A. galeatum is often a tall plant reach<strong>in</strong>g more than<br />
four feet <strong>in</strong> height. Its species name comes from <strong>the</strong><br />
word galea mean<strong>in</strong>g helmet which refers to <strong>the</strong><br />
helmet-like spa<strong>the</strong> which completely encloses and<br />
hides <strong>the</strong> spadix. The unique spa<strong>the</strong> is red grad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
towards green <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper half. The leaflet is<br />
coarsely textured due to <strong>the</strong> numerous ve<strong>in</strong>s which<br />
are purplish underneath. Rich, evenly moist soil is<br />

species, this upright begonia is splendid. Smooth,<br />

seedl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his neighbour Diane’s garden. It has<br />
proven to be vigourous and hardy <strong>in</strong> his garden <strong>in</strong><br />
Madison, Wiscons<strong>in</strong> for 5 years. Looks equally good<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shade border or conta<strong>in</strong>ers. Very showy <strong>in</strong><br />

plants of contrast<strong>in</strong>g foliage. Add a small measure of<br />

lily takes seven years to bloom from seed and <strong>the</strong>n<br />
dies, leav<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d bulblets that will bloom <strong>in</strong> two to<br />

We had a few sample plants last year that we<br />
adored. Huge peach coloured leaves with a very<br />
showy white overlay and a large lush habit. This plant<br />
makes a Hosta-like bold foliage statement, except, of<br />
course, it's evergreen. Foliage colour changes from<br />
peach orange tones <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g to rose to rose<br />
purple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall through w<strong>in</strong>ter, and always with a<br />
decorative white veil. From H. villosa breed<strong>in</strong>g so will<br />
be vigorous and grow well <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> humid Pacific<br />
