Just A Word. . .
Our ever-expanding
region of opportunity
Our Valley might not technically qualify as a global village but the
term could easily apply to the recent experience of the members
of Leadership Susquehanna Valley (LSV) Class of 2012. What they
saw in one day showed off our best attributes as a region and gave
a peek at how we might be perceived by the larger world. The “villagers”
that they met fit comfortably together like pieces of a puzzle
depicting a Norman Rockwell painting.
The occasion was “Tourism & Recreation” Program Day for the LSV
Class. It was conducted as a bus tour ranging north to the Williamsport
Community Arts Center after beginning at the Two Sisters’
Amish Meals at 7 Yoder Lane near Turbotville. Considered in the
context of Economic Development, this regional view is apt.
No longer just a series of river towns, our region is maturing economically
with links of trails from one Market Street to another,
industrial parks that house Marcellus Shale-related companies,
programs combining downtowns with projects like the teen entrepreneurial
program called T-BIZ, and the regional marketing by
FOCUS Central PA on behalf of five current partners.
You can read more about the Program Day in the LSV article elsewhere
in this paper but the Day itself represented the varied aspects
of our village sometimes overlooked, by even those of us who live
here. And as our region expands, particularly in the breadth of
its rich contributions to our lives, taking a new look at it regularly
might help us all to appreciate it…and show it off more!
A new national tourism campaign – billed as the first ever global
tourism campaign for the United States -- to attract world travelers
to this country, is entitled “Land of Dreams,” after the song by
Rosanne Cash, and could easily be about our Valley.
And what is needed to support those dreams? Economic opportunity!
We have trained engineers from Bucknell and business managers
from Bloomsburg; machinists from SUN Area Technical Institute;
growing railroad system and airports to move cargo supplementing
the regional networks of established roadways from Canada to
Mexico and west.
Now is the time to nurture the ideas of today and tomorrow and
inject them with the energy that cause manufacturing and natural
resources to combust! And why now? The liberal arts trained thinkers
at Susquehanna University and educators at the CSIU might tell
you that conditions are right.
Boston Consulting Group produced a new survey of 106 big manufacturers
and reported that 37% plan to bring production back
to the U. S. from China. So much for outsourcing. Contributing
factors like lack of stability and rising labor costs are costing China.
Even European manufacturers see opportunity in the weak dollar
but, more importantly, higher productivity from U. S. workers.
It has worked for Greenville, S.C., and it can work for the Valley.
Listen to the echoes of assets: the region’s technical schools, nonunion
workforce, infrastructure to move goods, tax incentives and
breaks, and an effective supply chain.
2012 Young Americans Seminar Sponsors
Valley’s top students prepare for life “after high school”
The top students of the Susquehanna River Valley got together
on April 11 for a full-day seminar on preparing for life after high
school. The Chamber recognizes these students based on more than
just academic merit. Schools nominate students who stand out as
possessing leadership potential, and who excel in extracurricular
activities. This is one of the Chamber’s ways of ensuring our best and
brightest choose to pursue careers in the Valley, rather than taking
their talents elsewhere. The students will be recognized this month
for their accomplishments at the annual Young Americans Banquet.
Worker’s Compensation and Your Company
By Michelle Morgan
Shamokin Dam Health Center
It’s Monday morning and two
hours into the workday one of
your recently hired employees
just reported that he injured
himself on the job. No one on
the plant floor saw the injury
happen and the employee states
he is suffering from severe back
pain. You follow company protocol,
have the employee fill out
the proper paperwork and send
him for medical treatment. You
have a suspicion the injury is not
work related and is from a pre-existing
condition. You know it will
result in a worker’s compensation
claim with the possibility of
the employee being off work for
an extended period.
Economic challenges and the
high cost of medical treatment
and insurance are having an
impact on our employees and in
return are costing employers in
disability claims, lost productivity
and increased absenteeism.
Workers compensation fraud is
a problem, the most common
of which is the phony workplace
injury (like a back strain) that’s
only proven fraudulent when the
employee is caught doing yard
work or holding down a different
job while collecting workers
comp benefits. Fraud can also
take the form of malingering,
where an employee complains
of unseen ailments or prolongs a
legitimate claim to avoid returning
to work.
Workers compensation benefits
are paid regardless of who is
to blame for the accident or
injury. This “no-fault” status is
key to workers compensation, the
employer does not admit liability
for the injury or illness, and the
employee receives benefits without
having to sue. The company
is required to return the injured
employee back to 100% of their
physical capacity or the capacity
at which they were tested at upon
hire. There are certain circumstances
where workers comp insurance
will not pay, such as the
involvement of alcohol or illegal
drug use if it leads to an injury.
The same goes for self-inflicted
injuries, and for injuries incurred
while a worker is off the job,
committing a crime, or violating
company policy.
The bottom line on workers
compensation fraud is that it
costs everyone, employer and
employee alike. Once insurance
companies discover fraud, they
investigate but uncovering fraud
in the first place is not easy. They
view certain situations as suspicious
with a greater likelihood of
fraud such as:
· Accidents that occur early
Monday morning, shortly after
the worker shows up, may be
viewed with suspicion, because
the injury might have come from
a weekend softball game or yard
work.
· An injured worker who shuns
treatment from a doctor or physical
therapist may find himself
under scrutiny, because his reluctance
to seek treatment could be
viewed as an attempt to cover up
a phony injury.
· An employee who is known to
be disgruntled, or who knows he
or she is about to be laid off, and
makes a workers comp claim may
be committing fraud because
he or she is unhappy with the
employer.
There is much at stake for
insurance companies to reign
in workers compensation costs.
As a result, many are moving to
implement requirements to the
companies they insure such as
job demand analysis, pre-placement
screenings and safety
training. Companies may receive
discounted rates for following
these protocols. Speak to your
insurance company about ways
you can cut workers comp costs
such as:
· Require pre-employment drug
and alcohol testing on all new
applicants and pre-placement
functional capacity evaluations
(detailed job specific assessments
based on a job profile to ensure a
worker you employ is capable of
the physical demands of the position)
on all new hires.
· Publicize your workers compensation
policy to all new and
current employees, and provide
them with updates at least once
each year. Work with your insurer
to implement a safety-management
program that can eliminate
as many safety problems as possible.
· Educate supervisors on workers
comp issues: How injuries
decrease productivity and how
costs affect the bottom line.
· If you suspect a fraudulent
claim and you have evidence
or witnesses to back up your
suspicion, contact your insurer’s
special investigations unit immediately.
· Finally, pay attention to employee
complaints and concerns
about their working conditions.
The strongest predictor of fraud
is a chronically disgruntled work
force.
If your employee is injured
on the job, take action right
away. Stay involved with your
employee’s claim control costs
and retain a good employee by
staying involved in the claim.
Help your employee return to
work. Returning to work speeds
an injured worker’s recovery and
reduces the financial impact of
a workers’ compensation claim
on the worker, the employer,
and the workers’ compensation
system.
Tourism is Pennsylvania’s
In the Chamber’s fourcounty
largely on recreational opportunities
on the Susquehanna River
But in addition to fishing,
canoeing and kayaking, River
of interesting museums and specialty
a number of incredibly unique
seasonal festivals that epitomize
Leadership Susquehanna Valley
“tourism & recreation” program day
Blurry-eyed members of the Leadership
Susquehanna Valley Class of 2012
gathered at the Susquehanna River Valley
Visitors Bureau to hear Executive Director,
Andrew Miller, launch the day with a
strategic view of what they would witness
during the next nine hours. As always,
Andrew’s personal enthusiasm and that
of his staff supervised by Barb Pick carried
the group through a spectacular
series from regional cuisine to regional
arts and heritage.
The stations of the day ranged from
old-fashioned farm cooking, served
family-style, at the Two Sisters’ Amish
Cooking to world-famous Purity Candy.
Sticky buns, ham, scrambled eggs, grated
and seasoned potatoes, coffee, juice,
more muffins and rolls, fruit, yogurt with
blueberries, made everyone feel right at
home around bowls and platters.
Following the eating there was the not-so
appetizing fascination in the form of
Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland led by the man
himself. Just back from Tanzania and
Chamber Member Matrimony
The Leadership Susquehanna Valley Class of 2012 tours along the main staircase in Williamsport’s Community Arts Center.
Rwanda, I asked him how his renowned
exhibits compared with those in the premiere
zoos worldwide. “Jack Hanna,” he
replied, “dropped by just last week and
told me that he thought my exhibit was
the best he’d ever seen!” Great praise
from one TV late-night show guest to
another.
Next was transportation and heritage in
downtown Williamsport. A tour on the
motorized trolley, originally powered by
electricity, grew with the region along
with the railroad. The Peter Herdic
Transportation Museum proudly displayed
the two meticulously renovated
– right down to the paint colors – Pullman
“Colonial Series” parlor cars. To
round out all forms of transportation,
the vintage restored trolley raced across
town to where the paddlewheel riverboat,
Hiawatha, is moored, ready to begin its
season of cruises. Gary W. Parks, executive
director of the Thomas T. Taber Museum
of the Lycoming County Historical
Society, which highlights Millionaire’s
Row of the City’s Victorian glory, curates
the museum’s collections, archives and
library. They include an art gallery, an
American Indian gallery, period rooms
of furniture and fashion, and a history
of the lumber industry that made the
fortunes of many in Lycoming County.
A major attraction for every entertainment
form possible, the renovated
Williamsport Community Arts Center,
originally pegged at a $6 million restoration
but climbing to $13.5 million,
transported the crowd back to the glory
of 1928, complete with original lights.
The Center is home to the Williamsport
Symphony Orchestra with a season that
runs from October to this month. It
signs off with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1
and Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with
featured pianist, Roberto Plano, who
I saw perform in a wholly inadequate
college theater five years ago. He was
magnificent despite the instrument and
the venue.
While at the Center, Jason Fink, Andrew’s
Lycoming County counterpart, stopped
by to reinforce his community’s commitment
to the arts. In his major position as
executive vice president of the chamber,
he spends a lot of time dealing with Marcellus
Shale companies, too.
On the way out of town before reaching
the sweetness of Purity Candy where
the crew was treated to free samples and
was personally showed the candy-making
process from windows just feet away,
sports’ fans got a private tour of the Little
League Museum. International in scope
and appeal, this marvel of an organization
has grown exponentially since
beginning its “Challenger Little League”
program for kids with disabilities.
A quiz about the people we met and the
sights we saw topped off a full day. Chief
among the impressions taken away was
the embrace felt from those who magnify
our region with care and pride and make
us care and be thankful that it is ours.
More than several class members counted
this day as “the best” so far!

SUN Home Health &
Hospice Announces
STAY AT HOME
Program
SUN Home Health & Hospice
is an expert at helping patients
stay at home. In fact the
organization ranks in the top
10 percent nationwide of all
homecare providers in preventing
re-hospitalizations. In order
to help you stay at home in your
familiar environment with your
loved ones, we have created the
STAY AT HOME program.
If you had a hospital stay for
a chronic or acute condition
such as congestive heart failure,
a heart attack, pneumonia or
diabetes and are over 65, studies
show that you have a one in five
chance of being hospitalized
again within 30 days. You are
not alone in your quest to stay
out of the hospital and studies
show that proper home support
and education can greatly reduce
the need for you to return
to the hospital.
By joining this free program
you will receive the following
benefits: periodic newsletters
containing health education
and beneficial tips to help you
live safely in your home; assistance
in identifying additional
community resources that you
may qualify for that will help
you STAY AT HOME; and access
to nurses in SUN Home’s Information
and Referral Center
(IRC) 24 hours a day to answer
your healthcare questions.
Joining is easy: simply call us
AdOne Advertising
and Design releases
2012 Huntingdon
County Visitors Guide
SUNBURY – AdOne Advertising
and Design recently announced
16 MAY 7, 2012
Members – Submit your newsworthy information to Robert Luff,
director of communications & resources, at rluff@gsvcc.org.
the release of the 2012 Huntingdon
County Visitors Guide to
promote events and businesses
in the Raystown Lake region.
This guide marks the first collaboration
between AdOne and
the Huntingdon County Visitors
Bureau.
“We are honored to have
partnered with the Huntingdon
County Visitors Bureau and its
members in developing this
important publication,” Greg
Underkoffler, president of
AdOne Advertising and Design,
remarked. “At AdOne we recognize
the importance of promoting
Pennsylvania businesses
and we always enjoy the design
opportunities afforded by the
tourism industry.”
According to Underkoffler,
AdOne worked on all aspects of
the 2012 guide – from ad sales
to design concepts and from
guide layout to print coordination.
“At AdOne, we offer
complete advertising solutions
to our customers,” he said.
The theme of the 2012 guide
is Raystown Moments, encouraging
readers to discover and
savor their favorite Raytown
moments. “Over the past few
years, we have made a conscious
migration from a directory publication
to more of a magazine
feel, while still giving the reader
the convenience of property
listings,” stated Matt Price, executive
director of the bureau.
Price added, “The title Raystown
Moments was the brainchild of
AdOne, inspired by our tagline
A Moment Away.”
The 2012 design includes
a multitude of large, colorful
images that represent the
beauty of the Raystown Lake
region. The layout of the 2012
guide introduces more charts
and cross referencing tools to
better promote members and
give readers an easier way to
navigate through the guide. “We
always try to keep our promotions
compatible with emerging
technology,” said Price. “This
year’s guide expands the use
of QR codes, allowing readers
with smart phones to navigate
instantly to member websites for
more information.” The 2012
guide also features an interactive,
online counterpart. The
2012 virtual guide can be viewed
at the Bureau’s web site, www.
raystown.org.
Owens Farm Hosts
Lambing-time
Slumber Parties
The lambing barn at Owens
Farm was like Grand Central
Station during the month of
March. A record-setting 135
lambs were born, welcomed
by a series of Lambing-Time
Slumber Parties. This event
involves small groups of house
guests actively participating in
farm chores during the most
critical time of the year on a
sheep farm. Each slumber party
is a unique adventure, but there
were two stand-outs this year.
One group saw not one—not
two—but twelve newborns during
their 48-hour visit. The
next week’s group ended up
convoying a distressed sheep
to a country vet, and receiving
an impromptu lesson in sheep
obstetrics. Without exception,
all the guests got a realistic taste
of sheep farming.
“What do you do with all those
lambs?” is the most common
question asked of the Owens
family this time of year. About
one third are sold as grass-fed
lambs to local families, another
one third to people raising
sheep, and a third kept to further
enlarge the flock. Owens
Farm raises two breeds of sheep:
Coopworths for meat and wool,
and Katahdin hair sheep for
meat.
Campus Theatre
renovation project
honored by AIA
LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Campus
Theatre Renovation Project
has been honored with a Citation
of Merit for Architectural
Excellence by the American
Institute of Architects’
Pennsylvania Chapter.
The award was presented April 3
to lead architect Ted Strosser, of
Ted L. Strosser, Architecture &
Conservation.
The citation reads, “This apparently
straight forward, modestly
budgeted ‘rehabilitation’ of an
old cinema is really a meticulous
and gorgeous work of interior
conservation, together with
a generous commitment to
downtown revitalization. The
result captures what many of us
imagine to be the magic that
accompanied going downtown
to the movie palace.”
Bucknell University purchased
the 1941 Campus Theatre
in2010 to assure its survival and
increase the vibrancy of downtown
Lewisburg.
“The design team pushed for
a higher level of historical
conservation than the original
requirements,” said Strosser.
John Hartmann, a 1979 Bucknell
graduate and art conservator
and president of Carlisle,
Pa.,-based Hartmann Fine Art
Conservation Services, returned
to Lewisburg to painstakingly
conserve the long-obscured
murals and art deco fixtures,
uncovering layer upon layer of
oil and tobacco residue to reveal
their vibrant images.
According to Strosser, the
Campus Theatre project also
includes new infrastructure: a
fire suppression system as well
as new sound, projection, IT,
HVAC and electrical systems.
“Great care was taken to refurbish
original lighting fixtures
and all original cinema equipment
no longer in use was retained
in place to preserve these
early technologies,” he said.
The $2.5 million renovation
project was funded by a Commonwealth
grant and funding
from Bucknell University. The
University owns the building,
but a nonprofit group continues
to set programming and run
day-to-day operations. The Campus
Theatre, which celebrated
its reopening last August, is one
of a handful of art deco theaters
built in the early 1940sthat
remains in operation.
The project is one of four
undertaken to directly invest
in the community: the Barnes
& Noble at Bucknell University
bookstore; the Federal Post
Office building, which houses
the Office of Development
and Alumni Relations; and the
DeWitt Building, which houses
the Downtown Art Gallery, an
Entrepreneurs Incubator, and
the Small Business Development
Center.
