shogun ®
TREATMENT
Shogun ® is a highly effective selective herbicide for the control of grass weeds in pastures. Shogun ® is particularly
effective for controlling Barley grass, Brome grass and Volunteer cereals, and if used correctly can improve both
the production and quality of pastures. Improving both the production and quality of pastures is a key step for
increasing the carrying capacity and profitability of pastures.
PAsTuRE PRoducTiviTy ANd quAliTy
Barley grass is a major problem in pastures and can cause eye injuries to sheep, reduced live weight gains and
reduced wool quality. Control of barley grass can have a significant effect on the growth and quality of the pasture
stand and the condition of stock. An application of Shogun ® can help to maximise growth rates and profitability.
Herbicide
Shogun ® is effective on a range of grass weeds and has good safety to many pasture legumes. Annual Ryegrass
(ARG) can be a desirable component of pastures and when used at 200mL/ha, Shogun ® may only kill 50% of the
annual ryegrass plants. This effect can vary and later applications will not be as severe on annual ryegrass.
Perennial ryegrass is extremely tolerant to Shogun ® and perennial phalaris will show some symptoms of damage
although regrowth and recovery will occur. Cocksfoot shows more severe damage but in most cases plants will
recover.
Shogun ® should be applied from the 3 leaf to early tillering stage of actively growing weeds. Spraying earlier is
not recommended because of the difficulty achieving adequate spray coverage on small (1-2 leaf) weeds. Late
spraying is also not recommended as large tillering weeds are hard to control. The best window for spraying
actively growing weeds is typically 4 to 8 weeks after germination.
GRAZiNG
Application of Shogun ® after a paddock has been grazed should not occur before grasses have produced
expanded leaves, which usually takes 14 days. Heavy grazing after application can reduce the effectiveness of
Shogun ® , allow 7 days to elapse before allowing stock to graze treated area.
In dense pastures use water volumes of at least 75L/ha and early application is essential in areas where soil
moisture is often marginal late in the season.
While Shogun ® is physically compatible with wide variety of herbicides, certain broadleaf herbicides can
reduce the efficacy of Shogun ® (Figure 1) and care should be taken when selecting an appropriate tank mix
partner.
