NRMA INSURANCE
Finding the right kind of insurance can be hard, especially when you own a rare and valuable
vehicle that has unique insurance needs.
There are a number of things you should consider when looking for insurance for your special
vehicle.
Make sure the policy has an Agreed Value option. This allows you to include extras such as any work that
has been done to restore or improve its condition, that wouldn’t usually be considered in a standard market
value.
The option of Salvage retention is especially important for owners of veteran, vintage or classic vehicles, as
this feature allows owners to keep the wreck after an accident as a potential to rebuild or a source of parts.
Please review conditions of this carefully as with some insurers there is an extra cost involved or the vehicle
has to be of a certain age.
Many restorers of veteran, vintage or classic vehicles require cover for vehicles under restoration. Make sure
your vehicle is covered on and off the road.
Other policy features such as choice of repairer are also worth considering.
The most important thing to remember is to always read your policy documents and weigh up all the pros and
cons, financial or otherwise, because only you can decide what cover is best for your vehicle.
With NRMA Insurance we will take as much care of your classic vehicle as you do.
Our Veteran, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Insurance policy is designed for vehicles used for hobby and recreational
purposes and includes cover up to the agreed value, faultless excess and retention of salvage after
an accident (for vehicles manufactured prior to 31/12/1980).
As a bonus, you may be eligible for NRMA Traveller Care, at no extra cost for vehicles over 15 years of age
that break down more than 100kms from home within Australia. This gives you extra help if you run into problems
away from home, and provides accommodation, car rental and an extended towing service. Subject to
certain conditions.
Give us a call on 1800 646 605 or visit our website at www.nrma.com.au to discuss your vehicle’s insurance
needs.
Hi all. It’s funny how you can change you mind about stuff as the years go by.
When I first bought our house, everyone said “You’ll have to sell that valiant to get a deposit”.
“Pigs bum….” I said, “I’ll always have that car”. I was right at the time. I didn’t need to sell the Val, and we got
by. But as the years go on I think more and more about selling the old girl. That inevitably makes me start
wondering what it’s worth. Personally, I’m a typical tighta**e Valiant man—I think the cars are worth peanuts
because—hey—they’re Valiants. So fast forward to a few weeks back and I’m at Harry’s Café deWheels and a
guy walks up to me and—deadly serious—offers me $15,000 for the car.
I laughed. I said “Mate…..the paints a bit old now, you should see it in the daylight”. He didn’t care. He gave me
his business card and I thought nothing of it. The thing is if someone is quite prepared to walk up on the street
and offer that, what might they really be worth when negotiating ?
What’s my point ? As I get older, and drive it less, it certainly did get me wondering whether or not it’s time to
let someone else enjoy it—the way I used to—but these days it kind of just sits. I guess that’s what happens
sometimes when you have something for so long. Tastes change, as do priorities.
Then, there’s times like today when I took it to put some fuel in for the drive to All Chrysler Day this week. It
drove great and even in it’s dusty, dirty state had people gawking at it every set of lights. “Yep….still drives
good” I thought.
Gone are the days when Vals were the poor country cousins. Look after that old Chariot, and realise it’s real
value—be that in the form of “cash”, or something more sentimental.
Welcome to our newest R&S Club Members
Warwick Nicklin
Since our last Membership Report, we welcome Barrie and Lorna Osborn from Rossmore in
Sydney’s West, and Pauline Carroll from Mendooran.
Barrie and Lorna Osborn are no strangers to many of us, being long time stalwarts of the Chrysler Restorers
Club of Australia. Barrie has been the CRCA Secretary pretty much.....forever – or at least since Walter P.
Chrysler wore short pants. Barrie and Lorna for a long time were the “King & Queen” of 1938 Dodges, having
owned several, including a rare coupe.
Speaking of ’38 Dodges brings many memories to me, as it was in my Dad’s ’38 that I taught myself to drive,
and used it for my first couple of years as a driver. But I digress. They also own the 1933 Chrysler CT Royal 8
coupe that was the car behind the formation
of the CRCA. “So why have they now
joined our Club”, I hear you ask? They
have finally seen the light and now have
an “S” Series added to their stable.
SV1 -2 - 667.
Welcome to the “R & S” Club, and we
hope to see you at many of our functions.
Pauline Carroll has re-joined our Club after a long absence.
She moved to “Mendooran” some 23 years ago, and we all know where Mendooran is , right ? For those who
don’t, it’s a little town on the Castlereagh Highway, between Dunedoo and Gilgandra. If you ever go there it’s
easy to find Pauline’s house - it’s the one full of “S” Series Valiants.
Pauline says that when she was last in our Club, her Membership No. was “36”. She also says she is now able
and willing to travel to events that our
Club may hold, and we look forward to
seeing her. Apparently she knows
quite a few “R” and “S” owners out her
way, with beautifully restored cars.
Mendooran sounds like “Valiant Heaven”.
She has 4 “S” Series Valiants – 3 autos and
a manual. Two of them are red, another
green, and one is a spare parts car.
Welcome Back Pauline.
“Should we get a HUMMER....no, a VALIANT will do”. —Peter.
I’m pretty sure that’s what was said when my mate from
work was discussing what kind of vehicle his daughter
would like to go to her Year 12 Formal in. Mind you.....it
may have also had something to do with the fact all the
other usual “party cars” were already hired out, but
nonetheless, the old Val got to take 3 stunners out to
their formal at Bicentennial park near the Olympic
Stadium.....all the way from downtown Ingleburn.
Seems that Club Registered vehicles can do stuff like this
relatively simply these days, so long as the paperwork is
in order. Ticks me off a little because I missed taking my
own daughter to her Year 10 Formal because I wasn’t
sure I’d be allowed to drive the car.
In any case, the old chariot was polished up as well as it could be (there’s not too much Electric Blue paint left
on the old girl), and about 100 prayers were said that it would make the trip without breaking down.
What could go wrong ??
Nothing, in fact. After worrying about how it would go in a line of cars at the formal, or flying along in peak
hour traffic, the Valiant purred along and went as good as it ever has. Great in fact. To be honest, we flew past
2 Hummers going to the same Formal—GO THE VAL. After getting the 3 girls to the “do”, my mate jumped in
and we headed back home—via Harry’s cafe DeWheels for a TIGER and a Pepsi Max. It was here I was offered a
sum of money for my car—maybe it doesn’t look as bad as I reckon. I actually wish I’d photographed it at
Harry’s—God I love neon lights....especially when they make my car look a million dollars.
Anyway, that’s the guts....another page filled.
Eastern Creek Classic Display Day.
Paul Sidney—our 13 year old R&S Reporter.
Each year Shannons Insurance and the Council of Motor Clubs (C.M.C) put on a huge Display Day at Eastern
Creek International Raceway. It features over 1,500 vintage, veteran and classic vehicles and motorcycles from
all makes of Clubs, with parade laps around the track as well as vintage bus rides etc. This year it was held on
the 18th and 19th August.
I woke up to the voice of my father saying “Wake up Paul—we’re running late NOW!”
After about another 5 minutes of being lazy and sleeping in, I sprung out of bed as quick as I could to go and
take the car keys off him so I could start the Valiant before he had a chance. After a bit of pumping the accelerator
and turning the key the car finally started up. About 20 minutes later we were on the road to Eastern
Creek.
The long and boring trip was only made worth it because we were in the Valiant, and not our normal, boring
looking Camry. When we went through the gate we were guided to the Pit Lane where we would be parking
for the day. It was a pretty good spot to park, because you get a good view of all the cars that go around the
track. When we parked we all got out and said “hello” to everyone before my friend Ryan (who had come
along for the day) and I were off looking at all the stores and some of the cars.
The first store we went to was one for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, which had a beautiful, blue
AP5 Valiant out the front, and a lady inside selling tickets to win it. Each ticket was $5, but it was worth it for
the prize. When I bought a ticket for me and dad, the lady was telling us that they had to raffle a Valiant
because if they got a Ford, the Holden fans would
get angry, and if they got a Holden, the Ford fans
would get angry. After me and Ryan had bought
some raffle tickets for the AP5, we went and saw
some guys with a Ferrari, a race car and another
Supercar. We stood there looking at them all when
then the owner of the Ferrari came up to us and
asked if we would like to sit in it. Of course we said
“YES” (who wouldn’t want to sit in a car worth over
$200,000). It had leather seats and was really
roomy and very comfortable. He told us how it was
brand new and they had bought it to “Rent out” to
do hot laps around the track.
We soon got bored of sitting in the car and looking at
the other cars so we decided to go back to the Valiant.
By this time there were many people there from our
Club. I went and talked to Dad while Ryan went to
watch the cars go past yelling “Honk your horn”
constantly (even though almost none of them
honked). Failing to get some money off Dad, I called
Ryan over and we went to the other side of the track.
There we saw some pretty cool cars like one that was
sparkly, and the Lamborghini Club. We looked at every
single car including looking in the car park for some
people who couldn’t be bothered entering. Sadly we
didn’t see any old cars in the car park so we just got ice
cream and watched the cars go past for a while longer.
R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 8 of 24 Issue 155

When we went back to the side we were parked on, all of the stores had been set up so we looked through all
of them and I found a tin R Series poster/sign to get Dad as a birthday present (which was about 2 weeks
earlier……..whoops). When I handed it to him he was thrilled to get it. He told me that the others had gone to
have a good look at the AP5 that was in the raffle , and that everyone was picking out things wrong with it.
About an hour or two later we went around the track in the Valiant. Sadly we didn’t get to go very fast because
of the safety car and stuff like that, but it was still fun going around a track in a 50 year old car that v8 supercars
race around these days. It went really fast (as usual) and we were back in the pit lane 10 minutes later.
When we got back we all just stood around
for another hour watching the cars go by and
talking to some Club Members. A few minutes
before we left the Lamborghini Club
went around the track and when they got to
where they were supposed to go in, me and
Ryan made them rev their engines as loud as
possible which was really fun and loud. When
the Lamborghini’s had gone in Dad called me
and Ryan over to go home, so we helped everyone
pack up and were off.
Eastern creek was fun this year, especially to
celebrate 50 years of Valiant.
Please note—the picture below is the view that most Holden and Ford owners see our cars—from BEHIND. (Ed.)
Shannon’s Classic Eastern Creek – R & S Valiant 50 th Anniversary
A Spectator’s Experience by Laurel-Anne Kenny-Levick
It was a brilliant, sunny winter’s day as we drove into
Eastern Creek Raceway. The chrome on the R Series
Valiant was sparkling as we made our way to pit lane,
the last to arrive of the ten cars to take their place in
this prestigious spot for the 50 th Anniversary of the R
& S Valiants.
Admittedly my enjoyment of the now Alpine White R
Series Val (it started life as Gambier Blue and went
through several colour changes before white) that my
other half has had for …well let’s just say a long time,
was mostly fuelled by his love of the car, but as we
drove in to join the others, with cheers and the
pointing at watches (because we were last to arrive), I felt the sense of camaraderie and pride that this group
share. I also admit that I have been surprised by how much I know about the car when people stop to ask. I
guess it’s all sinking in bit by bit ( Don’t quiz me though, I don’t know THAT much..... mostly that the spare tyre
doesn’t actually sit in the boot lid !! ).
As we prepared for the big day I suggested to Colin that I wear a pink suit with matching pill box hat, Jacqui
Kennedy style—this was because he had mentioned that he was the PRESIDENT of the club at this time, the
50 th anniversary year. For some reason he thought the idea was a little off, and perhaps would not have the
best outcome for him - the President. Anyway, I digress.......
The day was spectacular weather wise, and the
five R’s and five S’s, all lined up, really did look
amazing. There was lots of lifting of hoods and
nodding and pointing going on, as there always is
when these guys get together. I always wonder
what they talk about as they do this every time
they meet…surely it’s the same as last time they
looked under the hood ? Then again, a tinker
here, a new hose there…I guess there is always
something to talk about or take photos of.
At last it was their turn to take a spin out on the Eastern Creek circuit. A chance to take their pride and joy on
the race track, 50 years of R & S Valiants, in all their glory. As they lined up in pit lane awaiting their moment, I
wandered along taking snap shots. The excitement, anxiousness and anticipation were evident as I walked
past each one. I felt a surge of pride for these men and their magnificent machines.
When it was their turn on the track I sat precariously
on the concrete barrier to get some photos of this
historic moment – the five R’s and five S’s proudly
driving on the track, on this their 50 th Anniversary.
The drivers may not have known there was a fan club
of one screaming and cheering like a crazy person,
taking photos and waving her arms wildly, but one or
two must have noticed, for they did toot their horns…
or perhaps they were doing that anyway, but it didn’t
matter for I was fully in the moment, cheering my
guys across the finish line!!
R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 10 of 24 Issue 155

To be honest I have never really understood the passion and love for these quirky automobiles, however as
they drove back into pit lane—fresh from their “win” at Eastern Creek - I felt like I was welcoming a soldier
home from war. The pride and sense of affection that welled up was almost tear worthy. I almost “got it” after
all these years! And perhaps got a glimpse of how these men feel about their precious Val’s.
A big thank you goes out to the gentlemen and their wives (and kids!) for their friendly and warm welcome
whenever I attend runs or club events. I love watching Col M try to give away the last of the cake so he doesn’t
get into trouble when he gets home, and
listen to John, George or Charlie talk about
the old days or the latest modification to
their car. Paul Mc is usually off looking at an
ambulance (Claire and I have been known to
walk around pretending we know stuff about
cars), Craig always stands out in his gorgeous
“pink mobile”, as I call it and everyone is
always happy to share advice – but most of
all, they like to mention that we are always
late or last to turn up to whatever event we
are attending.
Even though I don’t go to every outing or get
together, I truly feel part of the “family”, and
for this I say a big “thanks”. It was a great day,
and one that I hold affectionately in my
memory.
Happy 50 th Anniversary, Big Val!!
ALL CHRYSLER DAY 2012
Sunday October 28th.
So…….was the reinstatement of the Trophy categories enough
to bring the masses back to the A.C.D – I’m not so sure. I fear
the damage may have been done when it was decided a
couple of years back to take away the trophies and make it
purely a display day. That ended this year when there was a
return to vehicle judging and a swag of trophies on offer. I’m
told there was around 185 vehicles on show.
To celebrate 50 years of Valiant in Australia, entrants fees
were dropped to just $10, and in the middle of the show was a
fantastic looking line of R&S Valiants – 28 in all. Vehicles were
separated into model categories for viewing – like “Dodge”
“Plymouth”, “Charger” etc. but unfortunately the venue –
which I’ve seen overflowing some years – had large gaps in
places. This isn’t to say that there weren’t some really nice
cars on show, and the turnout by R&S owners alone made it a
worthwhile place to visit if you had even a hint of appreciation
for classic cars.
There were some standouts – it was the first time I’ve seen
Chantals car in the flesh, and it is a really nicely done car – I
loved it. The colour scheme and interior trim were something
else. Bruce Bulls V8 “S” Series stood way out in an ocean of relatively standard cars and gave people a chance
to see what other things you could do to an “S”. Little things like the grille on Paul Devines car, or Georges red R
Series that broke the trend of greens and whites……..the R&S cars today looked fantastic.
For me, the highlight was turning up with my daughter Eloise at the wheel of our “S”, and whilst 62 Vals may
not be her favourite cars, the look of excitement on her face when she saw a 1970 Plymouth Superbird brought
a smile to my face – I can see her cruising the streets of Campbelltown in one right now.
So, as much as I may sound disappointed at the numbers overall, it was an excellent turnout from “the pride of
1962”. Well done. In any case, rather than waffle on even more, here’s some pictures from the day – they’re
online if you have the net on. I’m sure I’ll have linked them to the website by the time you get this (fingers
crossed). Peter.
For Sale—1961 “R” Series Valiant, 2 door.
This car is a SUPER RARE V-100 1961 LHD US PLYMOUTH VALIANT 2 door coupe (same model as our very own
4 door R Series sedan).
It is a true classic with 38,000 original miles . It was a Californian “farm car” that was only driven to town, ser-
viced religiously & always garaged. It has an indestructible slant 6, 170 cu. in. motor with 3 speed manual trans-
mission. This car starts and runs perfectly on premium unleaded gas, gets between 5 & 6 miles per litre & is fun
to drive.
One owner, with unrestored, original blue paint & full service history.
There is NO RUST. Chrome bumpers, bumperettes & chrome trims are all in excellent condition.
New tyres on the original 13 inch rims. (I have a set of 14x7 hotwire mags that the new owner can have to dress
up the old Val!). The two-tone gray / black interior, rubber floor & headlining are all original and in very good
condition for the cars age (though they do sport some imperfections – see below).
Original extras include :
chrome trims around the front indicators,
push button heater
push button radio
horn ring, day/night mirror
front lap sash seat belts
2 retractable side seat belts have been fitted to the
back & a central lap sash belt.
There are a few blemishes : the front & rear seats have a few minor scuffs & the floor rubber is ripped in places
the cardboard rear parcel shelf is torn
the headliner is discoloured & shows signs of humidity stains above the back seat
there are some minor scratches in the paintwork & a few dings under the rear bumper bars
the front grille has been hit by a rock & is damaged (a replacement grill is supplied)
engine bay looks to have been splattered by battery acid, however these look cosmetic & easily repaired.
Anyone looking for an UNRESTORED, UNMOLESTED & ORIGINAL 2 door Valiant R Series coupe should ring to
arrange for a test drive (call Mark daily on 03 5664 7454) in the beautiful rolling hills & fresh air of South
Gippsland, Victoria. This car turns heads wherever it goes & gets lots of positive comments. All questions
welcome! The car is a survivor & is priced accordingly - will not disappoint.
PRICE : $25,000
