shades of p<strong>in</strong>k,<br />

yellow and blue aga<strong>in</strong>st a green ground.<br />

the ‘sacred fungus’ is a symbol of immortality.<br />

After an archaistic bronze form, the<br />

three legged vessel f<strong>in</strong>ely moulded<br />

covered <strong>in</strong> a greenish-blue glaze.<br />

Of simple elegantly potted form, the classic ‘brick red’ clay <strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>to</strong><br />

the base with a scholarly eight-character poem:<br />

Y<strong>in</strong> hua yong yue, p<strong>in</strong> zhu p<strong>in</strong>g cha: ‘Recit<strong>in</strong>g flower poems and s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

the moon, play<strong>in</strong>g the flute while apprais<strong>in</strong>g the tea’.<br />

figural and landscape scenes, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g p<strong>in</strong>e, prunus, chrysanthemum and carp,<br />

the <strong>in</strong>terior with a central roundel enclos<strong>in</strong>g a figure of a scholar with<strong>in</strong> a further<br />

panelled border conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g millet, prunus, bamboo, lotus, birds and <strong>in</strong>sects.<br />

Well pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> underglaze-blue with precious objects <strong>to</strong> the centre with<strong>in</strong> a diaper<br />

work panel, the shaped moulded rim with panels enclos<strong>in</strong>g peaches, scrolls, books,<br />

double gourds and other auspicious objects.<br />

the slender pear-shaped bottle brightly pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> underglaze-blue with four<br />

moulded peach-shaped car<strong>to</strong>uches with stylised fruit and diaper work <strong>in</strong>terspersed<br />

with four panels conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g birds, flowers and fruit, the neck with precious objects<br />

suspended from cords with<strong>in</strong> a ruyi and floral mon diaper work borders.<br />

13. A rAre cH<strong>in</strong>ese ‘krAAk PorseLe<strong>in</strong>’ ‘eGret-mArkeD’ DisH<br />

m<strong>in</strong>G DYnAstY, wAnLi PerioD, circA 1595-1605<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> smoky <strong>to</strong>nes of underglaze-blue with a pair of pheasants perched on a<br />

rocky mound beneath a gnarled p<strong>in</strong>e tree with l<strong>in</strong>gzhi-<strong>in</strong>spired swirl<strong>in</strong>g clouds, all<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a shaped panelled border conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g birds, flowers and <strong>in</strong>sects, the underside<br />

with a moulded border with petal-shaped panels conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g alternat<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>gzhi<br />

sprigs and bees, the centre with the egret mark.<br />

attendants, all aga<strong>in</strong>st a seeded biscuit ground moulded and enameled with<br />

flower sprays, the domed covers with seated lion-dog knops.<br />

with<strong>in</strong> moulded studs and lappet borders, the <strong>to</strong>p and either side pierced with<br />

conjo<strong>in</strong>ed cash medallions.<br />

“the arms are of Mathew of Llandaff, st. Kew, and the Leeward islands....Colonel<br />

Abednego Mathew (descended from a Welsh family liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Devon and Cornwall<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce the fifteenth century) was Governor of st. Kitts <strong>in</strong> the Leeward islands and<br />

received lands there <strong>in</strong> compensation for his family’s considerable losses <strong>in</strong> the Civil<br />

War. His son, William....marry<strong>in</strong>g Cather<strong>in</strong>e, Baroness Van Leemput.....descended<br />

For the Western market, boldly pa<strong>in</strong>ted with a central double-gourd shaped vase<br />

depict<strong>in</strong>g a european gentleman <strong>in</strong> the central panel flanked by european mask<br />

handles, issu<strong>in</strong>g full blown flowers and foliage, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g peony and a tulip,<br />

all on an irregular three-legged stand, the border set with four leaf-shaped panels<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g peony <strong>in</strong>terspersed by groups of five song birds reserved on a black<br />

ground, picked out <strong>in</strong> iron-red and highlighted <strong>in</strong> gild<strong>in</strong>g, the underside<br />

with floral sprigs.<br />

such f<strong>in</strong>e and large dishes were popular <strong>in</strong> europe <strong>in</strong> the late 17th and early 18th<br />

centuries and several examples may be found <strong>in</strong> the Collection of Augustus the<br />

strong, K<strong>in</strong>g of Poland and elec<strong>to</strong>r of saxony, who furnished his palaces <strong>in</strong> Dresden<br />

with oriental porcela<strong>in</strong>s at this period.<br />

the sturdy steed modelled stand<strong>in</strong>g on a slightly domed unglazed base,<br />

the saddle and blanket covered <strong>in</strong> a mottled <strong>to</strong>r<strong>to</strong>iseshell glaze, the horse’s body<br />

splashed <strong>in</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g ochre on a pale straw coloured glaze.<br />

Each pa<strong>in</strong>ted after a draw<strong>in</strong>g by Robert Bonnart, engraved by his brother Nicolas,<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ally titled ‘Symphonie du Tympanum, du Luth et de Flute d’allemagne’ <strong>in</strong> vivid<br />

<strong>to</strong>nes of cobalt blue with a fashionable lady play<strong>in</strong>g a dulcimer, accompanied by<br />

two gentleman play<strong>in</strong>g a lute and a flute, the rim with a border of eight lotus petal<br />

shaped landscape panels, the underside with bamboo sprigs.<br />

and on the cover of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Export Art and Design. Another from the Mottahedeh<br />

Collection, illustrated <strong>in</strong> Howard & Ayers, Ch<strong>in</strong>a for the West, volume i, p.77, no.35;<br />

and <strong>in</strong> the Vic<strong>to</strong>ria & Albert Museum, London, C 781-1910. Recently discussed<br />

by M.A. P<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> de Ma<strong>to</strong>s, The RA Collection of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Ceramics, volume ii, London,<br />

2011, p. 250-1, no. 332 the same subject has been found on t<strong>in</strong>-glazed<br />

earthenware tiles <strong>in</strong> Holland, so it is likely wares of this design were<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended for the Dutch market.

q<strong>in</strong>G DYnAstY, 2nD HALf 19tH centurY<br />

each modelled stand<strong>in</strong>g, their plumage picked out <strong>in</strong> red, blue, grey and white<br />

enamels, the feathers f<strong>in</strong>ely <strong>in</strong>cised, on later naturalistic gilt-metal legs, pierced<br />

and carved rosewood cloud-scroll stands.<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese mythology the Crane symbolises immortality, as well as be<strong>in</strong>g a symbol<br />

for high rank and is the chosen mount for the immortals.


28. A PAir of cH<strong>in</strong>ese cLoisonne fiGures of YeLLow Deer<br />

q<strong>in</strong>G DYnAstY, qiAnLonG PerioD (1736-1795)<br />

Modelled stand<strong>in</strong>g, fac<strong>in</strong>g left or right, their coats yellow with white spots, their<br />

eyes also picked out <strong>in</strong> white enamel, the ears, horns, tails and legs gilt-metal.<br />

the animal pa<strong>in</strong>ter and sculp<strong>to</strong>r John Macallan swan studied at the Lambeth<br />

school of Art under W. s. Frith, and like many others, then went on <strong>to</strong> the Royal<br />

Academy schools, <strong>in</strong> 1872. two years later he went <strong>to</strong> Paris, where he spent 4-5<br />

years under Gerome, then under the animal sculp<strong>to</strong>r Fremiet, and the pa<strong>in</strong>ters<br />

Bastien-Lepage, Henecker and Dagnan-Bouveret, all this mak<strong>in</strong>g him ‘perhaps as<br />

French as an englishman could well be’. He then settled <strong>in</strong> London, convenient for<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g animals and animal ana<strong>to</strong>my at London Zoo. it was not until 1878 that<br />

he sent his first work <strong>to</strong> the Royal Academy (Dante and the Leopard), and his<br />

reputation was on the Cont<strong>in</strong>ent only, until 1889. <strong>in</strong> that year, his picture at the<br />

Academy, the Prodigal son, was bought under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest.<br />

He was elected ARA <strong>in</strong> 1894, had an exhibition at the F<strong>in</strong>e Art society <strong>in</strong> 1897,<br />

and became RA <strong>in</strong> 1905.

is recorded that he was a pa<strong>in</strong>ter active<br />

<strong>in</strong> shanghai, Hong Kong and Fujian<br />

and shows a portrait of a boy <strong>in</strong><br />

watercolour on ivory.<br />

you have harmony and unity <strong>to</strong>gether for one hundred years. Whilst the peony and<br />

rock work further adds wealth, honour and longevity <strong>to</strong> that relationship and the<br />

pomegranate numerous offspr<strong>in</strong>g!<br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g a build<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> two beautiful maidens gaz<strong>in</strong>g from the first floor<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow, the sides decorated with prunus blossoms, lotus flower and precious<br />

objects, the <strong>in</strong>terior pla<strong>in</strong> red, orig<strong>in</strong>al h<strong>in</strong>ges and lockplate.<br />

the shouldered lobed body deeply carved with four landscape panels depict<strong>in</strong>g<br />

young boys search<strong>in</strong>g for peaches, observed by scholars on fenced garden terraces,<br />

all with<strong>in</strong> classical mounta<strong>in</strong>ous landscapes, scattered with p<strong>in</strong>e trees with laconic<br />

cloud scrolls, all reserved aga<strong>in</strong>st a deeply carved lotus flower ground, the waisted<br />

neck and footrim carved with stylised stiff-leaved lappets aga<strong>in</strong>st foliate cell<br />

and diaper work.<br />
