2011 Annual Bird Report

Introduction 

It was decided by the committee of Illawarra Birders Inc. that an annual report 

was required to summarise the large number of observations recorded by local 

and state birding organizations. The report would then be made available to the 

Local, State and Federal Government Departments as well as to the members 

of those birding groups. 

It is our intention to publish a report each year, and that over time trends may 

be observed in the populations of the bird species that have been recorded, 

within the study area. 

This information may be of value for the conservation of some species and in 

the planning for the future and development for our area. In the past a number 

of annual reports were published, which now can be found on the website Wild 

Illawarra and those reports may be useful as a comparison to this report. 

It is important that birdwatchers report their observations to their local club or on 

line, but it is not just the uncommon or rare species which should be reported. 

Species that may be in unusual numbers or locations are also of interest. The 

identification of beach washed and road killed birds is also important; if the 

species cannot be identified then the specimen should sent to the Australian 

Museum. Birding is a pleasurable, healthy and relaxing pasttime, but the 

observations and records that most birders keep are better shared than stored 

on a computer. 

Methodology 

This annual report is the culmination of observations and records that have 

been submitted online and in birding newsletters by various members of the 

public and birding organizations for the year 2011. These records have been 

collected and summarised by members of Illawarra Birders Inc. and although 

all care has been taken in the compiling of these records, they should be verified 

by the observer. The object of this report is to give the reader an overview 

of the birds which have been recorded within the study area during the year 

2011, and their status. 

The format that has been used follows the New South Wales Annual Bird Report 

which is a journal of Birding NSW and maintains the conventions established 

in their 1985 report. The checklist used for this report follows Christidis, 

L and W.E Boles 2008 Systematics and Taxonomy of Australian Birds. CSIRO 

Publishing, Melbourne (“C&B 2008”). The Southern Oceans Seabird Study 

Association (SOSSA) uses the taxonomy of the International Ornithologists’

Union; for the purposes of this report species appearing on that list and not on 

C&B 2008 appear in brackets, eg Shy Albatross (White-capped). 

The status follows the Handbook of Birds Found in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven 

and Adjacent Tablelands by C.J Chafer, C.C.P Brandis and D. Wright 1999, 

published by Illawarra Bird Observers Club. The systematic list follows the 

common and scientific names, Atlas No. and local status, than the observation 

by number of birds recorded at any one time, location and then the observer in 

brackets. 

Threatened species under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation 

Act (EPBC) and international conventions such as the Japan-Australia 

Migratory Bird Agreement (JAMBA) and the China-Australia Migratory Bird 

Agreement (CAMBA) are listed. Threatened species under the NSW Threatened 

Species Conservation Act are also listed. The list is a summary of observations 

and this report is designed to indicate increases, arrivals and 

movements of species that may occur within the study area throughout the 

year. 

Maximum numbers are listed by month for some species and early and late 

arrivals for migrants are also listed. Observers and locations which have been 

used in this report are also listed plus a year list for Barren Grounds Nature 

Reserve (Important Bird Area). The monthly wader report by Illawarra Birders 

Inc. is also included.

Monthly Review Of The Year

January 

The year started with many sightings of good numbers of shorebirds that 

included 130 Pacific Golden Plovers at Shoalhaven Heads and 115 Bar-tailed 

Godwits at Why Juck Bay. Other sightings included 50 White-throated 

Needletail at Bulli, 10 Plumed Whistling Ducks at Tallawarra, 8 Dollarbird at 

Tallawarra and 4 White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike also at Tallawarra. 

February 

This month produced a Streaked Shearwater and 4 Long-tailed Jaeger on the 

end of the month pelagic, 23 Pied Oystercatcher at Orient Point, 203 Pacific 

Golden Plover at Shoalhaven Heads, 200+ Bar-tailed Godwits and 50+ Eastern 

Curlew at Shoalhaven Heads and 2 Tawny Grassbird at Killalea. 

March 

There was an Emerald Dove seen at Mt. Keira, 15 White-throated Needletail at 

Woonona, an Eastern Osprey at Culburra, 2 Lesser Sand Plover on Corrimal 

Beach and an Australian Logrunner and 4 Rose Robin at Bellawongarah.

April 

The pelagic reported a Great Shearwater, a Black Bittern, 5 Azure Kingfisher 

and a Rose Robin were at Wonndian Creek Huskisson, 3 Reef Egret at Bass 

Point, 94 Double-banded Plover at Shoalhaven Heads, 2 Spotted Quail-thrush 

and a pair of Scarlet Robin on the Box Vale Track at Mittagong. 

May 

A Grey-backed Storm-Petrel was sighted on the pelagic, up to 45 Bar-tailed 

Godwit, 11 Eastern Curlew and 1 Whimbrel were at Lake Illawarra estuary and 

a Ground Parrot was sighted at Barren Grounds. 

June 

Black-browed Albatross and Australasian Gannet were observed from Hill 60, 

Kiama and Bass Point, 100 Straw-necked Ibis were at Jamberoo, 60 Bar-tailed 

Godwit and 10 Eastern Curlew remained at Lake Illawarra estuary, 10 Musk 

Lorikeet were at Wilton, Scarlet Robin were sighted at Wilton and on the Box 

Vale Track, Mittagong and a Rose Robin was at Bass Point. 

July 

An Eastern Osprey was sighted at Coolangatta, 40 Double-Banded Plover, 25 

Bar-tailed Godwit and 2 Eastern Curlew were in Lake Illawarra estuary and 

Brown Skua and White-fronted Tern were seen on the pelagic. 

August 

2 Stubble Quail were at Bulli, 36 Double-Banded Plover, 26 Bar-tailed Godwit 

and 8 Eastern Curlew were in Lake Illawarra estuary, 3 Ground Parrot were 

seen at Barren Grounds, an Eastern Osprey was at Shoalhaven Heads, Australian 

Logrunner and Rose Robin at Bellawongarah. 

September 

50 Hardhead and 200+ Coot were at Tallawarra Ash Ponds, an Eastern Osprey 

at Bomaderry, 1 Hooded Plover at Woonona and 2 Banded Lapwing at Windang, 

a Grey Tailed Tattler was at Windang rock shelf, an Eastern Barn Owl at 

Warilla and by mid month several Channel-billed Cuckoo had arrived. 

October 

Pink-eared Duck were seen at Purry Burry Point, Lake Illawarra and Tallawarra 

Ash Ponds, single Eastern Osprey were at Koona Bay, Lake Illawarra and 

Tallawrra Ash Ponds, Baillon’s and Spotted Crake were at Tallawarra Ash 

Ponds as were 500+ Eurasian Coot. Pacific Golden Plover were again at 

Shoalhaven Heads with 6 reported on the 8 th Australian Painted Snipe were 

seen at Koona and Haywards Bay, Lake Illawarra. Single Little Curlew was at 

Bass Point and shorebird numbers were swelled by returning migrants with 

Lesser and Greater Sand Plover, Marsh Sandpiper, Latham’s Snipe and Sharptailed 

Sandpiper at Lake Illawarra.

November 

A Spotted Harrier and Little Eagle were at Haywards Bay, Lake Illawarra 12 

White-throated Needletail at Bellawongarah, 200 Bar-tailed Godwit and 8 Eastern 

Curlew were at Shoalhaven Heads and an Artic Jaeger was on the sea wall 

at Lake Illawarra Entrance. 

December 

Up to 21 Australasian Darters were seen at Shoalhaven Heads on several dates 

in the month; the Sale Yard Dam in Moss Vale produced White-necked Heron, 

Yellow-billed Spoonbill and Red-kneed Dotterel; 130 Pacific Golden Plover were 

at Shoalhaven Heads with 2 pairs of Australian Pied Oystercatcher with young. 

Shoalhaven Heads recorded 200 Bar-tailed Godwit, 50 Eastern Curlew, 1 Terek 

Sandpiper, 6 Red Knot and 4 Common Greenshank.

Summary Of Observations For 2011 

Four hundred and ten species have been recorded within the study region with 

two hundred and ninety seven species recorded for 2011. Ninety five members 

and organizations have reported their observations online and in their journals 

resulting in one thousand eight hundred and sixty three records which were 

observed from one hundred and six locations within the region. Three species 

which are not considered as self populating are also recorded for 2011. Five 

species listed as Endangered and six species as Vulnerable under the EPBC 

act were recorded as well as one species listed as Critically Endangered, ten 

species listed as Endangered and seventeen species as Vulnerable under 

N.S.W. Threatened Species act.

Weather Review 2011

Weather observations are from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology 

website and were drawn from Bellambi AWS Station, 068228 which is 

located 6 km North of Wollongong. This station is located near the coast which 

will account for the high number of days, with a wind speed greater than 20 

km/h. After one of the longest droughts in recorded European history 2011 

followed the same weather pattern as 2010, with heavy rain and Cyclones in the 

North of Australia resulting in the flooding of large areas of Queensland and 

Northern NSW. The Illawarra region also had above average rainfall resulting in 

lower summer temperatures. 

January 

Average mean temperature: Lowest 19.7 C – Highest 24.8 C. Coldest day was 

Monday 3rd with a high of 19.6 C. The warmest day was Monday 24th with a 

high of 30.5 C. Seven days of rain for the month was recorded between, Monday 

3rd to Tuesday 11th with the highest on Sunday 9th with 21.8 mm with the 

month of January recording 54.6 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 24 

km/h or greater with Monday the 24th with the highest wind speed of 63 km/h. 

February 

Average mean temperature: Lowest 20.0 C – Highest 26.4 C. 

Coldest day was Tuesday 22nd with a high of 20.7 C. The warmest day 

Saturday the 5th with a high of 39.5. No rain was recorded for February. All days 

recorded a wind speed of 30 km/h or greater with Sunday the 6th with the 

highest wind speed from the South of 74 km/h. 

March 


Saturday 5th with a high of 19.2 C. The warmest day was Tuesday 1st with a 

high of 33.0 C. Eleven days of rain for the month was recorded between, 

Tuesday the 18th to Tuesday the 29th with the highest on Sunday the 20th with 

111.8 mm with the month of March recording 235.8 mm. All days recorded a 

wind speed of 22 km/h or greater with Saturday the 26th with the highest wind 

speed from the South of 63 km/h. 

April 

Average mean temperature: Lowest 15.2 C – Highest 21.7 C. 

Coldest day was Friday 29th with a high of 19.1 C, Warmest day was Saturday 

9th with a high of 26.4 C. No rain was recorded for April. All days recorded a 

wind speed of 20 km/h or greater with Saturday the 16th with the highest wind 

speed from the South/ South East of 72 km/h.

Wednesday 25th with a high of 14.5 C, Warmest day Saturday 21st with a high 

of 24.1 C. Seven days of rain for the month was recorded between Sunday 1st 

to Tuesday 31st with the highest on Tuesday the 31st with 48.0 mm with the 

month of May recording 93.2 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 17 km/h 

or greater with Wednesday the 11th with the highest wind speed from the West 

of 91 km/h. 

June 


Wednesday 8th with a high of 12.8 C Warmest day was Friday 3rd with a high 

of 21.2 C. Eleven days of rain for the month was recorded between, Wednesday 

the 1st to Thursday the 30th with the highest on Wednesday the 1st with 53.4 

mm with the month of June recording 116.8 mm. 

All days recorded a wind speed of 26 km/h with Tuesday the 21st with the 

highest wind speed from the West of 100 km/h. 

July 

Average mean temperature: Lowest 10.0 C – Highest 16.6 C . Coldest day was 

Wednesday 13th with a high of 12.8 C Warmest day was Monday 4th with a high 

of 20.3 C. Eleven days of rain was recorded between, Friday 1st to Thursday 

28th with the highest on Friday the 22nd with 82.6 mm with the month of July 

recording 223.0 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 26 km/h or greater with 

Thursday the 7th with the highest wind speed from the West of 100 km/h. 

August 


Sunday 14th with a high of 15.3 C Warmest day was Wednesday 3rd with a high 

of 24.5 C. Fourteen days of rain was recorded between Sunday 7th to Tuesday 

23rd with the highest on Friday 12th with 19.4 mm with the month August 

recording 65.8 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 19 km/h or greater with 

Friday the 19th with the highest wind speed from the South East of 76 km/h. 

September 


Friday 9th with a high of 13.0 C Warmest day Friday 23rd with a high of 30.8 C. 

Nine days of rain was recorded between, Wednesday 7th to Thursday 29th with 

the highest on Sunday 25th with 64.8 mm with the month of September recording 

90.2 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 28 km/h or greater with Friday 

the 30th with the highest wind speed from the West North West of 87 km/h.

Monday 3rd with a high of 15.5 C Warmest day was Monday 24th with a high of 

30.8 C. Fourteen days of rain was recorded between, Sunday 2nd to Saturday 

29th with the highest on Saturday 15th with 100.4 mm with the month of October

the highest wind speed from the south of 80 km/h. 

November 


Wednesday 23rd with a high of 18.1 C Warmest day was Monday 14th with a 

high of 35.5 C. Seventeen days of rain was recorded between, Tuesday 1st to 

Sunday 27th with the highest on Saturday 26th with 51.0 mm with the month of 

November recording 147.8 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 20 km/h or 

greater with the highest wind speed from the west north west of 83 km/h. 

December 


Sunday 4th with a high of 16.8 C Warmest day was Saturday 24th with a high 

of 24.8 C. Fifteen days of rain was recorded between, Thursday 1st to Tuesday 

27th with the highest on Monday the 12th with 37.6 mm with the month of 

December recording 97.4 mm. All days recorded a wind speed of 24 km/h or 

greater with the highest wind speed from the north east of 80 km/h. 

Area of Study - The Illawarra, 

Shoalhaven and Tablelands region 

The Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Tablelands form a region that was described in 

the Handbook of the Birds of the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and adjacent Tablelands 

which was published in 1999; this is the area described as the study area in this 

annual report. The region extends from Stanwell Park in the North to Lake 

Conjola in the south and inland to Corang Peak along the Shoalhaven and 

Wollondilly Rivers up to Wallacia in the North West.

The above records are extracted from the list of sightings recorded on the 

Illawarra Birders Lake Illawarra monthly wader count. Sites surveyed are the 

lake entrance, Windang, Why Juck Bay and Lake Illawarra West. These counts 

are conducted on the first Sunday morning of each month and the observations 

are forwarded to the Shorebirds 2020 website. There were no records for 

November and December due to heavy rain on the Sunday. 

Birds not observed on the wader counts during 2011: Latham’s Snipe; Ruddy 

Turnstone; Great Knot; Sharp-tailed Sandpiper; Curlew Sandpiper; Pacific 

Golden Plover; Grey Plover; Greater Sand Plover; Black-fronted Dotterel.
