COMMODORE S
CORNER
With the weather getting better and better activity at the Club is
back in full swing! One of the best and busiest Aprils I can remember
has flown by with lots of great activities and events and May will be no
different.
April activities started with 2011 Bay Waveland Yacht Club's Re
view of Fleet weekend and, thanks to so many hard working volunteers,
it was great! Saturday, the Commodore's Cup Regatta had 4 Flying Scots
to officially kick off the sailing year. Cary Trapani and his Race Commit
tee headed by young Harry Chapman did a great job running the
races. That evening the Club hosted a fantastic Bail the Bilge/Membership Party organized by
House Committee Chairman, Margene Dawson. I particularly want to thank Margene for the great
job she did in putting together such a great event. As the centerpiece of our Membership Drive, lots
of prospective members were treated to great food and music. On Sunday morning the Review of
Fleet started at 11:00 AM. The flag raising was really special with Jessica Gordon treating everyone
to a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. Following the presentation BYWC's finest boats
paraded in front of the Club. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious lunch buffet prepared by our tal
ented staff with music from the New Orleans Jazz Band with our own Walter Chamberlain. Con
gratulations to Chuck Breath who won the best boat contest with his beautiful homemade wooden
boat! The entire day went off without a hitch thanks to the hard work and great planning by our
Fleet Captain / Chaplin, Commodore Ted Dawson. Thank you.
The weekend of April 16 17 was also loaded with terrific events. On Saturday we held the
Annual Jordan River Regatta with 5 Flying Scots Participating. On Sunday, our youngest members
enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt while everyone (more than 160 served) enjoyed the Annual Harry s
Crawfish Boil under the club. Chief boil master, Harry Chapman, and his crew of Corky Hadden (co
chef), Josh Magee and Roger Ericson (Sous Chefs), Molly Hadden (Chief Coordinator) and Jackie
Wintruba, Roy Troendle, and Kathi Troendle (Servers) served up some of the best crawfish I have
ever had! Special thanks also goes to our Entertainment Chairman Becky Trapani for organizing
the Easter Egg Hunt and the entertainment for the Crawfish Boil. The month was capped off with
our annual Easter Brunch.
The Wednesday Night Races and buffet are doing great also. There are usually several boats
on the water competing and the diners are really enjoying the return of the buffet. The Summer
Sailing Series starts this month and Sailing Camp will begin at the end of this month. The pool is
open on the weekends and the fishing season is in full swing. We can only hope that this type of ac
tivity will continue to build a contagious desire for everyone to encourage new members to join us
don t forget, you have until the end of May to take advantage of the Membership Drive!
Finally, I want to thank Tony and Jolynne Trapani for generously donating their beautiful
playground set to the Club. We will soon have it up and ready for our kids to enjoy.
MANAGERS TURN
GEORGE H. CONSTANCE, CCM, CCE
May signals the start of summer, but before we start with the upcoming events a few
thoughts about April events. Bail the Bilge and new member party was a great success with over
100 members and guests in attendance. Various committees displayed printed information about
the varied club activities. A big thank you is in order for Margene Dawson who organized the event
along with Kathleen Jenkins and Nancy Finalson for arranging hors d oeuvres for the party. Review
of the Fleet was honored with a beautiful sunny day with the blessings of Ted Dawson and his di
vine influence for this special occasion. The Color Guard, Flag Raising and the vocals of Jessica
Gordon singing the National Anthem gave us the meaning of what a great country America is and
the pride we have in our club. Commodore Randy Santa Cruz and his daughter Reid won first place
in the Commodore Cup Regatta April 9 th . The pre Easter Egg Hunt was coordinated by Becky
Trapani, Entertainment Chairman. Harry s Crawfish Boil followed with a sellout crowd.
May is chock full of member events starting with Cinco de Mayo on the 5 th we will serve a
mini Tex Mex buffet along with drink specials to celebrate the occasion. Mother s Day Buffet is May
NOTICE OF POLICY CHANGE
You may be aware that many local GYA clubs have recently changed their policies as it relates to
giving visiting members of other GYA clubs reciprocal charging privileges. Due to the difficulties
encountered in charging purchases back to a visitors home club, and several collection issues in
volving visiting guests, many clubs are doing away with reciprocal charging privileges and are
now requiring that guests pay their bills with a credit card rather than allowing visitors to charge
back to their home club. Reciprocal use is still allowed, only the charging privileges have been
changed. Please be aware that at its April meeting, the BWYC Board of Governors approved a
similar policy change to eliminate reciprocal club charges at BWYC and requires that visiting GYA
club members pay for their purchases at BWYC with a credit card. This does not change our long
standing policy of giving members of other GYA clubs reciprocal use privileges at BWYC.

Ladies Line
May 2011
Hi Ladies,
Dot Kersanac-Burns, President
228-326-5527
Looking back to April, we had wonderful weather for our annual Review of the Fleet, good turnout, and
usual great eats as well as fantastic music by Walter s Jazz Band following a delightful Bail the Bilge and
Prospective Members party the previous night. To add to the event, the sax playing in the background in
the bar area was a very special touch.
Wednesday night sailing is continuing with gusto and with such beautiful weather, more and more
members and guests are attending luncheons, dinners, and just relaxing and enjoying the Bay breeze off
the porch. If you haven t had the opportunity yet, you re really missing out on a wonderful event!
I m sure the Easter Egg Hunt was a great success as well as the usual annual Harry s Crawfish Boil sell
out. Then, of course, was the Easter Buffet and hopefully, everyone had a wonderful Easter with family
and friends! And congratulations to the winner of THE GRAND RAFFLE!!
Looking into our May events, we have the Mother s Day Buffet on the 8 th HAPPY MOTHER S DAY
TO MOMS, GRAMS, AND GREAT-GRAMS. Also on the 7 th is a benefit bingo for Boys and Girls Club
of America. Tickets are available from Kathleen Jenkins and Susan Carron (our Outreach Co-chairs)
please help support such a worthy cause (our new facility in the Bay needs your extra support in its initial
phases).
The annual Bridge Fest has expanded to two days this year-- May 14 and 15 th -- where we ll have on
display our Wagon of Cheer as we kick off our annual raffle. Chair for this event is Nancy Finlason and
tickets will be available starting at the Bridge Fest, continuing here at the Club, from LAUX members,
with drawing at the Deacon John dance. Hope to see ya at some of these events!
